As a student, should I get the Air or the Pro?

The thing is that I have a Macbook Pro. I got it in 2009 and it is definetly starting to show its age. The battery lasts anywhere from 30-70 minutes when not plugged in. I have to end nearly every Safari session with force quit. The volume quality is terrible and my trackpad is starting to die on me. Genius Bar won't replace the battery because there is apparently a stain on it. Very silly.
I get tired of lugging my Macbook back and forth to school. So, I was thinking of getting an Air for 1) the weight 2)The battery life. But I hear that Mac Air isn't very powerful. For school, I would need to have Bootcamp installed on my computer because a lot of programs I use aren't mac compatible. (I'm a Management Information Systems major. It's half Computer Science & half Business) This year I used Visio and Oracle SQL Developer. I'm not sure what I will need for upcoming semesters. Will an Air be able to handle these programs? In addition to that, I do the regular stuff: Write a few papers, check emails and facebook, Youtube, web-surf, and watch television online.
I was thinking I would save my Pro for Sims and use the Air for everything else. I'm a student and a future Apple employee so I'm hoping that I'll get some good discounts. So my question IS, should I get another Pro (I could move everything over to the new comp and donate my old one, but it's soo heavy!) or get an Air (I'd keep my Pro for sims and use the Air for school. But Airs sound very weak!!) What should I do??
And this is my first post so please be nice
Thanks to all that reply

I have a mid 2012 MBA and find it very capable.  The 1.8 GHz Core i5 processor seems to handle everything quite well.  For your school work I think the MBA is your best bet.  It is capable and light.  The MB Pro tends to weight quite a bit more and really isn't that much better unless you get into the very high end units.  One caveat, the MBA does not yet have the Retina display.  If you feel you wil need that, then the MB Pro is the only laptop to go for now.  The MBA may get the Retina display in the future but until them (who knows when) there isn't much of a choice.  If you go with the MBA, make sure you get the best processor and memory you can afford.  I find the Core i5 processor is quite capable and 4 GB RAM is sufficient.  For your school work that should be fine.

  • For the 2012 Macbook Pro 13" should I get the 2.5GHz Dual-core Intel Core i5 or the 2.9GHz Dual Core Intel Core i7?

I am a high school student and I am getting my first Macbook Pro. I am not really sure which 13 inch Macbook Pro model I should get. My budget is kind of tight, but I think that I can afford any one of the models but I dont want to spend any money that I dont have to spend. Usually on a day to day basis, I use the web brower, watch movies that I have downloaded, and write a lot of papers. I also sometimes use Photoshop, and while I do not play a lot of games, I do want to have the option if I decide to later when I go to college. The larger hard drive size on the Core i7 model does not really matter to me because I dont plan using more than 500GB. I will be upgrading the ram to 8GB if I get the Core i5 model and it comes standard on the i7. Also, I need this computer to last me for 3-4 years so I want something that will still seem relatively fast a few years down the road. Lastly, while I would prefer getting the Macbook Pro due to its cheaper price and ability to upgrade the hard drive later, I also am considering the Macbook Air Core i7 model, mainly because of the faster ssd and the higher resolution screen. I dont really use the optical drive, so loosing it would not be a big deal. The same goes with the Firewire port or the Ethernet port. What would you guys suggest I get. A Macbook Pro or a Air and if the Pro, should I get the Core i5 or the i7?
    Thanks

If you're planning on keeping it for long term.
    Go with the i7 2.9GHz.
It's a $300 difference but with that you get; the RAM, Hard Drive and Processor upgrade.
Since you want it to last before you decide to either upgrade or buy a new one.  The i7 2.9GHz is a good choice.
Do remember that Mountain Lion is around the corner and other software get's updated to and wants more CPU power and more memory.
Nothing is wrong with the i5 2.5GHz either.  You'll just have to upgrade the RAM sooner in case 4GB isn't enough for you.
    Put it this way:
    i5 2.5GHz has 3MB L3 Cache Memory
    i7 2.9GHz has 4MB L3 Cache Memory
Now, you're also thinking about the MB Air, a very nice notebook which is light, portable and has a better resolution than the MB Pro 13 inch.  You have to however, keep in mnd that the RAM and Hard Drive in the MB Air is not user upgradeable and has no optical drive.

    Hi,
In Receiver File Adapter you can set under 'Adapter-Specific Message Properties'
    check Use Adapter-Specific Message Properties
check Fail on Missing Adapter Message Properties
    Check File Name
Have a look at this link,  [File_to_File|http://allsapnetweavernotes.blogspot.com/2008/09/how-can-i-access-filename-from-fileftp.html]

Running Moutain Lion on Early 2009, mirroring two Seagate Go Flex 2TB USB 3.0 Drives. Installed in Slot 4.
Using it primarily with VMWare Fusion for Virtual Drives. Windows, Unbuntu and other OS running really well.
HPT Support was responsive and very helpfull using the WEB Portal under the product page.
I have some comments and a suggestion:
Have you tried your setup with a SD/CF combo card reader (like the Lexar or Kingston FCR-H63)? Does the card appear on the desktop when first plugged in?
Did you need to fool around with any kind of power issues in installing this card in the x4 PCIe slot of the MacPro?
Suggestion. Have you tried one of the fixed in this article to cure the BT issues in MacPro 3,1?
    Good luck.

  • In platform transition: should I get the Mac or PC version?

I am currently working off of a PC, but will be buying a Mac next year May or so.  So ultimately I want a Mac-compatible version of Adobe Creative Suite, but need to work with something on my PC for the next few months.  Should I get the PC version now, and then just continue using that version on the Mac via Bootcamp, Fusion, Parallels, etc.?  Or is there a way where I could get the PC version now and switch to a Mac-compatible version in May?
And is it even preferrable to have the Mac-based version over the PC-version when I do buy a Mac?
I am planning on using the CS for front-end web development (wireframing in Illustrator / Photoshop) and some marketing collateral.
Any comments or suggestions would be great.
    Thank you!

The simplest way of accomplishing what you want to do is via a subscription to the Adobe Creative Cloud which covers usage on both platforms. For example, download and install on your Windows system now. If you go with a Macintosh later on, simply download and install on the Macintosh. You get two activations and unless you decide to decommission the Windows system, you don't even need to deactivate on the Windows system. Obviously, if you discontinue use of the Windows system, you should deactivate on that system. The subscription also will get you the latest version of the software as it is released without subsequent upgrade costs.

  • Should I Get the Iphone 3g

I have been looking at getting the Iphone 3g over the past couple of weeks. What I really want is an unbiased opinion. I know it may have some trouble with 3G. And I know it may have a few minor software gliches(which I am pretty sure Apple will fix).
Also which should I get the 16gb or the 8gb version.
    Thanks

A lot of "depends" type questions...
personally, I say yes. Ultimately depends on how you wish to use the phone?
3G: Call AT&T Customer Svc and have them verify the level of 3G network support in your local area, or your frequented business or otherwise travel locations are. Just because they show you being in "blue" 3G zone, doesn't mean your signal strength will be as strong as another "blue" area 4-miles away. My 3G signal vacillates from No Svc to two bars from minute to minute standing in the same spot. The more users on 3G network will slow your download speed.
BATTERY: No complaints here based on my regulated use of 3G, PUSH; Locate Me; Wi-Fi usage; send and receive emails/SMS messages, GPS and internet access. First 24-hours I owned the field I spent a lot of time familiarizing myself with all the features and I ended up with 19-hours battery time. Since then I avg 24- 48 hours before recharging.
My Personal usage: I use my 3G as a "tool", only using features as required. I work a lot from my home office; therefore, don't require PUSH for email/SMS since I have my laptop and local ISP for internet and email access. Being at home and when traveling in the local area I "know where I am for the most part" so GPS is not required. Having my business phone there, most of my calls are on it and not my iPhone unless I receive a call from a colleague or family member on my iPhone. I do leave my BlueTooth turned on at least 8-hours a day even in my home office. I turn PUSH on when I am expecting important emails from clients or colleagues when away from my home office which is at least 1-hr per day... when I am not expecting anything of importance and away from my office, I leave it on FETCH at 15-30 min intervals since there is nothing that important that can't wait and if it is, they can call me to get my attention. I use my camera on occasion (twice in two weeks I think... and have rare needs for video capabilities). Sending pix via SMS or txt can be convenient at times, but depends on the priority and urgency you put into sending this to someone who may not even have their wireless device turned on or close by? I also have not experienced the same concerns as others on this Discussion site.. but their user scenarios may significantly differ from mine. I don't use Micro Soft Exchange server, nor Mobile Me... since my syncs etc can wait until I get to my MacBook Pro and flip on iTunes. I purchased the 16Gig and glad I did. I do have around 200-tunes on it and maybe keep 2-3 movies on it. I listen to my iTunes a couple hours a day on average and talk time is 2.5 to 3.5 hr's a day. I was at the airport two days ago and jumped on their Wi-Fi to jump on the internet to track a colleagues flight coming in and checking news and had my 3G on PUSH for emails for a couple of hours and barely noticed a drain on my battery. Again, I use it as a tool for those features I need at the time and glad I had my 3G. A guy next to me had his BlackBerry open to the web and he glanced over to see the rich HTML download I had on Flight Aware and commented on how he wished he had the robustness of the 3G. On the flip side, the iPhone isn't perfect when it comes to Business usage on a regular basis. It meets my needs and if I want, I can use my company's MS Exchange server, etc... or even Mobile.Me... I just choose not to at this time. I did come over from Verizon Wireless... and I am not convinced AT&T's network (EDGE or 3G) is as reliable. I have had 4-dropped calls in area's I have never had issues with in 7-yr's with Verizon... but AT&T so far have been very good about credits. If this continues on a regular basis before my 30-days ends, I may have to consider returning to Verizon? 3G is still being rolled-out, so I am hoping its coverage and network tools improve to handle the additional user volume's. I don't care which phone you use on 3G, it will still have the same issues and burn battery life quickly if you choose to live on 3G... surf the net or use GPS to go to local grocery store, etc. It isn't a toy, its a tool to be used when you need it.

  • What kind of graphics card should i get to run final cut pro x on my 2008 mac pro?

What kind of graphics card should i get to run final cut pro x on my 2008 mac pro?

Hello Andres. I own an Early Mac Pro 2008, and have had the blessing of using both FCP X & Motion 5 for some time now. This is a pritty open question and it depends on your usage and the throughput nessesary to handle your work load. I can share what my set up is, & it may help you deside if this is enough power for you or help you move in another direction. Keep in mind that the buss speed and cpu are a big part of helping FCP X more so than the video card, although the video card does come into play here as well. Now if you are wanting to run Motion 5 as well, the video card is Almost Everything, and you need the biggest and best situation here that the throughput on this system will except. I'm running 14 gig of system ram, and the video card is an ATI Radeon 5870. For FCP X, running 1920x1280p footage optimised in pro-res 422, she can move along with some render time nessesary when dropping on the timeline, also filters, transistions, titles ex, have a bit of a laps time to render, but then she runs ok. This wait is not as much of a challenge with this set up as with Motion. I need a much bigger gpu on the video card for this app. Not sure if this computers throughput is really worth the upgrade. Beleive this though, Motion is demanding on using ALL you can give it. It is a Genious App, and it also calls for ALL THE POWER YOU CAN GIVE HER IN A VIDEO CARD. Conclution: if you are just starting which it sounds like, even a smaller video card than this can work For FCP X. Make sure you have at least 8 gig of cpu ram. 12 or more will help here. Also make sure the card is OpenCL compadible.....& this is in the thread above,,,,,,,,
