ASM with regard to High Availability

Hi at all!
I try to figure out what effects the use of ASM for my system has, particularly with regard to High Availability. I have a database on a RAID-5 Server, does it make sense to implement ASM for this system? I know, ASM has other effects, regarding the i/o and rebalancing but would it be less fault-prone too? Why? Do you have any Whitepaper-suggestion for me? The FAQ-Link from the 'Welcome to the Automatic Storage Management (ASM) Forum!'-Topic is broken, there is no document 370915.1 in metalink ...
greetings

Hello,
Not sure if you are using a clustered enviroment, but even when using single instance ASM it is usefull to use. You can on the fly add disks, you don't need to worry about anymore about where you put your datafiles for spreading as this is done.
You can use to let your storage system arange the failover like RAID5, but you can also use ASM failure groups for this feature. In case one failure group has an issue it will continue to work and use the correct failure group.
I believe managing your environment will be much easier.

  • Configure OAS with dataguard for high availibility

    Hi,
We use oracle application server to connect to 10g database. This prod db has a physical standby db. I am trying to do a failover test where I make the physical standby as primary and connect to that db from our application.
I change the dads.conf file to point to the physical db. but I get ORA-01033: ORACLE initialization or shutdown in progress Error-Code:1033 Error TimeStamp:Fri, 8 May 2009 21:57:55 GMT
but this physical db is up & open and in read write stage.
The db name is prod and prod_stby. is this because of the different names ??

    Hello,
I think you need to keep the infrastructure database names the same. Have you considered using the failover capabilities within 10gAS for your application servers? This is different from
Data Guard standby database option. Here is a good Metalink note on how to setup and configure 10g Application Server failover:

Hello All.............................I have following questions with regards to highly available implementation of SCOM 2012 R2:
    1.  Does it rely on Cluster?

  • High availability for AS forms & Reports

    Hi,
i like to know the best solution for high availability of Oracle Application Server(10g) Forms & Reports Services ...as load balancing is not done for forms & reports with the oracle high availability solution( i guess i am rite).any suggestions
    thanks
    mish

Well, install Oracle AS Forms and Reports on two different nodes and configure your Forms and Reports services on both of them. Use a virtual host configuration to load balance (by hardware load balancer) to both hosts which are the resources. Use the webcache (standalone or the one that came with the install) to map the virtual host to the resources on the two hosts. Use REPORTS_SERVERMAP to map the name of the 'cluster' reports server to the local reports server, ie REPORTS_SERVERMAP=app:app1 on node 1 and REPORTS_SERVERMAP=app:app2 on node 2. Use REPORTS_SERVERMAP=app:app1;appl:appl1 to add more applications/reportservers. Set REPORTS_SERVERMAP in O_H/forms/servers/default.env and the application env files and under O_H/reports/conf/rwservlet.properties.

  • SharePoint Foundation 2013 - Can we use the foundation for intranet portal with high availability ( medium farm)

Today I had requirement, where we have to use the SharePoint Foundation 2013 (free version) to build an intranet portal ( basic announcement , calendar , department site , document management - only check-in check-out / Version).
Please help me regarding the license  and size limitations. ( I know the feature comparison of Standard / Enterprise) I just want to know only about the installation process and license.
6 Server - 2 App / 2 Web / 2 DB cluster ( so total license 6 windows OS license , 2 SQL Server license and Guess no sharepoint licenes)

    Thanks Trevor,
Is load balance service also comes in free license... So, in that case I can use SharePoint Foundation 2013 version for building a simple Intranet & DMS ( with limited functionality).  And for Workflow and content management we have to write code.
Windows Network Load Balancing (the NLB feature) is included as part of Windows Server and would offer high availability for traffic bound to the SharePoint servers. WNLB can only associate with up to 4 servers.

  • How to enable high availability on SQL Server 2005 with Windows Server 2008 Enterprise R2

    Dear Folks,
I would like to ask you about this thing. I'm working for IT department for bank in Myanmar. Our bank have up to 96 branches across all of Myanmar including H.O. We are using Microsoft SQL Server 2005 with Windows Server 2008 for our banking
information system. My main problem is having to backup and restore the database backup files every time the servers in branches goes down for whatever reasons. I want to deploy this feature of high availability and failover cluster using Windows Server 2008
and SQL Server 2005. Our branches have 2 Servers. One is for Primary and other is for Backup. What I want to do is that, I want to change Backup Server to Primary Server whenever the Primary Server goes down for whatever reasons. All the working data and databases
from Primary will immediately replicated into Backup Server along with all the IP information of Primary Server. Please give me step by step guide for this process.

    Try below

  • UOO sequencing along with WLS high availability cluster and fault tolerance

    Hi WebLogic gurus.
My customer is currently using the following Oracle products to integrate Siebel Order Mgmt to Oracle BRM:
    * WebLogic Server 10.3.1
    * Oracle OSB 11g
They use path service feature of a WebLogic clustered environment.
They have configured EAI to use the UOO(Unit Of Order) Weblogic 10.3.1 feature to preserve the natural order of subsequent modifications on the same entity.
They are going to apply UOO to a distributed queue for high availability.
    They have the following questions:
    1) When during the processing of messages having the same UOO, the end point becomes unavailable, and another node is available in order to migrate, there is a chance the UOO messages exist in the failed endpoint.
    2) During the migration of the initial endpoint, are these messages persisted?
By persisted we mean that when other messages arrive with the same UOO in the migrated endpoint this migrated resource contains also the messages that existed before the migration?
    3) During the migration of endpoints is the client receiving error messages or not?
I've found an entry on the WLS cluster documentation regarding fault tolerance of such solution.
Special Considerations For Targeting a Path Service
When the path service for a cluster is targeted to a migratable target, as a best practice, the path
service and its custom store should be the only users of that migratable target.
When a path service is targeted to a migratable target its provides enhanced storage of message
unit-of-order (UOO) information for JMS distributed destinations, since the UOO information
will be based on the entire migratable target instead of being based only on the server instance
    hosting the distributed destinations member.
Do you have any feedback to that?
My customer is worry about loosing UOO sequencing during migration of endpoints !!
    best regards & thanks,
    Marco

First, if using a distributed queue the Forward Delay attribute controls the number of seconds WebLogic JMS will wait before trying to forward the messages. By default, the value is set to −1, which means that forwarding is disabled. Setting a Forward Delay is incompatible with strictly ordered message processing, including the Unit-of-Order feature.
When using unit-of-order with distributed destinations, you should always send the messages to the distributed destination rather than to one of its members. If you are not careful, sending messages directly to a member destination may result in messages for the same unit-of-order going to more than one member destination and cause you to lose your message ordering.
When unit-of-order messages are processed, they will be processed in strict order. While the current unit-of-order message is being processed by a message consumer, the next message in the unit-of-order will not be delivered unless it is to the same transaction or session. If no message associated with a particular unit-of-order is processing, then a message associated with that unit-of-order may go to any session that’s consuming from the message’s destination. This guarantees that all messages will be processed one at a time and in order, and any rollback or recover will not prevent ordered processing of the messages.
The path service uses a persistent store to save the state of which member destination a particular unit-of-order is currently using. When a Path Service receives the first message for a particular unit-of-order bound for a distributed destination, it uses the normal JMS load balancing heuristics to select which member destination will handle the unit and writes that information into its persistent store. The Path Service ensures that a new UOO, or an old UOO that has no messages currently on any destination, can be enqueued anywhere in the cluster. Adding and removing member destinations will not disrupt any existing unit-of-order because the routing decision is made dynamically and those decisions are persistent.
If the Path Service is unavailable, any requests to create new units-of-order will throw the JMSOrderException until the Path Service is available. Information about existing units-of-order are cached in the connection factory and destination servers so the Path Service availability typically will not prevent existing unit-of-order messages from being sent or processed.
    Hope this helps.

  • Installing SAP ERP on DB2 with high availability

    Hey Gurus,
currently we're installing SAP ERP 6 EHP 6 based on DB2 for unix and windows, this is done using the high availability option on AIX 7.1 and IBM's power HA.
    We have the following architecture:
              Node A:
1-A host for ASCS, ERS and CI.
2-A host for the DB instance.
The same with node B replacing CI with DI.
Please advise on how to proceed with installation.
Also I need a bit of clarification regarding how to share (or export) the file systems between the hosts of the same node so that the CI can and DB can be connected, since as far as I know the DB installation will ask for the profile directory through the installation, while the CI will ask to see the db file systems as well as the db instance.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Ahmed,
    For your query
Also I need a bit of clarification regarding how to share (or export) the file systems between the hosts of the same node so that the CI can and DB can be connected, since as far as I know the DB installation will ask for the profile directory through the installation, while the CI will ask to see the db file systems as well as the db instance.

    1. Install Hyper-v on both and create 3 VM on each as
-On Host A- 1 VM for DC, 1 VM for File server with DFS namespace and replication for file server HA and 1 VM for Exchange 2013 with CAS/MBX with DAG and DNS RR for Exchange HA
-On Host B - 1 VM for ADC, 1 VM for File server DFS member for above and 1 VM for Exchange 2013 CAS/MBX with DAG member
I have read on internet about new features called scale out file server (SoFS) in Windows 2012 Server but not sure that will be preferred for file sharing.

    Best regards,
DFS is by far the best way to implement any sort of file server. Because a) failover is not fully transparent and does not happen always (say not on copy ) b) DFS cannot replicate open files so if you edit a big file and have node rebooted you're going to
lose ALL transactions/updates you've applied c) actually slows down the config. See:
    DFS for failover
    http://help.globalscape.com/help/wafs3/using_microsoft_dfs_for_failover.htm

    DFS Performance
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/filecab/archive/2009/08/22/windows-server-dfs-namespaces-performance-and-scalability.aspx
SoFS a) requires shared storage to run and you don't have one b) does not support generic workloads
(only Hyper-V and SQL Server) and c) technically makes sense to expand SAS JBOD or existing FC SAN to numerous Hyper-V clients over 10 GbE w/o need to invest money into SAS switches and HBAs and FC HBAs and new licenses FC ports. Making long story short:
    SoFS is NOT YOUR CASE.

For now you need to find some shared storage to be a back end for your hypevisor config (SAS JBOD from supported list, virtual SAN from multiple vendors like for example StarWind see below, make sure you review ALL the vendors) and then you create a failover
SMB 3.0 share for your file server workload. See:

  • High Availability with two 5508 WLAN controllers?

    Dear all,
we are considerung to implement a new wireless solution based on Cisco WLC 5508 and 1262N Access Points. We are planning to purchase about 30 access points and have two options: Either purchase one WLC 5508-50 or, for redundacy, two 5508-25 controllers.
Is it possible to configure two WLC 5508 as a high availability solution so all Access Pointes are distributed over both WLCs and in the case one WLC breaks the other one manages all APs?
If we have 30 access points and one of two WLC 5508-25 breaks of course not all 30 but only 25 access points can be managed by the remaining one. Is there some sort of control to choose which access points shall be managed and which not?
How does such a configuration look like in general, is the implementation of a two controller setup rather complex or straight forward?
    Thanks!
    Michael

    Dear Nicloas,
thanks for your reply. We have an offer where two 5508-25 are only a little more expensive than one 5508-50. So I think it's better so spend a little more money and have a backup WLC. Otherwise, if the one and only WLC breaks, all APs are unusable which would not be acceptable for us.
Regarding roaming - not all access points will distribute the same WLAN. Actually we will have one wireless network with 18 access points for our warehouse and 12 access points for the internal and guests network. Therefore no roaming will happen between those APs. In this case I could use one WLC for the 18 warehouse access points and 12 for the internal network. In the case one controller breaks, I could use the remaining one for the important warehouse systems (i.e. by using the priority system).
Regarding the configuration: If I understand correctly I configure both controllers exactly the same (except for the name and IP address of course) and put both controllers in the same mobility group - and that's really it? Sounds great!
I have one general question regarding the new WLC controllers: Is it true that communication between the WLC and the APs is now done on Layer 3 only so all APs need an IP address? I'm asking because currently we are still using an Cisco 4112 WLC which operates in Layer 2 mode. So I guess with the new WLC, I have to configure DHCP option 43 with the management IP address of the WLC, right? I also guess I can manually move APs from one to another WLC once they have joined a controller for the first time?
I'm ordering the book "Deploying and Troubleshooting Cisco Wireless LAN Controllers" now and guess this will answer most of my upcoming questions. Can I come back to you here in case I run into trouble with the configuration?
Thanks a lot for your help

  • Problems With the High Availability

    Hi all,
First of all, i'm sorry for my "bad" english, but i will to try to explain my problem as clairly as i can.
I'm using VDI 3.1.1 ,a configuration "High Availability with bundled MySQL" with a primary server and 2 secondary servers.
i'm trying to test the HA for the core VDI and FailOver for the VirtualBox, The HA works but i think with a timeout (=2minutes) that i want to reduce.
I found some troubles with the VirtualBox failover.
    Here is more explaination :
These Tests are done with the VRDP mode.
The first test after the installation&configuration, the failover works fine after the crash of server A, the desktops migrate and restart in the other server (the server B)
The second test : i reboot the server A, and i want to test again with shuting down the server B (crash). the desktops migrate to the server A and they are with the state "running" but SRS can't deport the display (it loops on the authentication screen) ... The VM is running and i can access to it with the Remote Desktop Connection.
When i looked to the logs, i found that the SRS is always looking for the VM on the server who crashed (Server B). I looked to the vda-client command for the user concerned and it shows me that the host is the server who crashed (Server B) with the old port. I opened the MySQL,vda database and i looked the datas on the t_desktop* table, the fields* ip-or-dns* and port *were not updated when the VMs migrates. i update the two fields with an update request with the correct host (of the server A) and the new port where the VM has migrate, and the display comes in 1s.
So, the VM migrate well, but Datas on MySQL Database were not updated.
For the WRDP mode, everything works fine, because the SRS uses the IP of the VM to deport the display, not the host and port like in VRDP mode.
I test this with different configuration :
    * HA with bundled Mysql : primary server and two secondary servers. The two secondary servers contains the VDI core and the VirtualBoxes.
    * HA with bundled Mysql : the 3 vdi Cores are virtualized on a server, and Two Servers with only the VirtualBoxes.
    * One Server with VDI Core, and Two Servers with only the VirtualBoxes to test only the failover of virtualbox.
All of this tests gave the same results.
    My questions :
1 - After a crash of a server and after reboot, is there anything to do? (i checked all the vda services "database, webservices ..." and everything is ok after the reboot).
2 - Is there a bug for the HA with the VRDP mode?
3 - Is anybody had the same problems? if yes, what is the solution?
4 - How can i reduce the timeout for the HA of VDI Core? is there any process for that?
Thank you all for your help , and again sorry for my bad english, i know i have to improve it :)

I am using VDI version 3.2. Virtualization layer is Virtuabl Box.
setup is 1 x VDI server, 2 x virtual box host , remote mysql database and shared storage backend i.e NAS
The Virtualbox session / vm does not fail over, period !
When i pull the plug on the 1st Virtualbox, all the desktops session on the down server, remains on the server
and did not failover to the other one.
Seriously , have any one managed to get the HA working ? anyone ?
see below for the cli output.

  • Problem in Webcenter Portal application with High Availability changes

    Jdeveloper Version: 11.1.1.5
    JROCKET
MDS is pointing to IBM/DB2 database.
Weblogic Domain 10.3 with 1 cluster - 2 manage servers.
    BigIP - Load Balancing
    Database: IBM DB2
I am facing below issues in webcenter portal application after making high availability changes.
    1. "A connection to the server has failed" Status - 12152
    12031
    404
    2. Because of Inactivity, session is timeout - ADF_FACES_30108 exception.
The above exceptions are occuring randomly in the application. It occurs either at login page or inside the application clicking on any link/button.
I have made high availability changes as per the below blog:
    http://rimmidis.blogspot.com/2012/02/adf-application-running-on-clustered.html
    Any help is really appreciated

Fixed "Because of Inactivity.." popup message by adding more tokens. The PS4 Webcenter portal application default value for CLIENT_STATE_MAX_TOKENS is 3, we increased to 15 that fixed the popup message.
There was another popup message "Connection to the server failed, with status = 404, 12152..., which resulted in a bug in the product. The PortletServletContextListener was throwing classcastexception and that was causing this popup message.
Once again, we have noticed these popup messages only when we tried to make our application high available.
