Aspect Ratio and file extension

Using the AC_Quicktime.js:
If I have a .mov file and change the extension to .tst or something ambiguous quicktime can still play the movie. If however I put the parameter "scale","aspect" quicktime seems to no longer be able to tell that this is a .mov file.
Any thoughts? Is there another parameter I need to use to make it work, or will I need the proper file extensions to play a movie in aspect mode?
Thanks.

I changed the file extension so when I upload the file to the active directory that gets sync'ed with the back end software there would be no partial files.
As intended:
Step 1) Upload the file with its actual file extension.
Step 2) Change the extension to .tst to let the back end system know it's ready for download.
Plenty of work arounds here for me obviously, just they require an extra step. For example.
Step 1) Change extension to .tst
Step 2) Upload File
Step 3) Change extension to actual extension so backend knows its ready to download.
Ya the tofit reacts the same way, I haven't tried specifying the third scale parameter option, but if I leave the scale parameter out QT can play the movie with no problem (just not expanding with different resolutions). I just wondered if there was another parameter value pair I needed to make it not worry about extension, it's not a problem I can't get around though.
Also, not sure this will make a difference, but i've been using a width and height of 100%.

  • Is there a way to set the aspect ratio or file type in the camera for video settings?

I always convert my .MOV videos to WMV so I can upload to my web site.  However, with my new iPhone (iOS7), the vidoes are distorted due to aspect ratio issues.  I'd like to set the output aspect ratio and.or file type when I create a new video on my iPhone 5s.

There is no user setting for this in the native iOS app. It is possible that if you use some other 3rd party app you can make some changes to that, but I'm not sure. There are also no settings for changing the file type on the phone itself.
I've not experienced any issues with distortion on mine, but it could be your converter. Have you tried another one?

  • Pixel Aspect Ratio and ciphering type of footage-CS6

    CS6- updated 12\18\13  V-11.03
    Hi All,
    A few questions about:
Pixel Aspect Ratio and ciphering type of footage. Bare with me as I touch on two different aspects of what I feel are related:
    1. Setting up a Comp-
Having AE decide on the correct footage being used- Via >Import footage,.(to Folder) then drag it on, or into the 'make comp icon' where AE is supposed to do a 'best guess' for the comp settings. Be it square pix or otherwise. What are the second value in brackets ? See pic
    2. Interpolation-
When using two diff footage sources- If using two different source footages in a comp. Is this where I should interplolate my footage to match the existing footage and the comp settings (If I have choosen NOT to pre-comp that secondary footage?)
    3. Seperating fields-
How come footage that a camera manufacturer claims to be shooting in Progressive 30 or 24p is showing up as interlaced in my comp's CP? The manual to the cam says 30p or 24p or 60i The footage was shot at 30p (for sure)
Here is a screen grab of AE's 'best guess' of that footage, showing it with an UPPER field render; indicative of HD Interlaced footage and then in the inerpolate settings - 'kinda confirming it.
Now for the way out- Render:
    4. If that is in fact Interlaced and I then want to reduce the size of that 1920 footage to 66% size... Do I need to do anything in particular at this point?
For some reason I am getting an error on my end when trying to export as an AVI and reducing size to 1280
    5. Is this from the Field render of interlaced challenge?
I ended  up with a couple of errors and then aborted the whole file and re-imported to start over with this error. Which happend again after a redoux
So I sent it over to Prem Pro to export those MTS Files as a movie and noted AGAIN the reference to Interlaced video. "upper and lower" Prem Pro was able to use the same MTS files and export a working movie. (so those files were not corrupt BTW) Yet Note PP's output reference to that footage again as Interlaced would be...
Thanks for any clarity on those "5" questions... NC

    Thanks for the details Rick.
Thanks for the insight on  #1
Ref #2, You should never change the interpretation of Pixel aspect ratio on footage  unless you know for a certainty that it is wrong. For example, open Photoshop or Illustrator and create a new document that is 720  X 480 pixels and AE will always interpret the image as rectangular pixels because that is a standard rectangular pixel frame size.
Unless you specifically created the image in Photoshop with rectangular pixels it is square pixels so the interpretation must be changed to avoid distortion.
    --Did you mean to write:
Unless you specifically created the image in Photoshop with SQUARE pixels using  a rectangle layout?  I am not trying to bust your blz here, I am trying to understand the unknown. (for me)
So it may very well be AE mis-guessing the footage and the Upper first is a mistake on AE's part and I need to test it to find out? On that note...
Ref#3, Separating fields must be done right. Some 1080P footage is interpreted as having fields. This may be incorrect and if there is a question you MUST test the footage. Test the footage by making sure that the fields are being separated
How do I make sure the fields are being seperated? Does the window as in pic two from the top of my post confirm that or is there another test?
    Then I do the following:
then selecting the footage in the project panel and choosing Create Composition from Selection, then opening the Composition settings, doubling the frame rate and stepping through the footage a frame at a time. If the footage is really interlaced then each of the frames will be different.  (IE:  29.94 to 59.94fps) OK
If the field order is reversed then motion will be in the right direction then reverse, then go back to the right direction. ---I did not understand?  Are you referring to Upper and Lower reverse?   Direction, as in fwd and back in Time line? Sorry unlclear on my end...
Oh and HFR footage? HFR? High frame rate??
One last thing, Do all cameras shoot anamorphic, or could they as AE is showing my MTS files; are Square? (1.00) Pic #1
    @Dave-  You -
At 1080, a lot of footage is interlaced, and evidently your camera made interlaced footage
Me- How do you know? because of the 2nd pic and upper field first indication?
You-Even if you know for a fact that it was shot 30p, the camera captures the entire frame... but it records it as two fields. They give it a fancy name: Progressive Segmented Frame.
Me- Is this typical false advertisement of the sales divison of brands like not telling you what CMOS or CCD is in a cam just slapping HD 1080p on the side of the box?
You-AE will treat it as an entire frame if you interpret it as having a field order of None.
Me- Won't that be a problem mis leading AE on an interpret?
Thanks Gents for the precise details.

  • How do I control aspect ratio and pixel dimension in iMovie 10

When you created a new movie in iMovie 9 the program would ask if you wanted 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio and when you saved the movie it would ask about the size of the file and pixel dimensions.  How do I controll these in iMovie 10?

I think they screwed up - but I have solved the problem by deleting it and reinstalling version 9.0.9 which you can get from the support at http://www.apple.com/uk/support/mac-apps/imovie/
Frankly I don't see the point of Theatre and I don't use iCloud so reverting back to a version that actually works seemed a good option!

  • FileSaveService ignored the file name and file extensions

I am using the JNLP API to build a JWS application. When using the FileSaveService, I found it automaticlly ignored the file name and file extensions I passed to the 'FileSaveService.saveFileDialog()'.
My code is like the following:
    String[] xtns = {"csv"};
    FileContents fileContents = fileSaveService.saveFileDialog(
".", xtns, stream, "testFile"); Im running this application in JRE version 1.6.0_20-b02 in Windows XP.
Although in the JNLP API, it said the file name and file extension 'might be ignored by the JNLP client', I still wonder if anyone has a better solution for this?
    Thanks very much :)

  • Automatically open file based on MIME type and file extension

We have an app that is registered to handle custom MIME type and file extension. This works perfectly on IE and FireFox causing them to download the file to a temp folder and then launch our app associated with MIME type and file extension with command line to the downloaded file. On Safari however this does not work. It opens up a download window and shows that it has downloaded the file with no option to open it.

  • Cropping in PS while Maintaining Aspect Ratio and DPI

I shoot the Nikon D3, RAW (.NEF) and convert through ACR. Through ACR, the DPI is set to 300 DPI; the DPI caries over to Photoshop.
I crop in Photoshop using the crop tool (not marquee). To maintain 2:3 or 3:2 aspect ratios, the crop tool requires the width and height in inches or pixels. If specifying resolution, the document size will crop to that DPI, if not; the DPI is derived from pixel dimensions.
In my case, I’ve been cropping at 2in by 3in (or reverse for orientation). The resulting “real” image pixel dimensions are still very high (correct to crop size) but the document size reported in PS is 2in by 3in with a wildly high DPI. By changing the resolution back to 300 DPI through Photoshop, the document size returns to normal. Therefore the picture has not lost anything; it appears to only be a function of the Meta data. The pixel dimensions remain constant while the document size and DPI change.
It apears that you canot specify an aspect ratio via the crop tool without defining it in inches or cm. You can do it with the marquee tool but the marquee tool sucks for cropping. You can however crop in ACR with the crop tool by merely specifying the aspect ratio (not in inches or cm). In summary, the PS crop tool is based in inches or cm while the ACR crop tool is simply aspect ratio.
What I can do to crop in PS while maintaining aspect ratio and defined DPI. Is there a work-around, magic trick, or something else I can do to fool the PS crop tool into an aspect ratio not based in inches or cm?

    Just to summarize:
Setting a dimensioned ratio (e.g., 2 in by 3 in for Width and Height) in the Crop tool without filling in a Resolution value yields a crop with the desired aspect ratio, and without any resampling.
There is no way to specify a ratio with the crop tool, specifically, as the OP has requested, though in a future version perhaps specifying simple numbers there without any units might be a way Adobe could facilitate this.  It would be a nice addition and with little downside.
I guess what I don't understand, though, is why the OP cares about the "high" resulting dpi value?  It's just a number.
Expanding on this, the Resolution is nothing but a metadata value that can be changed at will (e.g., through Image - Image Size... - uncheck Resample) at any time in the future.  There is ALWAYS a Resolution value associated with the image, both before and after the crop (though the crop tool may end up changing it; so what?).  In short, the Resolution is just an arbitrary figure until such time as the user wants to use the image for a purpose (e.g. printing).
Always think in terms of pixel dimensions (number of pixels horizontally and vertically) while editing, then think about dpi right before publishing.  It's hard to go wrong this way.

  • What is the aspect ratio and fps for video in Connect 9?

I'm trying to find any definitive details on the aspect ratio and fps supported by Connect 9.  It is well documented for 8 that it was 640x480 at 20 fps.  Is that the same for 9?  Or has that improved?

The supported resolution and frame rates for video in the Video pod have not changed with Connect 9.

  • What is aspect ratio and how can you change it?

Please refer to my other post for more information on these photos. The photos I am referring to are the ones that appear blank in the edit screen.
When I try to export these photos to facebook using the exporter, it says that IPhoto can only deal with photos with an aspect ratio of 3:1 or lower, and that the photos selected have a greater aspect ratio. What is aspect ratio and if possible, how do you change it? This may be directly linked to my other problem with the same pics.

I'm having the same trouble. Zapplications will upload only 1920x1920 photos. With iPhoto I can't get past the automatic ratio of 1920x1440!!! There MUST be some way to customize photo size on iPhoto!! Please help!! I've tried cropping the photo to a square and still can't get past this ratio thing.

  • Captivate videos - aspect ratio and skin

    1. When I import video into captivate, it correctly keeps the same width and height of the source video IF I do not use the haloSkin. If I use the haloSkin (which is always visible and creates a frame around the video), the video itself shrinks to put the skin around it, but it also loses its aspect ratio and becomes squished vertically. There's no easy way to adjust the video so it uses the proper aspect ratio or even width and height without manually eyeballing it. Am I missing something?
    2. Are the video skins customizable? If I wanted to do something simple like change the haloSkin to be colored black instead of white, is that possible?
    Thanks,
    Keith

    1) The haloSkin subtracts 20 px from the width and 50 px from the height of event videos, which is not only counter-intuitive but obnoxious because it does indeed mess up the aspect ratio of your video as you noted. So a 640x480 video object with the skin applied has a video area of 620x430. Fortunately the 20 and 50 are absolute, and don't change with the size of the video object. This means that you can just add 20 to the width and 50 to the height of the video object to get your video back to the correct size. (a video object with dimensions 660x530 and the haloSkin applied has a video area of 640x480)
    2) I'm unaware of any way to edit the skins.

  • Aspect Ratio and Pixel Aspect Ratio

I am importing P2 footage and wondering what my sequence settings should be? As in Aspect Ratio and Pixel Aspect Ratio would need to be? Do I need to ask the DOP what settings on the P2 have been used when filming?

If you have FCP 6 then when you drop a clip into the timeline it will ask you if you want to configure the sequence to match...just click YES.
But you should know what format they shot. Find that out then choose the Easy Setup that matches, and make a new sequence. Or let FCP 6 and 7 do that for you, like I mentioned.

  • A slightly different problem with aspect ratio and DVD Maker

I am converting VHS movies to DVD. All are 4:3. Using Microsoft Movie Maker, I create the desired final result, a WMV file that plays perfectly--aspect ratio, sound, whatever.
The problem comes when I use DVD Maker to create the DVD. The picture gets squeezed pretty much to a square (from the 4:3 original). DVD Maker correctly shows 4:3 as the desired ratio.
Ironically (considering the solution offered in several similar posts), when I convert that WMV file to AVI, and _then_ use DVD Maker, all appears fine. My only complaint at this point is that the result is "window-boxed." That is, there is large black space
    on all four sides.
I see nothing in DVD Maker to adjust (in hopes that the original WMV might work for me), but just thought I'd ask.

    Hi,
There’s similar thread discuss the DVD maker for 4:3 or 16:9 you can refer:

  • QT Pro movie aspect ratio and masking

    Hello,
This might be beyond the scope of Quicktime Pro. But I'm looking for a way to place a jpg/png with an alpha channel (cut out) into quicktime. Then be able to add a quicktime to be seen through the image. But the kicker is to change the aspect ratio of the movie instead of the still image.
In Pro, I can add a masked image into the movie, but can't control the ratio of the movie and image separately.
I can do this in Final Cut & Final Cut Express but would like to find a way for others to do this with a less expensive or free software.
Any ideas how to change the movie's aspect ratio in QTPro while keeping the mask's ratio the same?
Or is there another open-source software to do this?
    Thanks ahead of time,
    Adam

A "mask" is just a black and white image file sized to the dimensions of the video.
Adding a PNG (JPEG doesn't support alpha channels) file to the entire video would allow you to adjust both track dimensions independently via the Movie Properties window.

  • Aspect Ratio and Itunes/Apple TV

So I recently bought an apple tv and have set it up in my room. I have been trying to play my tv shows that I already owned on my computer. My movie files are programed as 4:3 but in any other video player I can set it to play in 16:9 and they look exactly how they should. So now if I try to play my movies through itunes so I can see them on my Apple Tv they are all smashed. Is anyone else having this problem? There is no way to change the aspect ratio in Itunes. So I either have to wait until they make that an option, Watch the movies on my laptop, or watch them all smashed on my Tv through Itunes. I hope they fix this soon

    Welcome to the Apple Communities.
If you don't wish to re-encode everything, the AR is controlled by flags rather than being encoded into the movie video data, you can change these flags as indeed you do when you watch them on your mac. I'm not sure which application you use to change the flags on your mac but it may well allow you to save the changes. if it doesn't there are a number of applications such as Quicktime 7, which will let you save them.
