Thanks,
ORA-15063: ASM discovered an insufficient number of disks for diskgroup "string"
Cause: ASM was unable to find a sufficient number of disks belonging to the diskgroup to continue the operation.
Action: Check that the disks in the diskgroup are present and functioning, that the owner of the ORACLE binary has read/write permission to the disks, and that the ASM_DISKSTRING initialization parameter has been set correctly. Verify that ASM discovers the appropriate disks by querying V$ASM_DISK from the ASM instance.

Instance startup problem after offline backup
Hi,
We have scheduled an offline backup of our NW2004s ABAP + Java system through brtools. But after the offline backup instance is not coming up automatically. After going though the instance work directory I found the following problem in dev_ms file.
Once we come across this problem we have to restart the server to make it work.

SAP instance startup problem - MCOD
Hi All,
We have installed two SAP systems with MCOD database concept ie.. ERP and CRM system uses single database.
Installation completed successfully...
Now the problem is If I start ERP system first then CRM system will not come up and happening vice versa.
Please suggest me a solution ASAP .How can I distribute the memory to the two instances ..If the problem is not related to the Memory what are all the other things needs to be checked.
Thanks in advancePlease find the outputs

How to start ASM instance at boot time - RHEL 2.1
Oracle 10.1.0.3
RHEL 2.1
I'm not able to get the ASM instance (not RAC) to start at boot time. It seems that the ocssd daemon does not finish starting until after all rc* scripts, including rc.local, have finished executing.
Patch 3458327 includes a new dbstart with header notes that are in conflict. The notes says that dbstart can't be used to start ASM until AFTER all rc* is finished. Then it continues and states that ASM instance startup should be put in rc.local.
As soon as I get logged on, a ps -ef|grep ocssd shows the daemon running. I can then manually start the ASM instance. There must be a way to get the ASM instance "auto" started at boot time.
Ideas? The cheapest and administratively easiest way for me was to start Oracle instances (ASM and data) by "at" command :-) from rc scripts. Something like:
....echo "oracle start" | at now+2min....
Additionally the deferred startup has some additional advantages in my environment, so I am not motivated to look for better solution.
Best regards,
Pavel -
ASM Instance high availability.
what woululd be the best practice to keep the ASM instance high available,
Right now i have 3 dbs running on one ASM instance, i am wondering if this ASM instance has problem all the 3 dbs will be down....Have you looked at the Oracle® Database High Availability Best Practices Guide?
http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b25159/toc.htm
Other areas to look would be clustering, either using Oracle clustering or clustering from another vendor such as Veritas or PollyServ. -
Would oracle start ASM instance automatically?
Hi there,
I experienced this yesterday while testing my scripts.
I wrote couple of unix shell scripts (OEL) - one to shutdown all DBs (which, at the end shuts down the ASM instance as well) and the second one to start all the DBs.
In the second one, I forgot to inclde the commands to startup the ASM instance first and executed the script. I noticed there were no errors during the DB startup (which included the DB that uses ASM) and when I checked the output of "ps -ef | grep pmon", +ASM instance was already up and running.
So the ASM instance was started up automatically - I wonder if this is how it should be?
If this is normal, should I forget about adding ASM instance startup commands to the second shell script?

If 11gR2 , ASM home will come automatically i.e. diskgroups will be mounted.
or check is there any script mentioned in init.d something like http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/linux/AutomatingDatabaseStartupAndShutdownOnLinux.php -
Problem in ASM Disk Groups / Instance startup
Hi,
I got ORA-15041 when trying to add a datafile to a tablespace in 11gR2 RAC in RHEL 5.4.
In order to solve that, I would do a ALTER DISKGROUP .. RESIZE DISK command.
But to do that, I think I should startup an ASM instance.
I created a file /tmp/init+ASM.ora (with INSTANCE_TYPE=ASM), connected to an idle instance, created an spfile from pfile = '/tmp/init+ASM.ora';
When I try to startup nomount, I get ORA-01031.
Any idea?

Problem starting ASM instance after installing Oracle Grid standalone
Hi!
After installing Oracle Grid 11gr2 and rebooting my machine:
Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.32-300.10.1.el5uek #1 SMP Wed Feb 22 17:37:40 EST 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
I run asmca command and it failed to startup ASM instance, I tried to paste the log but it's too long!
Could someone help me please! thank you very much!
José

Configure ASM Instance in RAC cluster - problem
Linux RH4 with Oracle 11.1.0.6
I previously had ASM working in a RAC environment, but have uninstalled on all 3 nodes following Oracle guidelines.
When I attempt to re-configure ASM it states that an ASM instance is located in nodes 2 and 3. Previous ASM software has been removed, and there are no entries in the /etc/oratab files on any of the nodes.
How do I locate and then remove these instances on nodes 2 and 3
ThanksSteps in Note 311350.1 have been followed, and there are no occurances of ASM appearing in the crs_stat output. Also the fact that the ASM software has also been removed from all of the various, where are these ASM instances being started?
I am unable to proceed past the "Select Configuration Screen" which gives you the option to 1)Create Database, 2)Configure ASM or 3) Install Software only.
When I select option 2 and enter ASM SYS password, I get the error message that ASM instances are present in the other nodes.
Would appreciate any help in how I can progress past this stage.
Thanks -
Getting error 'could not locate ASM instance' when make copy of ASM VM
Hi everyone,
I make virtual machine of OEL 5.7 with oracle 10.2.0.1 and successfully configured ASM instance. I am using vmware workstation.
Now when I make copy of this virtual machine and startup database, then I get the below error:

So how can i solve this problem??

I add 3 SCSI vmware disks. and then use them as a raw device. no ASMLib is used.
I refer below tutorial
[http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/10g/asm-using-asmlib-and-raw-devices.php]
That tutorial picks up after you created the disks.
How did you create the virtual disks attatched to your vm? What are its properties - from VMWorksation's perspective.
How did you create the "copy" of the vm?
It depends on how you actually created the disks, at the vm level, not the partitioning and formatting at the vm's OS level. I've used Tim's tutorials myself on some other ASM related projects, and he typically has you create the ASM disks as 'sharable', which would mean they would not copy necessarily copy with the vm. I've not played around the with variants much, but I'm pretty sure what you are seeing is a result of either the way the disk was created in the original vm, or the way you made the copy of the vm, or both.
Take a look at the machine properties of the two vms in the VMWorkstation control panel, looking at the HDD definitions. Compare and contrast.Hi EdStevens,
My problem resolved with below steps. Thanks fro your replies.

Can you post the dbca log?
and do you share the asm home with oracle home? if it is separated then add LISTENER_+ASM1 in tnsnames in ASMHOME, otherwise add it in ORACLEHOME

Trouble using asm instance for new database
I have an asm instance and am trying to create a new database that will use the asm storage. I'm using dbca to create the new database. This is a test system on windows so I'm using the asmtool -create flatfiles for disks with the asmallow_only_raw_disks parameter set to false.
If I have #SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES = (NTS) commented out in my sqlnet.ora, then I can't get into asmcmd:
ORA-01031: insufficient privileges (DBD ERROR: OCISessionBegin)
and dbca won't create the new database that uses asm because the dbca gets the same 01031 error when trying to create the control files for that database.
If I have SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES = (NTS) NOT commented out, the I can get into asmcmd, but I can't startup the databases using sys, even though I am sitting at the server,
AND, dbca won't create the new database that uses asm becuase the dbca can't start the instance
credential retrieval failure.
I'm in a catch 22. Something is not right with my system but I just can't seem to figure out what it is.
The asm instance does have a password file.I let the dbca create scripts and am currently walking through the scripts. I think it's my asm database that is actually creating the problem. I did the orapwd and oradim manually and can startup nomount the instance just fine. The create database statement fails on creating the controlfile but it's saying it already exists. I suspected the dbca form wasn't giving me all the errors like it should.
Thanks for your suggestion on the password file. -
Trying to create ASM instance, thinks one already exists?
I've got a problem with creating the ASM instance. Basically, I've reinstalled (v11.1.0.6) clusterware, and two database software installs (one for asm, one for db) due to a san swap. Now, I believe that there is still a hangover to the original installation. When creating the ASM instance through DBCA on Windows, I get the following:
DBCA could not startup the ASM instance configured on this node. To proceed with ASM diskgroup management you need the ASM instance to be up and running. Do you want to recreate the ASM instance on this node?
Yes
Enter password
DBCA will now create and start the ASM instance. After the ASM instance is started, you can create disk groups to be used as storage for your database.
OK
ASM Instance Creation...
Encountered file error when copying listeners from home=D:\oracle\product\11.1.0\asm_2
OK
The operation will be stopped. Re-run DBCA after successfully running NetCA.
I have a listener running (listener_rac), I have a similar problem with netca as it says I already have a listener called listener, which I do not, however, I have created listener_rac instead.
I feel trhat the problem is that ASM1 (for node 1) or ASM2 (for node 2) already exists. However, I can not find either of these. I can create an ASM instance in single node mode, however, this creates an instance +ASM, which does not conflict.
How do I find the non-existent instance, and remove it? (not in registry or services)
Alternatively, any other ideas as to what is happening?

Listener is running on node: node02
if not start, start it by
Usage: srvctl start listener -n <node_name> [-l <lsnr_name_list>]
srvctl start listener -n node01
by the way, you cam use "netca" delete/recreate (listener_rac)
After that, point to ASM:
I feel trhat the problem is that ASM1 (for node 1) or ASM2 (for node 2) already exists. However, I can not find either of these. What did you see?
crs_stat
srvctl status asm -n node01
srvctl status asm -n node02
if you see asm on node01/node2... you can start them if thet offline
srvctl start asm -n node01
srvctl start asm -n node02
and then.. use "DBCA" to help create ASM diskgroups.
I can create an ASM instance in single node mode, however, this creates an instance +ASM, which does not conflict.that can conflict.. don't start it (+ASM)
How do I find the non-existent instance, and remove it? (not in registry or services)
Alternatively, any other ideas as to what is happening?use "crs_stat" command
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/rac.111/b28255/crsref.htm#CWADD6025
and use "srvctl"
