As a vision-impaired user of a 1.25GH ( 1.25MB RAM) iMac G4 I am very reluctant to try to install Leopard on it (running Tiger at the moment).  I want to have all my old non-Apple apps there.  Robert Davis.

As a vision-impaired user of an iMac G4 (1.25GH and 1.25MB of RAM) I am very wary of putting Leopard on my system.  I know if I do a clean install I'll have to put all my software back on which would take me ages as I have stuff in OS 9 as well running in Classic, but if I do an archive install I know the Apple software will go in but what happens to all my other apps?  The preamble on the disk doesn't make this really clear.  If it is too difficult then I guess it's time for a new Intel model but I like the G4 as I can get my face right up in the screen without having to move the computer, something you have to do to with the new models.  Can anyone help - I don't want to be stuck for a month without a computer until my stepson comes back from holidays as he is head of IT at a school  school that run all Macs.  Please excuse any faux pas in this - I am new to the support community.
RobertfromBradbury.

You could use A&I, selecting Preserve Users and Network Settings. This should keep your third party apps but you will lose Classic and OS 9, which are not supported by Leopard. Before upgrading, I would also check to see which third party apps may not be Leopard compatible or will need updating.
If you still want to proceed, you should definitely have a cloned bootable backup of your current setup, in case you need to revert, or find something possibly missing after you upgrade. I wouldn't make a move without one. I use Carbon Copy Cloner. You could keep the old setup that includes Classic and OS 9 on a separate partition on an external drive and still be able to work from that when needed.

You might find some apps that are not Leopard compatible.
You will also need enough free drive space to accomodate the new OS, as well as the Previous System Folder.
I don't see why you wouldn't be able to get your face right up to the screen of any of the new iMacs. And you can have a much bigger screen, 27". But you will be stuck running Lion, which will try to turn your computer into a giant iPad. A refurb might still be able to run Snow Leopard.

  • Why does my connection to Apple store constantly fail even though I have good internet connectivity to all non-apple apps?

    Hi.
All of a sudden my IOS devices are having difficulty accessing all of my Apple-store controlled apps and purchases when using my home network, even though it is a really fast network and my other devices work perfectly. Spotify, YouTube and Netflix and all apps that don't rely on Apple purchases are working perfectly on my iPad and ipod, and I have fast internet speed and perfect connectivity on all my other devices.
But when I go to Newsstand or iTunes Store for example I get the message 'can't connect to Apple server' or 'you are not connected to wifi' even though all non-Apple apps are connecting perfectly on the same device. I have tried all the usual reboot, reset solutions and nothing seems to resolve this. My software is up to date. My iPod and iPad are working perfectly when I use another network. My home network is working perfectly for everything else.
    Any ideas?

Sorry for bad English and typos, I wrote it quickly.

  • TS1702 all non-Apple apps fail to launch on my iPad

Suddenly all the non-Apple apps will not launch on my iPad (examples: Words with Friends; games; Trip Advisor; magazines, newspapers etc).  Tapping on icon causes the screen to darken for a second, like it is about to launch, and then it crashes back to the home screen.  Apple apps work fine.
All apps and operating system are up to date.  I have hard re-started the iPad twice.

Try downloading any free app from the store (as that appears to reset something) and then re-try them - the free app can then be deleted.

  • All Non-Apple Apps Keep Crashing

I updated the firmware on my friend's iPhone 3Gs from 4.1 to 4.3.3 using my computer. This is not the computer that my friend used to sync the iPhone and it was the first time when the iPhone was synced to my computer. I noticed now that all non-Apple apps crash when I try to start them. How could I fix this problem? Should I tell my friend to sync the 3Gs on the computer where it was synced before? Thanks.

    Thanks. It worked, indeed!

  • ISight not working for non-Apple apps under particular user account

I noticed that my iSight built into Macbook Pro 15" is not working anymore for non-Apple apps (Skype and Webex at least) and working for Facetime and Messages Beta under same account.
I tried to test it using different account on OS X with Skype and it is working great!
    I'm using 10.7.3.
    Any advice?

    Hi,
I take it that in System Information the camera is listed under USB items ?
Your speps say OS x 10.7.2
Have you updated to OS X 10.7.3 ?
If you have I would start with that by doing a COMBO Version (Not using Software Update)
This will be everything that has been updated since OS X 107 came out and may catch those hard to trace issues.
Using the FInder > Go Menu > Hold the ALT key and Select the Library that appears > then navigate to Preferences.
In here find the Skype .plist.
    Open it with Quick Look.
Can you capture that (Apple/CMD ( or ⌘) + Shift + 4 together (Also tap space bar at the end to get the Window) ) ? and post it here.
I don't use Skype and don't have the .plist to see if it lists the camera.
If it does it might pay to delete the.plist and force Skype to re-***** the hardware.  (It also depends how much of your other settings are in there)
In the meantime if you go to the Skype Preferences can you see a Preview of the camera ?
Can you turn Off access to the camera and turn it On again in Skype ?
Skype does use Flash Player to do the Video.
Is Webex a browser led thing that uses Flash ?
If it looks like it is a Flash Issue do you have the GoogleTalk Video Plugin installed (there is a standalone and it is part of Chrome) ?

  • Non-Apple apps don't open after iOS5 upgrade (with fix)

Hi, I thought I'd add this thread in case it's useful to someone else with the same problem.
I had a iPhone 4 on latest 4.3.5 and upgraded via iTunes to iOS5 this morning.
None of my non-Apple apps would open, they'd just open and close instantly. So Facebook, Tweetdeck, Things, BBC News etc wouldn't work but ones like Reminders, App Store etc would.
I did a restore and restore from a backup and this didn't fix the problem.
I removed the apps from memory (home double-click) and rebooted the phone and still the non-Apple apps wouldn't load.
So finally I thought I'd reinstall the apps from scratch, deleted Facebook and grabbed it again from the App Store.
This worked and fired up as normal, tried the others non-Apple apps and they all work too!
No idea why, not sure if it's specifically the Facebook app or if I could have done that too any of them.
All sorted now and iOS5 is lovely

    Confirmed!
I had the same problem, deleted a weather app (so no valuable data attached to it) re-installed it and all the other apps seem to work again.
Which single app you delete & reload doesn't seem to matter, I think you just need to re-establish the connection between the device and your App Store account in order to trigger some kind of background authorization.
It might also work by deleting nothing and just grabbing a new, free app.

  • TS1702 Safari, Maps, App Store, and Non Apple Apps crashing on IOS6

Since upgrading to IOS 6, the majority of my apps are crashing after a few seconds, including Safari, App Store, I Books and also non apple apps like BBC News etc.
    I have:
    Reset
    Restored
Tried the date and time change (not affective)
I cant at the moment even add any new apps or reinstall as this crashes.
This is so frustrating! Any one have a fix?
    Thanks, Nick

Tried both .. and then some =( no glory.
I got the onyx and ran that still crashing once loaded.
Firefox is working great and other apps work that i use its just app store and safari.
    Really weird.
    I also re-patched 10.6.6
    Cache was cleared, verified
Removed all plugins in safari folder
clear all cache on the onyx program with all options checked including the dyld.
Anyone have any suggestion. They would be greatly appreciated.

  • Non Apple Apps not working with Not.Centre

I've restored my iphone 4 twice now, each time I've started a new phone and gone through the set up on the phone. I've tested my mail app, messages app and reminders app and they work faultless with Not.Centre but when I downloaded Twitter Inc. from the app store and got an @ reply, I didn't get a notification. I've gone through all the settings, in both the Settings App and even within Twitter itself and have TURNED ON all notifications but still nothing.
I'm not going to restore again, it's just a waste of time. Does anybody have a fix for this?
    Cheers.

    Hi Groovy32,
So after the iOS update all Apple apps work fine but no non-Apple apps work?  I just updated my iPhone 6 Plus last night and haven't seen an issue so let's go further with troubleshooting as in
If an app you installed unexpectedly quits, stops responding, or won’t open - Apple Support
For example, check for App updates, try installing another app or deleting and reinstalling one that's not working.

  • Non-Apple apps close immediately when out of cell service area

    Hi,
When backpacking out of range of cellular and wifi coverage, my iPhone worked fine (for awhile) -- I would power it off, then back on, use some apps, then power it off until later.
At one point, almost all apps stopped opening.  I tried most of the apps on my phone.  To be exact, they would open, but then immediately drop me back at the home screen.  Pressing then home button twice would show me the app had opened, but selecting it would show it for a fraction of a second then drop back to the home screen.
These apps worked: Calendar, Maps, Music, Camera, Notes.Compass, Clock, Photos.
These apps didn't: Google Maps, Pandora, Sonos, Wiper, Authy, Authenticator, Clear, Gaia GPS, MyRadar, Alarmed, Stanza, Groupon, Chrome, Spotify (etc.)
I tried toggling airplane mode, wifi on/off, bluetooth, reset all phone settings, power down then back on (at least 5 times), force power off and then on (couple times).  I toggled all the settings I could think of.  Always no app would stay open (other than the ones Iisted above).
I had to cut my backpacking trip short because I could no longer interface my iPhone with my satellite communication device (it uses a bluetooth-based program on the iPhone and  the app wouldnt (stay) open).  (I need to be in contact with the office, even in the backcountry)
I left the phone on, and drove back into cell range.  As soon as I had signal, all the apps started working again.
Why did the non-apple apps stop working?  Is there some way to get them working when out of cell range?  They work when I turn on airplane mode at my house, and always have.

    There are a few threads that might provide a fix for you. Unfortunately for most people, none of these fixes address the issue;

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2101626&start=0&tstart=0

I'm simply waiting for Apple to fix this problem without having to delete everything and starting fresh over because that is not really a solution to anything. For a lot of people their iPhone is their computer. Imagine if someone told you the solution to fixing your computer after each update was to delete everything and reinstall.. hmm.

Restore iPad to Factory Default; do not restore from backup. It may be the cause of the problem.

  • I can make calls and send text messages on my new iPhone 5, but incoming calls and texts still go to my old (non-Apple) phone. Is this a problem with the phone set up, or is it a problem with my old carrier or my new carrier?

I can make calls and send texts on my new iPhone 5,  but all incoming calls and texts are received by my old (non-Apple) phone.

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
