ASA-SSC-AIP-5 Analysis Engine Not Responding
Every couple of days I have been noticing that the IPS is in bypass mode and the Analysis Engine Status is often shown as not responding or is still loading something, and naturally, the CPU is pegged at 100%... so I have been reloading the IPS when this happens.
2 Questions:
Any general pointers of what often causes this, or things that I should look for when this is happening? I know I did not give enough details for specific answers, but I am just looking for general ideas to start with.
More importantly, what syslog messages might show up in the logs when the IPS goes into Bypass mode? I'd like to setup a notification for these syslog messages so that I can troubleshoot immediately and determine the cause.
IPS Version 6.2(2)E4
Signature Version 559.0
Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance Software Version 8.3(2)13
Thanks.
I would suggest that you upgrade the AIP-5 software to the latest version: 6.2.3(E4).
Here is the release notes where a number of memory related bugs have been resolved:
http://www.cisco.com/web/software/282549758/38029/IPS-6_2-3-E4_readme.txt
You might also want to check if the AIP-5 module is overloaded with traffic, which can cause that issue.

Analysis Engine Not running for IPS in AIPSSM Module
Hi all,
The Analysis Engine is not running for IPS module in AIPSSM Module. Please let me know how can i resolve this issue and get the analysis engine of IPS to running status.
Regards
KiranHi Kiran,
Ideally, what you can do is to remove the configuration on the ASA that sends traffic to IPS.
The crash in sensorapp or analysis engine might be traffic, configuration related.
We can try to reboot the IPS with no load on it by stopping sending traffic to it.
You can remove the IPS policy from the ASA configuration.
http://tools.cisco.com/squish/2f7A3
What this will do is stop ASA from sending any traffic to IPS.
Now do the hw-module module 1 reset command.
See if the IPS module comes back up.
If that also fails, then you can re-image the module.
This will however erase the configuration on the module.
The re-image procedure for SSM module:
http://tools.cisco.com/squish/ee66a
Hope this helps.

Snmpwalk crashes ASA-SSC-AIP-5!?!?
Setting up some snmp monitoring and as I am poking around to figure out what exactly I'd like to get, I run the following commands from my Debian based monitoring host:
snmpwalk -v 2c -c Community_String AIP_IPADDRESS
snmpwalk -v 1 -c Community_String AIP_IPADDRESS
While running either of these commands it begins to spit out OID information and then each time it ends with these two lines:
IF-MIB::ifSpecific.5 = OID: SNMPv2-SMI::zeroDotZero
Timeout: No Response from AIP_IPADDRESS
And at that moment, the magic happens; the module no longer responds, pings time-out, and the ASA5505 needs to be physically power cycled for everything to come back up normally.
ASA syslog reports:
May 9 10:34:15 ASA_IP May 09 2011 10:34:15 HOSTNAME : %ASA-1-505005: Module in slot 1 is initializing control communication. Please wait...
May 9 10:34:25 ASA_IP May 09 2011 10:34:25 HOSTNAME : %ASA-1-323001: Module in slot 1 experienced a control channel communication failure.
May 9 10:34:28 ASA_IP May 09 2011 10:34:28 HOSTNAME : %ASA-1-505005: Module in slot 1 is initializing control communication. Please wait...
May 9 10:34:38 ASA_IP May 09 2011 10:34:38 HOSTNAME : %ASA-1-323001: Module in slot 1 experienced a control channel communication failure.
(as you can see, these pairs are 10 seconds apart until the ASA is rebooted)
Is this expected behavior or otherwise already documented?
Let me add that this is not happening for the ASA or any other snmp devices.
As one could imagine -- this is driving me nuts.Is this what you are looking for? I hadn't power cycled the ASA since yesterday, so if that is going to make a difference I can re-post this or open a TAC case.
Thanks.

ASA5505 un-responsive after installing ASA-SSC-AIP-5 IPS module
Hello,
Can anyone help?
I have a pair of ASA 5505 firewalls in a failover configuration. Everything works correctly until I install the IPS module into the secondary firewall. When install I can no longer ping the firewall from the inside network. We do not have an external network set up at present.
I have connected to the secondary firewall via the console. Issues the command "session 1" and can then get to the IPS. I have set the IPS hostname and given it an address on the interal network. I have set the ACL on the IPS to permit the inside range.
The results are that we are unable to reach the ASA or the IPS on the internal range. The primary firewall is no longer able to ping the inside address of the secondary firewall. As soon as I remove the IPS modue all returns to normal. Im not sure what would be causing this. If anyone can tell me where they think I went wrong that would be great.
ThanksThis sounds like a IP issue some where on the ASA, or IPS module. Did you run a capture on the ASA, and the IPS module to see if the respones are arriveing? On the issue, you can use the "capture interface " on the ASA, and the "packet display expression host ". This will help you determin if there is a ARP, or some other IP related issue on the network.
I hope this helps,

When i do "sh ver" over an IDS 4250XL 5.1(1)S243.0 it appears:
AnalysisEngine 2006_Feb_08_13.09 (Release) 2006-02-08T13:52:38-0600 NotRunning
What does it imply? How can i start it?
Thanks,If the ananlysis engine is not running, your sensor is not analyzing dumped traffic (and is therefore useless).... To get it started, follow the steps below.
1. Create a service account user in CLI or IDM
2. Login using service account in CLI
3. Switch to root user by typing su and service account pwd
4. Type the following command at bash-2.05b# prompt: /etc/init.d/cids restart
5. To check if the sensor is "up" again, type su cisco. Then do a show version.
6. If you still experience issues, exit back to the service account and type reboot.
If the helps, please rate me..
Cheers,

Hi,
According to 'List of Bugs Fixed in 11.1.1.6' by Oracle, Bug # 13111799 is fixed.
And as per the 'Oracle Support Document' this bug is fixed in product version 11.1.1.7.0
Now, since am getting the same error message even after upgrading to OBIEE 11.1.1.6
Which one of these documents to be believed?
Regards,
JitendraI'm also having the same issue.
After I restarted OBIEE services, evertyhing is fine. I think that is problem with presentation service which can't generate graphics objects.
I will analyze this problem now and reply to this thread if I will have some new informations.

Application showing failed .
Can any body help me on this,.We have had this issue in the past with our sensors and the only way that we were able to clear it was with a reboot of the sensor. If you decide to reboot then you should probably do a "show tech" before the reboot and open a case with support to see what the root cause of the issue was.

4215 IPS 5.x analysis engine woes
I've got about 20 4215's that i'm upgrading from 4.1 to 5.x
Like everyone else I've had nothing but problems with the 5.1x (analysis engine just stops running)
I've tried upgrading using a brand new image, using both the 5.0(1) and 5.0(2) images. However, with both of those I get the following errors:

Error: editConfigDeltaAnalysisEngine : Analysis Engine is busy
What's the deal with this? It sometimes takes several resets just to work. Sometimes I have to wait 10 minutes. Sometimes it just doesn't work at all. I can't even upgrade to 5.0(6) or anything because, you guessed it, my analysis engine is busy.
Does it normally take that long for it to allow me to make changes? Anybody have any ideas? After a re-image there will always be a period of time when the Analysis Engine is busy.
The Analysis Engine can take up to about 30 minutes on a low end sensor like the IDS-4215 to completely initialize itself.
It takes all of the regular expression signatures and will compile the regular expressions together into what you can consider one giant regular expression. It was what we call a regular expression cache file.
The creation of the regular expression cache file was speeded up as part of a bug fix in the 5.0(6) Service Pack.
So what to do:
After you do a re-image of the sensor just let it sit for 20 to 30 minutes. Then execute "iplog-status". If it tells you analaysisEngine is busy then keep waiting. It is tells you No Ip Logs are available then it is ready to go. (Any other command that queries the AnalysisEngine would work as well) This way you can also check the Analysis Engine status before going through and typing up all of the config changes.
Resetting the sensor while the Analsysis Engine is busy just prolongs the initialization, the Analysis Engine will have to redo some of the intialization.
My recommendation for versions right now is to load 5.0(1) or 5.0(2) base image. Wait for 20 to 30 minutes till Analysis Engine is responding, then load the 5.0(6) Service Pack. When you load the 5.0(6) Service Pack there will once again be a big jump in signatures so there will be another initialization period.
Once that initialization is done, then load the latest Signature Update.
As for version 5.1(1) there are some known issues that cause Analysis Engine to stop Running. Don't confuse these bugs with the standard initialization time for Analysis Engine. Analysis Engine veing busy is normal and expected after a re-image or upgrade, an Analysis Engine "Not Running" is a bug.
If you are seeing "Not Running" for Analysis Engine when executing "show version" then please contact the TAC. There is a engineering patch for some of these issues, but it does requiring running special engineering builds that are in the process of going through testing.
Cisco is working on these issues and will be releasing an official update as soon as the fixes have been fully tested at Cisco.
Until those 5.1(1) issues are addressed, your options would be to contact the TAC and possibly obtain the special engineering build, or downgrade to the 5.0(6) version as mentioned above. -

Hi,
I ran a bubble chart and I am getting following error.
Graphing engine is not responding.
A fatal error occurred while processing the request. The server responded with: com.siebel.analytics.utils.InputStreamWithLimit$ReadOverTheLimitException.
Nothing much on support site as well. Any help is appreciated.
ThanksHow big is the data in this chart .?
Try setting this in the instanceconfig.xml (instances/instance1/config/OraclePresentationServer/instanceconfig.xml ) with below tags
<Views>
<Charts>
<JavaHostReadLimitInKB>6144</JavaHostReadLimitInKB>
</Charts>
</Views>
refer to : http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E14571_01/bi.1111/e16452/apndx_ui_chngs.htm
Let us know the updates. Mark if helps.
