As soon as I power on, with no active programs, the 4gig memory fills up and bogs down completely.  Is there any way to start up in a safe mode so I can see what is running?

I have a 2007 imac.  Is there any way to see what programs are running when started up?  my 4 gig gets usurped almost instantly with no visible applications running.

You can open Activity Monitor and see what's running. If you are not familiar with AM, please read Activity Monitor to read System Memory and determine how much RAM is being used
