ASM disk added without scan on second node
Hi All ,
Oracle Version:11.2.0.3
I need one help for one issue with ASM disk addition.
It is a two node RAC and one disk group was filled.
One disk was available as UNUSED001 and so we renamed it ran scan disk and added the disk to the diskgroup on node1.
But , as we did not run the scan disk on second node , the name is still showing as UNUSED001 and assigned to diskgroup so showing as MEMBER.
Also, the renamed disk is also showing as MEMBER but not assigned with any diskgroup.
Usually, when this heppens we have to reboot the node to fix the issue , but would like to get idea if this can be fixed without bouncing nodes.
Hi ,
+ Probably that disk addition failed with ORA-15075 as same named device is not visible after renaming of disk.
As this validation takes place after writing disk header ,it is showing as MEMBER.
+ Get downtime of cluster on 2nd node and run scandisks on 2nd node.
+ Now renamed disk should be showing up on node 2.
+ if showing up ,then validate .
-- All expected diskgroups were mounted on both nodes or not
sql> select inst_id,name,state from gv$asm_diskgroup;
-- If mounted validate that renamed disk group_number and mount_status
sql> col path for a30
sql> select inst_id,group_number,path,mount_status from gv$asm_disk;
+ If group_number is 0 and mount_status is CLOSED ,then it is not part of any mounted diskgroup.
Add that disk again with force option in same diskgroup.
sql> alter diskgroup <diskgroup_name> add disk 'ORCL:<LABEL_NAME>' force;
And allow rebalance to complete.
Regards,
Aritra

Can anybody guide me about this..If my instance is down, and I deleted the disk physically then ? I am not asking about database level diskgroup deletion.
please can you tell me how can mirroring is specifed ?
First we dont have diskgroup concept at database level . If instance is down and you delete the disk then nothing will happen because rebalancing will happen internally in your ASM. Before oracle removing the disk it will rebalance the data on that disk to other existing disk before totally removing it.
Mirroring is specified at the time of diskgroup creation like "external redundency or normal redundency or high redundency"
CREATE DISKGROUP disk_group_1 NORMAL REDUNDANCY

Hi,
I have a 2-node RAC. I want to add a new diskgroup, to ASM.
At the first node, I run the CREATE DISKGROUP command. I though the disk group would appear at second node's ASM and I would only have to mount. But on the second node EM, the disk group does not appear in V$ASM_DISK and the ALTER DISKGROUP MOUNT command returns ORA-15063.
Do I have to create the disk at the second node too?
Edited by: user492400 on Mar 30, 2010 12:40 PMhow you created disks on node #1?
did you use oracleasm createdisk command?
run sudo /etc/init.d/oracleasm scandisk on node#1 then same command on node#2
then run /etc/init.d/oracleasm listdisks on both nodes and compare result.
if you see all disks correctly on both nodes, then connect to ASM on node#2 and run
ALTER DISKGROUP ALL MOUNT;
new diskgroup should be mounted. -

Thanks in advance for any information and helps,Hi,
I came across this error and I am about to start a fresh installation of the grid. (ealier one failed because it was unable to read the memory in rac2 )
Is there anything specific I can change before I start my installation.

DBCA did not see the ASM disk group in NODE 2 but see in NODE 1
Are there anyone who encountered creating a database using DBCA with ASM as file system?
Our issue before is in both nodes the DBCA did not see the ASM disk group.
But after setting the TNS_ADMIN in both nodes and running the DBCA as administrator in Node 1, the DBCA able to see now the ASM disk group. Unfortunately, in Node 2 it didn't work out?
So we didn't know why is it from Node 2, the DBCA still didn't see the ASM disk group?Since it is both the same.
Any ideas? Please advise.
For you information, we are using Windows 64-bit, Oracle 11g R2
Thank you in advance for those who will respond.

Share an ASM disk group among multiple nodes
According to Oracle documentation:
*“To share an ASM disk group among multiple nodes, you must install Oracle Cluster ware on all of the nodes, regardless of whether you install Oracle RAC on the nodes”.*
And if I understand it right to share the same ASM storage group from multiple nodes from separate RACs or multiple non-RAC nodes ASM instances in those nodes need to communicate to synchronize ASM related metadata using same technique like cache fusions.
My question is how this ASM communication take place among different ASM instances located in different RACs and standalone servers. Do we have to have some kind of Interconnect settings among the nodes?Hi,
ASM and database instances require shared access to the disks in a disk group. ASM instances manage the metadata of the disk group and provide file layout information to the database instances.
ASM instances can be clustered using Oracle Clusterware; there is one ASM instance for each cluster node. If there are several database instances for different databases on the same node, then the database instances share the same single ASM instance on that node.
If the ASM instance on a node fails, then all of the database instances on that node also fail. Unlike a file system failure, an ASM instance failure does not require restarting the operating system. In an Oracle RAC environment, the ASM and database instances on the surviving nodes automatically recover from an ASM instance failure on a node.

ASM disk busy 99% only on one cluster node
Hello,
We have a three node Oracle RAC cluster. Our dba(s) called us and said they are getting OEM critical alers for an asm disk on one node only. I checked and the SAN attached drive does not show the same high utilization on either of the other two nodes. I checked the hardware and it seems fine. If the issue was with the SAN attached disk, we would be seeing the same errors on all three nodes since they share the same disks. The system crashed last week(alert dump in the +asm directories), and at the disk has been busy ever since. I asked if the dba reviewed the ADDM reports and he said he had and that there were no suspicious looking entries that would lead us to the root cause based on those reports. CPU utilization is fine. I am not sure where to look at this point and any help pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated. They do use RMAN, could there be a backup running using those disks only on one node? Has anyone ever seen this before?
Thank you,

Reformatting ASM disks without ASM available
Hello Everyone,
In a test environment I recently built a single instance Oracle 11G database using ASM to manage database storage disks. The O/S is HP-UX v11.31 and the ASM disks are LUNs presented from a SAN. For a number of reasons I have had to rebuild this environment again from scratch, the O/S partition has been rebuilt and I have installed Oracle 11G again. However, when I now come to create & configure my ASM instance it does not find any candidate disks. I believe this is because those disks still have ASM formatting from the previous 'life' of the environment and the Diskgroups were not dropped , or the disks 'wiped' prior to rebuilding the O/S partition.
My problem is therefore - How can I 'reformat' the disks for reuse so that they will appear as candidates during ASM configuration, given the fact that I no longer have any ASM instance in existence. I'm guessing that the answer maybe to run some HP-UX O/S level commands to do this ?
Any advice or suggestion would be much appreciated !
Thanks,
ShaunHi,
Thanks very much for this. I've run the command against the affected SAN disks and it has worked. All disks now appear as candidates when I run ASM configuration through OUI.
Thanks again,
Shaun -

[oracle@rac2 grid]$ I'm confused :)
Edited by: Eren GULERYUZ on 06.Ara.2010 05:57Hi,
it looks like, that your "shared device" you are using is not really shared.
The second node does "create an ASM diskgroup" and create OCR and Voting disks. If this indeed would be a shared device, he should have recognized, that your disk is shared.
So as a result your VMware configuration must be wrong, and the disk you presented as shared disk is not really shared.
Which VMWare version did you use? It will not work correctly with the workstation or player edition, since shared disks are only really working with the server version.
If you indeed using the server, could you paste your vm configurations?
Furthermore I recommend using Virtual Box. There is a nice how-to:

Root.sh failed at second node OUL 6.3 Oracle GRID 11.2.0.3
Hi, im installing a two node cluster mounted on Oracle Linux 6.3 with Oracle DB 11.2.0.3, the installation went smooth up until the execution of the root.sh script on the second node.
THe script return this final lines:
CRS-4402: The CSS daemon was started in exclusive mode but found an active CSS daemon on node nodo1, number 1, and is terminating
An active cluster was found during exclusive startup, restarting to join the cluster
Start of resource "ora.crsd" failed
CRS-2800: Cannot start resource 'ora.asm' as it is already in the INTERMEDIATE state on server 'nodo2'
CRS-4000: Command Start failed, or completed with errors.

In $GRID_HOME/log/node2/alertnode.log It appears to be a Cluster Time Synchronization Service issue, (i didn't synchronyze the nodes..) however the CTSS is running in observer mode, wich i believe it shouldn't affect the installation process. After that i lost it...there's an entry CRS-5018 indicating that an unused HAIP route was removed... and then, out of the blue: CRS-5818:Aborted command 'start' for resource 'ora.asm'. Some clarification will be deeply apreciated.

Root.sh fails on second node
I already posted this issue on database installation forum, and was suggested to post it on this forum.
Here are the details.
I am running Linux 64bit on ESx clients. Installing Oracle 11gR2.
It passed all the per-requisite. Run root.sh on first node. It finished with no errorrs.
On second node I got the following:

If you need more info, let me know.Well, the error clearly indicates that a communication problem exists on the private interconnect.
Could this be a setting in ESX, which prevents some communication between the clients on the second network card? Any routing table in ESX not configured correctly?

If anyone needs more info please let me know.On all nodes,
1. Modify the /etc/sysconfig/oracleasm with:
ORACLEASM_SCANORDER="dm"
ORACLEASM_SCANEXCLUDE="sd"
2. restart the asmlib by :
# /etc/init.d/oracleasm restart
3. Run root.sh on the 2nd node

Timed out waiting for the CRS stack to start on Second node.
Hi,
I am trying to setup 2 node 11gR2 RAC in vmware. I face the Timed out waiting for the CRS stack to start error on second node while running root.sh.I checked the cluster log files located in /u01/app/11.2.0/grid/log/node1/alertnode2.log it shows as mentioned below.But when i logged into ASM instance and checked the diskgroup and it is in mount state on both nodes,So i am really confused why i ended up with error in 2nd node on running root.sh. Can anyone tell me how to correct this error or any other checking needs to be done?
