ASM Even Read

Hi,
My understanding is that in Normal/High redundancy disk groups the Even Read feature ensures that a new I/O request is sent to a disk with the least amount of outstanding I/Os.
But is the amount of outstanding I/Os calculated at each ASM instance separately or across all ASM instances collectively?
This would make difference in some configurations with asymmetric access to storage between nodes where storage network is the bottleneck and not the disks (and where Preferred Read cannot be fully used).

> Even Read helps in scenarios when distribution of primary copies across failure groups becomes uneven, and as a result distribution of read I/O would becomes uneven too.
An example:
One disk fails, now its partner disks have to serve reads from the secondary extents that had primary copies on the failed disks. But they also have to serve reads from their own primary extents. So, some disks may become more loaded than some other disks. Even Read eliminates this imbalance by keeping stats of how many I/Os are served by each disk.
Again, if someone has a more accurate description please share.

I have a photo of an ice surface and another of a flower. Now I want to create a merged photo with the flower lying under the ice. I understand that I shall use the function "Layer" and have even read in the manual and looked on a video, but that information is not sufficiently detailed for me. I have tried several options, but I come now way. Generally it seems that your information is only for the ones who can, not for the people who can´t although it is we who really need to learn. Please give me a step by step (click by click) information on how I can get the ice above the flower and then make the ice partly transparent so the flower is seen underneath. Please send me an e-mail Erik Solbu [email protected]

Open a new document big enough for your image. Then additional open your ice and flower image as well. Copy each and paste it into your blank document. They will be placed on their own separate layers.
Make sure in your layers panel. (Bottom right) the ice is above the flower, by dragging it in place. In that same layers panel click the ice layer to select in and find the opacity meter above. Drag to the left until you get the effect you desire.

    Hi,
What is the exact name of the desktop app you have?  Is it "Acrobat Reader DC", "Acrobat Pro DC" or "Acrobat Standard DC"?
(Previously, your question was posted to the wrong forum - the Reader/Acrobat DC mobile forum.)
If you have the paid product ("Acrobat Pro DC" or "Acrobat Standard DC"), you can contact Adobe Customer Care.

  • Email vanishes before I can even read it...

    I have a serious problem. Been on-going and I haven't found a solution yet.
Incoming email that is vanishing before I can even read it.
Numerous times oI've noticed incoming email notifications on on the pop up notification window on the upper righthand of the screen. I can see who the email is from and the first sentence or so.
But when I go to Apple Mail the email(s) aren't there.
I've checked the junk folder, trash folder even my mailbox on icloud and no email. As if it never happened.
For example I just paid my credit card bill online. I saw an immediate Apple Mail notification from my CC company confirming payment. But when I check Apple Mail the email never made it to my box. Not a sign of it - anywhere.
I go to Apple mail -- no email.
I'm having the same problem with several other incoming accounts. The emails simply refuse to show up in Apple Mail.
Is this a known issue? It's also happening across my synced computers and the ipad. None of them show certain emails showing up.
I use Spam Sieve to manage spam. But it doesn't seem to matter if I uninstall it or if its running or not.
It caused a serious problem a while back. A business associate claimed he had emailed me a dozen times about a project. I would check - no emails anyhere. I finally had him do a test. I would be on the phone and he would push send. I would see the notification come up showing it had arrived. But nothing in Apple Mail. It's driving me crazy. I have no idea how many email addresses are affected.

Here is a webpage with pictures that show what Carolyn is takling about.  I usually try the envelope rebuild first since it doesn't download my entire 12GB mailbox again.

  • Since downloading Mountain Lion, I keep getting this pop up notification but it disappears to quick for me to even read the first letter. How can I disable this, and what is going on??

I got mountian lion for my macbook pro when it came out and since then, a mac notification pops up every once in a while and it just flashes on the screen real quick and then goes away. I can't even read the first letter so I don't know what it's saying or how I should fix this/disable it. Any ideas??

I haven't figured out what caused it, but I seem to have fixed it by doing a simple back up and restore to factory settings than set up with the back up. Everything is working fine now. I would recommend trying that if you haven't already.

  • My iTunes wont sync to my iPhone its not even reading it like I have it hooked up to my computer plz help

My iTunes won't sync to my iPhone its not even reading it like I have it hooked up to my computer

    Hey there 2Chainz,
It sounds like youre being prompted that there is not enough space. I would use the following article to help resolve the issue named:
iOS: "Not enough free space" alert when trying to sync
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1503
Try disconnecting and reconnecting your device, then syncing again to solve this issue.
Orphaned files may remain on your iOS device if it is physically disconnected while syncing music, podcasts, videos, or photos. This can prevent iTunes from syncing the iOS device on subsequent sync sessions. When this happens, the Capacity indicator in iTunes may report a large amount of "Other" disk usage for the iOS device. To resolve this issue:
Turn off the music or photo sync option in iTunes for the device.
Click Apply to sync the changes to the device.
Turn the music and photo sync options for the device on again.
Click Apply again to try to sync the device to iTunes.
If the 'Not enough free space' alert appears, continue to step 5.
Turn off the automatic syncing functions for the iOS device. To do this:
Select the iOS device from the iTunes window and click the Summary tab.
Deselect "Automatically sync when this device is connected" and select the "Sync only checked songs and videos" checkbox.
Click Apply to sync the changes to the device.
Reduce the amount of data that is being synced to the device and resync the device. For example, if syncing your Music library exceeds the memory capacity of the device, choose "Selected playlists" to transfer rather than "All songs and playlists" under the Music tab in iTunes.
If the 'Not enough free space' alert appears, continue to step 6.
    Restore using iTunes.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Regards,
    Sterling

  • Since upgrading to Snow Leopard from V10.4.8 My copy of Open office won't load.  I've downloaded the latest version but it still responds with a "time out" message.  Anyone know waht's up and what I can do about it.  I can't even read my old files.

Since upgrading the OS on my MacBook to Snow Leopard my open office suite has died.  All the old files are still on the HDD, but even "finding" them doesn't help as they are opened, unhelpfully, in Text Edit, which loses some of the formatting.  I tried downloading the latest edition of Open Office, but it has made no difference.  Any suggestions?  Apple OS support has no solution to offer.

Found this, which might provide a clue:
I have had problems with 3.1 after installing Snow Leopard, with files created in MS Word - they come up with the text invisible (as though it's white, but changing the text colour doesn't help - by highlighting I can tell that the paragraphs are where they should be).
I upgraded to 3.1.1 but that did not solve the problem...
UPDATE: I found out the problem, it was nothing to do with Open Office, but rather the way Snow Leopard handles fonts. I went into the Font Book and found that a number of common fonts are now listed both in the "User" and "Computer" collections. I deleted the duplicate ones from "User" and now all works perfectly.

  • I have tried everything on Windows ME...can't update; usb won't even read!

Can anyone help me? I have an apple icon that appears and won't go away. My IPOD mini used to work just fine up until 2 days ago. I have tried all the suggestions listed on this site that I have found and my computer won't download updater nor will it read my IPOD via USB!! It doesn't even recognize that it's plugged in. I purchased this IPOD in November 05 and can't believe that it's malfunctioning already!!! What the heck!!! I have no idea what to do!! It is fully charged....I have used the firewire as well as the USB...nothing happens. When I try to download UPDATER FOR WINDOWS ME...I still get a message stating that I must update to Windows XP! Do I have to get a new program in order for this thing to work!!???

Are you referring to this article?
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302091
If so, it refers to first generation regular sized iPods and not the iPod mini. Apple hasn't provided support for Windows ME for a long while now, and never for the iPod mini.
Clicking on the link in that article will take you to the updater download page but this is for the latest updater, and is no use to you. Apple do not host older updaters.
"AM I BEING TOLD THAT THE ONLY WAY TO UPDATE/DOWNLOAD or EVEN USE THIS IPOD IS TO HAVE THE WINDOWS XP PROGRAM???? THIS IS INSANE!!"
Yes, you are. The system requirements for the mini (on Windows) are for 2000 with SP4, or XP with SP2. Clearly stated on the box, and in the iPod tech specs.
Fact is, you bought an iPod not designed to work on Windows ME (and neither will iTunes), so yes, that is insane.
Here's a link to iPod Lounge, where it tells how to set up an iPod using ME. It's a regular iPod though, not a mini.

  • Installing Photoshop CS1 on Vista, cant even read disk

I just got a Vista machine and have installed all my CS3 stuff, MS Office, and other various things with no problems. When I got to Photoshop CS1, It doesnt even autostart. When I click on the drive, it says to insert a CD and ejects the tray. Is this a CS1/Vista glitch and if so, is there a fix somewhere? Not seeing any message about it in the patches section

    >Robert...is that really true???
    yes, it's true.
    >Even if it is, shouldnt Vista atleast be able to read the files on the CD?
yes it should. many people report running photoshop as far back as 7 on vista (sometimes with minor issues). but cs1 by almost all accounts should run fine. it definately SHOULD be able to read the disk.
    > but the disk works fine on the other computers which have XP
if you read it on another system, do what i said and copy the photoshop folder off the disk to a network share and install from there.
    >i just took the computer out of the box tonite so I know the drive isnt bad.
no guarantee. cables often work loose during shipping. any number of things could go wrong. in fact, i'd say the failure rate on almost all system components is GREATER on a new system than on a system that's been running fine for at least a couple of months.

  • How to get asm diskgroups read/writes per hour or day

    Hi ,
we have 2 production databases sitting on same server (2 node RAC) and using the same ASM disk groups.
we have been having issues since past 2 days where we see lot of I/O from one of the dabase .
I was asked to provide the disk I/O stats from past 1 week.
wondering how can I get this information either from v$asm_disk_iostat (which gives overall usage but no timestamp) or from grid control (like host disk I/O usage )

    Try this :
    ASMCMD> iostat -t -G diskgroup 5
In 11G release 2 ASMCMD has a iostat feature that allows you to list the reads and writes per disk (either as I/O operation or bytes)
iostat [-et][--io] [--suppressheader] [--region] [-G diskgroup] [interval]-e display error statistics (write/read)
-t display time statistics giving the total I/O time in hundredths of a second (requires TIMED_STATISTICS to be true)
    -G diskgroup
interval – repeat the command every X seconds

  • My iMac won't mount or even read my NTFS external hard drive

I have a new model iMac running 10.9.4
I have a 4TB usb 3.0 external Seagate hard drive formatted in NTFS.
I cannot get the iMac to recognize it.
    I've tried:
    - mounting via disk utility: "the disk could not be mounted. try running first aid on the disk and then retry mounting" I haven't tried first aid because I don't want to erase or change anything on the hard drive. It also said I could try verifying the disc but haven't done that for same reasons. It works perfectly fine on my 2009 iMac.
    - Finder preferences - external discs is checked
    - I installed an app called NTFS-3G which was recommended along with MacFUSE 2.0 but that didn't seem to do anything
The only place I can see my hard drive is in disk utility, but it is grayed out.
Any help would be much appreciated.

You must remove the "NTFS-3g" software.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

  • When I reboot from Arch, my laptop won't even read its bios anymore...

    Hello All,
I have the weirdest problem on my Asus A6T that I have seen in a long time...
Last Sunday, I rebooted my laptop using the "reboot" function in Arch. I never ever use reboot but for once I did.
My laptop did log out but when it should have booted again, even the bios did not start. The screen did not turn on, the HDD did not start to spin up.
As my laptop was hot before the reboot, I thought that my motherboard (or something hardware) died as this laptop had its motherboard and LCD screen changed 1month ago... I just thought here we go again...
I reset the bios, and did all the master reset possible, changes the RAMs, tried to boot without HDD, I tried anything I could think of to troubleshoot my laptop... I decided to let it on the side for 4 days and to not try to boot it again. Before trying after 4 days, I re-did the bios reset, etc. and then it booted as if nothing never happened.
So I tried to reboot the laptop again to see what would happen and guess what... same situation... the BIOS do not boot anymore, etc. I will let it on the side for few days and I bet that my laptop will be fully functional again but does someone have a clue of what could be happening there?
I have had several laptops and desktops over the last 15 years or so and I cannot recall such weird behaviour. How come a reboot *kill*/*freeze* a motherboard to prevent it from booting?
    Anyone?
    Thanks in advance.
    Ludo

My HP 8220 did not reboot correctly unless I added reboot=b to the grub command line. But without it I never had an unusable machine for days, I only had to turn it off the hard way by pressing the power button for a few seconds and on the next press it would come on again cleanly, your machine behaves very strange indeed.
    Bye, signorRossi.

  • Superdrive accepts DVDs but wont even read CDs?

I'm new to Mac's. Just bought it 2 days ago. It will show DVDs but when i put a CD (blank or even from the store) it just whirls it around for like 10secs then spits it out. It doesn't even show it on the desktop. Someone please help me (and explain with detail I'm new)

In the System Preference panels, there is one named CDs & DVDs
and it is possible the computer has been set to Ignore or eject blank
media of this type; since that option exists in this control panel.
System Preferences should be available in the menu beneath the
Blue Apple, and also in the Dock.
    {PS: Where did you get a 'new iMac G5' in these days of Intel® iMacs?}
    Good luck & happy computing!
