Asmlib and oracleasm permission question for 11gr2 RAC install
Dear All,
I am trying to install 11G RAC on 2 oracle linux 6 machines (it is 2 virtual machines but I hope the principle applied).
I use asmlib package to create sharable disk.
I encounter a lot of user/group permission issue, so I decide to use oracle:oinstall to install my grid software.
Here are my questions:
1. when run oracleasm configuration -iDefault user to own the driver interface []: oracle
Default group to own the driver interface []: dba <<<<<<<<<< what group should I use? I see people use oinstall, dba...
2. after mounting /dev/oracleasm directory by using /usr/sbin/oracleasm init, what directory permission should I set?
it is root:root after mount.
I tried to run installer for grid, if I don't change /dev/oracleasm to 766, the ASM disks don't even show up.
Any suggestions?

If you are using single user for grid and database I would set oinstall as the group owner.
You don't need to set permission on /dev/oracleasm.. asmlib will take care of it
Have a read http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/install.112/e22489/storage.htm#CDECEBGH for more information.
Hope it helps

Need 11gr2 RAC install Guide on Solaris 10 x86 using containers and NFS
I'm looking for an 11gr2 RAC install Guide on Solaris 10 x86 using 2-3 containers. I need to have the NFS server reside in the global zone or on a 3rd container visable to the two rac containers.
Please share me installation guide!
Thank you!
PS - I currently have run into an install issue -
Can't change ownership on /oracle/products/11.2.0/ocr/: not owner at /oracle/app/11.2.0/grid/crs/install/crsconfig_lib.pm line 5014.
I suspect the NFS share params from the NFS server in the global zone are not 100% correct to the two rac zones/containers.Have you visited Oracle Support Services website (formerly metalink) to determine if your desired configuration is supported?
Last time I looked it was not.
That said Oracle database installation guides are fully documented online.

11gR2 Grid Infrastructure and 11gR2 RAC install as separate users (RH 5)
We are about to set up a few new RH 5 clusters and are trying to make a decision if we should install 11gR2 Grid Infrastructure and 11gR2 RAC as the same user (oracle) or as separate users (grid and oracle) as per Oracle documentation.
I would like to know what other people are doing and their experiences with this.
Here are some concerns that we have:
1) Does Oracle support has an 11gR2 cluster environment where grid infrastructure and oracle database are installed as separate users ? I have been to a few Oracle 11gR2 demos and they always have a simple install where everything is installed as a single user.
2) Potential permission issues that we might hit iif we use separate users, for example
- grid control agent - which user do we install it as and will it be able to access both grid and oracle files ?
- database listener will run as grid user. Is this going to cause any permission issues ?
Thanks in advance for your answersIt is all dependent on your business whether your business needs to separate between privileged user for storage administrator (ASM) or database level. It is recommended to have user separation but not mandatory.
see http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/install.112/e17212/toc.htm for the details
permission issues might happen if the configuration is not correct. for example you might see ORA-12537 when configuring the system
Hope this helps -
ASM vs RAID for 11gR2 RAC Environment
Hi There!
We are planning to install 11GR2 RAC with two nodes Cluster on LINUX in Our Environment.
Operating System: OEL 5.4
In our hardware we got two dell Servers with 16GB RAM on each plus On SAN side we have only 8 disk (173GB) left for RAC Cluster Setup. I am going to create to database (LIVE/UAT) on This Cluster Setup. Currently Our Production DB size is 6GB and I assume for coming 5 year it will not go beyond 100GB And I keep UAT size 15GB fix with No changes. So how you get the best ASM performance by using my all Resources.
My question:
1) Which is best solution for ASM and RAID in our storage Environment?
2) How many Disk group I Create for Both Databases (UAT/LIVE)?
3) How many disks should I allocate in Each Disk Group with which RAID Option or if any suggesting for LUN, How do I create LUNS across the Disk which I got?
4) I know oracle recommended Two DISK Group DATA&FRA is there any other suggestion for CRS, REDO, and TEMP FILE?
Thanks for your Assintance.
Hemesh. My first question was : Which RAID Option(0,1,5,0+1) I choose with ASM ?Well, it doesnt matter for ASM. At least in your configuration with 8 disks.
RAID0is not an option - forget about it. RAID1 (or combined with more than two disks and an overlayed RAID0 which makes an RAID 1+0) might be an option for write-intensive databases. RAID5 is more for read-intensive due to the RAID5-write-hole but offers "more" capacity at the cost of slower write speed.
I recommended to stick with RAID1 (thus mirroring two disks) and exporting them to ASM rather than creating one big RAID1+0 over all of your disks and exporting the storage as one big chuck to ASM for manageability. If you want to add storage lateron your perfect in line with Oracles recommendations to have equal size LUNs in ASM with two mirrored disks. If you create on big RAID 1+0 and lateron add two disks you have a LUN of 600 GB size and one of 170 GB size...thats a big mismatch.
But If i create TWO disk group then, is there good practice to offer them to both (UAT/LIVE) databases.?Normally there is a separation between UAT and P on storage and on server level. In your case it might be "ok" to place everything in the same disk group. This mainly depends on which database puts the most load on the disk subsystem.

Configuring networking for 11Gr2 RAC
Hi - I have a couple of questions regarding networking and RAC install.
Please could someone clarify what the Virtual IP requirement is for a RAC node, and how one would actually set this up on OEL5 using a DNS server.
All input appreciated - thxHi,
I have a couple of questions regarding networking and RAC install.
Please could someone clarify what the Virtual IP requirement is for a RAC node, and how one would actually set this up on OEL5 using a DNS server. You will need the concept before attempting to install because it is not possible to explain the concept of Oracle Clusterware Network (VIP/SCAN) with a few lines.

GL AND AR datasource and data targets - question for BI 7.0
Folks,
It has been sometime I did GL, AP and wanted to know if this still holds good
GL Balance : Extract via 0FI_GL_6 and load it to 0FIGL_C01 with or whihout an ODS OFIGL_O06.
GL Line itms: Extract via 0FI_GL_4 and load to ODS 0FIGL_O02.
Similiarly use AP_6 and AP_4 Data sources for Accounts Payable. I am assuming GL and AP Data sources are coupled.
Now has anything changed in BI 7.0 or because of ECC5 or ECC6.
For All the above I did not see any transformation BI Content I only still see 3.x flow.
whats up with 0FIGL_C10 and 0FI_GL_10 ?.
At the end of the day I only need GL balance and their line items. So what should I use ?.
thanks
GmanHi GMAN,
1) GL and AP datasources extract from 2 different sets of OLTP tables. They are NOT coupled
from BW extraction pointof view....But In R3...when a financial posting is made to a GL
account....a related posting made into AP tables......
2) In GL or AP functionality nothing has changed due to: BI 7.0 or because of ECC5 or ECC6.
3) In the new Business Content Release...."SAP NW 7.0 BI Content Add-on 3 SP06"....
SAP gave new cubes, ODS etc....

11gr2 Rac Install: Stuck at the DNS SCAN portion.
Hi Guys, it's Xev.
Ok, I have followed his install guide to the dot. http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/11g/oracle-db-11gr2-rac-installation-on-oel5-using-virtualbox.php#install_grid_infrastructure
During the Grid Infrastructure install portion, it's stops me and tells me that "No Locally adapter is defined" when I am right here, it won't let me past this point right below...
http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/11g/images/ol5-112-rac/47-grid-ssh-connectivity.jpg
Now, this install document, tells you to put the 3 SCAN Ip addresses in the /ect/hosts file and does not tell you that you need to install DNS on a server and configure it, or does he? The way he says it to
me just doesn't make sense.
My question is to only people that have actually installed 11gr2 RAC using VirtualBox and using oracle linux 5.8.
He says in the install document this right here, but some how i think he is just flat out wrong.
I quote from the install document,,,
If you are not using DNS, the "/etc/hosts" file must contain the following information.
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
# Public
192.168.0.101 ol5-112-rac1.localdomain ol5-112-rac1
192.168.0.102 ol5-112-rac2.localdomain ol5-112-rac2
# Private
192.168.1.101 ol5-112-rac1-priv.localdomain ol5-112-rac1-priv
192.168.1.102 ol5-112-rac2-priv.localdomain ol5-112-rac2-priv
# Virtual
192.168.0.103 ol5-112-rac1-vip.localdomain ol5-112-rac1-vip
192.168.0.104 ol5-112-rac2-vip.localdomain ol5-112-rac2-vip
# SCAN
192.168.0.105 ol5-112-scan.localdomain ol5-112-scan
192.168.0.106 ol5-112-scan.localdomain ol5-112-scan
192.168.0.107 ol5-112-scan.localdomain ol5-112-scan
Note. The SCAN address should not really be defined in the hosts file. Instead is should be defined on the DNS to round-robin between 3 addresses on the same subnet as the public IPs. For this installation, we will compromise and use the hosts file. This is not possible if you are using 11.2.0.2 onward.
If you are using DNS, then only the first line needs to be present in the "/etc/hosts" file. The other entries are defined in the DNS, as described here. Having said that, I typically include all but the SCAN addresses..
END QUOTE.
So, Guys, what does he actually mean with this? MY Grid install fails when it's trying to resolved the scan. DO I need to install DNS like he gives in the link above, OR can the install work with the SCAN in the /ect/hosts file? I Personally think this is just wrong, and you have to have DNS working 3 ip round-robin for the SCAN to work.
Please only reply to this thread if you have actually successfully installled 11rg2 Rac (11.0.1) on Oracle Linux 5.8 using VirtualBox, or actually know where i am going wrong by your own experience, not just goggle searching.....but you got it to work....
I am begging on my knees for help with this, since I have been at this for weeks now.
If you help me through this, I'll be your friend

Now, this is what I for all the files that I have configured......I hope they are right?
Do i need to run the named DNS server on both nodes? It's running on both nodes now...and the service starts..
Here are all my files that pertain to the DNS configuration for RAC.
These are the files that are on "rac" the primary node....

11gR2 RAC Install Doc on HP-UX
Hi ,
My client is planning to go for 11gR2 on RAC ASM.I know the normal steps how we will follow for RAC install on Linux.
In the case of HP-UX , It does need some packages before going for install.
Please guide me the steps and procedure how we will follow the 11gR2 RAC on HP-UX.
Sharing any real time or oracle doc is helpful to me.
Thanks & Regards,
SunandI raised the same thread under Grid->Install
Thanks to all -
Is ASM necessary for 11gr2 crs install ?
Hi,
I am about to install 11gr2 CRS (now grid ?) on Oracle E Linux 5.6.
I have been doing research and it is not clear to me.
Question 1) Is ASM mandatory as part f the install ? (I would prefer not to install ASM and just use OCFS2 for the database files).
Question 2) Can I use OCFS2 for a common location for the software binaries as well ?
Thanks,
Shawn.Question 1) Is ASM mandatory as part f the install ? (I would prefer not to install ASM and just use OCFS2 for the database files). No,
Question 2) Can I use OCFS2 for a common location for the software binaries as well ?Yes, upgrade OCFS2 to at least version 1.4.1

IMO, your /etc/hosts should contain scan entry because it cannot be resolved here.
BTW, /etc/hosts should be identical on all nodes.
See my production settings (my PLWRS-GS-SCAN is registeres in RR way in corporation DNS and resolves to 3 IP's):
# Public
10.154.18.123 plwrs-db1.emea.nsn-net.net plwrs-db1 db1
10.154.18.125 plwrs-db2.emea.nsn-net.net plwrs-db2 db2
# Private
192.168.2.101 plwrs-db1-priv.emea.nsn-net.net plwrs-db1-priv
192.168.2.102 plwrs-db2-priv.emea.nsn-net.net plwrs-db2-priv
# Virtual
10.154.18.121 plwrs-db1-vip.emea.nsn-net.net plwrs-db1-vip
10.154.18.122 plwrs-db2-vip.emea.nsn-net.net plwrs-db2-vip
# SCAN
#10.154.18.118 PLWRS-GS-SCAN.emea.nsn-net.net PLWRS-GS-SCAN
#10.154.18.119 PLWRS-GS-SCAN.emea.nsn-net.net PLWRS-GS-SCAN
#10.154.18.120 PLWRS-GS-SCAN.emea.nsn-net.net PLWRS-GS-SCAN
If you don't use DNS server, or for testing purposes, set one SCAN entry only in hosts file , e.g.:
10.154.18.118 PLWRS-GS-SCAN.emea.nsn-net.net PLWRS-GS-SCAN

Need objective sql and pl/sql question for preparing interview
Hey buddy please help me, now I am preparing interview of sql and pl/sql where asking objective question, so I need online site for preparing interview, your suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
Have you tried searching using one of the many Internet search engines?
I expect that there are many kinds of sites out there that may cater to you.
The only other recommendation I would have would be to review the documentation at http://tahiti.oracle.com. Probably the SQL Language Reference, PL/SQL Reference, Application Developer's Guide, and Concept's Guide. -
