ASA 5510 & Object-groups

I have an ASA 5510 and have just started using object-groups which are super handy in theory, but not working in reality. I have a service object-group with a mix of tcp, icmp, and udp ports. Let's call it Sample_Port_Group. I'm trying to apply it to my dmz_access_in ACL. Here's the line giving me problems:
access-list dmz_access_in extended permit object-group Sample_Port_Group 192.168.1.1 any
The asa throws up an error between 192.168.1.1 and any. When I put up a ? after Sample_Port_Group, it gives me the option of putting in an IP address, any, etc. When I put in a ? after 192.168.1.1, it only gives me the option of putting in an IP address.
Going off these posts:
- http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa81/config/guide/nwaccess.html
Those posts gave me the impression my line was possible, especially the "access-list outsideacl extended permit object-group myaclog interface inside any" line, which is at the end of the 2nd article linked.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Adam!
You are doing it right, you are just missing on little keyword.
The line should be as this:
access-list dmz_access_in extended permit object-group Sample_Port_Group host 192.168.1.1 any
or you could specify the subnetmask as:
access-list dmz_access_in extended permit object-group Sample_Port_Group 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.255 any

  • Easy way to detect unused network objects/groups on ASA

    Hello,
I find that every 6-12 months I will log on to the ASDM and go to the Network Objects/Groups section and spend ages right clicking on each object and seeing if it is still being used and if it isn't I then delete it.  It can take a long time as our config is large, are there any better ways of keeping the ASA update to date?
    Thanks

    Hello,
I know that this is a very old post, however, starting in ASDM 7.1(3), there is a "Not Used" button in the app.  Click it and it will provide you list of objects/groups that are not being used in ACLs.  You can then choose which objects to delete (they're all checked by default).
As of 7.1(4), however, there is no such feature for protocols/protocol groups.
Hopefully this helps someone - I know that it saved me a lot of time in a few firewall migration projects!
    Rob.

  • ASA 5510 with Cisco 2811 Router Behind it - Not forwarding traffic

    Hi all,
Some might know that I have been dealing with an issue where I cannot seem to get forwarded packets to reach their destinations behind an ASA 5510 that has a Cisco 2811 connected directly behind it.
    Some examples that work.
I can SSH into the ASA.
I can SSH to the Cisco Routers behind the ASA.
I cannot reach items beind the Cisco Routers.
My Configuration is this (I am sure I included a bunch of info I didn't need to, but I am hoping it'll help!):
I have a static Ip assigned to my Ouside Interface Ethernet 0/1
It has an IP address of 199.195.xxx.xxx
I am trying to learn how to shape network traffic (this is all new to me) via the ASA and the Routers to specific devices.
The Inside Interface on the ASA is 10.10.1.1 255.255.255.252
The Outside Interface on the 2811 is 10.10.1.2 255.255.255.252
I can ping the router from the ASA. I can SSH through the ASA to the router.
BUT I CANNOT ACCESS DEVICES BEHIND THE ROUTER.
So, I wanted to BAM that statement above because I just don't kjnow where the issue is. Is the issue on the router or the ASA, my guess is, the router, but I just don't know.
Here are my configs, helpfully someone can help.
ASA errors on the ASDM when I try and hit resources; specifically a web device behind the ASA and the 2811. It's Ip address 192.168.1.5 it's listening on port 80.Static IP, not assigned via DHCP.

I ran those commands while I had the nat off on the router and here are the results. note, i didn't make any changes to the ASA as you only said to remove the router RIP which I did and reloaded and no change.
As long as the statements ip nat outside on the Fastethernet 0/0 is off and the ip nat inside is off on the vlan and the overload statement is taken out, I cannot hit the internet.

  • Internet Access from Inside to Outside ASA 5510 ver 9.1

Hi everyone, I need help setting up an ASA 5510 to allow all traffic going from the inside to outside so I can get internet access through it. I have worked on this for days and I have finally got traffic moving between my router and my ASA, but that is it. Everything is blocked because of NAT rules I assume.
I get errors like this when I try Packet Tracer:
    (nat-xlate-failed) NAT failed
(acl-drop) Flow is denied by configured rule
    Version Information:
Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance Software Version 9.1(4)
    Device Manager Version 7.1(5)
Compiled on Thu 05-Dec-13 19:37 by builders
    System image file is "disk0:/asa914-k8.bin"
Here is my ASA config, all I want for this exercise is to pass traffic from the inside network to the outside to allow internet access so I can access the internet and then look for specific acl's or nat for specific services:
    Thank You!

Hi all,Hello everyone, I need some help before my head explodes. Idddddddd

    Hello Mitchell,
First of all how are you testing this:
    interface Ethernet0/0
    description LAN Interface
    nameif Inside
    security-level 100
    ip address 10.10.1.1 255.255.255.252
Take in consideration that the netmask is /30
The Twice NAT is good, ACLs are good.
do the following and provide us the result
    packet-tracer input inside tcp 10.10.1.2 1025 4.2.2.2 80
    packet-tracer input inside tcp 192.168.1.100 1025 4.2.2.2 80
    And provide us the result!

  • Access from Inside to Outside ASA 5510 ver 9.1

    Hi All,
I need some help in getting an ASA up and processing traffic from the inside network to the internet. I have a Cisco 2811 Router behind a Cisco ASA 5510. From the ASA I can ping the 2811 and I can ping IP addresses on the internet. I have updated the IOS and ASDM on the router to the newest versions. 9.1(4) and 7.1. I believe the problem is in the Objects, ACL and getting those together, but I don't know much about the ASA and I don't know how the post 8.2 setup works. I am hoping I can get some help here to get me up and running so I can access the internet from behind the ASA.
Here is my ASA Config and I will post some of the 2811 Router config as well, though I am not sure thati s where the issue lies, but at this point, I haven't a clue. Both are up to date for the newest versions of the respective IOS.

  • Site to Site VPN with 2 ASA 5510's

    Hello guys,
Im hoping yall can help me with the following objective. I have been tasked to make a site to site VPN between two networks. We are both using an ASA 5510.
    This is the scenario:
SiteA has an wan adress of (example) 20.20.20.20  - The firewall is connected to a DMZ range : 192.168.0.0 255.255.255.0. In this range there is another firewall which grants/blocks acces to the internal range. 10.20.0.0 255.255.0.0
SiteB has an wan adress of (example) 21.21.21.21 - The internal range is 10.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 No DMZ.
How can i connect these 2 devices since there is an overlap. I am gonna need to use nat right? Can someone give me readable  Access rule/Nat Rule and maybe advice / some other things i need to think of.
Hope to hear from yall. Any advice is highly appriciated.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
Well regarding the remote site I suppose if they are using hosts from ranges 10.0.1.0/24 and 10.0.2.0/24 they could simply NAT these portions of the network towards the L2L VPN connection. For example NAT them to subnets 192.168.101.0/24 and 192.168.102.0/24
But you also seem to have a large subnet on your side since its 10.20.0.0/16. Because of this I would suggest narrowing it down to the hosts or smaller subnets like above with the remote site because simply NATing the whole subnet 10.20.0.0/16 to some other private range that is NOT from the 10.0.0.0/8 range would probably cause problems in the long run.
Lets presume that on your side the network that needs to access the L2L VPN is 10.20.1.0/24 and we would NAT that to 192.168.201.0/24 then your NAT configuration could look like this
    object network DMZ-INTERNAL
      subnet 10.20.1.0 255.255.255.0
    object network DMZ-INTERNAL-NAT
     subnet 192.168.201.0 255.255.255.0
    object-group network REMOTE-NETWORKS
     network-object 192.168.101.0 255.255.255.0
     network-object 192.168.102.0 255.255.255.0
    nat (dmz,outside) 1 source static DMZ-INTERNAL DMZ-INTERNAL-NAT destination static REMOTE-NETWORKS REMOTE-NETWORKS
In the above configuration we first create an "object" for both the actual internal DMZ subnet and the subnet that we will NAT it to. Then we create an "object-group" that will have inside it both of the remote NATed networks (NAT performed at the remote site).
Finally the "nat" command itself will perform NAT between "dmz" and "outside" interface and it will NAT "DMZ-INTERNAL" to "DMZ-INTERNAL-NAT" when the destination is "REMOTE-NETWORKS". The NAT configuration is bidirectional so it naturally handles which ever directin the connection is attempted. The names of the objects are up to the user.
The ACL that defines the local and remote networks for the L2L VPN should use the NAT subnets of each site.
If you want to restrict the traffic from the remote site then this can be done in a couple of ways. At its default settings the ASA will allow ALL traffic from the remote site behind the L2L VPN connection.
You can use the command "show run all sysopt" to list some configurations that will tell us how your ASA has been set to handle VPN related traffic. The command we are looking for is "sysopt connection permit-vpn". This is the default setting that allows all traffic from VPN connections. If you were to change this to "no sysopt connection permit-vpn" then you could simply use the interface ACL of the interface that terminates the L2L VPN connection on your side to select what traffic is allowed. You would allow traffic the same way as if you were allowing traffic from Internet to your servers.
The problem with this setup is if you have other existing VPN connections (VPN Client and L2L VPN) because they would also require their traffic to be allowed in your external interfaces ACL if you changed the above mentioned global setting.
The other option is to configure a VPN Filter ACL that you will then attach to a "group-policy". You will then attach that "group-policy" to the "tunnel-group" of the L2L VPN connection.
The actual ACL used for the VPN Filter purpose is a norma ACL but you will always have to configure the remote network as the source in the ACL and this usually causes some confusion.

  • ASA 5510 Not able to route traffic between 2 LAN interfaces

    Hi everybody,
I need help to enable traffic between two physical ports on my Cisco ASA 5510. I created access rules and NAT but traffic doe not go from accounting interface to Inside. I am able to access internet from both interfaces. Can someone pin point me in the right direction since I am not an expert in Cisco but has to finish this by the end of the week.

Without diving too deep into your config, I noticed a couple of things:
    interface Ethernet0/1
     description Inside Network
     nameif Inside
     security-level 90
     ip address 192.168.10.1 255.255.255.0
    interface Ethernet0/2
     description Accounting
     nameif Accounting
     security-level 100
     ip address 20.0.1.1 255.255.255.0
On an ASA, higher security level interfaces are always allowed, by default, to lower security levels, but not the other way around. So, if you want to keep this config, you would need an acl on the Inside interface to allow traffic to go from level 90 to 100:
access-list Inside permit ip any any
    access-group Inside in interface Inside
The acl will permit the traffic into either interface (outside or Accounting). As long as you have your other rules set up correctly, this should resolve your issue...
    HTH,
    John

    Hello Scott,
So Exchange server ip is obj-192.168.1.65 natted to 216.x.x.x
    object network obj-192.168.1.65
    "nat (inside,outside) static 216.XXX.XXX.XXX no-proxy-arp"
    The ACL says
    access-list outside_access extended permit tcp object-group Red-Condor object-group Exchange-Server eq smtp
    access-list outside_access extended permit tcp object-group Red-Condor object-group Exchange-Server eq pop3
From witch ip addresses are you trying to send traffic to the exchange server?
Please do a packet-tracer and give us the output
    packet-tracer input outside tcp x.x.x.x( Outside host ip) 1025 216.x.x.x.x 25

  • Shared Public IP to two Servers - ASA 5510 8.3. NAT/PAT

I have a situation where we have a single DMZ server currently statically forwarded to a single public IP.  TCP ports 80, 443, 8080, 8500, 53, and 21 are open to this server via an access list.
However, we have added an additional server to the DMZ, and because our web developers did not communicate with me beforehand, we are forced to use the same DNS name (thus, the same piblic IP) for this server.  This server only needs traffic on TCP/8800 forwarded to it.
I am using ASDM 6.4 for configuration of this, as I am required to take multiple screen shots of the procedure for our change control policy.
My question lies in the reconfiguration of NAT/ PAT.  Since our current server has a single static NAT to a single public IP, it is simply natted for "any" port.  I understand that I can add the new server as an object, and only PAT it on TCP 8800, but will I then have to go back and reconfigure the first server multiple times for PAT, or will the ASA notice the specific PAT, and forward 8800 to the new server without affecting the existing "old" server?
It appears ASDM will not allow me to put multiple ports into a single network object.  I am assuming I will need to add 6 separate object translations for the "old" server based on TCP port, and 1 object translation for the "new" server, correct?

OK, so I beleive I've truncated this down to what you need in order to give me a hand.  Remember that I must configure this using ADSM for screenshot purposes.  There is currently a temporary static one-to-one NAT in place for NCAFTP01 until we resolve the outbound issue, but I realize this must be removed to properly test.  I'll explain the desired topology below the config.:

Coming from the outside to public IP 1.1.1.5, we want ports 80, 443, 8080, 8500, 21, and 53 to translate to NCAFTP01/ 172.16.10.10.  We want traffic sent to 1.1.1.5 on "AS2" (tcp port 8800) to translate to NCADMZ02/172.16.10.11.
This part is functional, as you instructed above, I simply needed to create individual PAT statements.
My current issue lies in the outbound translation.  When we send a request out from NCAFTP01/ 172.16.10.10 on any port, we want it to translate to a public IP of 1.1.1.5.  When we send a request out from NCADMZ02/172.16.10.11, we also want it to translate to 1.1.1.5.  So in effect, we want it to NAT both devices outbound to the same public IP, but use PAT inbound.  These are the only two devices in our DMZ, so if I can simply translate all traffic from the DMZ network outbound to 1.1.1.5, I feel it would be the simplest solution.  My question is if we do this, when a request comes inbound from the outside, would the translation fall over to PAT?
This comes about because the client on the outside requires us to use a specific IP to connect to thier EDI server on port 5080.

  • Implementing "object-group service"

Running 8.2(3) on an ASA 5510
I have created the two following object groups.
    object-group service gatewayTCP tcp
    port-object eq 88
    port-object eq 135
    port-object eq 445
    port-object eq ldaps
    port-object eq 3268
    port-object eq 3269
    object-group service gatewayTCP-UDP tcp-udp
    port-object eq domain
    port-object eq 389
    port-object eq 464
    port-object range 49152 65535
I have run into an issue with "domain" working in the tcp-udp type. The following access-list does not work without explicitly calling out "domain" for both TCP and UDP. Everywhere I looked I appear to be doing it right so what am I missing. Does "permit tcp" need to be "permit ip" to cover both tcp and udp? I found one article with someone suggestiong just make it "permit tcp" and it will work. Not in a position to test at the moment so figured I'd ask here. Want to be sure I'm not getting bit anywhere else related to these object groups in case I am not implementing them correctly?
access-list dmzAccess extended permit tcp host 172.26.11.10 host 10.16.11.203 object-group gatewayTCP
    access-list dmzAccess extended permit tcp host 172.26.11.10 host 10.16.11.203 object-group gatewayTCP-UDP
Is this a bug with service object groups? Is there some place I need to enable this feature?

    Hi,
Have you tried configuring it like this
    object-group service GATEWAY-SERVICES
    service-object tcp eq 88
    service-object tcp eq 135
    service-object tcp eq 445
    service-object tcp eq ldaps
    service-object tcp eq 3268
    service-object tcp eq 3269
    service-object tcp eq 53
    service-object udp eq 53
    service-object tcp eq 389
    service-object udp eq 389
    service-object tcp eq 464
    service-object udp eq 464
    service-object tcp range 49152 65535
    service-object udp eq 49152 65535
    access-list dmzAccess permit object-group GATEWAY-SERVICES host 172.26.11.10 host 10.16.11.203
I am not sure if it was only after software 8.3+ that the command under the actual "object-group" was of format "service-object tcp source" / "service-object tcp destination" (or the same for UDP)

  • ASA 5510 'bounces' UDP packets. Why?

Hi. I hope to find someone who can shed a light on something that is bugging me for days now. We have an ASA (5510, running 7.2(2)) to connect our subnets to the backbone of the ISP. I received complaints about one specific connection, which I'll "draw" here:
    [ remote host 192.87.x.y (A) ] -- {"Internet"} -- [ Telecity Router ] -- [ Our ASA ] -- [ switch ] -- [ fibre ] -- [ switch ] -- [ our host 82.199.c.d (B) ]
What happens is the following: I can successfully ping from A to B and back. I can also traceroute (UDP) from A to B and back. But a specific UDP packet sent by A (port 9001) to B (port 5432) is causing a problem. "Our ASA" does not route the packet to the correct interface, but sends it back to the Telecity router instead. Which in turn sends it back to "Our ASA" (since it is destined for our subnet). This goes back and forth for 60 times and then the TTL is expired.
I have no idear what is happening here. The access-lists are correctly configured (as far as I know), but even if they weren't I would expect the packets to get dropped rather than put back on the sending interface. This packet is bounced (on ethernetlevel, the IP part remains the same apart from the TTL) to the sending router.
Any pointers as to where to look for what is causing this and how to investigate this further are highly appreciated.
    Frank

Hi Frederico. Of course I tried the packet tracer as one of the first tools :-). It showed a complete path (I used ASDM). Now I retried it (via the CLI) and something strange happens. This is a packet trace A to B with udp from port 9001 to 5431 (not 5432):
    Phase: 1
Type: FLOW-LOOKUP / ALLOW / Found no matching flow, creating a new flow
    Phase: 2

                                                    access-list my_backbone_access_in extended permit ip any my_DMZ 255.255.255.240
    Phase: 4
    Type: IP-OPTIONS / ALLOW
    Phase: 5
    Type: ACCESS-LIST / ALLOW / access-group my_DMZ_access_out out interface my_DMZ
                                                    access-list my_DMZ_access_out extended permit ip any object-group host_group
                                                    object-group network host_group

    Phase: 8
    Type: ROUTE-LOOKUP / ALLOW / found next-hop myHost using egress ifc my_DMZ
                                                        adjacency Active
                                                        next-hop mac address 00bb.ccdd.eeff hits 1
    Result:
    input-interface:   my_backbone / input-status: up / input-line-status: up
    output-interface: my_DMZ / output-status: up / output-line-status: up
    Action: allow
As you can see it is a complete path. But this is what happens if I try it for A/9001 to B/5432:
    Phase: 1
Type: FLOW-LOOKUP / ALLOW / Found flow with id 12, using existing flow
    Module information for forward flow: snp_fp_inspect_ip_options, snp_fp_adjacency, snp_fp_fragment, snp_ifc_stat
    Module information for reverse flow: snp_fp_inspect_ip_options, snp_fp_adjacency, snp_fp_fragment, snp_ifc_stat
    Result:
    input-interface: my_backbone / input-status: up / input-line-status: up / Action: allow
Apparently the packet is send into an existing flow (is there a command to see what this flow is?) and that is where it ends. Now I need to find out why this is happening... This firewall has been reloaded a few times, but that did not solve the problem. Any pointers are highly appreciated as was this hint.

  • ASA 5510 - Setting up ACL to permit access only to the Nat'ed subnet

    Hi,
I experiencing an issue in setting up an ACL on my ASA 5510 to permit access only to the Nat subnet from inside to the outside interface. This firewall is setup for the DR solution in the production network. I am applying following acl in the inbound direction on the inside interface.
    permit ip any "Nat_subnet"
After appliying this acl to inside interface I observed that I can ping to the destinations in NAT'ed subnet but unable to ssh to the servers. Following is the summary of my configuration. I would appreciate if someone please advice to resolve this issue.

    Hi,
As I mentioned even though you NAT the address from outside to inside you will have to use the REAL IP ADDRESSES in the access-list statements
Your hosts on inside will still be connecting to the NAT IP address of the hosts on outside BUT the ASA needs the ACL statements with the NATed hosts original IP addresses
Let me give an simple example
    object network STATIC
    host 10.10.10.10
    nat (outside,inside) static 192.168.10.10
    access-list INSIDE-IN permit ip any host 10.10.10.10
    or
access-list INSIDE-IN permit ip any object STATIC

This definitely confuses me, because SITECORP has an inbound access-list of permit ip any any.
Can anyone suggest what I'm missing, how to go about making this work, or what more I might provide to troubleshoot?
    Regards,
      Phil

    Hello Phil,
That is correct no matter what ACE (access-list entries) you have configured on one interface, if that interface wants to talk to another one with the same security level, the connection would not be allowed (Asa/Pix speaking)
But you do not have to change the Security level, of course that is one work-around but again the solution is :
    -     same-security-traffic permit inter-interface
Please mark the question as answered for future queries regarding the same issue unless you have any other question, I would be more than glad to help.
    Regards,
    Julio
