ASM Failgroup best configuration?

Hi experts,
I have a quick question,
If you create a normal redundancy diskgroup through asmca in 11gR2, and choose 4 disks, it will create the diskgroup with failgroup to its own disk.
But in documentation example, we create a diskgroup with specify the failgroup to one or more disks.
my question is what is the best option for specifying failgroup? should it be 1 failgroup for each disk (I don't see why the failgroup is its own disk?) ? or should 1 failgroup consists multiple disk?
Hope you understand my rubbish question
Tx

Hi,
my question is what is the best option for specifying failgroup? should it be 1 failgroup for each disk (I don't see why the failgroup is its own disk?) ? or should 1 failgroup consists multiple disk?Choosing the number of failure groups to create depends on the types of failures that must be tolerated without data loss. For small numbers of disks, such as fewer than 20, it is usually best to use the default failure group creation that puts every disk in its own failure group.
Using the default failure group creation for small numbers of disks is also applicable for large numbers of disks where your main concern is disk failure. For example, a disk group might be configured from several small modular disk arrays. If the system must continue operating when an entire modular array fails, then a failure group should consist of all of the disks in one module. If one module fails, then all of the data on that module is relocated to other modules to restore redundancy. Disks should be placed in the same failure group if they depend on a common piece of hardware whose failure must be tolerated with no loss of availability.
I don't see why the failgroup is its own disk? - -AddFor me it's the opposite. You will take advantages putting disk on same failure group only when you use two or more Storages System, or have common point of failure (like disks sharing the same SCSI controller). If you have no reason to use same failure group, I recommend you puts every disk in its own failure group.
PS: A simultaneous failure can occur if there is a failure of a piece of hardware used by multiple failure groups. This type of failure usually forces a dismount of the disk group if all disks are unavailable.

  • Oracle 10g ASM and RAC configuration

    Hi all,
I want to ask to everybody something about Oracle 10g RAC and ASm configuration. We plan to migrate to Oracle 10g from 9i, and we will begin configuring oracle but we have to decide which configuration are the best.
    Our materials are bellow:
    Hardware: RP 3440 (HP)
    OS : HPUX 11i Ver 1
Storage: EVA 4000 (eva disk group)
    The problem is:
Our supplier recommand us to use HP serviguard + HP serviceguard extension for RAC+ RAc and Raw device as configuration.
But we want to use Oracekl Clusterware + RAC + ASM
My question is if anybody know what is the best configuration, we want to use ASm.
    Can HP serviguard use ASM.
Some documentations or link explain oracle RAC and ASM configuration will be appreciate.
    Thanks for your help.
    Regards.

    Hi,
I want to use RAC for clustering. My shared disk is a NetApp Filer FS250 that can only be mounted throught NFS. RAW devices have to be excluded, alsi OCFS i think works similar to raw devices and need to see phisical disk to create partition. ASM instead can work on an NFS mount?

  • MacBook Pro for Logic?  Best configuration?

    Hi everyone,
Thanks in advance for any thoughts about this.
I’m ready to upgrade my 7-year-old PowerBook G4 (which has served me so very well) to something more current. Logic Pro will be a primary use of the new Mac. With my understanding of ports and busses and the requirements of a DAW, I’m wondering about best configurations for a Mac DAW.
I generally record one, two or maybe three audio tracks at once, then add a bunch of software instruments (drums/percussion, strings, horns, pads, etc.) to craft a song. It would be nice, though, to have the possibility of recording a live drum kit or even a live band (so up to 16 tracks at once).
Aside from CPU speed, number of cores, memory, etc., my understanding is that there are two critical pieces of technology required for a well performing DAW. First is an audio interface. Second is fast storage for reading/writing audio files.
My preference is to upgrade to another Mac laptop and I’m thinking about the latest i7 MacBook Pro, 15”. I don’t want the 17” because it’s too big and heavy and I’ll be using an external monitor most of the time. (Still would like the portability of a laptop, so would rather not go with an iMac or Mac Pro.)
My concern is that the 15” MBP does not have the ExpressCard/34 slot. Without this slot there’s only one USB buss and one Firewire buss to connect a hard drive and audio interface. So either of these devices would be limited by the maximum speed of USB 2. If the 15” had an ExpressCard/34 slot, I would put a Firewire audio interface on the FW port, then buy either a FW 800 or USB 3 ExpressCard and attach an external drive to it.
So my first question is: given only FW 800 and USB 2, what would be the capabilities of audio recording on a latest i7 MBP? Would you attach an audio interface to FW 800 and an external drive to USB 2, or the other way around? Most FW audio interfaces I’ve seen support only FW 400, so would it make more sense to attach an audio interface to USB 2 and a FW 800 drive to FW 800?
Whichever the best option, does anyone have a rough sense for how many audio tracks could be recorded and played back with an optimally configured i7 MBP?
Another question: Is it possible to remove the DVD drive of a MBP and replace it with a hard drive? If so, would the buss be capable of FW 800 speeds? (I’m assuming the DVD drive connection to the MBP is an independent buss not to be affected by other devices.) I guess a FW 800 controller of some sort would be necessary? If this is an option, then one could have two independent busses for storage access and audio interface, both functioning at FW 800 speeds?
Last question: Would using a SSD as either the internal drive or an external be particularly helpful in this situation?
I hope this all makes sense. I’ve used a Yamaha AW4416 for recording for years and I’m a little queasy about switching to a DAW because of potential latency and performance issues. One option would be to sync my AW4416 to Logic Pro, use the AW4416 for recording tracks, then transfer the audio files to the Mac for mixing with Logic Pro.
Many thanks for any opinions, feedback. Very much appreciated.
    Tim

Phew - long post! Let me try and find your questions...
    I would go: FW800 -> FW800 Drive -> FW400 Audio interface.
Whichever the best option, does anyone have a rough sense for how many audio tracks could be recorded and played back with an optimally configured i7 MBP?
It all depends on what a track is. There is a different between one 16/44 audio track on it's own, a 24/96 audio track loaded with plugins, and a heavy software instrument track with high polyphony and loads of plugins.
In terms of raw tracks, you can get way more than you will practically need. Yes, they shouldn't have dropped eSata (I'm keeping my older MBP for this reason - I can connect eSata drives or my UAD2 depending on my needs)
Another question: Is it possible to remove the DVD drive of a MBP and replace it with a hard drive?
Yes, but it may void your warranty, depending on how you do it.
If so, would the buss be capable of FW 800 speeds?
Internal drives are SATA, much faster than FW800 in general. Throughput mostly depends on drive speed and performance, more than any bus speed limitations.
(I’m assuming the DVD drive connection to the MBP is an independent buss not to be affected by other devices.)
Not sure on that. Optical media are very slow devices anyway...
I guess a FW 800 controller of some sort would be necessary?
Internal drives have nothing at all to do with FW.
If this is an option, then one could have two independent busses for storage access and audio interface, both functioning at FW 800 speeds?
To be honest, unless you are planning massive projects, you'll be fine with an external FW800 drive. If you are planning on doing large projects that one FW800 can't cope with, then you shouldn't be looking at a laptop, you should be looking at a Mac Pro.
I think you're probably worrying too much - a well specced MBP sensibly configured is a very capable machine.
Last question: Would using a SSD as either the internal drive or an external be particularly helpful in this situation?
I'm still dubious to how SSD's will hold up in the long run - they haven't been around very long, and I'm concerned about the limited lifespans (maximum number of writes etc). I wouldn't go there personally, not yet.
Once you're comfortable with Logic, you won't go back, I'm reasonably sure of that...

  • Best Configuration for Laptop

I just purchased, and upgraded, a laptop that has:
GTX 470 (3 GB dedicated video)
    24 GB DDR3 RAM
120 GB primary internal SSD (C Drive) (up to 550MB/s read, up to 500MB/s Write)
480 GB second internal SSD (D Drive) (up to 540MB/s read, up to 460MB/s write)
    i7 processor
I shoot with 3 Sony HDR CX550V's. They of course compress to H.264...
So, what is the best way to setup this laptop? Basically, I installed the OS and software on the primary drive. Then I opened up premiere and created a blank project and setup "Media" and "media cache" under project settings to store in a folder on the D drive. I assume I don't want anything on the primary drive, no cache, no renders, just keep it clean.
But the C drive is faster and I would like your professional, experience opinion as to how to best configure this. Should I render out to the C since it has faster write? Should I store cache on C in a folder that I clean out every now and then? Data files on D? etc...
This laptop has a thunderbolt port too, and 4 USB3.0, it's an Asus laptop. I have an external drive, but it's RDD, 7200 RPM's. I could get an external SSD but for the most part I don't want to use an external drive in my workflow. However, for bigger projects if there's a major advantage I may need or at least want to do that. So, suggestions for this scenario would be appreciated too, but mostly curious about the best way to deal with my internal drives. I am curious if there would be a big difference expected with an external drive(s) in the mix...

Also, please be specific, like where to put what:
    Project (premiere project files)
    Scratch (video/audio previews)
Source files, my H.264 files that is)
    Exports (Renders)
"Media Cache Files" and "Media Cache Database" under preferences/media
And anything else specific that would be helpful to know.
    Thanks!

  • Best configuration for maximum WiFi speed?

Hello, I am trying to configure my network for the best WiFi speed. I have a Comcast/Xfiinity Modem/ Wireless Router (SMCD3GNV) with speed of 50 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up (acutally 87 down and 11.5 up last time tested) and 3 Airport Extremes, and a 16 port GB switch.  I am really confused about what should be plugged in to what and how to set up the Airport extemes for best WiFi speed for laptops, iphones and iPads etc. . I have a large house and want the WiFi to be available everywhere. Shoud I plug the Modem/Router and the first Airport extreme into the switch and then set up the other 2 Airport extremes as extended networks, or should I plug all the Airports into the switch, or should I plug just the first Airport into the switch and then connected the other 2 Airports into the 1st?  Like I said I am really confused. Any help you can offer would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Vic

For the best configuration for maximum WiFi speed, connect all your Extremes to the switch.
The effective range of your wireless network will be a function of the distances the Extremes are from one another. Each will be limited by Ethernet specification to a maximum distance 100m from the switch or adjacent Extreme.

  • Best configuration of TimesTen

What is the best configuration of TimesTen database on Windows 2008 64 bit OS,how much RAM(Min & Max) is needed.
    Thanks!

It's not possible to make an accurate estimation based on just that. To get an accurate estimation you need to create the relevant tables/cache groups/indexes in TimesTen and then use the ttSize utility (part of TimesTen) along with expected maximum rowcounts to estimate the memory needed. And you need to account also for LogBufMB and TempSize.
In general, data requires more space in TimesTen compared to Oracle DB due to different storage formats.

Ultimately, I guess you have to give the client what they want.  But it is your job to advise, not just roll over without question.  Ask them why they are specifying 32-bit.  Explain to them that you cannot even buy 32-bit hardware.
Why not windows ..? we need to strict to clients requirement right,
See my previous comment regarding advising and explaining.
if we use Linux or Unix do we gain more advantage...?
Besides the advantage of a more robust OS?
Besides the advantage of an OS for which the purchase/license cost is zero, and for which a support/service contract (if needed at all) costs less than the CEO will spend for lunch in a week?  (Versus Windows server purchase price of over US$1000 and annual maintenance of ???)

I will be buying an IMac 27 inch in December. What is the best configuration for photo and possibly video processing.Does one need a Mac Pro? Dream machine!

Just to explain what I just wrote to Laundry Bleach:
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac?
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3673
    UPDATE & ADDENDUM:
But even though you can still buy iLife 11 that includes iDVD 7 from Amazon, Apple now make it difficult to install:
Poster jhb21939 posted this in another thread:
“when I attempted to load iDVD into a new iMac. A notice came up on the screen stating that the 'Authorisation Licence' had expired on 25 March this year (2012).
I contacted the Apple support team and eventually, I was told that the Licence had been withdrawn and could no longer be used.”
In other words Apple are now so adamant that we don’t use iDVD that they have tried to make it impossible to install.
In response, Old Toad posted this solution:
“You can still use it one all of your Macs.  If you get an invalid certificate message just set your Mac's clock to sometime before early 2011 and run the installer.  After you're done reset the time back to the correct time.” He added this comment:
“It began after iDVD and iWeb were discontued and they were dropped from the Apple Store. All I can think of is the certificate was set to expire after a certain time period after the intitial iLife disc was released.
I've been able to use the installer even without setting back the date.  I just clicked on the Continue button and it would work as expected.  For some it would not continue unless the date was set back.”
The latest anorexic iMacs just announced do not even include a CD drive! Proof positive that Apple virtually prohibit the use of DVDs - although the newly announced Mac Minis do include a Superdrive.
Yet, they still include iMovie! Heaven alone knows or understands what you are supposed to do with your newly edited masterpiece - except make a low quality version for YouTube?

  • Best Configuration for temporary move

I have recently moved for 90 days.  During this 90 day stay I’m in a separate area of a house that has a wireless network set up.  I have their Wireless Key and able to use their connection to the internet.  I also have access physical access to where their modem & router are at, but I’d like to set it up and be out of their way.  In 90 days I’ll be back at own house and able to plug it back into my DSL  modem and be on my way.  I’d rather leave my network configured the way it is configured – even if that means buying some additional hardware during these 90 days.
I own a Linksys WRT54G Router and have everything all set up correctly to go to DSL modem, but now need to connect it to a Wireless Connection in this temporary house.
During my temporary 90 day stay – what is the best configuration to connect to wirelessly from my “network” to my temporary connections internet access?
Any good links you can send me with set up & configuration advice?

If they have a Wireless router that you could use You could just connect a wireless access port (portable usb access card) that plugs in your usb slot and will give you access to their wireless connection. I don't know if Linksys makes wireless cards or not maybe someone can help you in that regard but you can probably get them cheaply at your local computer store or big box store.
    hope this helps

  • Best configuration for Time Capsule & Airport Extreme running one wireless network?

We just moved to a house that does not have Ethernet pre-wired so I've had to re-setup the wireless network in a different configuration and it seems we're experiencing deteriorated wireless signal for devices like laptops.  It will work perfectly fine (and fast! wheee!!!) but then it will slow to a crawl and mostly timeout.  before I reset everything and start from scratch, I'd like some help.  As an FYI, when connected via Ethernet to either of these, Internet is blazingly fast… so my problem here is the Wireless portion.
As some background, here is how we had the network set up in the previous house which was working great (although it was wired for Ethernet which made things A LOT easier):
    Airport Extreme (4th Generation)
Wireless Mode: Create a Wireless Network
Internet Facing (Connected to the Cable Modem)
Location: Upstairs Utility Closet (with Smartbox and cable modem)
    Time Capsule (1st Generation)
Wireless Mode: Extend a Wireless Network
Joined to existing network above, but also connected to the Ethernet jack
    Location: Upstairs Office
Here is the current set up we have running:
    Time Capsule (1st Generation)
Wireless Mode: Create a Wireless Network
Internet Facing (Connected to the Cable Modem)
    Radio Mode: 802.11n (b/g compatible)
    Location: Upstairs Office
    Airport Extreme (4th Generation)
Wireless Mode: Extend a Wireless Network
Joined to existing network above with NO incoming Ethernet connection
    Location: Downstairs Family Room
My understanding is that the Airport Extreme should pick up and relay the signal downstairs, as well as provide the router for the devices downstairs that need Ethernet (TiVo, Apple TV, etc).
So, my question is (and thank you in advance for helping me sort this out!), what would be the best configuration to optimize the Wireless performance in the house?
Also, for whichever device is the one picking up the existing network and providing the router capabilities for the Tivo and such, is it possible for it to pick up but not rebroadcast the signal?  I think in this new house we may have a good enough signal from the office, without the need to rebroadcast it.  My theory is that in this house, they are too close together and interfere with each other and/or devices aren't sure which to choose so they bounce back and forth endlessly.  Again, just a theory.
Many thanks again for your help! If I've left out any information, please ask and I can provide.

Should they be running on the same channel (as with the "Extend" option previously? Or just both on Automatic channels?
I would recommend the Automatic setting on both devices because this will allow each router to scan and choose an open channel automatically. If  you want to set the channels manually, keep them separated by at least 4-5 channels. You would not want to ever use the same channel for both devices in this type of "roaming" setup.
Is there a way to limit bandwidth per device (or action) so that it doesn't monopolize the network and keep other devices from using it?
Nothing that I am aware of. It sounds like  you have some young users who are likely visiting Bit Torrent sites, which will really gobble up the bandwidth with big, heavy downloads. The Time Machine has to back up the same files again when it makes the next pass, so that clogs things up again.
Backups would go 3-5 times faster, on average, if the computer(s) could connect using Ethernet, but I understand that wires are not cool with the younger crowd.
should BOTH the TC and AE be set up in Bridge mode?
The AirPort Extreme should be set up in Bridge Mode.
The Time Capsule...it depends. If the TC is connected to a simple cable modem...then the correct setting for Connection Sharing would be "Share a public IP address" on the TC. That is because a simple modem has only 1 IP address to deliver. The TC takes that address and "shares" it with other devices by setting up a local network for all your other devices.
If the TC is connected to a gateway....a combination modem/router in the same box that usually has 3-4 Ethernet ports on the device....then that device would be considered the main router on the network and the TC would be  configured in Bridge Mode in that case to function correctly on the network.

  • ASM best configuration disks on EMC storage in RAC

After reading ASM best practices, suggesting to use a disk group for all datafiles and a disk group for FRA I was wondering how to optimize I/O on storage.
I mean.. what about if I add also a disk group for the redologs of the two RAC instances?
Moreover... what are the best practices to use the several disks offered by the storage compared with the possibility to use different LUN on the same big disk of of the storage?
    Example...
My storage has 2 disks of about 2TB each one:
    1) I could partition one disk into two LUN and use this two LUN for the DG_DATA and DG_FRA asm disk groups. Every LUN should be partitioned in small units.
    2) I could use two disks and use one disk for DG_DATA asm disk group and the other for DG_FRA asm disk group.
    3) I could use two disk partitioned in two LUN (and so I have 4 LUN). Add to the DG_DATA disk group the LUN partitions physically based on two different disks, and the others two LUN for the DG_FRA disk group.
Hope you can solve my doubts,
    thanks Marco

    Here's a brief comment ....
There is not one answer that fits all. This is because it all depends on your SAN env and the storage architecture. Some configs are good for a system but disastrous for another.
Also, we must make a clear distinction between the terms LUNs vs. disks. Because DBA interact with storage at the host level, we use them synonymously which is understandable. However, for SAN and storage, they should not be and they are not.
These are some of the guidelines I learned ...
    1) use small spindles with highest RPM for your disk arrays. Rarely we have control over that, but DBAs should at least understand and obtain these specs from SAN admins.
    2) Understand your system's potential bottlenecks and load balance around them. For example, I've seen systems bottleneck at the HBA, DA, spindle, or even host level. This where you need to take caution when you layout DB storage. You do not want 2 IO intensive apps accessing same LUNs on same controller whereas the 2nd one remains semi-idle. Most systems should auto balance them, but at least these apps primary or preferred access path should be separated.
    3) Use expected DB size to decide on your LUN size. You can not layout a TB database using 12GB LUNS nor can you use a 500GB LUN to layout a 50GB DB.
    4) For most storage systems now, data separation occurs as a result of data protection, management convenience and to a lesser extent for performance reasons or IO type (random vs. sequential). Again, the accuracy of this statement varies from one system to another, but at least this is the trend.
    5) always always, measure you IO metrics. There are simple, yet effective measures you or (SAN admin) can do to measure IP performance. Use metrics like service times and latency measures. Also, most application have typical IO profiles like PIO/sec, sequential vs. random reads.
    6) On some systems, I have seen DBAs request LUNs carved from RAID10 arrays for redo logs and RAID5 for the remainder of the database, You can certainly exercise this option.
    Hope this helps
    Thank you

    hello,

    create diskgroup asdf nomal redundancy
    failgroup fail1 DISK
    '/dev/sdc1' name disk01
    failgroup fail2 DISK
    '/dev/sdd1' name disk02
    attribute 'au_size'='4M','compatible.asm'='11.1','compatible.rdbms'='11.1';
sorry for not including this statement before...
    alter diskgroup asdf add disk '/dev/sdd1';
after creating the diskgroup the views the shows the information as
    select name,group_number,total_mb from V$ASM_DISKGROUP;
    NAME GROUP_NUMBER TOTAL_MB
    ASDF 1 12276
    select group_number,disk_number from v$asm_disk;

    1 0
    1 1
    1 2
can any one please explain what is going on here... what is the group with group number 0
and as far as the oracle documentation is considered if we dont specify the failgroup during the datagroup creation time then each disk we specify in the CREATE DISKGROUP STATEMENT will be assigned one fail group.. if it is this case then how are the data being distributed and is the existing data in the diskgroup evenly distributed amoung all the disks in the diskgroup...
