ASM Disks not appearing
I am installing Oracle RAC 10.2 on an EM64-T box, RedHat Linux 4, using a shared MSA1000 SAN for the shared storage.
I have installed CSS (and it is running correctly), and have downloaded and installed the ASM libraries and Oracle.
From the command line I can do an "oracleasm createdisk VOL1 /dev/sda2", then do a "listdisks" and see the device (VOL1) on BOTH nodes in my RAC cluster.
Using DBCA, however, when I try to manage ASM it does not show the device (VOL1). I have confirmed that my Discovery path is ORCL:*.
Any thoughts?
hi,
We face the same problem while setting up Oracle ASM on 10R2 RAC on RHEL4. you need to specify the disk path instead of string 'ORCL:'. specify string '/dev/oracleasm/disks/*' and then see, DBCA will show you all the ASM disks you have created.
cheers

Hi,
I am installing the Grid Infrastructure for a cluster (11.2). In the installer screen where an ASM disk group should be chosen, no disk appears.
But a disk appears if a execute "oracleasm listdisks" in the command line. Any idea?
The "oracleasm status" informs the disk is not mounted. Is that the problem?Hi David:

My Ipod 160GB when disconnected is showing without any files, but no room available. It appears in my 'Computer' screen as 'Removable Disk (though the icon is a little iPod). It does not show up in iTunes at all (I have the latest version).
When I right-click the icon on the 'Computer' screen it does run incredibly slowly. I was doing this to consider if I should try formatting it (only NTSF and exFAT formats were showing) but I wasn't certain if that would be a good idea.
I have thus far:
Hard Reset iPod
Verified the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver was installed correctly via Device Manager
Checked the device in 'Computer Management' > 'Disk Management - showing as a RAW file with only format option as exFAT or NTSF
Ran iPod in Diagnostic Boot Mode - IO > HardDrive > HDSMARTData* - stats revealed 'Error' (did this twice to confirm error). Reset iPod from here.
After this it actually came up in iTunes but said it needed to be restored - ran Restore iPod. Error message said 'iPod cannot be restored. Uknown error occoured (1415).
Tried Solution 1 (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1539) - Reregistering the .dll files. Was unable to complete step 11 as the iPod did not appear in iTunes.
Verified that Apple Mobile Device Manager was installed.
Restarted the Apple Mobile Device Service.
Checked for third party conflicts - couldn't find any.
Changed the drive letter and restarted the computer.
Put into disk mode - unsure what that achieves.
Downloaded the HP USB with no luck running the program. I believe that Windows Vista doesn't allow formatting drives to FAT32 at all, and even previous editions of Windows wouldn't allow formatting above 32GB so certainly no suitable for me. If I got hold of a mac computer - could I format on that? Or is there a FAT32 Formatter that works for 160GB?
So I am at a bit of a frustrated loss. If you have any suggestions or know what I should do - I am all ears or eyes as it were. I will be on standby to give you more information if required.
Thanks,

Photos on shared disk not appearing in catalog
Hi, I recently went bi-platform (IMac and Windows computers being used). I have a home network. My Lightroom cat and all my images originally resided on my Windows computer's harddrives (four on board). After purchasing the IMac, I installed Lightroom on it and copied my cat files to it as well. All my photos continue to reside on my Windows computer's four internal harddrives so I turned on Sharing on the Windows computer for a test drive. (Yep, the photos are backed up to external drives). Anyway, when I launched my cat on the IMac in Lightroom, the thumbs and corresponding data appear just fine but when I point the thumb to the photo file on the shared harddrive, the thumb in the catalog disappears. Major bummer! Fortunately, I haven't done a bulk "find" otherwise I would have lost the entire catalog contents.
Will Lightroom not work with photos stored on shared internal harddrives via home network?? I have read that it does work with photos stored on external harddrives but I would prefer to keep my photos on the four internal harddrives.
Thanks for any help.
DebPS: I'm using Lightroom 3.5 and the IMac has OS Lion. Windows computer is running XP.

Asm disks not showning up when clusterware running
On rhel 4 (centos)
I installed/configured asm
[root@green rc5.d]# ./S50oracleasm status
Checking if ASM is loaded: [ OK ]
Checking if /dev/oracleasm is mounted: [ OK ]
[root@green rc5.d]# ./S50oracleasm listdisks
D1
D2
D3
D4
D5
D6
then installed clusterware 10.2.01
then installed 10G 10.2.01 (software only)
when I try to create a asm dg via dbca the D1 -> D6 dont show up . changing the discovery path from blank to 'ORCL:' didn't help
I had previously done this prior to installing clusterware and had no problem .
any thoughts ?after changing the disk discover path back and forth between ORCL: and ' ' it started to work . :< (

Problem creating asm disk groups after installation.
I just completed the grid install successfully on Oracle Linux:
Candidate ASM disks not showing up in 11.2 installer (Oracle Linux)
Thanks for the help.
I am running into the same type of issue where I can't see the asm disks like I ran ran into during the install.
When I run asmca to create the addditional disk groups I don't see the two asmlib volumes.
I tried changing the disk discovery path from the default and I still can't see the disks.
$ /usr/sbin/oracleasm listdisks

Do the block devices need to be owned by grid?

$ ls -l /dev/sde
brw-r----- 1 root disk 8, 64 Aug 2 15:21 /dev/sde
How can the installer work fine and see the disks and then asmca can't see the disks?
It must be a permissions issue. How can I see what the error is that is preventing the disks from showing up?$ cd /dev/oracleasm

DBCA Does Not Display ASM Disk Groups In 11.2.0.4
DBCA trying to create a database with a different user oracle than grid user. installed Grid infrastructure with user grid, and I was trying to create a database with user oracle (who’s the owner of oracle rdbms). 5.Checked Metalink apparently here is the answer. There should be nothing wrong if you follow the above four(4)
procedures and the output is good. Problem is when you click on ASM, click on OMF, then you have to click
on the open pane several times before the window with Disk Groups appears. Took 4 secs for it to appear.
It will not be immediate. -
Asm candidate disk not listed in the OUI grid infrastructure
I am installing 11g R2 two node RAC on OEL 5. 4.and openfiler
In the middle of the GRID infrastructure installation,at the window "Create ASM Disks", the disks are not listed.
I have installed and configured Asm lib through configure command
I was able to list the disks with the below commands
1./etc/init.d/oracleasm listdisks it was listing
CRSVOL1

FRAVOL1
2. /etc/init.d/oracleasm-discover ORCL:*
i was able to discover the disks
I had change the Discovery path in the "Create ASM Disks" to ORCL:* still it is not appearing
Any help is appreciated.
DaveHi,
You can change Discovery Path of ASM to : /dev/oracleasm/disks/*
It's same result and Oracle recommend do that in case of discover (ORCL:*) not working.

Ipod 160g does not appear on itunes but it appears on windows when in disk mode
my ipod 160 g does not appear in itune (disk mode or not) but it appears in windows as IPOD (F:) only when it's in disk mode. I tried reseting it by holding the menu and center button it stop but then it goes back to the apple logo screen and stay on untill the battery dies and nothing else happens how can I reset it to is factory settings?
When you connect it in Disk Mode, leave it charging the iPod Battery till Full Charge.
In the meantime, 30 minutes or so into the charging, ( I just want the Ipod to have sufficient power for any harddisk Operation)
go to Window Explorer (or My Computer),
Select the Ipod, right click properties, ->tools->error checking->Check Now->fix error
After the error fixing (may take a while but then you still have to wait till the battery charging is complete.)
Disconnect the iPod from the PC.
Antivirus has a tendency to freeze Itunes sync Operation with Ipod Classic, causing a timeout, which corrupt your Ipod filesystem, so when iTunes cant read the iPod, it is pointing to this problem. Other causes is when your iPod hardisk is dying, or your battery is dying causing hardisk crashes.
My suggestion.
Connect your Ipod to the PC and run chkdsk, to fix any iPod diskerror, then disconnect it, after chkdsk complete. - Done above
Disconnect your PC from Internet. (just to make sure no nasties creep into your system while you syncing.
Stop the Antivirus program
Connect your Ipod to the PC
When Itunes Open up, Restore your iPod please, this is for iTunes to map correctly, to fix the corrupted filesystem.
When Restore complete, eject the iPod and reconnect again.
Sync your ipod, preferably manually Manage in small batches and disconnect after every batch, to check that all is well, since you got such a huge library.
When all sync is complete, and iPod disconnected, start back your Antivirus and connect back the Internet.
Good Luck! and have a Nice Day! -
I have a 1TB WD external hard disk, which suddenly cannot be detected in my system. When i connect the hardisk to the macbook, the disk appears and immediately disconnects with the message "Disk not properly ejected". Any advice ?
verify on another Mac if the same
WD is having issues with mavericks as you can see on the WD forum, did you install any WD software (never do that) when you connected the drive for the first time?
possible issue is a dead SATA bridge card or the new WD firmware w/ Mavericks.
SATA card issue
Your dead external hard drive is likely fine! Great hope for your 'faulty' external HD

verify on another Mac if all possible -
Time Machine appears to be doing back-ups, but they do not appear on the external hard drive. The last one I can find is June 30. I did a utility scan of the hard drive disk and it is fine. What do I do?
Click the Time Machine icon in the menu bar. The time of the last backup is shown in the drop down.

Iomega external hard drive not appearing in Disk Utility
I have a MacBook Pro (from 2011) and I'm running OS X 10.9.5. I have an old Iomega external hard drive. I'm not certain but this thing might be about 3-4 years old? When I connect the drive to my MBP, it shows up in Finder under Devices. But what appears is the Windows disk utility that is pre-loaded on the drive. The actual drive does not appear and I can't move files onto it in Finder.
When I go into Disk Utility and try to format the drive for Mac use, it doesn't appear.
Is there anything I can do or am I stuck with this old drive that doesn't work with Macs?Try following tips.
USB and FireWire Quick Assist - Apple Support -
I'm facing a bit of a problem.
Any folder I copy from my Macbook Pro to my External Hard Disk does NOT appear on any other device that I connect the Hard Disk to (TV, PC, etc).
The Hard disk format is "MS-DOS (FAT)".
The folders that are copied from Macbook appear when I connect the Hard Disk to my Macbook only, yet, the folders that I copy from a PC to the Hard Disk appear on Macbook, PC, and TV and are also available from editing from both Mac and PC.
I was advised to install "Paragon" software and I did but I'm not sure how to use it to convert the folders on the hard drive to any format that can be read on other drives or devices (NTFS or otherwise).
I'd appreciate some help. Thank you.Hi Simon. How is it formatted, FAT or NTFS?
I only ask as OSX will only read NTFS partitions unless you install an App such as Paragon NTFS or Tuxera NTFS. -
New Hard disk is not appearing in the System Profiler
I am doing a fresh install using my ligitimate Snow Leopard DVD on my USB disk.
My SSD is not appearing in the System Profiler under Hardware>ATA
or under Hardware>Serial-ATA
It is a PATA device as was the original disk I've replaced.
So I have NO disk to install onto.
Any ideas what the problem could be?
===
History
My hard disk died, and I am replacing it with an SSD.
I bought a Mach Xtreme Technology Pata 1.8" SSD (Part no MXSSD1MNANOZ-120G)
(I can send this back if I have to)
The SSD is unusual in that it has to be a 1.8" size with a ZIF PATA connector.
The SSD is preformatted (but not necessarily to Apple formatting).
With the SSD the same way around to the original 80GB HDD, Pin 1 of the new SSD is towards the back of the computer.
I cannot find any information as to which Pin on the original HDD is Pin 1.
I used this tutorial to dismantle and reassemble: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnV7mHS7Qi8
I've double checked the connections inside. Thanks, this was the answer.
The connector on the SSD I used was indeed arranged reverse to the original Apple Drive. So it looked different to all the tutorials.
I knew where Pin 1 was on the new SSD but could not see it on the old drive.
The original 80GB hard disk had Pin 1 is towards the middle of the computer.
Flipping the SSD over meant it was about 3mm closer to the back, which made the zif ribbon buckle. So I had to cut away some of the rubber shock absorber to the back, and use tape. The SSD should not need the shock absorber as it is not mechanical/vibrating.
It is now working well.
(Although I now have a different problem restoring from the Time Machine. ) -
