Ask to Buy Won't enable due to sharing

I've just set up a new iPod touch for my daughter, but when I go to set up Ask to buy in settings, it won't enable, and I get the following message:
"You cannot enable Ask to Buy for xxxxxx. Xxxxxxx is sharing purchases from an account also used by another family member. Ask to Buy can be enabled only on accounts that are not shared."
I've deactivated all sharing computers on both my wife's account and mine, but still have the same issue. I do not want to unleash a child unbridled on iTunes without the ability verify her purchases.
Appreciate the help.

SAme here, on iPhone and iPad. I know in app purchases are not shareable but you should still be able to authorise them.

When ever I try and enable "Ask To Buy" for my son I get a message stating "Cannot Enable Ask To Buy. "..." is sharing purchases from an account also used by another family member. Ask to buy can be enabled only on accounts that are not shared." Has me stumped.

    wingate65,
Thanks!  Deleting and re-adding the account after it had been signed in to all accounts on the iPhone worked.

  • HT201089 Family Sharing-ask to buy

I can not enable ask to buy for my son. It says he is sharing purchases from an account also used by another family member, but it's just the two of us at this point.

I had the same problem and found the solution posted by sdalberg.
I apparently erred by trying to add him to Family Share before I had his own iCloud account completely set up.
On your iOS device, go to your iCloud settings and click on the family member you are having problems with.  Click on "Remove."  You will get some warning messages and then emails saying that he has left the family.  Then go back to the family menu and "Add Family Member..." and add him again.  You will be asked to decide whether you want "Ask To Buy" enabled and turn it on.  Once you finish setting it up, "Ask To Buy" should be enabled.

  • HT201089 I am setting up an Ipad for my child and downloading apps with Ask to Buy turned on.  As the parent, I am not receiving notices/requests on my device

I have an ipad mini 2 with ios 8 and and iphone 5s with ios8
I am setting up the ipad for my child and the Ask to Buy feature is on in family sharing.
I am trying to download apps from the app store and it pops up the notification that I need to Ask to Buy and the request is being sent.
The request should be coming to my "parent" device, which happens to be my iphone correct ?   I'm not seeing any sort of requests.
According to the posts I've read a request is only sent once.

Apps downloaded on one should also appear on the other as long as the app in question runs on both iPads and iPhones.

  • Family Sharing - Unable to turn on Ask to Buy

I have been attempting to setup my daughters iPhone 5 to use Family Sharing.  I have the invite sent and accepted on her phone.  However, When i try to activate the "ask to buy" function from my phone on her account I get the following message
Has anyone else had this issue? if so, could you give me your ideas on how to work around this?  I feel like it could be something with the setup on my daughters phone, but completely sure.  I have her iCloud setup using her Apple ID, and the iTunes Store is setup using my Apple ID ( have also tried setting it up with her ID being associated with iTunes Store also but no good)

    Hi gt23,
It seems you would like to activate "Ask to Buy" on an adult account in your Family Sharing group. "Ask to Buy" cannot be activated on an adult account. The following article provides more details about Family Sharing:
Family purchases and payments - Apple Support
Ask to Buy is enabled by default for any children under 13 years old, and can be enabled during the setup process for any children 13-17 years old.* You can't turn on Ask to Buy for adults.

  • How do I approve an 'ask to buy' on a family share

How do I find my 'notifications' to approve an 'Ask to buy' from my daughter's profile?

    Hello Shaynn,
If you are the organizer of the Family Share you should see the Ask to Buy request in the Notification Center.
Request and make purchases with Ask to Buy - Apple Support
    Make or decline a purchase
If you're the organizer, you can use these steps to make or decline the purchase from your iOS device with iOS 8 or Mac with OS X Yosemite:
Open the notification to see the item that your family member wants to get. (See your notifications on your Mac or iOS device.)
    Approve or decline the purchase.
If you approve, you need to sign in with your Apple ID and password to make the purchase.
After it's purchased, the item is added to the family member’s account and shared with the rest of the family group. If a family member downloads a previous purchase again, downloads a shared purchase, installs an update, or uses a redemption code in the store, the organizer won't get a notification.
If the organizer doesn't make the purchase or decline the request, it will be deleted after 24 hours, and the child will need to make the request again.
So if you are on your iPhone…
You can access Notification Center from any screen, including the Lock screen. Just swipe down from the top of the screen.

  • Family Sharing Ask to Buy Not Working (with exact explanation)

I see lots of posts on this, so I will try to be very specific in hopes someone can solve this and others can learn from it too.
My family has 4 iPhones: my iPhone 6; my sons' two iPhone 6 Plus iPhones; and my daughter's iPhone 5S. All are running the latest iOS 8 (8.0.2).
I cannot seem to get any of my kids iPhones, with all of us on Family Sharing, to send a request to my iPhone for purchases they want to make. Despite what I believe is the correct setup for Family Sharing, they get asked for the security code of my credit card. I will go through the setup and steps in painstaking detail in hopes this helps:
In Settings > iCloud > Family I have myself as the "Organizer" and my 3 kids, with the "accounts" as follows:
Me = the regular iTunes account I have had for years
Son #1 = @icloud iTunes account I made on his iPhone with the new process for minors
Son #2 = ditto above, except for this son
Daughter = ditto above, except for my daughter
"Ask to Buy" is turned on for all 3 of my kids accounts
In iTunes & App Store on my iPhone 6 the Apple ID is indeed my Apple ID
In each of my kids' iPhones, in Settings > iCloud, it shows the same @icloud account as mentioned above. In other words, each of them have as their iCloud account the same ID as what I see in the Family Sharing on my iPhone.
Similarly in each of my kids' iPhones, in Settings > iTunes & App Store, the Apple ID is the same @icloud account for that respective kid's iPhone.
When I go to make a purchase on any of my kids' iPhones, here's exactly what happens…the example being to buy the movie Godzilla
Videos > Store > Search > "Godzilla" > "$19.99 BUY" > "BUY MOVIE" … up comes the "Sign In to iTunes Store" box that asks "Enter the Apple ID password for the [email protected]" (correct ID for that phone) … I enter the correct password for that kid's account … and then get the "Payment Verification Required" which says "Your Family Organizer, <my correct iTunes account> must enter the security code for the payment method." … I then press Continue and this is where it really surprises me … instead of sending any request to my iPhone (I get nothing) it brings up "Account Settings" and asks for the Security Code for my credit card. What the heck? Shouldn't this instead trigger a request to my iPhone? At this point there's no way to proceed. If I hit Cancel it exits out. If I hit Done (without entering the credit card security code) I get the notice "Confirmation Required" which says "Do you still want to buy Godzilla (2014) for $19.99?" … if I say Continue, I get the very same "Payment Verification Required" as mentioned above, which returns me again to the page asking for the credit card security code, essentially an endless loop.
Help! I am hoping someone knows how to solve this problem (and that this post helps others with similar problems).
    Thanks for any help!

    Thank you Ms. SJ!!!!
I was having this problem with my youngest daughters account.  Your post about establishing the payment history apart from family sharing made a lot of sense.  My oldest daughter has had an account for some time that she had been adding iTunes gift cards to, so her account was "established" before it was added to our family sharing group.  I had no trouble approving her purchases.
I had set up an account for my youngest daughter a long time ago, but used it only for email and iMessage on her iPod.  My ID was used for purchases on the device.  After Family sharing was launched and she got an iPad for Christmas, I decided to set up her ID as the primary account on her new iPad and added her to family sharing.
The first problem I ran into with Family Sharing was enabling the "Ask to Buy" function because since I set up accounts for my daughters a long time ago they were both showing as adults.  I learned from another post that the fix for this was to change their birthdates to January 1, 2001.  I did this and it has them listed as Age 14 on their family sharing profiles - fine.
I then ran into the same problem with Ask to Buy that David Wilkie described above.  My fix was a little different from yours and less intensive.
Removed my youngest daughter from family sharing
Purchased an app using her account alone (with an iTunes gift card attached) to establish a purchase history.
I then re-added her to our family sharing group.
I had her purchase a song using "Ask to Buy" and it worked as expected.
Thanks for going through the legwork with support to find this fix and share it.  I hope my experience can be helpful as well.

  • ITunes Family Sharing - Ask to Buy - I, the pay source, want the option to be asked regardless of age!

Ask to Buy in Family Sharing does not require a person over 18 to at least ask the payer to provide approval when purchasing.  Not even the option to turn it on/off ???
How Lame is this… are you telling me that kids/young adults/even grown adults over 18 are responsible enough (or naturally mature enough) to NOT have to seek their parents/payer's approval for spending their money on "entertainment" for themselves?  Give me the DANG option as the OWNER and pay source to turn them off if/when I want to.  Its like keys to the car.  Irresponsibility or disregard to responsibility will get you grounded and the key taken away.  I see this PRIVILEGE no different and thus MUST be revokable (at the payer's discretion at any time).
If I am paying for it.. I want to know about it.. no matter how old the person is I am sharing my library with.  Its a check and balance / courtsey thing… not a trust thing.
GIVE ME THE 'ASK TO BUY' OPTION  FOR FAMILY MEMBERS 18 or older.  Or Apple can build roles other than child(less then 18) or adult (18 or more) that I can place them in that role myself with the desired permissions (like a College Student)!
I DO NOT think is it safe or secure to assume that the Ask to Buy option can be disabled permanently for anyone 18 or over.  What if the device is left unattended or stolen and somehow accessed without permission .. that's way to easy for a dishonest person to empty you out!
I will not be using this feature until this is an option.  I love the idea and it would be very helpful/useful if this only this option existed.
I'm the parent, I decide this type of thing in my household, not Apple!

  • "Ask to buy" requests not appearing in notification center (family sharing)

I understand that if one misses an "ask to buy" request from a family member from the lock screen, it is supposed to be available in the notification center.  However, these requests are not being logged in my notification center.  There doesn't seem to be a setting in Settings to turn on or off these type of notifications.
Any idea why they are not appearing in the notification center?

    Hi,
Same issue here. I've logged in and out of the AppStore and still the same issue. I have 3 kids, each with their own device, and each one is REQUIRED to "Ask to Buy". Neither my wife or I get any notification to approve. I've checked my Mac as well as the Family Sharing on both iPhone 6's and everywhere shows our family listings correct.
It cannot be THIS HARD to figure out. Apple must be having some issues, however this is extremely frustrating. No one can buy any apps?!??!?! You'd think they'd like to sell more stuff?!
Please help! Now my son needs apps for school and he cannot get them on his iPad. Even on the App store it says "approve on this device with parent" and that link won't work.
    Thanks.

  • "Ask to buy" and "Sign in to Approve" process is not working

Last weekend I setup Family Sharing for the first time, but the "Ask to buy" and "Sign in to Approve" process is not working. I am the Family Organizer and I created an account for my child under 13 with "Ask to buy" enabled. My child can go in to the App Store, click "Buy" for a desired app and I get a notification on my iPhone 5s... as expected. When I open the Notification I have the option to Decline or Approve. If I select Approve, a box pops up asking me to enter the password for my child's iCloud account to complete the request. (It seems odd to me that I'd have to enter his password instead of my own, but whatever.) So I enter his password and the box goes away for a second and then comes right back like I typed it wrong or something. I enter it again and again and always the same box comes back and the request is never completed. We've tried this several times over several days and always see the same behavior. I have also tried entering my password instead of his (since that makes more sense to me) but I encounter the same problem.
I have verified that I am signed in to my iCloud account and my iTunes account on my iPhone 5s. I have also verified that my son is logged in with his iCloud/iTunes account on his iPod touch, so why isn't this working? Additionally, if I disable "Ask to Buy" then I can successfully install apps on his iPod from the iPod itself.
Is it normal for the "Sign in to Approve" box to show his iCloud address instead of mine? And if so, why doesn't it complete when I enter his password? Am I missing something completely? This is driving me crazy.

  • Icloud password loop when declining an ask to buy purchase using family sharing

My daughter asked to buy an app using family sharing. I received the notification on my phone and when I hit decline, it asks for my icloud password. • The notifications for Ask To Buy never come through.  How to fix?

I set up family sharing for my kids.  I enabled Ask To Buy.  They have tried to get numerous apps, but I never get the notification, never have the opportunity to approve, and they have not been able to add anything to thier devices.

    That is not covered.

  • Ask to buy without the need to share kids' Apple ID-password

I would like my kids the new  "Ask to buy" feature, but it requires them to fill in their iCloud-password right after they hit the Download/Install-button.
I don't want to share their Apple-ID password because it also allows them to turn off stuff like Find my iPhone by mistake.
Sharing an important password like that with feels not right.
Any idea how to enable them to Ask a parent to buy an app via family sharing without the need for their Apple ID-password? Am I missing something? Or is it impossible?

It may help to enable the menu bar with Ctrl+B if it is currently hidden.
Use Store > Sign Out to sign out of the iTunes Store.
Use Store > Sign In... to sign into the account you want to use.

Have you received the email saying that it's available and have you paid for the album ? You are not charged when you pre-order an item, you are only charged when it's released. If you have/had a balance and/or credit card on your account then iTunes should have been able to collect the payment for it and it should show in your account's purchase history : See your purchase history in the iTunes Store
In which case does the Store > Check For Available Downloads menu option non your computer's iTunes download it, and/or does it show in the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store homepage for downloading ?
