ASM install not RAC aware

SPARC:
installed 11g clusterware using crs user, oinstall and dba group,
then install 11g ASM using oracle user, but it does not show RAC option.
ASM install not RAC aware if not use same user?
Thanks.

I'm not sure if you're talking about creating an ASM instance? The ASM software install is the same as the Database install. Oracle recommends running ASM from a separate Home which would require a separate Oracle database install.

I can't address the Sql Dev specifics but the 'kill' statement itself is NOT rac-aware in versions prior to 11.1 (you did NOT provide your DB  version.
And for 11.1 and later you have to provide the instance id for the third parameter.
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b28286/statements_2013.htm
For the optional integer3, specify the ID of the instance where the target session to be killed exists. You can find the instance ID by querying the GV$ tables.
I suggest you edit your post and provide more info so someone from the sql dev team can respond to how sql dev issues that particular statement. Depending on your sql dev version the actual sql issued would be shown in the log window if you have it open.
    1. full DB version - that 3rd parameter is NOT supported for versions prior to 11.1
    2. full Sql version

It all depends on what your mapping problem was and what you did to resolve it. Here are a couple of things you could try:
-Make sure the orc.loc file on ebdb1 has the same entry as ebdb2. Also, say you are using shared raw devices for CRS: make sure your raw devices are consistent on both nodes.
If the above does not work
-Make sure the shared devices are consistent on both nodes and restore one of the OCR backups. I am sure at least one of the backups 4hrs/8hrs/1day/2day/1week some thing must be a worthwhile. If you do restore OCR from a backup make sure to run cluvfy before you start your CRS.
Always a good practise to take a backup of status quo before you restore from the backups.
It would be interesting to know what lead to your disk mapping problem in the first palce.
    Good Luck!

  • RAC-aware applications

    Hello All,
I am asked to define RAC aware applications or filter out the applications from the applications currently supported by Oracle databases, which are "RAC-aware". My understanding is, at the database-tier, for example we could say the OEM console or the RMAN are implicitly "RAC-aware" if installed and configured using ASM 11g and Clusterware 11g.
Is there any criteria to determine any particular application (in the application landscape which will be migrated onto new RAC platform) is "RAC-aware" or not?
Could you please give me pointers/leads how to identify within domain applications (apps) which are RAC-aware and which are not.
    Many Thanks & Regards,
    Abhijit

Thanks for the reply. Will Enterprise level legacy applications for a retail/healthcare business be single-threaded apps? or do they rely absolutely sequential process ? these used to happen in very old legacy mainframe based apps/having sequential reads etc?).. isnt it?
Ability to re-apply the write operations after connection is restored which happens after a failed connection should be in any application as a default - isnt it? I was looking around if there is any such explicit command/other means which when issued from the Application after connecting to the OracleSID or ConnectString that says or returns something like this message to the application: "The connection is to a RAC database and this application is RAC-aware" (for RAC-aware apps) and not for RAC-aware apps.
need more detailed inputs and examples please. Thanks a lot in advance..

  • How to configure ASM of 11gR2 RAC on Solaris 10

    Hi all,
I have the first time to install the RAC on Solaris 10. I have stuck on the ASM disk group step in the Grid Infrastructure.
    Our Configuration
2 Sun Server in Solaris 10 with same configure (which we are not using shared drive)
    250GB Local Hard Disk
1100 GB Raw Disk (which at SAN)
3GB x 3 Raw Disk (which at SAN) for voting disk
When I install Grid Infrastructure, I select first option: Install and Confgure Grid in Cluster (I can't remember the exact name) and also select the Typical Installation. The previous steps are successful before the ASM Disk Group. At ASM Disk Group, no disk are display for selection.
So, how to fix the missing disk in this ASM Disk Group creation?
    Please help!

I would break the 1100G into 11@100G devices and use EXTERNAL redundancy (RAID on the SAN side). You will get much better performance. (Configured/managed a 250TB 3node cluster on Sun 6900s however my LUNs were 1.5TB in size)

Sunny YipAgain using a single 1.1TB device will not get you better performance and should you need to add additional devices, they too will need to be 1.1TB. Sometimes smaller is better.
Make sure you use a partition that starts at cylinder 1 or 2
Make sure you set the correct permissions (660) and ownership (gridowner:oinstall) on those devices and make sure the oracle user is a member of that group.

  • Help while creating ASM instance on rac environment on Linux

Help while creating ASM instance on rac environment on Oracle enterprise Linux 4 x84_64 Update 5 (10g2).
    a) Installed ASMLib 2.0 Packages

By running following command (on both node), I get following that means disk are detected.
    /etc/init.d/oracleasm listdisks

    VOL2
    VOL3
But Disk members not displayed for creating disk groups. I even tried to "Change Disk Discovery Path" button and put "ORCL:VOL*" but still no luck.
Someone told me use, use ADD DISKS button but this button is disabled for me.
Can anyone, please help me if I missing something.

  • ASM Disks not appearing

I am installing Oracle RAC 10.2 on an EM64-T box, RedHat Linux 4, using a shared MSA1000 SAN for the shared storage.
I have installed CSS (and it is running correctly), and have downloaded and installed the ASM libraries and Oracle.
From the command line I can do an "oracleasm createdisk VOL1 /dev/sda2", then do a "listdisks" and see the device (VOL1) on BOTH nodes in my RAC cluster.
Using DBCA, however, when I try to manage ASM it does not show the device (VOL1). I have confirmed that my Discovery path is ORCL:*.
    Any thoughts?

    hi,
We face the same problem while setting up Oracle ASM on 10R2 RAC on RHEL4. you need to specify the disk path instead of string 'ORCL:'. specify string '/dev/oracleasm/disks/*' and then see, DBCA will show you all the ASM disks you have created.

I had this problem and resolved it by transporting the file to the installation server with the correct ftp datatype (binary).
On page 54 of the install guide (..Server\Oracle_Business_Intelligence\doc\doc\bi.1013\b31765.pdf) that comes with the installation files, there is an instruction to make sure that any ftp activity is done in binary.
This may not have occured with the license.xml file if you use a tool which offers the "feature" of automatic datatype recognition.
    Hope this helps.

what means is about start all oracle related services in sequence?CRS will start the complete Oracle cluster s/w cluster for you - ASM, RAC, nodeapps, etc.
Usually, the only effort required is simply hitting the reset/power on button - as the o/s will boot, CRS will start and it will in turn bring up the s/w stack. No manual intervention required. (unless you on purpose configured it differently)
Based on Billy suggestion, can I use srvctl stop nodeapps -n all and #ORA_CRS_HOME/bin/crsctl stop crsNo - my suggestion is that before the SAN maintenance window period start, you do a "+shutdown -h now+" on all cluster nodes to halt/powerdown each and every RAC server.
And after the SAN maintenance period is over, and the SAN available again, ssh into the LoM (Lights Out Management) console of each server and do a "+start SYS+" (or equivalent) to powerup the server.
In other words, with the SAN down/busy rebooting/undergoing maintenance, I would not want to have my RAC servers up and running as there is no storage layer to run them on. IMO, it is a lot safer to have these servers powered down to during such a maintenance period.
PS. I have even had the odd case that during SAN maintenance power cables being pulled, Interconnect switches accidentally reset and so on - or you could have some bright spark also shutting down the aircon with the SAN and your RAC servers suffering heat problems and potential damage while running. So my question is - why should I take the risk of keeping my RAC servers up when the storage layer is not there and the cluster is broken and useless? Surely it makes a lot more sense to power down those servers too and then only power them on again when the maintenance period is over and the SAN (and data centre) is in a proper running state again.

  • Configuring RAC-aware JDBC connection in Oracle SQL Developer?

How can Oracle SQL Developer be configured to properly connect to an [Oracle RAC|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oracle_RAC] environment, I.E., not just setup to always connect to one of the individual nodes?
[http://programmersjournal.blogspot.com/2008/08/jdbc-connection-string-for-oracle-rac.html] has an example of a classic and the equivalent RAC-aware version of a JDBC connection string. I've already been using a RAC connection string of the same format from within custom Java applications without issue. I thought the same should be configurable in Oracle SQL Developer by setting the "Connection Type" drop-down to "Advanced", then entering the RAC-aware JDBC connection string as the "Custom JDBC URL". However, upon testing the connection, the following error is displayed at the bottom of the dialog:
Status : Failure -Test failed: Io exception: NL Exception was generated
There is no additional information shown on the "Logging Page" view. Using Oracle SQL Developer 1.5.5.
    Thanks!

Thanks, Barry. Just F.Y.I., it is working for me now that I upgraded to the 2.1 EA as -K- suggested. I had marked his reply as "Correct", but probably should have left a response indicating my success as well.
Now, if there's anything you could do regarding the [issues around the display performance of CLOBs, etc., in the Query Result view|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/message.jspa?messageID=3906571] , it'd be very appreciated!

    INFO: User Selected: Yes/OK
Tells you that the Oracle Home could not be copied onto the remote node. The logs mentioned might tell you more, but this is the reason why ASM cannot be started on the other node - there is no software that could be used to start an ASM instance. Now you said:
"+It appears to me as though the installer was not able to copy over the "/u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1" directory to the rac2 node. My question would be: What do you try to achieve? IF it is your only interest to "get it done and over with", then you can TAR up the Oracle Database home from which you want to run ASM and un-TAR on the remote node. Given that the paths are all correct, the registration already took place and hence, you can try starting the ASM instance on node2. IF you want to know the reason for the issue, further investigation and more information would be required.
    Hope that helps. Thanks,
    Markus
