ASA 5510, 8.4(4)1 totally confused NAT
I'll try to keep this simple. I've spent about 18 hours researching, searching and experimenting, and that's an honest figure, I kept track of my time so far.
I need to run an inside server on our inside network but have the outside be able to reach it via 3 specific ports and protocols.
I had HOPED to use objects and groups to accomplish this and not have to redefine this server or host 3 times and run 3 or more NAT statements as that totally defeats the concept and purpose of objects, doesn't it? But the NAT statement seems to refuse to deal with GROUPS. I can put a single SERVICE, or a single port in the NAT, but I can't get a single NAT line under a single object - this server, to take multiple ports that are not a range.
Here's the need - I'll define each thing first to keep it simple and straight (at least in my head):
Interface that faces or sits on the dirty Internet is named "WAN" (why I do not know but it is and it's too complex to change it now)
WAN, the outside interface, has an IP address of 1.1.1.66
Our provider has given us 16 public hosts or addresses we can use.
(1.1.1.67 is on the failover ASA for this same interface.)
My server on the inside LAN is 10.10.10.70
I need to use a DIFFERENT address as I need to keep it apart from the 1.1.1.66 and 1.1.1.67 used on the 5510 pair WAN interface.
I want to use a specific Internet address of 1.1.1.68 for outside to access the server sitting on 10.10.10.70 on the inside.
BUT, I want access for UDP 500, UDP 4500 and ESP only, nothing else.
The idea is this - something on the outside, meaning on the Internet, needs my server on the inside so hits the WAN interface at this IP address of 1.1.1.68 UDP port 500 or 4500 or ESP to get to my server on the LAN inside.
The ASA has to notice traffic on UDP 500, 4500 and ESP aimed at 1.1.1.68 and translate it to the SAME ports on 10.10.10.70.
So I need a NAT that will say traffic hitting 1.1.1.68 UDP 500 or UDP 4500 or ESP should be forwarded to 10.10.10.70 UDP 500, or UDP 4500 or ESP.
The server needs to respond back of course!
So very simple it's done all the time. "port forwarding" and a static NAT - that server always would be found at 1.1.1.68 if you were outside looking in and it would also always go out as that address. but inside we know it as 10.10.10.70
I can seem to get NAT to take if I use a single service or define a single service, but when I create a service group that has UDP 500, UDP 4500 and ESP in it, it won't recognize any group - it pukes if I say any word except SERVICE in the NAT statement.
This is one way I've tried, but then 8.3 and later don't seem to like this and the word "source" is killing me and I can't find reference to it anywhere.

where servernetworkobject is the name I've defined for the network object in the ASA and WANsecondIP is the address I want to use defined as a network object and mygroup is the group I created that contains the 3 services or ports.
Those aren't real names or addresses so it's not really that corny in the configuration, I just cleaned it up for public use
ALL examples I find on the web, including Cisco sites, look a lot like this, but then I also see it must be defined with the network object itself and that's different than the samples on the Cisco sites! I'm SO confused.... Object should simplify this in spades, instead it's making it a lot harder and making the configuration a whole lot bigger and more clumsy.
Well, you nailed it again. I did find a little feature in the ASDM that is called "public server". It appeared to be similar to what I wanted to do.
I followed what you advised there, but experimented in the ASDM as well and found that it matched what I was doing manually, including being able to use the port group I'd created.
Odd that it's done there and not in NAT as I'd prefer to not translate ALL ports and protocols but ONLY those directly related to my project as in my mind if the others aren't even translated at all, then if the access list is bad or off or somehow removed or modified, no big deal as the NAT or PAT would not translate those other ports so nothing could get to the server anyway, it wouldn't know where to find it!
So to me, doing this ALL through NAT is far more secure, safer. If it can't find the server, it can't touch the server. This method of doing it is more like putting the server on display but locking the windows. You can see it, you can get translated to and from it, but we'll not let you touch it. Look, but don't touch. I'd rather say "ha ha ha - you can't even see it! You don't even know it exists!
And this is even MORE odd because if it was a SINGLE protocol or port, say it was a WEB server, I could NAT the address and tell it port 80 to port 80 and pretty much be done. But since it's more than 1 port, because it's 2 ports, I can't do it in NAT. Well, I could by defining TWO objects, I could call it "server1 ip x.x.x.x port 80 port 80" and then define a second object "server2 ip x.x.x.x port 443 port 443" for example.
And I can define both objects just like that, sort of, and I can NAT each address/port to the SAME object, but I can't do it with a single object and single NAT. I could if it was a PORT RANGE, making this even more odd that Cisco won't allow 2 ports.
So I can create 2 objects, point BOTH objects to the exact same IP address or server, then NAT the same addresses, but a different port using 2 NAT, or I can NAT using a range like 80-443 for example and be done with it in a single object, single NAT. But since the two ports aren't contiguous, I can't do it at one NAT even with an object group.
And that's what threw me - there is absolutely no logic in that! There's no logic in allowing me to define multiple ports using a range, allowing me to create and define two objects, both of which point to the same IP/server and do it that way, and I can create an object group with multiple ports, but the NAT won't use the group. That's rather bizarre to me.
So I have the second outside IP address defined as an object, and I have the server NIC address defined as an object,
I have the ports each defined, and then a group defined using the port objects,
Later there is an access list like this that will use the ports group:
access-list WAN_access extended permit object-group vpn-ports any object vpn_gateway
Then below that, there is:
object network vpn_gateway
nat (inside,WAN) static vpn-out
access-group WAN_access in interface WAN
This is how the ASDM put it, not in the same order as you had it, and not how I was putting things manually but the way things are ordered in the configuration is still a mystery to me with all the this before that and so on.
I think what helped to confuse me was all of the other posts and articles on the web speaking to this same sort of topic - and the fact that a lot of them had the versions mixed up. I'd read a question where someone had 8.3 or later, but a response would come back which I later discovered wasn't for that version but was for 8.2 for example. Then I'd read posts about doing this exact same thing in 8.2 and someone would pop in and toss a totally different code into the mix which I later discovered was part for 8.2 and part for 8.3 and wouldn't work at all because of the mixing. So bottom line, too much of what's out there on this exact topic is not correct, or not TOTALLY correct, because people are failing to READ what the original question posted had as the VERSION Amazing how folks coming in to help fail to catch the VERSION the person with the question is running and they continue on as if the world is using the same version they are. (I see that on our car forum daily - no one bothered to read that it was a 6 cylinder and not a V8 so they go on as if they have it covered....wrong engine folks ;-) )
Thanks - it isn't kicking errors, I've not had a chance to TEST yet, but it does seem to make sense now and your response makes sense compared to what I know now.
(Now to figure out how to add a second subnet to the existing server for internal use without confusing things!)

ASA 5510 NAT with IOS 9.1

Hoping someone can clear this up for me.
I am trying to setup a ASA 5510 with IOS 9.1 and having NAT issues.
The ASA is connected inside the LAN to separate a second LAN.
Internal (10.0.0.0/24) --> DG RTR (10.0.0.254) FE0/0--> FE0/1 (61.0.0.1/24) --> ASA outside (61.0.0.2/24) --> ASA Inside (192.168.1.0//24)
I keep getting Asymetric NAT rules matched for forward and reverse path flows when going from Internal to ASA Inside LAN
I fear it is my lack of understanding, when you have a router you can go between different LANs/subnets but with the ASA does it always NAT whatever happens?
If I statically NAT a device on the ASA Inside LAN I can get to the device via the 61.0.0.0 address and if I add what I believe to be an exemption rule to keep the translated packet the same as long as I specify something like Internal LAN to ASA Inside specific device it works but not if I do Internal LAN to ASA Inside LAN.
Hope that makes sense and someone can give me a clue to where I am going wrong with the setup / understanding.
If there are any good docs that might explain it would be appreciated as everything I have read so far has not given me an clarity.

Just to clarify, are we talking about a situation the ASA is simply connected to an internal network (even though it might use public IP addresses)? Also, do you want to perform any NAT on this ASA or is there some separate firewall sitting at the edge of your network handling the external connectivity?
If the above things are true then you could simply leave your ASA NAT configuration totally blank and the ASA would not do any NAT to the traffic. This naturally would require that you make sure that routing for subnet 192.168.1.0/24 is handled on all the routers/devices on the network as this subnet would be directly visible with its original addresses (since we would leave the ASA NAT configuration blank). I manage a couple of environments where the customer has a internal ASA separating certain section of the LAN network and they dont have any NAT configurations.
The problems you mention in the post are probably due to Dynamic PAT configuration which means that your LAN can access the other parts of the Internal network but no connection is possible from the Internal network to this separate LAN behind the ASA. The reason there is that the connection from Internal LAN to the separate LAN wont match any NAT configuration but the return traffic (reverse check that the ASA does) will match the Dynamic PAT and that is why the traffic is dropped.
Static NAT done to the hosts behind the ASA will naturally help since there wont be any problems with the translation in that case in either direction.

ASA 5510 Not able to route traffic between 2 LAN interfaces
Hi everybody,
I need help to enable traffic between two physical ports on my Cisco ASA 5510. I created access rules and NAT but traffic doe not go from accounting interface to Inside. I am able to access internet from both interfaces. Can someone pin point me in the right direction since I am not an expert in Cisco but has to finish this by the end of the week.

On an ASA, higher security level interfaces are always allowed, by default, to lower security levels, but not the other way around. So, if you want to keep this config, you would need an acl on the Inside interface to allow traffic to go from level 90 to 100:

access-group Inside in interface Inside
The acl will permit the traffic into either interface (outside or Accounting). As long as you have your other rules set up correctly, this should resolve your issue...

ASA 5510 - Setting up ACL to permit access only to the Nat'ed subnet
Hi,
I experiencing an issue in setting up an ACL on my ASA 5510 to permit access only to the Nat subnet from inside to the outside interface. This firewall is setup for the DR solution in the production network. I am applying following acl in the inbound direction on the inside interface.

After appliying this acl to inside interface I observed that I can ping to the destinations in NAT'ed subnet but unable to ssh to the servers. Following is the summary of my configuration. I would appreciate if someone please advice to resolve this issue.

As I mentioned even though you NAT the address from outside to inside you will have to use the REAL IP ADDRESSES in the access-list statements
Your hosts on inside will still be connecting to the NAT IP address of the hosts on outside BUT the ASA needs the ACL statements with the NATed hosts original IP addresses

Even i have the base license for my ASA 5510 which is showing all the 4 interfaces in sh ver. I don't think so license would be an issue. There should be some IOS code bug that needs to be upgraded. If this goes for an OS upgrade it should get resolved.
Its not showing up in sh ver . As Karsten said he might be running on old IOS version.

ASA 5510 with Cisco 2811 Router Behind it - Not forwarding traffic
Hi all,
Some might know that I have been dealing with an issue where I cannot seem to get forwarded packets to reach their destinations behind an ASA 5510 that has a Cisco 2811 connected directly behind it.
Some examples that work.
I can SSH into the ASA.
I can SSH to the Cisco Routers behind the ASA.
I cannot reach items beind the Cisco Routers.
My Configuration is this (I am sure I included a bunch of info I didn't need to, but I am hoping it'll help!):
I have a static Ip assigned to my Ouside Interface Ethernet 0/1
It has an IP address of 199.195.xxx.xxx
I am trying to learn how to shape network traffic (this is all new to me) via the ASA and the Routers to specific devices.
The Inside Interface on the ASA is 10.10.1.1 255.255.255.252
The Outside Interface on the 2811 is 10.10.1.2 255.255.255.252
I can ping the router from the ASA. I can SSH through the ASA to the router.
BUT I CANNOT ACCESS DEVICES BEHIND THE ROUTER.
So, I wanted to BAM that statement above because I just don't kjnow where the issue is. Is the issue on the router or the ASA, my guess is, the router, but I just don't know.
Here are my configs, helpfully someone can help.
ASA errors on the ASDM when I try and hit resources; specifically a web device behind the ASA and the 2811. It's Ip address 192.168.1.5 it's listening on port 80.Static IP, not assigned via DHCP.

no message-leI ran those commands while I had the nat off on the router and here are the results. note, i didn't make any changes to the ASA as you only said to remove the router RIP which I did and reloaded and no change.
As long as the statements ip nat outside on the Fastethernet 0/0 is off and the ip nat inside is off on the vlan and the overload statement is taken out, I cannot hit the internet.

Site to Site VPN with 2 ASA 5510's
Hello guys,
Im hoping yall can help me with the following objective. I have been tasked to make a site to site VPN between two networks. We are both using an ASA 5510.
This is the scenario:
SiteA has an wan adress of (example) 20.20.20.20 - The firewall is connected to a DMZ range : 192.168.0.0 255.255.255.0. In this range there is another firewall which grants/blocks acces to the internal range. 10.20.0.0 255.255.0.0
SiteB has an wan adress of (example) 21.21.21.21 - The internal range is 10.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 No DMZ.
How can i connect these 2 devices since there is an overlap. I am gonna need to use nat right? Can someone give me readable Access rule/Nat Rule and maybe advice / some other things i need to think of.

Well regarding the remote site I suppose if they are using hosts from ranges 10.0.1.0/24 and 10.0.2.0/24 they could simply NAT these portions of the network towards the L2L VPN connection. For example NAT them to subnets 192.168.101.0/24 and 192.168.102.0/24
But you also seem to have a large subnet on your side since its 10.20.0.0/16. Because of this I would suggest narrowing it down to the hosts or smaller subnets like above with the remote site because simply NATing the whole subnet 10.20.0.0/16 to some other private range that is NOT from the 10.0.0.0/8 range would probably cause problems in the long run.
Lets presume that on your side the network that needs to access the L2L VPN is 10.20.1.0/24 and we would NAT that to 192.168.201.0/24 then your NAT configuration could look like this

In the above configuration we first create an "object" for both the actual internal DMZ subnet and the subnet that we will NAT it to. Then we create an "object-group" that will have inside it both of the remote NATed networks (NAT performed at the remote site).
Finally the "nat" command itself will perform NAT between "dmz" and "outside" interface and it will NAT "DMZ-INTERNAL" to "DMZ-INTERNAL-NAT" when the destination is "REMOTE-NETWORKS". The NAT configuration is bidirectional so it naturally handles which ever directin the connection is attempted. The names of the objects are up to the user.
The ACL that defines the local and remote networks for the L2L VPN should use the NAT subnets of each site.
If you want to restrict the traffic from the remote site then this can be done in a couple of ways. At its default settings the ASA will allow ALL traffic from the remote site behind the L2L VPN connection.
You can use the command "show run all sysopt" to list some configurations that will tell us how your ASA has been set to handle VPN related traffic. The command we are looking for is "sysopt connection permit-vpn". This is the default setting that allows all traffic from VPN connections. If you were to change this to "no sysopt connection permit-vpn" then you could simply use the interface ACL of the interface that terminates the L2L VPN connection on your side to select what traffic is allowed. You would allow traffic the same way as if you were allowing traffic from Internet to your servers.
The problem with this setup is if you have other existing VPN connections (VPN Client and L2L VPN) because they would also require their traffic to be allowed in your external interfaces ACL if you changed the above mentioned global setting.
The other option is to configure a VPN Filter ACL that you will then attach to a "group-policy". You will then attach that "group-policy" to the "tunnel-group" of the L2L VPN connection.
The actual ACL used for the VPN Filter purpose is a norma ACL but you will always have to configure the remote network as the source in the ACL and this usually causes some confusion.

Cisco ASA 5510 site to site VPN only
Hi,
Need some expert help. I will be deploying the CISCO ASA 5510 in VPN site to site scenario only. One interface will be for the WAN and the other LAN interface is connected to another firewall appliance. The main purpose of the ASA is for branch site VPN connection only. My default gateway is pointing to the Internet router on my WAN inteface. Should NAT be enabled on my WAN inteface? The only expected traffic to go thru my ASA is VPN traffic to the other site. I have already defined static routes and have gone thru the wizard for site to site VPN and added my local and remote networks. Also how do I approach my access policies, the default deny any any is in place. Should I allow anything on it? The firewall connected to my LAN interface is expected to do the filtering, like I said the ASA's purpose is just to do VPN site to site. Thanks allThanks Jon. That is what I want to clarify as well, running the VPN site to site wizard, will automatically create the 'cryptomap' access rules, will the existing deny all rule apply to the VPN traffic? I think there was an option that VPN traffic will bypass access rules.
So having NAT enabled for anything that goes out on My WAN inteface would not matter at all, even if the VPN traffic will go out of that interface right? Hope I don't sound confusing.
As per your second question, I know it sounds weird and is not good network design, but customer just renewed maintenance contract for the other firewall box that is why he does not want to get rid of it yet. Although ISA can perform the function as well. Thanks. -
Remote access VPN with ASA 5510 using DHCP server

Can someone please share your knowledge to help me find why I am not able to receive an IP address on remote access VPN connection while I can get an IP address on local DHCP pool?

ASA 5510 cannot connect to Microsoft IAS
I'm at a total loss here. I am transitioning from a Microsoft ISA server to a Cisco ASA 5510. So far so good, until it comes to getting AAA functioning properly. I have a Microsoft IAS server that is functioning properly, however when I try to test it through the ASA's ASDM it errors out. When I run a packet trace it shows it's being blocked by the dreaded implicit ACL. The funny thing is that I can ping and traceroute to the IAS server from the ASA. I found numerous config examples for AAA using IAS, but still not working.
Could it possibly be behaving this way because my ASA and my IAS server are on two different internal netowrks? (172.31.1.x-ASA, 10.1.1.x-IAS)
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!Ohh no no, That is going to work, anything placed from the ASA firewall itself will work cuz it does not have anything that would limit the Control plane.
Now, would you care to share the packet tracer (without the detail command please), remove the addresses and what no to see at which point does it fail?

This definitely confuses me, because SITECORP has an inbound access-list of permit ip any any.

That is correct no matter what ACE (access-list entries) you have configured on one interface, if that interface wants to talk to another one with the same security level, the connection would not be allowed (Asa/Pix speaking)
But you do not have to change the Security level, of course that is one work-around but again the solution is :
- same-security-traffic permit inter-interface

Setting up a ASA 5510 cannot get SMTP to come in
I have a ASA 5510 (ver 8.4) and I have been all over the support sites looking for what I am doing wrong. I have a sanitized cut n paste of the OBJECT, NAT, ACCESS-LIST and Packet Tracer output and it keeps failing on the NAT with a rpf-check. Once i get the SMTP flowing I have to open up HTTP and HTTPS to one of the servers also.

Basically what the values of 50,000 and 130000 connections indicate are lab values tested with 80% TCP and 20% udp traffic. (according to table a-2 in the doc below)

RTP is udp traffic but in case of an asa and considering a customer scenario what happens is...
1 voip call = 1 control connection (h323,sip,sccp) + 2 or 4 rtp connections
-so a call will in total easily consume 5 or more connections depending on control connections you have set up .
-also this number differs depending on if the call is voice only or video.
So to simply answer your questions...
1>the number of connections that a call consumes depends on the above factors.
2>Also there is no hard number on the number of calls an asa can handle because this depends on the controls you use ...including nat and inspections.

Multiple gateways for different Traffic on ASA 5510 firewall

My network atthe moment is set up as:
WAN, with three sites
Site 1
Site 2
Site 3
Site 1 is behind a non-Cisco firewall, which is connected to the internet via a Frame Relay link (using a Cisco 1721 router). We host a number of servers on the Internal network and DMZ's.
All sites connect to the WAN using Cisco routers or switches.
All internet traffic (IN and OUT) for all sites goes via the non-Cisco firewall.
I am interested in the ASA 5510 with six interfaces.
Using the ASA 5510 is it possible to set up two (2) internet connections, one via the Frame Relay and a second internet connection via an ADSL connection?
Then, is it possible to direct the outward-bound traffic via specific gateways based upon either:
(a) the type of traffic, say HTTP from users behind the firewall; or
(b) the IP addresses of the host (i.e. users' PC versus the servers)
Any assistance is welcome.

IT@Cyes you can do this with policy routing on the internet router in front of the firewall assuming that you are connecting both ISPs to that router. Also, remember that you can do vlans on the ASA. This may cut down on the # of interfaces that you use in your config.

Thanks very much for your reply. I understand where you coming from, but the reason of using sub-interfaces is that, we have only one physical interface on the firewall connected to the MPLS cloud, and we need to setup a seperate IPSec tunnels for each client for security and integrity. In the current scenario, I have static peers and we can easily setup a static route to peer address.
