Artwork off artboard disappears

My artwork disappears if it's not on an artboard; how can I change this so graphics off to the side are still visible even if they're not on an artboard?

Maybe you have bought the Artboard Only version.
Or maybe it is time for the list.
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file, and when it is not caused by issues with opening a file from external media. You may have tried/done some of them already; 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
If possible/applicable, you should save current artwork first, of course.
1) Close down Illy and open again;
2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to at least 5 times);
3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible), for CS3 - CC you may find the folder here:

5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);

6) Uninstall (ticking the box to delete the preferences), run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

Masking off-artboard artwork during export/save

I've created an image that has some bleeds and needs to be saved as a JPEG for web display. If I just export it (or save for web and devices), the off-artboard stuff shows up in the saved image (which, of course, is bigger than the artboard). I've created a mask layer that masks the visibility of the excess artwork within AI and the saved file, but the off-artboard area occupied by the masked artwork is still there in the saved image. How can I non-destructively hide this stuff during saves, saving just the artboard? Thanks.

Check the Clip to Artboard in the Image Size tab of the Save for Web dialog.

How do I get album artwork off my phone onto my PC?

I wiped my old PC and while I saved all my old MP3 files, I didn't think to save any of the old artwork.
Of course, the files that Apple knows has the artwork but there are plenty that Apple doesn't recognize which I'd spent days gathering.
I haven't sync'd my phone since the PC upgrade so all the album artwork is still on there.
Any way to get that artwork off or am I stuck with having to go find it again?
If I do get it off my phone, am I right that it will be the lower rez version and I'd still have to go find the higher res images if I want it displayed propoerly on my PC?

You can do this with 3rd party software such as Touch Copy (pc or mac) or PhoneView (mac).

T400: Optical Drive Power Off, Then Disappears

I'm running Win 7 x64 on a T400, and recently installed Power Manager 3.12. Since 3.11, I've enabled the "Automatic Optical Drive Power Off" feature. In Vista, this worked fine, where once the drive was powered off (and the light on it would go off), I'd eject it and it'd automatically power back on. Or, in My Computer, I could right-clik on it and power it back on.
Now, in Win 7, once it powers off, it disappears from My Computer completely. On top of that, the light on the drive stays on, and after a while a different thing shows up in My Computer under "Other" and all it says is "(Powered Off)", but it's not the optical drive. Clicking "Power On" on this phantom device does nothing, and ejecting and closing the optical drive does not get it to show up again either.
The only way I've found to re-enable the optical drive is to remove it physically from the laptop and re-insert it. Then, it'll reappear in My Computer, but the mysterious Powered Off device still remains as well.
Is anyone else having a similar issue? I'm leaning toward the assumption it's one of the many bugs in the Win 7 Power Manager (that along with the Dock Eject Action not functioning properly). I'm at the point where I'm ready to just completely uninstall the Power Manager, as it only seems to cause more problems than it solves.

Sorry to bump this thread, but it seems that this issue is still not resolved. I have just completed an install of windows 7 on my T400, which orginally had windows vista preloaded. Everything is fine, execept for this optical drive issue. Upon auto-power off of the optical drive, the ultrabay slot light does not turn off even though my computer reports the optical drive as powered off. The drive then becomes inoperable until restart, even if you plug in the computer. By inoperable, I mean that windows no longer recognizees it.
Disabling the feature in power manager is not solving the issue however, because that also removes the power saving advantage that this feature has. I have installed both power manager (3.40) and the power managment driver. They were first installed using system update, and I have since removed and reinstalled them manually with no change. I have googled for a solution, but I have only found this thread to describe the problem most accurately. I don't know what I can do to solve this problem.

Artboards disappear after closing and reopening a file

My coworkers and I have been running into an issue when we use documents that have multiple artboards. After we do ouer work, we save and close the file. When we go to reopen the file, all but the first artboard have disappeared. Looking in the Artboard panel, the original artboard counts up after every save.
For example, say I were to create a new file and add a couple artboards. After saving, closing, and reopening the file, the additional artboards would be gone, the artwork on those boards would still be there, and the original artboard would be labeled as "Artboard 2". If I were to add the missing artboards again, the same issue would occur and reopening the file would have the first artboards labeled now as "Artboard 3".
I am using Illustrator CS6 and saving the files as an .ai with the default settings.

Are you saving locally? Over a network? Mac or PC?

Artboards disappearing in Illustrator CS4

I'm using Illustrator CS4 on Mac OSX 10.6 and have created a 12 page document for folks at work.
Every time I re-open the document to make amends all but the first artboard have disappeared.
All the artwork content is still there, layers are fine etc but where the outline of the artboard page was there are now only guides Which are added to a layed named 'Guides For Artboard'.
When I create a PDF of this file it only does the one, first page. It's like it doesn't realise the rest of the pages exist.
But this doesn't happen to every document. It keeps happening to this one, it's happened to others but then when I open them again later they are fine.
Is this a bug??
This file was created new in CS4 and is only edited by myself on the same machine.
Any suggestions would save me some serious grief!!

No it's saved as a CS4 ai file.
But that did get me wondering, so I saved it as a AI CS3 file and upon reopening that it's done the same thing, added guides where my artboards were.
That makes sense as CS3 doesn't support multiple artboards.
But I am saving all my artworks as CS4 files and it's doing this to some of them which is what I don't understand.
Just wondered if there was a setting i'd missed or something

How do I trim edges of illustrator artwork to artboard?

I've been doing some tutorials, but some of the objects overlap the edge of the artboard.
When I save and export the finished article to png or jpg the picture shows the items off the edge of the artboard.
Is there a way to trim the finished picture to the artboard...

In the earlier versions it was Object>Crop Area>Make (nothing about a mask).
You should (be able to) click Use Artboards in the Export dialog in CS6.
If not, maybe it is time for the list.

Position of component buttons off artboard

Does Flash Catalyst support positioning of component buttons off the artboard? I have an image that I would like to scroll with a vertical scroller and then embed external url click links. The page that I'm working on is here in the portfolio section:

The image is scrolling but the buttons are locked in one position. Any help on making the buttons scroll with the image would be appreciated.

Can you give us some additional info on how you've structured your Catalyst project? The scrolling area is a Data List, I assume. If you double-click to edit the list and then double-click again to edit the Repeated Item, what do you see? If you place both an image and your row of buttons inside here, then each image and its corresponding buttons should scroll in lockstep together.
Or do you only want one set of buttons total, not one per image? If so, I'm confused about the behavior you're looking for -- if the buttons are not associated with any one specific image, which image would they sit on top of / next to?

My system preference, powner off, restart disappeared after installing lion twice! Anybody can help?

After installing Lion on my Imac, the System Preference option in the apple menu (Apple sign on top left side of desktop) has disappeared. In addition, the power off, restart options are gone too. I have reinstalled the Lion twice but the problem hasn't been resolved yet. This is happening when I am logged into adm. user. In other users account, the menu seems to be ok. Any suggestions or recommendation to help me fix this issue?

Let me clarify the issue again:
A number of items have gone missing from my apple menu: Software Update, System Preference, Dock, Recent, Restart, and Shut Down are gone.
All that's left are About, Location, Force Quit, Sleep, and Log Out. Can anybody help?

In AI CS6 where is the Hide Artwork Outside Artboard command?

Using AI CS6, I am trying to hide artwork that extends beyond the artboard, but I cannot find the command in any menu. Where is it?

Never mind. I downloaded Inkscape which is a free open-source vector editor, and it has the availability to show the artboard without the overhanging art. Beautiful software. I may just convert to using it all the time.

Illustrator saving issues: Previewing off Artboard

This is a somewhat complicated issue to explain so I've attached some images.
The basic gist of my issue is that when I "Save" an alteration of an already existing document, the document will preview things that exist off the artboard, and not even my full artboard. This is happening with increasing frequency and I can't figure out the root of this issue. The first picture I have attached to this post is how the file previews in Illustrator; the second is a screencap from the file open in Illustrator, where you can see the artboard in the center, and the art to the left that is being previewed (I have outlined the artboard in pink). The portion of the document that is being saved in the preview is not consistent either, so sometimes I will get no portion of the artboard visible in the preview. The interesting detail is that if I "Save As" my file, and over right the existing file it saves uncorrupted.
Has anyone else experienced this issue and have a possible solution?

whiteryanc, there has been a few othe post concerning this issue on the adobe forums with no real answer to why this is happening. The issue you have is an issue we have also. It all started once we updated illustrtor to CS6. We even went a step further and updated to illustrator CC to see if that would fix the issue. This did not fix it. There is a work around though. Instead of just saving the file after altering the file do a save as and replace the file. This seems to be working on my end.

Printer shifts artwork off centre

I have a PDF created from PS CS6 which is a Letterhead layout. The design has two lines (strokes) that run down the left side of the page. ( see image below )
Consequently I am wanting to print this to an 'HP Photosmart 7520' with borderless printing.
Unfortunately the result always appears to shift the artwork to the right subsequently the graphic strokes are shifted away from the left edge. ( see image below )
I have checked all the printer and acrobat settings and have tried printing; 'actual size' and 'fit' options but have no success. I have tried printing direct from PS but it is the same. I wonder if it could be a driver issue.
Any help on this would be much appreciated

its temporary fix/workaround, but have you thought of creating a custom paper size and tricking it into printing correctly?
or rotating the saved image upside down in reference then having a wide blue border that essentially gets cut off?

Scaling Falling off artboard

Hi all
lokking for a little input for a problem I have come across, I have found a get around but wondering why...
Size of clipped objects 288mm x 450mm approx
Unclipped 1497mm x 1848mm approx
when I try to right clip & scale 400% I get a message saying unable to continue as falls of the artboard ( clipped elements not seen )
But when I put *4 after the size in the transform window This allows the scaling enough if the clipped objects are now falling off the artboard..
Why if it allows it one way won't allow it the other ?..

Could your reference point (looks like a rubiks cube) be set to something different than center.
5779.55 mm is max artbaord size, I suspect this is somehow reacting with this and the unmasked size when using transform, possibly not when using scale.

No longer able to drag and drop artwork off amazon

I went through and edited all the albums' artwork that iTunes could not find by getting the image on amazon and just dragging and dropping the jpeg into the info box for the albums' songs. However, this does not work anymore. Any idea what happened? I can drag the image to the artwork square, but it will not apply.

here is a user tip that worked for me:
try this:
you can add artwork by going these routes:
1) individual tracks
right-click and +get info+ on the file, go to the artwork tab and click on add. navigate to the image file on your HD
2) multiple items
select them all in iTunes, +get info+, copy the image out of Safari or Preview, click once into the artwork box and paste the image into it.
