ASM configuration on RAC

hi,
i am instaling a to node RAC on RedHat Linux 5.i am using shared storage and OCFs2 . My db version is 10.2 while i am using DBCA to configure ASM Diskgroup i am getting the follwing errors
could not mount the diskgroup on remote node node2
using connection service node2:1521+ASM2.Ensure that
the listener is running on this node and the ASM
instance is registered to the listener. Received the following error:-
ORA-15032 not all alteratios performed
ORA-15130 diskgroup "D" is being dismounted
Regards
Supriyo Dey

Has the second node access to the disks/partitions, which you are using for the diskgroups?
Are the permission for the disks/partitions set to oracle:dba on both nodes?
If you use ASMLIB, have you scanned the disks on the second node?

Sebastian

  • Oracle database 10g RAc an ASM configuration

    Hi all,
I want to ask to everybody something about Oracle 10g RAC and ASm configuration. We plan to migrate to Oracle 10g from 9i, and we will begin configuring oracle but we have to decide which configuration are the best.
    Our materials are bellow:
    Hardware: RP 3440 (HP)
    OS : HPUX 11i Ver 1
Storage: EVA 4000 (eva disk group)
    The problem is:
Our supplier recommand us to use HP serviguard + HP serviceguard extension for RAC+ RAc and Raw device as configuration.
But we want to use Oracekl Clusterware + RAC + ASM
My question is if anybody know what is the best configuration, we want to use ASm.
Can we use HP serviguard and ASM.
Some documentations or link explain oracle RAC and ASM configuration will be appreciate.
    Thanks for your help.
    Regards.

    Hello,
there's no extra RAC software package, but the option is only offered, if one of the supported cluster layers for the respective OS has been installed before.
10.1.0.3 looks like a complete redesign, but anyway it is a patch, you have to install 10.1.0.2 first.

  • SAN reboot for oracle DB at ASM in linux RAC

    Hi Experts,
we use 10.2.0.4 database in ASM at oracle RAC in red hat 5 linux.
we use 3 directoey ( asm, crs, and database)
I got notes that SAN box (support SAM in database) will be reboot.
Under this condition, what do i need to do? shutdown instance? database? crs? or asm instance?
    Thanks for your help?

what means is about start all oracle related services in sequence?CRS will start the complete Oracle cluster s/w cluster for you - ASM, RAC, nodeapps, etc.
Usually, the only effort required is simply hitting the reset/power on button - as the o/s will boot, CRS will start and it will in turn bring up the s/w stack. No manual intervention required. (unless you on purpose configured it differently)
Based on Billy suggestion, can I use srvctl stop nodeapps -n all and #ORA_CRS_HOME/bin/crsctl stop crsNo - my suggestion is that before the SAN maintenance window period start, you do a "+shutdown -h now+" on all cluster nodes to halt/powerdown each and every RAC server.
And after the SAN maintenance period is over, and the SAN available again, ssh into the LoM (Lights Out Management) console of each server and do a "+start SYS+" (or equivalent) to powerup the server.
In other words, with the SAN down/busy rebooting/undergoing maintenance, I would not want to have my RAC servers up and running as there is no storage layer to run them on. IMO, it is a lot safer to have these servers powered down to during such a maintenance period.
PS. I have even had the odd case that during SAN maintenance power cables being pulled, Interconnect switches accidentally reset and so on - or you could have some bright spark also shutting down the aircon with the SAN and your RAC servers suffering heat problems and potential damage while running. So my question is - why should I take the risk of keeping my RAC servers up when the storage layer is not there and the cluster is broken and useless? Surely it makes a lot more sense to power down those servers too and then only power them on again when the maintenance period is over and the SAN (and data centre) is in a proper running state again.

  • Add ASM disk in RAC

    Hello everyone,
    We are on 10gR2 ASM.
The system admin has provided one disk as follows:
    On node-1 (tphsmsd1)
    /dev/rdisk/disk83 CANDIDATE
    On node-2 (tphsmsd2)
    /dev/rdisk/disk77 CANDIDATE
I've read that paths of ASM disks in RAC may be different.
When I give "ls -l /dev/rdisk/disk83" gives no such files and vice-versa for disk on node2.
I don't understand how ASM handles this ? If I add disk (disk83) on node 1 how it's going to get to that disk on node 2 ?
    thanks

If I add disk (disk83) on node 1 how it's going to get to that disk on node 2 ?The header label of the disk, identifies the ASM disk name and diskgroup it belongs to. You can hexdump or octaldump the 1st 128 bytes of the device as ascii chars to view the label. The string "+ORCLDISK+" in the header identifies it as an ASM disk. This is then followed by the ASM diskname and then the AM diskgroup it belongs to.
But there's no reason for not having a consistent and static device name layer across all cluster nodes. Each scsi device has a WWID (World Wide ID)- a unique identifier. This means that the kernel (and kernel drivers) can uniquely identify a device.
On Linux, Multipath is used to map a logical device name to a WWID - and using the same +/etc/multipath.conf+ configuration file on all cluster nodes, ensures that the same device names are used across the cluster.
But from the the device file entry you listed, you're likely not running Linux? In that case, depending on the Unix flavour used and the type of cluster storage, there can be similar options to Linux's Multipath. One such option is EMC's PowerPath - but that of course is specific to EMC SANs and requires additional licensing fees.

  • Help while creating ASM instance on rac environment on Linux

Help while creating ASM instance on rac environment on Oracle enterprise Linux 4 x84_64 Update 5 (10g2).
    a) Installed ASMLib 2.0 Packages
    b) Configured and Loaded the ASMLib 2.0 Packages
    c) Created ASM Disks for Oracle
    d) I can see, three volumes already defined for ASM file system.
By running following command (on both node), I get following that means disk are detected.
    /etc/init.d/oracleasm listdisks
    VOL1
    VOL2
    VOL3
But Disk members not displayed for creating disk groups. I even tried to "Change Disk Discovery Path" button and put "ORCL:VOL*" but still no luck.
Someone told me use, use ADD DISKS button but this button is disabled for me.
Can anyone, please help me if I missing something.

    *****SOLVED******
    Thanks for reply..
I set the Change Disk Discovery Path" to /dev/oracleasm/disk/* instead of "ORCL:VOL* and this worked for me.

  • ASM Configuration

    Hi Everybody,
    My question is:
Is it possible to configure ASM using shared file system on RAC other than configuring raw devices . If it so how to do it?
    Environment:
    OS: Sun SPARC Solaris 10
    SUN Servers:V490
    Number of Nodes: 2
    Storage Server:3150
    Switches:SAN
    RDBMS: Oracle 10.2.0 RAC
Clusterware: Configuring Raw Devices for OCR and Voting Disk.
How to configure ASM on Shared Storage for database files as we are not using Third party clusters?
What are the possible storage options for ASM as per my requirement?
I seen in document it is very dfficult to manage and administure ASM configured using RAW Devices?
in both the cases kindly provide me steps how to do it by using DBCA.
Is it necessary to use recovery area on ASM?
Waiting for your favourable reply from RAC experts.

    Hi,
Steve Karam has some great notes on this:
One thing to remember is that ASM is not RAID. Oracle portrays ASM as a Volume Manager, filesystem, miracle, whatever you would like to call it, but in reality it is no more than extent management and load balancing; it scatters extents across your LUNs (1MB stripe size for datafiles/archivelogs, 128k stripe size for redo/controlfiles). It also provides extent-based mirroring for extra redundancy.
This benefits us in a couple ways. First, remember that your OS, HBA, or other parts of the host driver stack may have limits per LUN on I/O. Distributing your extents across multiple LUNs with ASM will provide better I/O concurrency by load balancing across them, eliminating this bottleneck.
Second, carving into multiple LUNs allows multiple ASM volumes. Multiple volumes help us if our hardware has any LUN-based migration utilities for snapshots or cloning.
Third, you may end up with multiple LUNs if you need to add capacity. ASM allows us to resize a diskgroup on-the-fly AND rebalance our extents evenly at the same time when we add a new LUN. Even if you only start with a single LUN, you may end up with more in the long run.
Fourth, because an ASM diskgroup is not true RAID, you are able to use it to stripe across volumes. This means that in a SAN with 3 trays, you can carve a LUN from each tray and use it to form a single ASM diskgroup. This further distributes your storage and reduces throughput bottlenecks.
I have not seen any tried and true formula for the number of LUNs per ASM diskgroup, but you can calculate it based on your throughput per capacity. Make sure the LUNs provide maximum and equivalent I/O operations per second per gigabyte.

  • How to reuse the same disk (partition) for next ASM configuration?

    Hello All,
I had successfully installed and configured ASM instance once, but I need to do a reinstallation and I would like to use the same disk (partition) as with previous ASM configuration.
The disk path used was: /dev/rdsk/c1t3d0s7
I have to regretfully admit that I may not have used the right ASM un-installation procedure. I ran installer and opted to de-install products. Consequently, I had removed ASM home. Now, when I running new ASM installation, everything goes fine until the screen where I should select disks for ASM configuration. Unfortunately, I see the /dev/rdsk/c1t3d0s7 with status > MEMBER < and I can't select it for the new ASM installation.
I will really appreciate if anyone can let me know how to change status from MEMBER to CANDIDATE.
    Thank you for your time.
    DanielD

Overwrite the first several MB of the partition with /dev/zero.
    So, use this command:
    # dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/rdsk/c1t3d0s7 bs=1024k count=10
That clears out the ASM header on the disk so that it looks like a clean disk again.

  • Database is not created on ASM configured Disks

    hi,
I have installed Oracle 11gR2 Grid Infrastructure and Automatic Storage Management for a Standalone Server through "Grid" user. After then I install Oracle Database 11gR1 Software through "Oracle" User. There is no problem occure during the installation of these software. The OS is OEL-5.4. AND
ASM configured Disks are "DISK1, DISK2 AND DISK3" and the Group Name is "+DATA".
The Problem is when i want to create Database and chose ASM configured disk for Database storage, at the database creation process on 27% an error occur that is "ORA-03114 Not connected to Oracle". Sir but when i chose File System for Database Storage, Database created successfully.
Sir i am new in Oracle Grid Infrastructure and ASM please help me.

    Hi buddy,

  • Expand ASM Diskgroup on RAC 11.2 online

    Hi,
I am currently in search of an article or document which describes the following workflow:
Expand ASM Diskgroup on RAC 11.2 online:
Resize physical LUN (no Infos needed)
    Resize Multipath
    Resize Partition
    Resize ASM Disk
Resize ASM DiskGroup ( I dont know if this is necessary?)
It is an Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.5 with 11.2 Clusterware. We use ISCSI Disk, ASMLib and Multipath (Linux -> multipathd).
The main goal is to do that online.
Does anyone know of such an article, or else has other tips regarding this scenario?
    Kind Regards,

  • ASM install not RAC aware

    SPARC:
installed 11g clusterware using crs user, oinstall and dba group,
then install 11g ASM using oracle user, but it does not show RAC option.
ASM install not RAC aware if not use same user?
    Thanks.

I'm not sure if you're talking about creating an ASM instance? The ASM software install is the same as the Database install. Oracle recommends running ASM from a separate Home which would require a separate Oracle database install.

  • ASM Configurations

    Hi,
I am new to configuring ASM,
Can you tell me how to start from scratch like what kind of disks required. which raid level should be configured, which one is the task of sysadmin and which tasks will be performed by dba?
My operating system is solaris 9 x86 and database would be 10gR2.
We are going to deploy data warehouse environment.
alomost 100gb RAM is available (expectedly from 80gb to100gb ram).
please help me understanding the ASM configuration and disks knowledge along with RAID levels.
Note: we have 600GB hard disk (6 disks 100gb each).

  • Silent install- ASM Configuration Assistant fails

I am trying to do a silent install with response file. At the end of the install it says I need to run configToolAllCommands which I do but the ASM Configuration assistant fails. I assume I need to pass in asmsnmp password but how do I do that? I see I can specify ResponseFile=<fn> when I run configToolAllCommands but how do I set the asm passwords in a response file? I tried just creating a response file that included asmsnmpPassword=mypassword and sysAsmPassword=mypassword but it didn't like that. Anyone know how to pass in the password? I think it will set up the asmsnmp user in this configuration assistant? because that is one of my problems after the install completes I don't have that user set up. I need all of this to be automated.
    thanks for any ideas.

well I did not find any documentation on how to create a resposne file for the ConfigToolAllCommands- all I found using the -help option was that I could include a ResponseFile=<fn> parameter. so all I did was put 2 llines in the file sysAsmPassword=mypassword and asmsnmpPassword=pAssword. And that doesn't work...

  • Configure ASM Instance in RAC cluster - problem

    Linux RH4 with Oracle 11.1.0.6
I previously had ASM working in a RAC environment, but have uninstalled on all 3 nodes following Oracle guidelines.
When I attempt to re-configure ASM it states that an ASM instance is located in nodes 2 and 3. Previous ASM software has been removed, and there are no entries in the /etc/oratab files on any of the nodes.
How do I locate and then remove these instances on nodes 2 and 3
    Thanks

Steps in Note 311350.1 have been followed, and there are no occurances of ASM appearing in the crs_stat output. Also the fact that the ASM software has also been removed from all of the various, where are these ASM instances being started?
I am unable to proceed past the "Select Configuration Screen" which gives you the option to 1)Create Database, 2)Configure ASM or 3) Install Software only.
When I select option 2 and enter ASM SYS password, I get the error message that ASM instances are present in the other nodes.
Would appreciate any help in how I can progress past this stage.
    Thanks
