Asking for a receipt for e-mail

Hello, I would like to know how to send an e-mail and ask for a receipt so I know they have received the mail.
I have running mail version 1.3.11
Thank you.

is there a Universal feature which, regardless of recipients mail app,
that will allow the ability of the sender to be notified when mail is read?
There isn't any email client that provides a read receipt without the recipient's knowledge when requested by the sender of a message and you wouldn't want to use an email client that does so. I certainly wouldn't and if there was an email client that did so, a spammer could request a read receipt and if a spam message received on such an email client was opened/read, the recipient would be alerting the spammer that his/her email address is valid causing even more spam to be received.
This is a basic outlook feature?
As with other email clients that support requesting a read receipt for sent messages and providing a read receipt when opening a received message that includes a read receipt request by the sender, Outlook includes 3 settings.
Provide a read receipt when opening all messages that include a read receipt request.
Don't provide a read receipt when opening any message that includes a read receipt request.
Be prompted when opening any message that includes a read receipt request. The prompt is provide it or don't provide it on a per message basis.
I use Windows Outlook at work and I don't request a read receipt for sent messages nor do I provide a read receipt when opening any message that includes a read receipt request since I consider this an invasion of my privacy.

  • I am having trouble getting Mail to import my Hotmail. It was working well up to around xmas but since then it hasn't worked at all. Keeps asking for my mail password and when I put it in nothing happens or it pops up again asking for it.

I have been using mail for quite a while and no issue. Before xmas for some strange reason my computer asked me for my keychain password. I couldnt remember and hence lost control of my mail boxes. I deleted the keychain and then started putting in the passwords again. My icloud mail is working fine as is imessage and facetime. For some strange reason it wont work with my hotmail address. It keeps poping up asking for the password for the hotmail email and I keep putting it in but no mail arrives or goes. I have looked in the new keychain and it is in there. I have tried adding it in the mail settings and saved it but it dont save. I have deleted the mail account and started again by inputting it as new and it gets its settings then and same result. Any ideas?

Did you ever resolve the iCloud problem.I am in the same position and its driving me mad!!! If you have a link to an solution I would appreciate it.

  • Keep being asked for password: Mail Help unhelpful

Last week I had to trash my keychains/passwords on the recommendation of Skype help. It solved my immediate problem but now I get asked for a password every time I launch Mail.
I've tried Mail help and got the following advice:
"To change the keychain lock settings:
Open Keychain Access, located in Applications/Utilities (or click the link provided on this page).
Select your login keychain, choose Edit > "Change Settings for Keychain 'login'."
To reduce the number of requests for your keychain password, deselect the option for the number of minutes of inactivity before the keychain is locked, or increase the number of minutes. You can also deselect "Lock when sleeping" option."
Trouble is, I see nothing that resembles a "login keychain".
Is the above the advice I need. If yes, what/where is my login keychain; if no, what now?

Thanks for the feedback. This means the login keychain itself was "there", just inaccessible for some reason. The actual keychains are stored in one of the following locations, depending on their applicability:
    /System/Library/Keychains/
    /Library/Keychains/
    ~/Library/Keychains/
login, in particular, being different for each user, is stored in ~/Library/Keychains/.
On my system, the System keychain is stored in /Library/Keychains/. Do you see a System keychain in more than one of the aforementioned locations? Maybe that's the reason you see more than one instance of it in Keychain Access.
I'm wondering now if the problem was just that there was something wrong with the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.keychainaccess.plist preferences file. Guess we'll never know what happened here.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the file path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the file path there.

  • It keeps asking for e-mail address to sign in

when trying to sign in it keeps asking for my e-mail and password

    Hi Mandy2010 and rpatrick!
Unfortunately, you can't sign in without using your e-mail address. I believe you are using e-Print. If so, then it is necessary to register your device in order to use the app.
When putting the e-mail address you have to register your printer to HP in HP's website. The link will be provided down below. The main purpose for registering your device is to check what printer you have, so then it can identify it and can allow you to have access to the printer.

For some reason my mail has stopped working. The page keeps asking for an incoming mail server. I put in imap.mail.me.com and that is not working. Also, I can't put in my Google mail either. Has apple just stopped using the mail feature? I had a mobile me account and switched to ICloud and now I have all kind of glitches.
    Very frustrated.

  • Asking for receipt of read mail

Can anyone tell me whether it is possible to ask for a receipt indicating that the person to whom u have sent mail has read it? I cannot seem to find this feature in the Mail program.
    Thank you

It is a hidden feature, and comes with several warnings:
    use at your own risk
once you set it, it applies to all messages until you unset it
it can only be done from the terminal, with mail shut down
using it does not guarantee a response - some mail clients will ignore it, and many mail users will have told their clients to ignore it
In Terminal enter the following text, keeping all quotes and spaces exactly:
    defaults write com.apple.mail UserHeaders '{"Disposition-Notification-To"="you@address";}'
(of course, using your correct email address instead of "you@address")
    To turn it off:
    defaults delete com.apple.mail UserHeaders

  • Old Mail configuration asking for receipts

Back in 2006, using my G4, I had found someone's method of configuring Mail to request a delivery receipt from each recipient. The configuration instructions are pasted here:
    +• Open Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/)+
+• Enter the folowoing text (make sure to keep all quotes exactly as is!)+
    +defaults write com.apple.mail UserHeaders '{"Disposition-Notification-To"="your@address";}'+
+(of course, using your correct email address instead of "your@address")+
+• All future messages sent with Mail will now include the Disposition-Notification-To header which is the one asking for a return receipt.+
+If you wish to turn off this feature in the future, type the following in the Terminal:+
    +defaults delete com.apple.mail UserHeaders+
I had turned off the feature long ago. After my G4's power supply failure three weeks ago and the moving of all my files over to the MacBook, someone just alerted me that Mail is requesting delivery receipts. I tried typing into Terminal the instructions for turning the feature off, but Terminal states the UserHeader instruction was never given (and, because this is a different computer, Terminal is correct.)
Does anyone know what I can do to get Mail to stop requesting receipts?
    Thanks!

Good thought. I had done a global search for 'UserHeader' and the word 'receipt,' but 'UserHeader' didn't turn up anywhere on the drive, and 'receipt' showed up only in places we would expect. But I then opened the Mail.plist file to be sure, and neither 'UserHeader' nor 'receipt' was in there.
I sent a test email from that account to another email account I use and no receipt request was generated. And I'm still waiting to hear back from others I asked. But the strange thing is, this person who alerted me about it said that the requests are being sent back to the email address I was using back in 2006 but haven't used for over a year. So, something old is still lurking, either on my computer or his. Very weird. I just hope I'm not ******* off other folks with those annoying requests!
Thanks for your help! I'm all ears if you have any more ideas.

  • Instead of "Mailbox busy", Mail asks for password, long delay

We're testing Mail as a replacement for Eudora at my place of work. There is a POP account (not .mac) that is checked by five people. Using Eudora 6.x, if one person was checking the account, anybody else trying to check would get a Mailbox Busy message. Using Mail, you'd get an alert symbol next to the mailbox in the mailbox list, but next time mail was checked and the mailbox wasn't busy, it would work fine.
We just switched to a new mail server yesterday (on a Vereo host?) and now, though Eudora is behaving as before if the account is busy, Mail will pop up a box saying the password wasn't recognized, asking for the correct password, and then there's a loooong delay while it times out.
I presume the new server is sending some kind of busy message that Mail interprets incorrectly, but it's a show-stopper for us. Currently our options are:
    1. Stop using a shared mailbox (my personal preference, but the actual users might not go for it)
    2. Find out from the provider why the new server is causing this behavior (fat chance--they're likely to blame it on our weird Apple software)
    3. Find out how to make Mail interpret the busy signal correctly.
    4. Forward the account's mail to all the users' own addresses, instead of having them check that account themselves (am doing this now, will see how it works out. It will require more storage space on the server, at a minimum.)
I'm trying to find out if the server supports IMAP but in any case that would not be a workable solution for us.
Any feedback or enlightenment would be greatly appreciated.

"More Like this" entry " Phantom Mail Account won't let go! Steven Shmerler SASNET Design, New York  Oct 10, 2011 7:56 PM" gave me a clue, which after 15 minutes without annoying message, seems to work.
Went to Mail Preferences/ Accounts/ Account Information/ Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)/ Edit SMTP Server List...
There were four (count them, 4) references to Earthlink. I deleted them, restarted Mail, and so far so good.

  • IOs 8.1 Mail app keeps asking for iCloud password

Since the update to iOs 8.1 i have a problem with my mailbox.
Every time i want to create a new mail, it asks me for my iCloud password.
This happens on my iPhone (6) and iPad (Air) while im in my iCloud inbox, Gmail inbox, or just the general overview.
Whenever i press the create new mail icon it will ask for my iCloud password.
    - When i give the iCloud password (correct one) it wont ask for it again in the next 15 mins
    - When i dont give the iCloud password (cancel) i can just send mails but it will ask for the password whenever i create a new mail.
    What i did:
    - Remove iCloud account > reboot > Add iCloud account > didnt solve the problem
    - Remove Keychain  > didnt solve the problem
    - Remove iCloud photo's > didnt solve the problem
    - Remove iCloud mail > still asks for the iCloud password.
    - Remove iCloud > solves the problem but i dont want to remove iCloud
    - Disabled all iCloud options, (mail, contacts, etc) > didnt solve the problem
    - Disabled 2 step verification > didnt solve the problem
Everytime i want to create a new mail, u see the phone/pad use the "syncing icon" 3x 5 seconds, maybe a link here?
Anyone else with any ideas that i can try?

That's interesting that it didn't start to happen after a while on your work iPad. I just tried my iPad this evening and I'm getting the same iCloud password popup message when I try to create a new mail or enable "Contacts Only' in Airdrop.
I still think it's a problem with our iCloud accounts. Some flag in the system isn't set or something for some reason. I don't even have mail switched on in my iCloud account so there is no valid reason why Mail.app would try and authenticate to iCloud just because we create a new email.
Signing out of iCloud fixes the issue for me (not that it's a valid long term solution) so that points the finger directly at a setting on my server side iCloud account I think.

  • Not able to open mail from my mac, gmail repeatedly asking for password. but using same password able to open gmail on safari

not able to open mail from my mac, gmail repeatedly asking for password. but using same password able to open gmail on safari

okay well they got me to take out some .plist files to see if that would help it didn't. I'm not sure what ones that they deleted for my self maybe someone here would be abel to tell you what ones to take out but didn't work the one that came close to working was this going into keychain and deleting the account(s) then reading them again.
if you are to do this please back up first with Time Machine. You can do this with a usb drive.
Okay so go back to where you had internet accounts and make sure mail is shut. click the - on the account your having problems with then quit system preferences.
Okay so then press cmd and space bar at the same time then type 'keychain access' into the search then click on 'keychain access'
once it is open go to the top of the window and put your email address that you are having problems with.
once you have put in your full email, have a look at what comes up i deleted things in the kind colome with 'internet password' and anything with under name that had smtp.gmail.com or imap.gmail.com so it would look like this, map.gmail.com - internet password.
right click and delete them. make sure not to touch any other files that dont say them things on them.
Once you have done this quit keychain access and then restart the computer, once the computer is restarted go back to system preferences and internet accounts and re-add the account.
Hope this helps. if something is not clear just ask.

It's asking for a password, i'm putting in the correct one and it's still not working. it says mail cant connect to the account "...."
    please help!

If you've activated 2-step verification, you need to generate an application-specific password in your Google account and enter it instead of the login password you use on the website.

This is your husband's app, only your husband can update it. Apps are forever tied to the Apple ID that purchased them. No other Apple ID can update someone else's app.
