ASm On windows

I want to use regular "Windows disks" for ASM.
I have created unformated logical drives on windows. When i run dbca wizard for asm but when creating disk group i changed the disk discover path using \\.\*: for finding the logical drives i get an error
ora-02097 parameter cannot be modified because specified value is invalid.
ora-15031 disk specification \\.\*: matches no disks
ora-15056 additional error message
any One have any idea whats be the possible cause. If any one configure asm just like i am doing. Please help me. Using oracle 10g rel 2.
Thanks

Prepare Disks for Database Storage
You need to configure disk storage for use with Automatic Storage
Management (ASM). ASM storage consists of one or more disk groups, each
of which can span multiple disks. To prepare the shared disks that you
identified you need to create two or more logical drives, each on a different shared disk, for a total of at least 7 GB. To prepare each logical drive, perform these
steps:
Navigate to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools >
Computer Management
Expand the Storage folder to Disk Management
Identify a shared disk that contains the required amount of free space
and right click inside an unused part of an extended partition.
Choose Create Logical Drive in the option window and a wizard presents
pages for configuring the logical drive.
Enter the size that you want for the partition. All of the partitions
that you create for your ASM disk groups should include as much of the
free space on the disk as possible. Additionally, however, the
partitions should all be the same size.
Choose the option Do not assign a drive letter and then choose the
option Do not format this partition. Click Finish on the last page of
the wizard.
Stamp the Logical Drives for ASM
To enable disk discovery during the database install, the logical drives
used to store your database files must be stamped with an ASM header
using a GUI tool called asmtoolg. All disk names created by the tool
begin with the prefix ORCLDISK for identification purposes. Complete the
following procedure to stamp the logical drives that you created.
To open the tool, double-click CRS home\BIN\asmtoolg where
Select Add or change label and click Next on the Welcome screen.
On the Stamp Disks screen, select the disks to stamp and keep the
default settings for Generate stamps with this prefix, then click Next.
Click Next on the Stamp disks screen.
Click Finish to save your work and exit from the tool.

  • Oracle11g heterogenous data guard Linux-ASM primary, Windows-Filesystem standby

Is it possible to setup a standby database on (Windows 64bit) OS filesystem with 32GB datafile limit that syncs with a primary database on (Linux 64bit) ASM that has datafiles that are larger than 32GB.
There is a Linux-ASM standby in place, this will be an additional standby, to be used as a reporting database using Oracle11g snapshot standby
I have used datapump to export-import from Linux-ASM to Windows-filesystem by precreating additional 32GB datafiles in the Windows database, the import works, it takes too long to import for a reporting database
it's not clear to me how to synchronize the new standby without using RMAN full or incremental backup-restores
Any suggestions or suggested document IDs are welcome!
    Thank you,
    Drew Salisbury

    Hi Drew,
Standby files have to be the same size/distribution as the primary - that can be differnet os, in ASM etc but they have to be the same number and size.
There are some ways to speed up import - parallel etc but in a big database there is always a lot of time lost in index building post data load.
How feasible is it to shrink the datafiles in wondows nack to 32GB......?
Can you set up ASM on windows?
You could use streams or something to replicate and keep the copy you created up to date rather than using physical standby?

  • Oracle 10G support with ASM in Windows VM

    Hi,
Planning to use Oracle 10G inside a Windows VM with paravirtualized drivers. We will be using iSCSI software initiator from within the windows VM directly to provision LUNs and use ASM as well.
Will this combination fall under the supported category?
    thanks!

There are many different organizations involved with your question about being supported, so your best answer would be an official one directly from your Sales contact. There are mostly technical folk in these forums who can tell you if it will work, but that is not stating a support policy.

  • Create 10g Database with ASM on Windows Server 2003 x64

I am running Windows 2003 Server Enterprise x64 on a Dell server and wish to install Oracle 10g 10.2 with ASM.
First, I performed a software only install. Then, I created several raw partitions on each of two SATA2 disks, and created a disk group - DGROUP1 - using two partitions from each disk. So far so good.
Next, I tried to use DBCA to create a general purpose database using ASM, and that is where the problem arose. I can use sqlplus to stop and start the ASM instance, but when I use DBCA to select ASM for storage I am asked for the SYS password for ASM. I enter it and get a message "Passwords cannot be verified because: Io exception: The network adapter could not establish the connection". If I ignore this I can go on to select my DGROUP1, but the installation ultimately fails due to "insufficient privileges".
    Can anyone please help?

    Hi Martin
Thanks for the reply. I used ASMTOOLG to stamp the disks and then used DBCA and followed the description hereo create the disk group DGROUP1:
    http://www.databasejournal.com/features/oracle/article.php/3571371
At one point, DBCA prompted me to run "localconfig add", which I did.
If it is a missing password file that is the problem, is it possible to create one to put things right?

  • Oracle ASM on Windows

I think I may need some help getting the storage for my ASM right. I changed companies recently and the new place is a Windows house so the Oracle databases are all on 2008 R2 machines. I have run Oracle RAC on both physical and virtual before, but only in Linux/Unix environments (which so far I still prefer) so I'm still learning some of the ins and outs. This company is also looking at moving to RAC, so ASM is in the mix. To begin my testing, I have set up an ASM instance for a single host which will eventually become a development hub holding several databases. However, even before I've set up any databases, the host is locking up. I suspect it has something to do with the disk configuration in that while the lock ups have occurred while the vm is idling, several lock-ups have happened when I try to drop a disk from within the asmca utility. I followed the documentation that Oracle provided for Windows platforms, but this documentation of course does not offer insight into storage virtualization on vmware.
    Here is my configuration:
    VMware: vSphere 5.5
    OS: Windows 2008 R2 Standard
    Memory: 12G
    Storage: OS: 60G; ASM: 20G, 5G, 5G
Oracle Grid: 11.2.0.4 (plus January 2014 CPU)
Oracle Database: 11.2.0.4 (plus January 2014 CPU)
Other details (maybe important, maybe not):
    1) I have a large pages enabled
    2) Disks are thin-provisioned. As a side-note, I've always thick-provisioned my ASM disks, but our Sr. IT admin has made a policy that all disks are to be thin-provisioned for efficiency. I'm not sure if this could cause an issue.
    3) The 3 ASM disks are running using the Paravirtualized SCSI driver
    4) The host also has an OEM 12c Agent installed and running.
I'm new to the Windows platform when it comes to Oracle (I've administered plenty of SQL Server DBs), but the lockups don't appear to be generating any kind of data to any logs.

I'll elaborate a bit more. The host is "locked up" in that you can ping it, but if you try to log in by RDP or through the vmware console, it doesn't generate your desktop. Also, whatever is happening on the server is keeping the agent, listener, etc, from reporting to OEM. Lastly, if an RDP session is open, then you'll get the "disconnected from session... attempting to reconnect... " message. The only way to get it out of this state is to tell the hypervisor to reset the system.
Now, as for logs, there is nothing in the asm alert log. The most recent trace file generated is from an rbal event around the time of the lockup, but there aren't any similar traces during the others.
I've checked the windows event logs for errors as well. In the application event log, there was an agent fault during the most recent lock up, but there wasn't one for the previous occurrences. I'm thinking it's more effect, than cause. Nothing listed in the server logs. I have asked the sysadmins to look at the vmware logs, but they're a little challenged in that area and I'm finding I need to provide guidance on issues.

  • ASM on Windows 2003 x64

With OUI I have installed the database sw only (no instance) and at the same time tried to install/configure ASM - all thru OUI following the 'Custom' install path.
As OUI progressed I got to a configuration session where a dialog would have me create a disk group. There where no disks available for me to select. I attempted to 'stamp disks' but when the Select disks dialog appears the next button is grayed out.
In the Select disks dialog: ASM Link: is blank, Device: \device\Harddisk0\partition1.
The change disk discovery looks like: \\.\ORCLDISK*
I have DAS disks and some are labled: Tablespace A, for instance. I tired Tablespace* in the disk discovery but no go.
I tried DBCA with same results. I tried asmtoolg and discovered it is used by DBCA.
I trired asmtool it churns forever and finally returns:

This is where things break down - I do not get a list of candidate disks:
Using the asmtoolg Tool (Graphical User Interface)
The asmtoolg tool is a graphical interface for creating device names. Use asmtoolg to add, change, delete, and examine the devices available for use in Automatic Storage Management.
To add or change disk stamps:
    1.
In the installation media labeled Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (10.2), navigate to database\asmtool and double-click asmtoolg.
If Oracle Database is already installed, go to ORACLE_BASE\ORACLE_HOME\bin and double-click asmtoolg.
    2.
Select the Add or change label option, then click Next.
The asmtoolg tool will show the devices available on the system. Unrecognized disks are labeled as "Candidate device", raw device files as "Oracle raw device file", stamped Automatic Storage Management disks as "Stamped ASM disk", and unstamped Automatic Storage Management disks as "Unstamped ASM disks." The tool also shows disks that are recognized by Windows as a file system (such as NTFS). These are not available for use as disks and cannot be selected. In addition, Microsoft Dynamic disks are not available for use as ASM disks.

  • ASM on windows error

    Hi,
I want to create a single database instance which uses ASM disks on my windows 7 machine.
    Oracle version is 11gr2
Since ASM instance creation is not available with database creation (dbca of 10g) on 11g, I read somewhere that we need to install Oracle Grid Infrastructure.
So, first created few asm disks on my hard drive using
    D:\asmdisks>asmtool -create D:\asmdisks\disk1 1024
    D:\asmdisks>asmtool -create D:\asmdisks\disk2 1024
Now started Oracle Grid Infrastructure and selected "Install and Configure Grid for Standalone server" option, but it does not show me created ASM disks while creating disk group. Also tried changing "Discovery Path"
    So the question is:
    1> am i proceeding correctly?
2> what needs to be done to view asmdisks placed at D:\asmdisks in grid installation.
Please let me know if anything i mentioned is not clear.
    Thanks!

it is an undocumented method, and wont work 'out-of-the-box'
first install Grid Infrastructure (software only), after that you can set up an ASM instance manually with virtual disks like that

  • ASM installation failure from Oracle GRID under Windows 7 64 bit

    I am a rookie..I am running Oracle database 11gR2 running on a Windows 7 64 bit system.
I am implementing ASM onto my system solely for learning purposes
The implementation of ASM has changed between database releases 11gR1 and 11gR2 such that it is no longer configured locally but is now implemented from within Oracle GRID. Unfortunately, the book I am using to study my OCP from was written at the time of 11gR1 so I can no longer follow its instructions to create and configure ASM. Instead of using DBCA I now need to use ASMCA to configure ASM.
As a preliminary requirement I successfully installed Oracle Grid and configured it to run on my standalone server.
I created two partitions on my harddrive ...... drive G: and drive H: with intent of using them as my ASM disks. 45 Gig and 50 gig in size respectively formatted with the NTFS filesystem.
I ran ASMCA in an attempt to create an ASM instance
I specified these partition drives '\\.\G:' and '\\.\H:' in the disk discovery path which were successfully picked up.
However when ASMCA executed the creation process after some time it failed with the following message:
One or more diskgroup(s) creation failed as below:
DiskGroup mydisks creation failed with the following message:
    ORA-15018: diskgroup cannot be created

  • Oracle RAC Installation: Unix nodes, Windows ASM

I have a question about configuring Oracle RAC. I have never done any RAC or ASM installation before. Might be a stupid question for some of you.
Is it possible to install Oracle RAC using following options?
2 node RAC using Sun Solaris
Shared Storage using ASM in Windows server
Any additional information that you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
First of all, do you have a shared storage available to both unix server or you want to use the windows server as a shared storage ?
    From the documentation
    Single Instance and Clustered Environments:
Each database server that has database files managed by ASM needs to be running an ASM instance. A single ASM instance can service one or more single-instance databases on a stand-alone server. Each ASM disk group can be shared among all the databases on the server. In a clustered environment, each node runs an ASM instance, and the ASM instances communicate with each other on a peer-to-peer basis.
Which means that you need to have ASM instance on every server where you have a database instance.
In case you don't have a shared storage to the unix servers, you have two options - iSCSI or NFS. You can setup the windows machine as an iscsi server and both unix machines as an iscsi clients then you will have shared storage on both unix machines. The other option is to configure the window machine as NFS server and mount the NFS share on both unix machines. Then you can deploy the data files directly at the NFS shared (not supported) or create empty files using dd and use then as device files for ASM.
For more information on ASM over NFS you can read Tim Halls article:
    http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/linux/UsingNFSWithASM.php

    Thanks for your advice.
    Regards,
    Muhammad Riaz

    Hi,
First you can add more disks to the diskgroup so you can get more space, ASM will do rebalance once new disks added.
Second, It seems that your archivelog in dataguard were not deleted after being applied. You can delete the applied archivelog in dataguard, use RMAN is the best option
    Hope this helps
