ASCII Codes in WORD for Mac

When writing WORD documents on a PC, I am a frequent user of mathematical symbols:  § (alt 21), ½ (alt 171), α (alt 224), ß (alt 225), π (alt 227), Σ (alt 228), σ (alt 229), µ (alt 230), τ (alt 231), Θ (alt 233), Ω (alt 234), δ (alt 235), φ (alt 237), ε (alt 238), ± (alt 241), ≥ (alt 242), ≤ (alt 243), ÷ (alt 246), ≈ (alt 247), ° (alt 248), ∙ (alt 249).  These symbols are easy to insert into a document on a PC with a numeric key pad; all the user needs to do is press the [ALT] key and key in the two or three digit numeric code.
I am well aware of the onerous method of inserting these characters into a WORD document by navigating through multiple menus and searching for the symbol needed.  I am looking for a quick and simple way for inserting these ASCII characters (like the PC method of pressing [ALT] and then keying a three digit number code into the keypad).   Is there a short cut in WORD for Mac for inserting the ASCII characters as described above?  I am new to Mac and am hoping there is an efficient shortcut for inserting these ASCII symbols.

Use the keyboard viewer (just once, as instructed here):
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13746
Depress the "Option" key while the keyboard viewer is visible, and you will see the keyboard translation for many of the symbols you are looking for.  For example, a "Pi" symbol can be generated by clicking Option-p.

  • Accented characters in Word for Mac: Option-i doesn't work

I am trying to type an accented character (e.g., a circumflex over a letter). Everything I find online says type and hold "OPTION-i", release, then type the letter, but it doesn't work. Instead I get the accent over empty space, next to the letter. This is MS Word for Mac 2008 software on a MacBook Pro. Any ideas?

    > the problem is that I'm trying to put a "hat" over a consonant
I suspect you'll find that, the more precise and specific your question, the more greater the likelihood of getting a speedy and helpful answer.
    > Looks like the software only allows the circumflex over vowels.
    > Option-i does work on my computer for vowels. (Built-in
    > keyboard).
Nonsense. Nothing to do with your keyboard. Btw, you still haven't told us what character you're trying to insert.
    > I guess I will have to use the Equation Editor.
That's an option, but not the only one. Just for the sake of argument, let's assume it's p-hat (not the party hat, but the symbol for sample proportion).
    (1) Specifically in Word, you can use fields (overstrike). Go to Insert > Field… > Equations and Formulas > Eq; then type
    EQ \O (p,^)
and confirm. (Note that "EQ" will be inserted by Word automatically, you don't need to type it again.)
Once you get the hang of it, you won't need to insert it using menu & submenu commands, but by typing and applying styles.
    (2) The right way is Unicode. Currently, Unicode defines >100k codepoints, so, for obvious reasons, it's neither necessary nor practical for most keyboard layouts to be able to access anything but a small subset. You can enter Unicode characters using Character Viewer (aka Special Characters), or, more efficiently, using the Unicode Hex Input keyboard layout.
If the character is already defined as such in Unicode, eg, for all (upside down A), then hold down Option and type its Unicode hex code, ie 2200 -- ∀. However, p-hat isn't defined as such, so it must be entered as a combining character sequence. The sequence is ((Latin small letter p) + (combining circumflex accent)), or (p + 0302) -- p̂.
Unfortunately, all is not sweetness and light. Although this is how it should be done, the display may disappoint. Questions 12b and 12c in the respective Unicode FAQ explain what happens and why.

  • I'm using Word for Mac. Though there are various instructions on the Internet for modifying the templates, none make sense to me. They instruct to do something I can't follow. I change a template but can't save it to the template folder.

    What the ****.
OK, I try to change a template using Word for Mac version 14.3.4 2011 edition.
I make a change to the template but am unable to save the darned thing to the template folder; it asks for a file name like it's a new document. I want to change the blasted template but if I can't save it as a modified template, I've accomplished nothing.
    Does anyone have a solution?
    Thanks

If anyone has anyideas of what is going on or could even help me thank you.

    Glad that helped.
As time goes by (months or years), keep your eyes on how long Microsoft continues to support Office 2011 for Mac.  Eventually you should consider Office 365 or Apple's Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.

  • Issues with Microsoft Word for mac closing when I try to open old or newly downloaded documents

When I download a document from my professor, or try to open an older document, my word automatically quits. If it's already closed and I try to open a document, it will show the dot at the bottom of the icon that it's loading to open but it quickly disappears and quits itself. Is anyone else experiencing this issue or know what I can do to fix it? Thanks.

  • Users of Word for Mac:  Help on Two Issues!!

I downloaded some fonts I wanted to use in my Word for Mac document. Download went fine and the fonts are happily nestled in the Fonts folder. However, when I open Word, they do not appear on the Font listing. Any thoughts as to how to get them over so I can use them?
Also, I wanted to use the Fonts to create a logo that--ideally--would be a half circle of text over the design. Simple enough, I thought: just go into Toolbox and pull down the styles (like you can in Windows) and choose the style I want.
No such luck (we are dealing with a Mac here so everything is special) but suddenly a "special styles" toolbox appeared with exactly what I wanted--the ability to format a font to a 180' half circle, mirror image text and some other stuff that seemed interesting!
When I went back to the document to format the text the "special styles" toolbox disappeared, never to be found again. Sigh...
Any ideas? Oh, yes, there is a 180' in "Word Art" but I can't get the downloaded fonts into there, so that isn't really a solution.

Okay, here are the details: Word for Mac 2008 Ver. 12.2.8
Yes, I did post to the MS Forums.
Still no answer from either MS or MAC forums.
Sorry, but this doesn't strike me at that tough a question, hence the *****. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who uses Word for Mac and I'm equally sure I'm not the first one to download a font that didn't load into Word for Mac. The answer is out there somewhere....

  • How can I send emails to a list of email addresses using mail merge  feature in Microsoft Word for Mac? It would work with the power pc but not with macbook Air

I want to send an email and personalize it to several contacts. I could always do it with my old Power PC using Microsoft Office Word for Mac but cannot access my emailoption when I use the Macbook Air. Anyone have a solution??

No way for us to know for sure (without similar product/issues) but the
HP Support site suggests that with the current Mavericks OS X 10.9.x
their drivers should be available through Apple Software Updates:
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Mac-Printing-and-Scanning/HP-Product-Support-using- Apple-Software-Updates-for-new-OS-X/td-p/3086229
However that may be limited to certain models of printers or scanners that
already had been known to be working under OS X as of that date in a
prior OS X (such as 10.8.5, 10.7.5, 10.6.8, etc) with earlier product support.
•Drivers and Downloads for Printers, Scanners, & More - HP Support:
    http://www8.hp.com/us/en/drivers.html
A link to Mac OS X Support's List Printer & Scanner software (HP+ Other)
•OS X: Printer and scanner software available for download
    HP Officejet t65 All-in-One Printer
{According to this page, your old printer has only Windows & Linux drivers
but you may or may not look into third-party driver support through such
    sites as Gimp; though unlikely to be available with Mavericks, or Yosemite}
    •HP Support Forum - Home:
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/psg/?lang=en&cc=us
You may be able to get a deal on a new printer as they are rapidly obsoleted.
PS: edit to add... there was a Gutenprint driver reference for T65 Printer here:
Mac OS X 10.5: Included printer drivers
Yet a driver for ancient Leopard 10.5.x may not be suitable for Mavericks 10.9.x
but the Gutenprint lead may be helpful to locate whatever may exist; or not.

  • How can I create a new folder in Word for Mac ?

How can I create a new folder in Word for Mac?

You don't do this in Word. You do it in the OS X Finder.
All you need do in Word is open the file, then select Save As from Word's File menu. Change the destination to your new folder then click on the Save button.
The Finder method is much faster if you have a number of files you want to move. Just remember that to open those moved files in Word, you will have to change the directory from which you will open those files.

No.  Create a playlist that you then sync to your iPod, and choose whatever view you wish of the playlist within iTunes.

  • Can you open with Pages documents that were created in a 2004 version of Microsoft word for Mac?

Can you open in Pages documents that were created in a 2004 version of Microsoft Word for Mac?

Pages '09 will open .doc files from Word 2004. The Mac OS is not what is in question. Pages '09 opens Word 2004 documents and if the same version of Pages will run in Lion and in Mountain Lion ..... Thats all that matters.
I trust you were using MS Office 2004 and would now like to buy Pages?

  • Does anyone know why the word count in Word for Mac changes so drastically? In one document it goes up and down by several hundred at a time when I have done nothing but scroll through the document.

I am new to the wonderful world of Mac and all of my documents were created in MS Word on my old laptop. I noticed that the word counts were slightly different when I opened the documents in Word for Mac, but then I noticed that they changed drastically. For intance, I opened a document today and after the initial period where the word count shifts, it seemed to settle on 13,171. I left the document for a while to work on some other things and when I came back the word count had changed to 11,677. I didn't do anything to the document. Word counts are important to me since I need at least 60,000 for my PhD Dissertation. Which word count should I trust?

Since Word is a Microsoft product, you should probably post your question on the Microsoft Mac forums:

  • Word for Mac no longer working since updating

Since updating to lion my Word for Mac won't open

You're welcome. You might want to check for other PPC apps to avoid being caught off guard again. If you go to the Apple Menu and choose About This a Mac, then click more info, then a System Report, and finally Applications (or Software I can't remember) you can see how each application is coded. Anything that has PPC next to the mane will no longer work.
