As of the new year neither my pages application nor any of my documents will open on my Mac.  What is the likely problem?

I am working on reviewing some material periodically while visiting Ecuador.  I had no issues prior to the Christmas season, but just received new material this week and cannot open my application, my documents nor those documents I have on drop box.  The app on my ipad is working fine, but I want to manipulte my documents before sending them off to work using the full features of my mac.  HAs something been implemented in the last couple of weeks that is causing my problem?  I have ensured that I have no outstanding updates to install.  ANy help would be very much appreciated.

What version of OSX, you say OSX 10.6.8, is that correct?
What version of Pages?
Have you updated your System to OSX 10.9 Mavericks and Pages 5?
