You should clone and backup before attempting Lion.
Set yourself up to do a clean format and install of Lion to external or internal drive - you will want to boot off an external to do so.

  • Can I restore to Snow Leopard from Lion using time machine?

Can I restore to Snow Leopard from Lion using time machine?  I did not make a new partition on my external HD.  My reason for doing this is to import data from Quicken 2007 to Quicken Essentials and then upgrade back to Lion.  Can I restart and hold down the "OPTION" key upon start up that will take me to Apple Recovery HD and recover from time machine?  I'm a noob at these sort of things.  I appreciate your comments and suggestions.

Probably not. See Kappy's going back to SL from Lion guide.

You can with a Snow Leopard DVD, but if you don't have that or a Time Machine backup there's no way.

  • Can't downgrade to Snow Leopard from Lion will not recognise imac dvd

Can someone please tell me how I can downgrade from OS X Lion to Snow Leopard on my iMac
When i insert the DVD it just spins for about 10 seconds then ejects the dvd..
any help would be great thanks

Lion has installed a recovery partition on your Hard Drive and you must completely erase and reformat the Hard Drive before you can go back to Snow Leopard.

  • How can I upgrade to Snow Leopard or Lion from Leopard 10.5.8?

I can't find any way to get Snow Leopard from the apple store. It is on Amazon for $100+ and there are lots of fake ''free'' downloads online, but I don't want to use them?
Is there any ways to get to Snow Leopard or Lion from this old opperating system?!
My mac is a 2008 Macbook Pro.
    Thank you!

    Hi,
I just bought the iphone 5 but have a 2009 Macbook Pro so was running 10.5.8. Needed to upragde to snow leopard then to mountain lion. S.L. is no longer available in stores. The guy in the shop told to cal apple support (0800 048 0408) but was skepitcal. Amazin was quite expensive so I ended up ringing just to check... TOTALLY WORTH IT! Got it for £13, when I would have paid about £70. Apparently they are trying to encourage people to get SL so they can get the icloud.
Ring up! Honestly, their customer serivce was so helpful and lovely. Whole episode has reminded me why I love Apple.

  • Can I revert to Snow Leopard? Lion took my Office

I have two Macs - one an iMac, the other a laptop MacBook Pro.
Both came with and run well on Snow Leopard 10.6.6
I downloaded OS X Lion for the laptop and lost my Office 2004 and Parallels 6.
Can I revert to a Backup from pre-Lion?  Do I need to do a clean install and lose all my downloaded apps  eg Pages?
My iMac is as I want but it is frequently monopolised by She Who Must Be Obeyed who uses it alongside her work-from-home computer.

    Hello:
"She who must be obeyed"  That broke me up - TY for the chuckle!
Anyway, the way I would proceed would be to restore the system from either a Time Machine bakup or a bootlable clone.  I don't think you would be able to reinstall OS X 10.6 on a system that has already been updated to OS X 10.7.

P.S.  I encountered the Office 2004 issue myself.  I decided that Office 2011 was not worth $150, so I moved to iWork.  iWork included a word processing program (Pages) which is fully compatible with Microsoft's Word.  I like it better, but that is just my own reaction.

  • HT1444 can i upgrade from snow leopard to lion

how can i upgrade from OS x 10.6.8 to (snow leopard) to OS X 10.7 Lion

dominic23 is correct.  Use the main number for the apple store (you can also find it at http://www.apple.com/buy/).   They ask a couple questions to make sure your hardware can support the OS then pay for it over the phone. I received an order confirmation almost immediately.  Currently waiting for the link to download the software.

  • Can I dual boot Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion on one hard drive?

I want to make a new partition and be able to boot to either OS. Is this possible, if so, how? I would think just make a new partition and install the dmg file to that new partition.

@jimmyk11: AppleCare has actually informed me that "No - this MacBooPro9,1 cannot boot Snow Leopard".
It originally came with lion 10.7.4 installed. I have since upgraded to Mountain Lion 10.8 and (today, after a week or so of ML) I reverted to Lion 10.7.4. But now I find I can no longer boot into Lion 10.7.4 from my external FW800 drive (for troubleshooting and housekeeping). So it looks as if the "boot problems" are not confined to Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
Interestingly, I can use this same external drive to boot my iMac (10.7.4) and my older MBP8,3 (10.8) into 10.7.4 - but not the newer MBP9,1.
The MBP9,1 with Lion and Mountain Lion is turning into a disaster when it comes to external booting. If I could, I'd demand a return and a refund. After bottle-feeding Lion for a year, 10.7.4 seems basically stable and can still boot into Snow Leopard and Lion from my external drives if needed. But now I see I have a worse problem: Crippled Hardware. I suspect this bug needs a firmware update - if it is fixable at all.

  • HT3910 Can I use Mac OS version 10.5.6 to install on MacBook Snow Leopard version 10.6.8?

Can I use Mac OS X Install DVD and Application DVD, both version 10.5.6 to install on MacBook Snow Leopard version 10.6.8?
    Thank you

Only if those disks are the ones which shipped with the computer. Retail packages never came with an Applications disk. If they are, install them onto a blank partition or drive.

  • Can I download Yosemite onto a thumb drive and install it on snow leopard later

can I download Yosemite onto a thumb drive and install it on snow leopard later

    Yes.
Create a bootable installer for OS X Mavericks or Yosemite - Apple Support
Open the Terminal in the Utilities folder. Copy and paste the following command line in its entirety into the Terminal window.
    sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite\ Developer\ Preview.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite\ Developer\ Preview.app --nointeraction
Press RETURN, enter admin password (will not echo to the window) then press RETURN again.
You need to have the installer in your Applications folder or change the paths in the above command line.

  • Can I install Snow Leopard over Lion to install old software after hard drive crashed?

My hard drive crashed and I lost everything.  I have a new hard drive, but when the repair shop installed my operating system, they installed Lion and I no longer have my prior updates.  My computer had been updated a few times.  I have a lot of software that only can be installed up to 10.7 such as Adobe Photoshop Elements 10, Office Mac 2011, etc.  I was wondering if I installed Snow Leopard over Lion, would I lose Lion?  Should I install Snow Leopard and then Lion again?  I don't want to damage my like new computer and I don't want to have to go out and buy all new software.  Is there a solution?  Thanks in advance!

Sounds complicated!  If I repartition the drive and install Snow Leopard onto the blank volume, will Lion still be there?  Or, will the computer basically have two operating systems that I have to go back and forth from.  Is this something a novice like myself can do?

  • Can I dual boot snow leopard and mountain lion if I've installed boot camp on my drive

Can I dual boot snow leopard and mountain lion if I've installed boot camp on my drive

Yes as I said before. If your model Mac came with Snow Leopard and you are now running Mt Lion and have Windows installed in a Boot Camp Partition all you have to do is make the Mt Lion partition smaller, take the free space and make it another Mac partition and you should be able to install Snow Leopard into that partition.
I have Snow Leopard, Lion and Mt Lion installed on my MBP. No Windows in a Boot Camp partition because I run Windows XP in a Virtual Machine on both Lion and Mt Lion.
