ASM how many Gigs per disk group for performance.

We are migrating from a file system based database 1Tbyte 10.2.0.3 on IBM AIX to a database on Solaris 9 10.2.0.3 with ASM.
Our old system functioned well by breaking up the IO into 15 file system 72.5 GB each over three SAN arrays.
We have no experience of ASM and are wondering if we should break up the IO in a similar way for performance or just have one large disk group? There must be advantages/disadvantages one way or another. Looking for advise.
Thanks very much in advance for any help.

ASM performs striping automatically so you don't need to care about creating multiple disk groups for performance. But if you have different disks in terms of speed and size, then create individual groups for each disk.

  • How many gigs will I need for a LG G3 phone?

I just purchased a G3 phone. I only signed up for 1/2 gig of data because I will only be using the phone for talking and occasional texting. I won't use the internet at all. (And won't be using any apps, email or anything.)  Somebody advised me that 1/2 gig will not be enough -- that I will need 2 gigs -- even if I'm not using internet. They said that data is constantly being used, every time I use the phone. Is this true?  Will I need to update to 2 gigs?  Any opinions or advice on this will be greatly appreciated.  Thank You.

I'm confused as to why you would upgrade to a smartphone with no intention to use the Internet features. There are many wonderful apps out there that keep you informed (most newspapers, radio stations, tv stations have apps), help you keep track of your personal finances (credit cards, bank accounts, etc), navagation apps (no need for a separate gps anymore!), share files, etc.  Even fun things like Shazam, where you hear a song and you just need to know who's performing it!
1 GB should be fine for light users. I use Chrome a lot and watch some videos, plus I am always reading the newspapers online and checking twitter, instagram, etc.  I have trouble connecting to Xfinity wifi hotspots with my G3, and I am not constantly around places that offer wifi.
Just make sure you have the phone set to only update apps over wifi.  And restrict background data on apps as well.  That should eliminate a lot of phantom/unnecessary data usage.
I use about 5GB a month.  People on unlimited plans who are streaming lots of music and video and transferring files can use hundreds of GBs a month.
Have fun with your new phone!  Check out Google Play and download some apps.  You can always turn mobile data on and off from the settings menu as you like.

  • How many disk groups for +DATA?

    Hi All,
Does oracle recommends having one big/shared asm disk group for all of the databases?
In our case we going to have 11.2 and 10g rac running against 11.2 ask...
Am I correct in saying that I have to set asm’s compatibility parameter to 10 in order to be able to use the same disk?
Is this is a good idea? Or should i create another disk group for the 10g db’s?
I’m assuming there are feature that will not be available when the compatibility is reduced to 10g...

what kind of storage system do you have? nas? what is your protocol between server and storage? tcp/ip (=>nfs)? fc?....
if you have a storage with serveral disks then you create mostly more than one lun (raid 0, 1, 5 or whatever). if the requirement is, that you need a 1 TB diskgroup, then I would not create 1 1TB lun, I would create 5x200GB lun's for example, just for the case that you have to extend the diskgroup with a same lun size. if its 1 TB then you have to add another 1TB lun, if there are 5x200GB luns then you can simply add 200GB.
I have nowhere found a document that says: if you have exactly 16 lun's for a diskgroup it's best. it depends on os, storage, etc...
so if you create a 50gb diskgroup I would create just one 50gb lun for example.
hthyes its NAS, connectd using Iscsi. it has 5 disks 1TB each and configued with RAID5. I found below requirments on asm ... it indicates 4luns as minimum per diskgroup, but it doesnt clearify whether its for external redundancy or as mredundancy types.
•A minimum of four LUNs (Oracle ASM disks) of equal size and performance is recommended for each disk group.
•Ensure that all Oracle ASM disks in a disk group have similar storage performance and availability characteristics. In storage configurations with mixed speed drives, such as 10K and 15K RPM, I/O performance is constrained by the slowest speed drive.
•Oracle ASM data distribution policy is capacity-based. Ensure that Oracle ASM disks in a disk group have the same capacity to maintain balance.
•Maximize the number of disks in a disk group for maximum data distribution and higher I/O bandwidth.
•Create LUNs using the outside half of disk drives for higher performance. If possible, use small disks with the highest RPM.
•Create large LUNs to reduce LUN management overhead.
•Minimize I/O contention between ASM disks and other applications by dedicating disks to ASM disk groups for those disks that are not shared with other applications.
•Choose a hardware RAID stripe size that is a power of 2 and less than or equal to the size of the ASM allocation unit.
•Avoid using a Logical Volume Manager (LVM) because an LVM would be redundant. However, there are situations where certain multipathing or third party cluster solutions require an LVM. In these situations, use the LVM to represent a single LUN without striping or mirroring to minimize the performance impact.
•For Linux, when possible, use the Oracle ASMLIB feature to address device naming and permission persistency.
ASMLIB provides an alternative interface for the ASM-enabled kernel to discover and access block devices. ASMLIB provides storage and operating system vendors the opportunity to supply extended storage-related features. These features provide benefits such as improved performance and greater data integrity.
one more question about fdisk partitioning. is it correct that we should only create one partition per luns (5x200Gb luns in my case) is it because this way i will have more consistent set of luns( in term of performance)?

  • How do I define 2 disk groups for ocr and voting disks at the oracle grid infrastructure installation window

    Hello,
It may sound too easy to someone but I need to ask it anyway.
I am in the middle of building Oracle RAC 11.2.0.3 on Linux. I have 2 storage and I created three LUNs in each of storage so 6 LUNs in total look in both of servers. If I choose NORMAL as a redundancy level, is it right to choose my 6 disks those are created for OCR_VOTE at the grid installation? Or should I choose only 3 of them and configure mirroring at latter stage?
The reason why I am asking this is that I didn't find any place to create asm disk group for ocr and voting disks at the oracle grid infrastructure installation window. In fact, I would to like to create two disk groups in which one of groups contains three disks those were brought from storage 1 and the second one contains rest three 3 disk that come from the last storage.
I believe that you will understand the manner and help me on choosing proper way.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
    You have 2 Storage H/W.
You will need to configure a Quorum ASMDisk to store a Voting Disk.
Because if you lose 1/2 or more of all of your voting disks, then nodes get evicted from the cluster, or nodes kick themselves out of the cluster.
You must have the odd number of voting disk (i.e 1,3 or 5)  one voting disk per ASM DISK, So 1 Storage will hold more voting disk than another storage.
    (e.g 3 Voting Disk - 2 voting stored in stg-A and 1 voting disk store in stg-B)
If fail the storage that hold the major number of  Voting disk the whole cluster (all nodes) goes down. Does not matter if you have a other storage online.
    It will happen:

  • How do I access Disk Utility for 10.7.1?

How do I access Disk Utility for 10.7.1? I found it in the forums a few weeks ago, used it, then lost the directions. This is a last ditch attempt
to use OS Lion. I parted my hair incorrectly when I installed and have been plagued by the dread rainbow spinning ball in EVERY application. Yes, every. Name one, Safari, Firefox, Text Edit, Mail, Excel, Word, iTunes, Garage Band, Calculator, Calender, iPhoto....yes, every, and I cannot
find a solution that works. I have back up files on two different hard drives 500 gig and 1 terrabyte with all my music, photo and writing files.
I am a writer and a musician so imagine the frustration. OS 10.6 is an option of course. My dedication to Apple and each new OS is deep so
I am hoping that somehow there will a fix, an upgrade, something that does not require me to go bac to the much more endangered species named OS.
hahhaa! Just stalled waiting for the ball to finish with it's random spinning.... SO, this is like a last desperate .... it just did two more stalls.
NO OTHER apps running, just little Firefox holding on for dear life, last desperate request for a fix.
MacKeeper has been great in sending helpful directions for getting the Antivirus to work after it mysteriously decided to stop working, Quite MacKeeper,  go to Activity Monitor, force quit helper, start up MacKeeper and run program. It works!
SO before my third stall stops me, please post directions to open disk utility in administration mode so that I can do any further repairs that have not worked by using it from the open system. Also keychain synching stopped working with Lion.
Thanks to any and all who can help.

Press and hold Command-R keys and reboot. You'll then start up in the Lion Recovery HD. You'll find Disk Utility there.
    Command-R to the rescue.
Just hold down Command-R during startup and Lion Recovery springs into action. It lets you choose from common utilities: You can run Disk Utility to check or repair your hard drive, erase your hard drive and reinstall a fresh copy of Lion, or restore your Mac from a Time Machine backup. You can even use Safari to get help from Apple Support online. And if Lion Recovery encounters problems, it will automatically connect to Apple over the Internet.

    Hello,
The customer / vendor account groups are mainly depends on the requirement of the client.
The requirement depends on how their customer / vendors are depends on the following things
    (a) Number Range - How many number ranges are required (either channel / one time customer / Division Specific / Geographic Specific etc)
    (b) Field Display / Mandatory during Master Record - Few fields are mandatory for certain range customers etc
    (c) Assignment of Reconciliation Account- How your schedule -VI of the companies act required.

  • How to tell how many gigs selected?

I have a 4 gig mini. But about 20 gig of music in Itunes. How can I tell how many gigs I have selected in Itunes to transfer.
    Thanks,
    Mark

The update option "Sync Music - Selected playlists" is useful if you are using an iPod with a smaller capacity than what you have stored in iTunes. You can tell from the playlist just how much space the songs will take up by clicking on it, the information appears at the bottom of your screen.
Open iTunes and create a playlist to update your iPod from, call it -iPod to make it the first playlist in Sources. You can make this a normal playlist and drag whatever you want to it or you can make it a random Smart playlist. If you are making a smart playlist limit it to just less than the size of your iPod (for example 3700MB for a 4G iPod Mini). Now connect your iPod and when it appears in the Source list click on the iPod icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. Go to the Music tab and choose Sync Music and the Selected playlists radio button. Choose the playlist you just made from the selection and click Apply:

  • How many SECONDARY INDEXES are created for CLUSTER TABLES?

how many SECONDARY INDEXES are created for CLUSTER TABLES?
    please explain.

There seems to be some kind of misunderstanding here. You cannot create a secondary index on a cluster table. A cluster table does not exist as a separate physical table in the database; it is part of a "physical cluster". In the case of BSEG for instance, the physical cluster is RFBLG. The only fields of the cluster table that also exist as fields of the physical cluster are the leading fields of the primary key. Taking again BSEG as the example, the primary key includes the fields MANDT, BUKRS, BELNR, GJAHR, BUZEI. If you look at the structure of the RFBLG table, you will see that it has primary key fields MANDT, BUKRS, BELNR, GJAHR, PAGENO. The first four fields are those that all cluster tables inside BSEG have in common. The fifth field, PAGENO, is a "technical" field giving the sequence number of the current record in the series of cluster records sharing the same primary key.
All the "functional" fields of the cluster table (for BSEG this is field BUZEI and everything beyond that) exist only inside a raw binary object. The database does not know about these fields, it only sees the raw object (the field VARDATA of the physical cluster). Since the field does not exist in the database, it is impossible to create a secondary index on it. If you try to create a secondary index on a cluster table in transaction SE11, you will therefore rightly get the error "Index maintenance only possible for transparent tables".
Theoretically you could get around this by converting the cluster table to a transparent table. You can do this in the SAP dictionary. However, in practice this is almost never a good solution. The table becomes much larger (clusters are compressed) and you lose the advantage that related records are stored close to each other (the main reason for having cluster tables in the first place). Apart from the performance and disk space hit, converting a big cluster table like BSEG to transparent would take extremely long.
In cases where "indexing" of fields of a cluster table is worthwhile, SAP has constructed "indexing tables" around the cluster. For example, around BSEG there are transparent tables like BSIS, BSAS, etc. Other clusters normally do not have this, but that simply means there is no reason for having it. I have worked with the SAP dictionary for over 12 years and I have never met a single case where it was necessary to convert a cluster to transparent.
If you try to select on specific values of a non-transparent field in a cluster without also specifying selections for the primary key, then the database will have to do a serial read of the whole physical cluster (and the ABAP DB interface will have to decompress every single record to extract the fields). The performance of that is monstrous -- maybe that was the reason of your question. However, the solution then is (in the case of BSEG) to query via one of the index tables (where you are free to create secondary indexes since those tables are transparent).

    hi Krishna Chaitanya,
In a badi if the "Multiple Use" Checkbox is checked then You can have any number of Implementations for the BADI
    Say I have defined a BADI "BADI1"
    and I have 3 implementations
    IMP1
    IMP2
    IMP3
The order of execution will be IMP1, IMP2 and IMP3
In a badi if the  "Multiple Use" Checkbox is not checked then You can have ONLY ONE  Implementation for the BADI
    Say I have defined a BADI "BADI1"
    and I have 3 implementations
    IMP1
    IMP2
    IMP3
Only one Implementation can be active at a time and only that will get executed
    Hope this helps a bit

  • How can I see on the new itunes how many gigs a playlist is?

On the new Itunes I can't seem to see how many gigs a playlist is without trying to add it to my device.. it is extremely annoying and it makes it very difficult to build effective play lists.

Either CTRL+/, or View > Show Status Bar.
Either of those will bring back the line of information along the bottom, including duration and size.

  • In how many days i can prepare for OCP 11g DB track ?

Dear all, i need help that in how many days can i prepare for my OCP DB track, i have already prepared for SQL paper rest now i have started to prepare for Administrator-I, and Administrator-II exam... and which book is best to follow
    thanks in advance.

How good is your memory? If you just want to pass the exam for the sake of passing it then you could cram all the information in there. I'd argue that even someone who wasn't a DBA would be able to learn to pass these exams if they studied hard to to remember all the answers - they are multiple choice after all.
Practice some [url http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mnemonic]Mnemonics to remember certaing parts, I can't remember which ones...
But, seriously, as the others have said it depends where you are starting from in terms of knowledge/experience and how much time you can spare to learning it. There might be small or big gaps in your knowledge when you start looking through the books.
And remember that the best certification is good quality real world experience. The certifications help to show that you are willing to learn and develop your skills and that you can learn. I don't believe they show you can actually do the job.
    Good luck!
