ASM 10g RAC
Hi Team,
We are using 10g RAc with ASM file system....here the problem is ..One of our engineer by mistake added a datafile in File System insted of adding into ASM disk groups.. it has created in node1 oracle home location....and the file is currently used by database....
295 +DG8/datafile/pm_tdat1_084.dbf 10240
296 +DG9/datafile/pm_tdat_001.276.771180789 10240
*297 /oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1/dbs/+DG5 5120*
298 +DG9/datafile/pm_tidx_001.277.771224587 5120
How to make this as ASM file system..!!
Thanks,
MM

The backup into the ASM diskgroup can be done online.
For the switch to copy and the following recover datafile, the datafile needs to be set offline, though.
The amount of Redo, generated during the Online Backup determines the time the recovery will need.

MULTIPLE USERS 10G RAC ORACLE_HOME INSTALL WITH ASM/CRS
Hi,
We need to install multiple 10g RAC databases on a two node Sun servers. Below is our configuration:
1) Sun Solaris (ver 10) with Sun Cluster 3.2
2) One ASM/CRS install (by 1 OS account)
3) Four ORACLE_HOME 10g database install (by 4 different OS user accounts)
We would like to use one ASM instance for all four databases with appropriate privileges.
OS User: OS Group
======== =========
oraasm dbaasm - (ASM and CRS install owner)
ora1 dbaora1 - first db owner
ora2 dbaora2 - second db owner
ora3 dbaora3 - third db owner
ora4 dbaora4 - fourth db owner
I understand that certain privileges need to be shared between ASM/CRS and DB owners. Please let me know the steps to be followed to complete this install.
Thanks in advance.Hi
Please read that: Documentation http://download.oracle.com/docs/html/B10766_08/intro.htm
- You can install and operate multiple Oracle homes and different versions of Oracle cluster database software on the same computer as described in the following points:
-You can install multiple Oracle Database 10g RAC homes on the same node. The multiple homes feature enables you to install one or more releases on the same machine in multiple Oracle home directories. However, each node can have only one CRS home.
-In addition, you cannot install Oracle Database 10g RAC into an existing single-instance Oracle home. If you have an Oracle home for Oracle Database 10g, then use a different Oracle home, and one that is available across the entire cluster for your new installation. Similarly, if you have an Oracle home for an earlier Oracle cluster database software release, then you must also use a different home for the new installation.
If the OUI detects an earlier version of a database, then the OUI asks you about your upgrade preferences. You have the option to upgrade one of the previous-version databases with DBUA or to create a new database using DBCA. The information collected during this dialog is passed to DBUA or DBCA after the software is installed.
- You can use the OUI to complete some of the de-install and re-install steps for Oracle Database 10g Real Application Clusters if needed.
Note:
Do not move Oracle binaries from one Oracle home to another because this causes dynamic link failures.
. If you are using ASM with Oracle database instances from multiple database homes on the same node, then Oracle recommends that you run the ASM instance from an Oracle home that is distinct from the database homes. In addition, the ASM home should be installed on every cluster node. This prevents the accidental removal of ASM instances that are in use by databases from other homes during the de-installation of a database's Oracle home. -
10g RAC - should I use RAW, OCFS and/or ASM ?
I am about to install 10G RAC on RHAS3. Options for sharing disk partitions are raw, OCFS and ASM. The OCR and voting files must be raw or OCFS, I would tend to go for OCFS in this case. For the Oracle datafiles, again, I would tend to go for OCFS simply for ease of management since ASM seems to add another layer of complexity, and raw lacks flexibility. OCFS however is also new technology and may still have some stability issues. I'm not yet sure of our disk configuration, but there will be HBA cards in each machine with one or two SAN partitions, so I don't expect some of the ASM features such as mirroring etc. will be required as this will be done in the hardware. Does anyone have any recommendations or experiences(good or bad) in which way to go ?
PhilipWe're using raw partitions for some years now, (since oracle 8i, then 9i and now 10g). It is quite flexible, but you shouldn't use physical partitions but LVM. It's very stable.
Now on 10g we're using ASM on some sites where mirroring is needed. It works, but not so stable as raw. we discover some bugs as well.
We've never used OCFS. I don't like it. To much limits. I belive that special utilities are needed for managing files. I don't like linux system software produced by oracle. -
10G RAC on AIX without ASM & HACMP.
Hi,
I want to install ORACLE 10G RAC on AIX but I dont want ot use ASM or HACMP/GPFC.
Just want to install with CRS and RAW devices. Is it possible to install 10g RAC with CRS and RAW devices.
What is the best approach for this.
Regards
MMUWe're running CRS on AIX. No ASM or HACMP.
We do have the db datafiles on GPFS. We've also got one voting disk on GPFS and two on raw devices. -

Is this a red herring or is it the reason ASM won't start? At what point should this entry have been created (ie should it already exist when ASM starts or should ASM create it)? Can I manually create the entry using crsstat.
Many thanks
PaulIt all depends on what your mapping problem was and what you did to resolve it. Here are a couple of things you could try:
-Make sure the orc.loc file on ebdb1 has the same entry as ebdb2. Also, say you are using shared raw devices for CRS: make sure your raw devices are consistent on both nodes.
If the above does not work
-Make sure the shared devices are consistent on both nodes and restore one of the OCR backups. I am sure at least one of the backups 4hrs/8hrs/1day/2day/1week some thing must be a worthwhile. If you do restore OCR from a backup make sure to run cluvfy before you start your CRS.
Always a good practise to take a backup of status quo before you restore from the backups.
It would be interesting to know what lead to your disk mapping problem in the first palce.
Good Luck! -
Oracle 10g RAC using ASM - Storage Issue
I’ve an issue related to Oracle 10g RAC.
I’ve 2 node cluster each being Dell 2850 Server with RHEL 4.0
I’ve EMC CX300 SAN storage with following partitions
/orasoft 10 Gb OCFS2 File system
/oracrs 2 Gb OCFS2 File system
/orabackup 100 Gb OCFS2 File system
The datafiles are on ASM which is not directly visible in OS.
I’ve common Oracle Home installed in /orasoft/db_1 which is shared by both nodes in cluster.
I’ve faced an issue recently related to EMC storage.
The /orasoft partition displays 1.4 Gb space available using df command.
With both nodes sharing the common Oracle Home (/orasoft/db_1), when ever I try to touch a file I get an error as No Space left on device. I’m unable to start any service with the same reason.
Is this setup correct ??
Can anyone help me with this storage issue ??Need a clarification here...what do you mean by "Storage System"...do you mean a server/node or the SAN storage system. If you are referring to a server/node's local storage, then it would NOT be possible for use by RAC, since the disk space has to be shared among the nodes.
Here is what you can do:
- Create two partitions/devices (for example Disk_1 and Disk_2) in the SAN storage
- Create a ASM disk group which would mirror Disk_1 to Disk_2.
Again, please note that the partitions have to be visible and be accessible read/write from both the nodes/servers.

Thanks

If you create a new diskgroup you may be to add the same diskgroup to parameter file or spfile and which will be needing down time.
sugestion: Instead of creating new diskgroup you should to add disk to existing group.if you add asm disk to existing group your all problem will be solved and Oracle itself will be managing all.And than i am sure no need to add entry in the parameter or spfile like +db_create_file_dest=.....

Solaris 10 and Hitachi LUN mapping with Oracle 10g RAC and ASM?
Hi all,
I am working on an Oracle 10g RAC and ASM installation with Sun E6900 servers attached to a Hitachi SAN for shared storage with Sun Solaris 10 as the server OS. We are using Oracle 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.3) RAC clusterware
for the clustering software and raw devices for shared storage and Veritas VxFs 4.1 filesystem.
My question is this:
How do I map the raw devices and LUNs on the Hitachi SAN to Solaris 10 OS and Oracle 10g RAC ASM?
I am aware that with an Oracle 10g RAC and ASM instance, one needs to configure the ASM instance initialization parameter file to set the asm_diskstring setting to recognize the LUNs that are presented to the host.
I know that Sun Solaris 10 uses /dev/rdsk/CwTxDySz naming convention at the OS level for disks. However, how would I map this to Oracle 10g ASM settings?
I cannot find this critical piece of information ANYWHERE!!!!
Thanks for your help! You don't seem to state categorically that you are using Solaris Cluster, so I'll assume it since this is mainly a forum about Solaris Cluster (and IMHO, Solaris Cluster with Clusterware is better than Clusterware on its own).
Clusterware has to see the same device names from all cluster nodes. This is why Solaris Cluster (SC) is a positive benefit over Clusterware because SC provides an automatically managed, consistent name space. Clusterware on its own forces you to manage either the symbolic links (or worse mknods) to create a consistent namespace!
So, given the SC consistent namespace you simple add the raw devices into the ASM configuration, i.e. /dev/did/rdsk/dXsY. If you are using Solaris Volume Manager, you would use /dev/md/<setname>/rdsk/dXXX and if you were using CVM/VxVM you would use /dev/vx/rdsk/<dg_name>/<dev_name>.
Of course, if you genuinely are using Clusterware on its own, then you have somewhat of a management issue! ... time to think about installing SC?

Asm, instance and service failing to start 10g rac redhat el5
hi,
i have been following a how to guide from oracle's website about implementing a 10g rac system using el5 (http://www.oracle.com/technology/pub/articles/hunter_rac10gr2_iscsi.html), by the end of the installation and setup I had both the nodes up and running and all services were up and running. Oracle Clusterware is configured to start the VIP, listener, instance, ASM, database services and other resources during system boot. Starting with 10.1.0.4, it is possible to modify some resources to have their profile parameter AUTO_START set to the value 2. This means that after node reboot, or when Oracle Clusterware is started, resources with AUTO_START=2 will need to be started manually via srvctl. Please work with Oracle Support if you need to modify this attribute.

Oracle database 10g RAc an ASM configuration
Hi all,
I want to ask to everybody something about Oracle 10g RAC and ASm configuration. We plan to migrate to Oracle 10g from 9i, and we will begin configuring oracle but we have to decide which configuration are the best.
Our materials are bellow:
Hardware: RP 3440 (HP)
OS : HPUX 11i Ver 1
Storage: EVA 4000 (eva disk group)
The problem is:
Our supplier recommand us to use HP serviguard + HP serviceguard extension for RAC+ RAc and Raw device as configuration.
But we want to use Oracekl Clusterware + RAC + ASM
My question is if anybody know what is the best configuration, we want to use ASm.
Can we use HP serviguard and ASM.
Some documentations or link explain oracle RAC and ASM configuration will be appreciate.
Thanks for your help.

raitsarevoHello,
there's no extra RAC software package, but the option is only offered, if one of the supported cluster layers for the respective OS has been installed before.
10.1.0.3 looks like a complete redesign, but anyway it is a patch, you have to install 10.1.0.2 first. -
Does managing Oracle 10g RAC with ASM require full root access?
We currently have three entirely separate support areas, Unix, Storage and DBA. We're now considering using Oracle 10g RAC with ASM and as part of the assessment trying to work out if we can still draw similar support boundaries. I know that installing RAC and configuring ASM requires root access but will DBA continue to need root access to manage & support RAC? If so, does anyone know if the commands they need can be RBAC'd or if we just need to share root access going forwards. I've had a look at a number of docs including http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/rac.102/b14197/toc.htm. which is fairly informative but none of them seem to mention the requirement for root access on Solaris. I'm guessing they just assume that it's available, but that's not generally the case in our environment.
All advice / info welcome!I would have thought that the only reason you would need root access once RAC and ASM had been set up would be to add more disks to the ASM configuration. This would be needed to change the ownership on the raw LUNs or to make additions to metasets (SVM/Oban) or diskgroups (VxVM/CVM). Beyond that, I can't imagine needing root access.
I'm sure others will chime in if they can think of other reasons!
Regards,
Tim

I want to use RAC for clustering. My shared disk is a NetApp Filer FS250 that can only be mounted throught NFS. RAW devices have to be excluded, alsi OCFS i think works similar to raw devices and need to see phisical disk to create partition. ASM instead can work on an NFS mount?
