Ask Apple for better iPhoto (Aperture) Library sharing!

*Some Background...*
My wife and I each have our own Mac and iPhone and we share a digital camera. Between the three camera devices we snap a lot of photos and we want easy access (over the network!) to each other's photos so we can both maintain a shared library. iPhoto 8.1.2 (iLife '09) allows some rudimentary sharing, but it's very basic and not centralized. So, all photos are accessible only when both Macs are on the network and iPhoto is running on each. If you search for "iPhoto sharing" in the forums or Google you'll see a LOT of people have the same needs.
http://www.google.com/search?q=iphoto+sharing
*My Humble Suggestion...*
How do I think iPhoto should work? You should have an option of establishing a "Master iPhoto Library". Either locally to share among users of the same computer or on the network for users to share between multiple computers. Whatever photos are added to a user's iPhoto Library may optionally be merged into the Master Library for all to see/edit etc. If the user wants they can move them to the Master or copy them (to retain their own version for editing as they see fit). They may also copy from the Master to their local library if they have a MacBook and want to take them on the go...
If Apple truly wants to provide a digital "hub" for it's users, they must provide this sort of sharing for their services. Families share contacts, photos, calendars, movies and music. This concept should be applied to iTunes, Address Book, iCal, Aperture etc.
+If you agree with this or have any of your own ideas please post here and PLEASE let Apple know+ ==> http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html

By all means make a feature request. Absolutely nothing will change unless you do.
But some points to ponder:
As I often point out when this one comes up, averaged out of the cost of iLife, iPhoto is a $16 application. For that you get a lot - and with a bit of work, you can even do much of what you want to do - but you don't get everything.
There are apps that will do as you want. They start around the $200 mark.
As to specifics:
You should have an option of establishing a "Master iPhoto Library".
Easily done.
Either locally to share among users of the same computer
Put it in the Users/Shared Folder.
or on the network for users to share between multiple computers
Go out an buy a NAS device. Put the iPhoto Library on a disk image formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) stored on the NAS. On a NAS it will not require another computer to be available. You might even be able to put in an USB HD attached to an Airport device.
Whatever photos are added to a user's iPhoto Library may optionally be merged into the Master Library for all to see/edit etc.
You can do this - along with all versions, metadata etc - with iPhoto Library Manager.
If the user wants they can move them to the Master or copy them (to retain their own version for editing as they see fit).
You can do that with either iPhoto Library Manager or basic iPhoto Sharing.
They may also copy from the Master to their local library if they have a MacBook and want to take them on the go...
Ditto.

TD
ps. Some of these links are well out of date. For instance, with iPhoto 09 there is no longer a need to manipulate ACLS to share Libraries. One of those links is labelled "10.4 only" and you need a minimum of 10.5.6 for iPhoto 09.

  • "Move" option grayed out for Import to Aperture Library?

I tried to import photos from an external hard drive and "Store Files in the Aperture Library," but the options to Move or Copy the photos were grayed out and unavailable. If I chose to import to the Pictures folder, the options were available. But both "in the Aperture Library" and "in their Current Location" (which makes sense) were unavailable.
Any idea why? The manual is no help.

I think you will find that the only place you are meant to have the option of "Move" vs "Copy" is in the import to either "Pictures" or "Choose" options. Reading through the manual the only time these teo options are mentioned is when discussing these two import to location choices. The default for "In the Aperture Library" is that they are copied. This is handy in that you have a copy of the files that you are able to backup/archive refer to if something goes awry during the import process, yes it can happen.

  • Problem syncing photos to iPad from Aperture with a merged iPhoto/Aperture library

I recently 'upgraded' to us Aperture instead of iPhoto. One of the features of this was that I could continue to use the old iPhoto library in Aperture, and it automatically configures to Aperture settings - and it works great in Aperture.
The problem is that when I come to sync photos to my ipad, I have the drop down options for iPhoto and Aperture. The Aperture option shows zero photos, and the iPhoto option shows all the complete list of all my photo event/projects (from both my iPhoto days, and the more recent stuff in Aperture); but anything that I have created since moving to Aperture is greyed out and not accessible.
Any clues as to how I can sync the new photos as well as the old ones?
    Thanks

Have you enabled the sharing and creation of previews in Aperture? That is one big difference between Aperture and iPhoto - in iPhoto it is impossible to disable previews, but in Aperture you can create previews selectively, see: Working with Preview Images
Check Aperture's Preferences > Previews settings for "New Projects automatically create Previews".
Then select the images with missing previews in Aperture in the Browser and use the command "Photos > Update previews".
If that is not the problem, the iPod Photo Cache or the Aperture library may need repairing or rebuilding, see these documents on how to repair the Aperture Library:
Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library
iTunes: Understanding the iPod Photo Cache folder
First try, if a simple repair of the Aperture library will suffice, then delete the iPod photo cache folder. Make sure, that the backup of your Aperture library is current, before try any of this.

  • After migrating from iPhoto: Aperture library 81GB and iPhoto Library 17GB

I Have ~10K images almost all .jpgs. I just completed the "rebuild from masters" command after experimenting with Aperture for a while. I was surprised to find that my Aperture Library was 81GB and my remaining iPhoto library was 17GB. First of all I selected "move" from the "rebuild from masters" command so I thought my iPhoto Library would just disappear. When I open iPhoto all my pictures are still there. So why the large library size difference?
    -thanks

How long since, you installed Aperture 3? You may need to leave the machine running for quite a while before things start to settle down. Sounds like you may be short of RAM and or a library with a lot of faces. Allan

  • IPhoto Aperture library intergration.

Is there a way so that you have 1 libary for both Aperture and iphoto?
So that if I import in iPhoto Aperture updates, and vica versa.
Cause if I import iPhoto into Aperture, you can have the masters stored in iPhoto, but when you add photos to iPhoto Aperture needs to reimport and it reimports ALL the pictures... So I have doubles and have to tripple sort.
So is there a way that the libarys can be universal?

You can share the images, by pointing both at the same reference files (thus you must use referenced files in Aperture).
You cannot share adjustments between the two programs -- their libraries are separate. And Aperture includes a lot of additional functionality that iPhoto doesn't have.
For more information on how to share libraries, view Joe Schorr's podcast on it (I linked to it in this forum a couple days ago)... and have a search of this forum, as this has been asked probably 20 times. Search works quite well

  • IPhoto '08: library-sharing woes, library size = zero

    Greetings everyone,
Just got a new Aluminum iMac, running 10.5 and iPhoto 08, and I am trying to share a 5GB iPhoto library among several users.
I have placed the library in a shared folder that all users have access to. I launched iPhoto and accessed the library as "User 1", and it worked fine: all photos were displayed, all events/rating/etc. were intact.
However, all other users are unable to access this library. I quit iPhoto, logged in as "User 2", and launched iPhoto with option key down to select a library on startup. iPhoto can see the directory, but the library is grayed out. Also, if I Get Info on this library while logged in as "User 2", it says *the file size is Zero K* (Get Info says file size = 5GB when logged in as User 1). Same thing happens for all other users on this box.
*Anyone have any idea how to get other users to be able to access this library* and/or why this library is showing up as Zero K for all users except the first one?
    Thanks in advance!
    sno-man

    sno-man:
If you manually reset the ownership and permissions of the library located in the Shared folder any new file or file that gets edited by a second user will have that 2nd Users ownership and preferences. It's a difficult situation.
The best way to share a working/editing library between multiple users on the same or multiple Macs is to put the library on an external FW hard disk whose ownership is set to be ignored .
A second way is to create a disk image large enough to hold the library and some room for expansion, put it in the shared folder, put the library in it and have it set in each users login items to be mounted automatically when they log in. The disk image will have ownership turned off and all users can open and edit within the library, but not at the same time.
Also I recommend you follow the tip at the end of my signature as being on a disk image there could be an interruption while a user was using the library and writing to the library's database file. If that happens that file will be damaged and you'll lose all of your organizational effort, i.e. keywords, books, albums, slideshows. The tip describes how to recover easily from such an event.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • HT4314 My Game Center App support button sends me to the website of the developer, and they say to ask Apple for help. It's a cycle I can't break. I just want to fix my game!

I downloaded the Sims Freeplay app some time ago and it's been smooth sailing.
I'm a bit of an achievement hunter when I play my games, so I bought a rather expensive home to earn one particular achievement.
My "Pro Skater Deam Pad" was built, but the achievement was never awarded. Odd. So I restarted my iPad and thus the game. Still nothing.
I've had the house for a few days now and I still haven't been awarded an achievement, so I went to the App Store and clicked App Support.
It sent me to the EA games homepage, and after scouring the help center with no luck, I was finally pushed into making an account so I could ask my question.
Lo and behold, the EA games cannot access the Game Center or the App Store or anything else like that, and sent me back to Apple.
    Repeat the cycle here.
So here's my question and I'd love some answers ::
"What do I need to do to fix the glitch? The app is up to date and is otherwise running perfectly fine."

I doubt this warranty is still being honoured, since there was a 2 year time limit.
But just to be sure you could contact Apple directly:

    Good luck.

  • We have a 4 year old iMac 24 inch.  My hard drive died and we have a new hard drive now, but all that the fixit shop put on it was the Snow Leopard OS;  can I ask Apple for a download of our other many software programs to reload them?  Does it cost to do

We have a 4 year old iMac 24 inch.  The hard drive died and we had a new hard drive installed.  They only installed the Snow Leopard OS on it, and there were many software programs that came with the iMac originally.. now missing.  Does anyone know whether Apple will resupply these?  I do have an Apple installation disc but have upgraded from the original Leopard to Snow Leopard... so the OS is not quite the same.  Ideas?  Thanks!

No bootable bakup/clone or Time Machine backup? No initial install discs? If no to both of those, call 1-800-MY-APPLE and request replacement discs for that machine. They're available for a nominal S&H charge.

  • Dissatisfaction with Samsung has led me to ask Apple for Assistance with iPad for Husband with MS

My husband suffers from Multiple Sclerosis and I am just trying to find information on any discounts or programs that would allow him to get an iPad2 w/ wi-fi and 3G.  He currently has a Samsung Galaxy Tab that we paid for from our funds however, the time has come and it has issues and we are receiving no support from Samsung nor Verizon. Nothing. Verizon even sold us a charger that is not compatible with the Tab. Our Verizon store is not friendly or helpful on most occasions. But that is not why I am here. My husbands MS impairs his sight (closeness/reading & Uhthoff's phenomenon), small motor skills, dexterity, and walking/balance.  He functions well enough to where he makes a commitment to working every day except when he is scheduled for infusions once per month at the hospital. So the best possible option for him now would be an Apple iPad. He has heavily relied on his other tablet, until now, to help him function daily at work and at home. However, our current budget will not allow us to make such a large purchase and payments do not seem to be an option at this time either. So if Community Affairs or a partnership with the MS Society or other group could offer a substantial discount to persons with disabilities that would be wonderful and we may be able to manage obtaining some remaining costs to complete the purchase. No, more than wonderful. At this point, I do not like him being without an assistive device. Watching him struggle to read or use maps breaks my heart and makes me worry of his safety.
Please contact me if anyone can be of any help.  I spent over 2 hours online last night looking for assistance and as you can tell I didn't find any. Maybe I will find some here.
Thank you in advance for reading, responding and caring.
    Lisa
P.S. - He was in the middle of a Audio Book about S. Jobs which he really enjoyed on long drives/trips to worksites. This has been a dissapointment not to be able to finish the book.  His audio books are one of his favorite things when he drives or rides in the car.  With his impaired sight, it opens a door he never new was there.

    BobTheFisherman:
Thank you for your response but the trouble we are having is the Samsung Galaxy we purchased for my husband is having major issues and is just out of warranty.  Both Verizon and Samsung are giving us a hard time trying to deal with any troubleshooting, replacement or any other help.  Like I said before Verizon even gave us a replacement charger that was the wrong charger which is useless to us.  It was recommended we look for an iPad/Apple product for it's reputation, reliability and numerous positive attributes that would assist my husband and his disability.
    Thanks again.

  • HT4859 I need help! I know longer have access to the email that I opened my icloud account with and I can't remember my password. I have tried asking Apple for help and no one has been able to! Any advice

I need help! I no longer have access to the email that I opened my icloud account with many years ago and I can't remember my password anyway! However it continues to backup all my stuff. But I have no access to go in and delete items or manage my account. The pop-ups now tell me that my account is full and it will no longer be able to backup items. I would like to go in and delete items that I do not need to make room, but I can't! I have personally gone into the Apple genius store and presented the problem as well as called Apple support and talked with a live person. And no one has been able to help me. I cannot believe that I have basically lost my iCloud accessibility? I have a lot of money vested in music and priceless pictures! Please can someone help me?

I don't know what you mean by "closed" - icloud accounts stay in existence even if you disconnect all devices from the account.  You can't delete them.
If you don't recall the ID or the password, and if the link above doesn't provide another way to get to the account, then you are out of luck.

  • OK to use Aperture to maintain iPhoto Referenced Library

I have Aperture and iPhoto. We are an OSX and Windows household. But thanks to the Windows 8 debacle, my wife (the diehard Windows user) has abandoned her PC with all regard to photos and videos (viewing, editing, sharing). Now, I use Aperture most of the time, but my wife uses iPhoto 100% of the time. I manage all the imports with Aperture. (I currently have one referenced library that I use in Aperture of all files and a second default iPhoto Library that is managed but only has post-2010 files in it. Both created in their respective programs, if that matters.)
Coincidentally, we are also at a point where we need to quit adding photos/videos to the PC or we'll exceed its backup capacity.
Now that she is using the iMac, I would like to get the Library organized and minimize my workflow and eliminate duplication. I do not have enough contiguous disk space for single managed aperture library. I have avoided proceeding because iPhoto and referenced files are not recommended by most of the experts here, for well founded reasons. However, now that both apps can use the same library, and Aperture handles referenced libraries so much better... why not go referenced now? I can leave the pre-2010 files on the PC, and keep all the post-2010 imports on the iMac, all in one Library. The fact that nobody is getting into the files on the PC virtually eliminates all the problems I've had in the past.
    Is there something I'm missing?
Thanks for any thoughts on this, or hidden gotchas.

No assuming that you have the latest version of both iPhoto and Aperture so there is total interoperability between them

  • How to prepare for iPhoto/Aperture shutdown?

I have almost 50K images in my iPhoto library. I also have Aperture, but really just purchased it to be able to manage libraries over multiple drives. What should I be doing to prepare for the iPhoto/Aperture sunset?
    Thanks

It's only late afternoon in our little clearing in the orchard.  We have about a year before sundown, and several months after that before darkness swallows our hole.
Sit tight for now.  Keep your database in good working order.  Rigorously edit your collection.
Apple will come out with a successor photo management application.  I call this PhotOSX.  We know nothing actionable about it.
There is little reason to do anything until you can see if PhotOSX meets your needs.  And no reason to hurry even once it is announced.
FWIW, I have several thousand hours invested in a complex workflow centered on Aperture.  I am considering "freezing" my system when the successor to Yosemite is released, so that I can continue to work with Aperture for a few more years after that.
This is discussed regularly.  Look for other threads here, and elsewhere.

  • Aperture previews/Can't see Aperture library in other apps.

This isn't really a new problem for me, but I decided to ask now to see if it can be fixed somehow. I use Aperture 3.4.5, OSX 10.8.4. The problem is that Aperture doesn't show up under the Media tab when in other apps. For instance, in Mail if I try to attach a picture. It shows iPhoto and Photobooth. But I get an error when I click on Aperture that tells me I need to turn on sharing to iLife in the preferences of Aperture. But this is turned on. Still no access to the Aperture library. Same thing in iTunes. Now, since my Aperture and iPhoto libraries are linked I can just choose the photos I want to attach from the iPhoto library. But I want to choose the Aperture library!!
But it won't let me. I cannot add projects/folders to my iPhone or iPad in iTunes either. I get the same turn on the sharing message. And I have this turned on.
I've seen a few other people with this problem in searches I have done but I have not seen any solutions...
    Help?!?

So your Aperture library is in fact a previous iPhoto library.
Correct. When I purchased Aperture, I imported from my iPhoto library. And I guess they are shared.
I am still not quite sure about the state of your iPhoto/Aperture library.  Depending on when you bought Aperture, you may have imported the iPhoto Library into a new Aperture Library; then you now have an Aperture library, or you may have simply opened the iPhot Library in Aperture, keeping it an iPhoto Library.  The Finder can show you what it is.
Select your library in the Finder and use the Finder command "Get Info ⌘I". The Info panel will show you the type of the library.
Disclose the "General" brick in the panel. The "Kind" will either show "iPhoto Library" or "Aperture Library".
Then disclose the  "Name & Extension" brick and look, if your library has a filename extension - aplibrary or photolibrary. Uncheck "Hide Extension" to see it.
If your library still is "Kind iPhoto Library", then you never imported your Library, you only used it in Aperture.
Or if you want to use iPhoto and Aperture with separate photo libraries, import your current library into a new Aperture library. Open your now empty Aperture Library in Aperture by double-clicking it. Then use the command "File > Import > Library" in Aperture and select your iPhoto library. This will import all events, albums, etc. into your empty Aperture Library  and craete a copy of the iPhoto library, but now it will have the kind "Aperture Library" and the Media Browser should show it in the Aperture section and not the iPhoto section. Only make sure, that you unhide all photos in iPhoto, before you do that. Aperture cannot unhide photos that have been hidden in iPhoto.
My question here is if I go into my new Aperture Library, and import from iPhoto again (and I guess make them not shared?) Will it then *copy* my iPhoto library, which is 240GB. Then I would have 2 240GB folders??
I appreciate the help so far. Right now I'm doing the generate preview thing again, which is taking awhile. But I'm guessing that since my iPhoto and Aperture libraries are linked and shared now this won't matter much. I will still only see iPhoto listed in the Media Browser..
Let's talk about that part of your question when we know for sure, if you already imported your iPhoto library or simply opened it in Aperture. If your library is an Aperture library with an imported iPhoto library inside there may be additional complications.

  • What's the best way to make my Aperture library more manageable?

I'm running the latest version of Aperture. My photo library has become quite large and it takes a long time to load. Any advice or opinions on how to make the library more manageable would be appreciated before I go ahead and mess it all up. Obviously, I have a lot of photos there that I never view but I don't really want to simply delete them.
    Thanks

    I have 192Gb of 999Gb left
    That should suffice.
I have now disabled FACES, XML and previews. I'll test this shortly to see if it helps. I'm not sure what difference this will make to other apps.
That will be important, when you want access the APerture library from other applications using te Media Browser or when you want to sync your images to your deviced usin iTunes. For images, that you want to use in the Media Browser you will need previews, or for browsing your aperture library in quick Preview mode. You can craete previews indivudally, if you do need them only for selected images. If you want to use the Media Browser with third party applications, however, you will also need the XML. See:
Aperture 3.5: Set "Share XML with other applications" to "Never" for better performance and faster quit times
Okay. I've closed Aperture and reopened it 4 times. It appears to go through this 'IMPORTING FROM iCloud November 2013' every time.
Either it takes a very long time, or there is an image or a video in your Photo Stream that cannot be imported, because it is incompatible or corrupted.
For iPhoto libraries it used to help, to remove the current "Importing" or "Auto Import" folder  from the library package. Try, if this will help for your Aperture library.
See this post by LarryHN how to do it:
TS3745 Re: iphoto library error message???
If you cannot get the import to stop this way, post back, Then you have to delete the photos from your Photo Stream or reset the Photo Stream.

  • IPhoto / Aperture Video Export - Permissions Issue?

    Hello all,
    Setup:
    iMac 3.4ghz i7 16GB RAM
    OSX 10.8.1
    iPhoto 9.3.2
    Aperture 3.3.2
I'm having an issue that's driving me nuts.  I'm not sure how to articulate this properly so I'll walk you through the issue.
User 1 shoots video on iPhone 4
User 1 plugs iPhone into iMac and imports files into iPhoto / Aperture Library
User 1 can play videos in iPhoto or Aperture without issue.
User 2 merges their iPhoto / Aperture Library with User 1's.  (File > Import to Library > Select User 1 Library)
Libraries merge with no problem except for videos.  Videos appear in User 1's Library with yellow "!" and cannot be played.  Thumbnails are black.
    Pictures merge perfectly without problems.
User 1 exports a video from iPhoto (File > Export)
    Kind = original
    Destination = desktop
Video successfully exports to desktop.  User 1 can play the video using quicktime.  Video appears on desktop with full thumbnail.
User 1 copies exported video to shared directory for User 2 to grab.  Appears identical as desktop file when viewed from User 1 account.
User 2 navigates to shared directory and can see file.  But no thumbnail.  Only a quicktime icon.
User 2 tries to launch video and receives the following error:  "The document “Name.MOV” could not be opened. An unknown error occurred (13)"
I cannot locate any documentation of this occurence anywhere.  My wife and I each have an account on the iMac.  She imported video of our recent vacation to iPhoto.  I also imported video from my phone and imported via iPhoto.  Actually, I use Aperture.  When she merges her library with mine, no problems.  Everything comes over nicely.  When I merge her library with mine, I get pictures but the videos don't come over properly.  I can see thumbnails or placeholders for them in my library, but I cannot play them.  Again, switch to her account and they play just fine.
I hypothesize that this is a permissions issue.  I noticed that when exporting video from her iPhoto the permission for the "everyone" account = "No Access".  I have also successfully played her exported video by changing "everyone" to "read only" and adding the "Admin" account and doing the same.  Once I do that, the quicktime icon changes to a thumbnail and I can play the video from my account.  I believe that whatever is causing this permissions issue is also preventing videos from being merged between the two libraries.
Now, the only difference between my account login and my wife's is that she does not have a password on hers.  Actually, her password is blank.  My next step is to place a password on her account and try this again.  I'll report back with my findings.  In the interim, has anyone run into this issue before???

Okay, as I'm working through this I see that I have to add the "Admin" account to each file with "read only" permission.  Simply changing the "everyone" account access does nothing.
So how do I change the permissions settings in iPhoto or Aperture to give each exported file the desired permissions?  I cannot locate a setting in the iPhoto or Aperture applications.
Also, I added a password to the user account.  It did not change how files are output.
