Aspect ratio can't be changed?

I've been animating my menus at 16:9 but when I import it into encore the option to select 16.9 is grayed out...is there a way around this? Thanks.

Standard definition video on DVD uses non-square pixels.
You should be working with a widescreen PAL DV preset in After Effects, and export a 720x576 video with with PAR of 1.422 or 1.46 (the latter depending upon if you are using AE CS4).

  • Aspect Ratios - Can we go full screen?

All the TV shows I have are in an aspect ratio that do not play in full screen. I tried changing the aspect ratio on my TV but the problem lies with the the actual shows. Is there a way I can play them in fullscreen? (like I can with my DVD's for example, even if they are widescreen.) Please let me know if there is a way or if I am just stuck the way they are. Thank you!

Well, see the content does play "correctly" on the HDTV - things are in the correct aspect ratios, which is why I answered as I did above. HDTVs are the future market - analog is being phased out by law and eventually all TVs will need to be able to receive HD content. So I think that it's smart that Apple is building for future markets and not past markets.
As far as content goes in the iTunes store - I think that it's more a function of a balance between file size/download time vs. quality of image. The more recent downloads from the store are of a MUCH greater quality then the original TV show downloads, and the file sizes are proportionately bigger. But until we can make 1/2 GB file download in less than an hour over DSL, then we will have to continue to strike this balance.
In the long term, the bigger concern for me is that these files get HUGE and hard drive space is limited.
But going back to the original topic, content that is 16:9 on the iTunes store will download and be played as such. Content that is 4:3 will be portrayed correctly. I actually object to the idea of making a 4:3 image "stretched" to fit the 16:9 screen as well as "chopping" a 16:9 image to fit a 4:3; it's not how the director intended the product to be seen, and we should not try to override that artistic vision. More on these distinctions can be found at http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/anamorphic/welcome.html.

  • Please watch and see if you can tell me how to correct the aspect ratio

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shiFprOnbK4
This is an unfinished std. def video hence this issue I ran into which is just a fun video for my youth group kids I teach at my church. I am editing it in final cut pro 7 and if you see at about 35 seconds the aspect ratio changes whatever its doing with the picture there.
I have never ran into this problem before so I don't know if its something I may have selected on the camera accidentally or done wrong in FCP but I shot all the video the same day of course for this event of ours and all the other video is fine an in 16:9 or what was called the "letterbox" option on my Panasonic DVX100B.
Please help me correct it if you know how. Thank you very much in advance.

I can't watch the video as well. Not quite sure what trouble your having
Aspect ratios can be tricky and there are a few spots you can mess them up. First I would check to make sure that your sequence settings are the same aspect ratio as your original footage. I would also make sure your exporting with the correct aspect ratio as well. (If you’re using the quicktime conversion option. Sometimes depending on your settings options like 16:9 are not turned on by default and you need to check them before exporting.)
Also if you can change the aspect ratio in FCP regardless of your sequence's aspect ratio is. Under your distort tab there is a aspect ratio option. +33 will make your footage 4:3 and -33 will make your footage anamorphic. However this will only stretch your footage. This method is only useful for when you can to place 4:3 footage into a 16:9 sequence without it appearing distorted and stretched

  • Changing pixel aspect ratio during cropping (LR3.2)

When I crop sometimes the pixel aspect ratio changes here. I.e. the pic get stretched in horizontal or vertical way/or compressed. Any body seeing this also? After some time it does change to normal, but it makes cropping rather difficult when in a hurry.

I'm not sure I understand your problem, but I think what bothers you is the technique that has been in place in LR2 already for switching between landscape and potrait format of the crop, which in LR3 can be acomplished by the X keyboard shortcut.
Moving your mouse horizontally or vertically on a locked aspect ratio, the format will change from portrait to landscape or vice versa. To enlarge or diminish the size of the crop, you have to move the mouse diagonally.

  • Premiere Pro CC Video Aspect Ratio is changed on render

We have a really weird problem in Premiere. Once you add a few filters and change the scale of a clip and then render it, it changes the aspect ratio.  The aspect ratio has no been changed in scale.  Any ideas?

I'm having a problem that sounds very similar, but I don't understand how you fixed it.  Can you explain further please?  My video looks fine, but when I render there is a small black bar on the right side (but only on the parts that needed rendering), so I'm assuming that must be changing the aspect ratio (the video jumps to the left a little).  I exported the footage without rendering it, but it obviously does that for you upon export and it's on my final video.  I would really appreciate some help if you know how to fix this!  Thanks much!!

  • Changing cropping aspect ratio

    Hi all;
I want to crop a picture not using a standard aspect ratio.
(ie want to change the width (or height) without the other changing.
    Any thoughts please.
    Thanks Mark

    Mark,
set the crop style to "Custom" or to "Do not constrain". Then you can change one dimension without the other dimension changing too.

  • Viewport Node: Changes Aspect Ratio: Causes Skewing - Why?

    Hello!
I'm trying to create simple zooms on photos and news articles for a documentary. So far, I've been using a Zoom node plugged into a Viewport node, which usually works just fine.
However, on some photos the Viewport script will randomly switch from a 1920x1080 aspect ratio to, e.g. 1919x1080. This causes the rendered Quicktime files to have a "skewed" effect on those random frames where the aspect ratio has changed.
Note: The aspect ratio appears to be changing as I drag the Viewerport node (set at 1920x1080) from one area of the photo to another.
Any suggestions on how to avoid this problem?
    Thanks for your time.
    (Shake 4.1)

I think the problem you are having is because having the Viewport AFTER your
Zoom means that the Viewport is trying to adapt its crop parameters to the zoomed size,
    which isn't working.
Why don't you just use a Viewport node followed by a Scale node?
If your stills are generally larger than the output size (good practice), you could feed the image into a Viewport to fix the size at 1920x1080, THEN use a scale for your zooms and pans.

  • Wrong aspect ratio in browsermode, after import...

    Hello there,
    here's the dilemma:
after I import raw images in aperture, the preview images (Browser mode) seem to be off (not proportioned correctly). Once I go to  Viewer mode, they "scale" to normal. It takes about half a second. It seems as if something is added to top and bottom of the image, ie. more "info" comes in... the actual aspect ratio (?) doesn't change, but the added info makes it "right". And it actually is added to both "long sides of the image", not top and bottom. By that I mean that if the it is a portrait orientation, it's left and right of the image that changes.
This is not a problem if there were just few images. I could go and move from one image to next in Viewer mode, and wait for that half a sec every in between, but when it's hundreds of images... well, you understand, not fun.
The camera is Sony a-55. And I have tried to import both directly from camera and by using the card reader in iMac. Same problem both.
    Thanks for all the help,
    Teemu Huttunen

Thanks Kirby, for joyning us! Good to know, that this is not a general problem with Sony cameras.
Teemu, I just checked, the raw support list says, that the a55 requires Aperture 3, so the raw support probably will be installed with the application.
Separate raw support download installers are here: Each installer adds a few cameras - it is a bit tedious to look at all of them to find the one, that installs the support for your camera.
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/#raw%20support
I'd try first to reinstall Aperture. Since you bought from the App Store, you can download Aperture again, if you quit Aperture and remove it from the Applications folder to the Trash (don't empty the Trash); log off and on again. Then sign into the App Store and download the installer again - it should be available in the "purchases" tab and see, if reinstalling helps.

  • Stills aspect ratio wrong

    Hi Guys
Have exported still from premiere pro 5.5.
Opened it in photoshop to deinterlace.
When imported back into premiere its went from 16:9 to 4:3
I assume its the pixel aspect ratio that photoshop has changed.
How do i get the stills to stay 16:9 when saving in photoshop?
    Thanks

    Hi Michael,
You didn't mention what the video format was, but if HDV at 1440x1080, in Photoshop you can just change to 1920x1080 and that will look correct then using square pixels in Premiere. Or use Modify in Premiere as suggested.

  • Slide Size = ? Aspect Ratio

Does anyone have any idea as to what aspect ratio a 1024 X 768 slide in Keynote is? I have a projector that the aspect ratio can be changed. My issue is that I don't know what size screen I need for the projector? They are available in 16:9, 1:1, and 4:1 aspect ratios. My presentation has been created in a 1024 X 768 slide size. I realize I can change that but would rather not as the 1024 X 768 slide size seems to be the best to have the type clean and visible.
Thanks in advance if you know.

You also need to know the lens zoom factor and the position of your projector. This will determine the size of the screen. The aspect ratio of the screen should be the same as the aspect ratio of the projector: Projecto 16:9 - Screen 16:9.
In terms of font size that is easy to read, that largely depends on the distance between the viewer and the screen. Rule of thumb is that the closest person shuold be 0.7 x the height of the screen (9' high screen = 6.3' to the front row of seating) and the furthest should be no more than 7 x the height of the screen (9' high screen = 63' to the last row of seating). This also depends on the content shown. So for slides with fine details (lot of small text, busy slides) maximum distance should be no more then 4 x height of the screen. 6 x for spreadhseet and up to 8 times for video and images.
    Hope this helps.

  • Resizing Photos Aspect Ratio Problem Using Contraints

I am a photographer trying build a portfolio website.  I want my pictures to be as large as possible for the screen on which they are viewed. I am using Flash Catalyst CS 5.5 with Mac OS X Lion.  The problem I am facing when using the new constraint feature is that the aspect ratio of the pictures changes based on the size of browser.  How can I have the photos maintain a consistent aspect ratio while still growing/shrinking with the size of the screen/browser?

In DV, both 4:3 and 16:9 material are the same number of pixels - 720x480. The difference is in the shape of the pixels. In FCP, unless the material is marked as anamorphic, it will assume the 4:3 aspect ratio.
If the original material was 16:9, when you import it into FCP, make sure
    1) the sequence is set for 16:9 anamorphic and
    2) you put a checkmark in the ANAMORPHIC column for the clip in the browser.

  • Aspect ratio on DivX movies

I'm having a few issues with the correct aspect ratio not being reproduced in Quicktime when watchting a DivX. When viewing in VLC Player everything is correct. For example I have a movie with a size of 852x368 but in Quicktime it's 720x368. The funny thing is when I view the information for the film in both VLC and QT it does actually say it's 720x368.
It's not a biggy because I'll happily watch it in VLC but I'm a little confused as to why it's happening.

But why does it show correctly in VLC but not QT?
Both sets of dimensions are "correct" (whether or not the aspect is correct is something else). QT keeps track of three sets of dimensions (4 with certain types of content) --
    1) the "Format" line -- e.g., an NTSC SD DV encoded file 720x480 (640x480)
where 720x480 is the encoded rectangular matrix dimensions and 640x480 is the square pixel dimensions.
    2) the "Normal Size" -- e.g., the same file as above would be 640x480 representing the dimensions as displayed/output for the current device which is a square pixel monitor.
    3) the "Current Size" -- e.g., the same file as above would read whatever size I am currently scaling the display window to be. Command-0 would be 320x240, Command-1 would be 640x480, Command-2 would be 1280x960, Command-F would be whatever size would fit in the monitor display, etc.
However, if I should re-compress the file in QuickTime to a different compression format that doesn't differentiate between rectangular and square pixels using a "scaled size" either in the original aspect ratio or one that changes the aspect ratio, then the new file would have all three values reset to the scaled dimensions in effect when the file was re-compressed. This means that you can both distort and correct distortion (e.g., fix a file that has "lost" its aspect flag) and that the term "correct" can be both arbitrary and relative when discussing clip dimensions.
    Confused enough yet?

  • Exporting 16:9 and retaining aspect ratio

    Hi all.
I have a 16:9 Pal project and want to export it for iPod (I have checked the iPod forum to no avail).
When I export the project the picture is squished and is 4:3. I have tried many things but cannot get the desired result - a wide screen iPod movie with black bars top and bottom. Although I know it can be done because I have downloaded iPod movies that appear to be 16:9.
I will give 10 points to the person who can help me.
    Cheers, Steve

Open your exported movie in Quicktime Pro.
Select Window->Show Movie Properties or <command>J.
In the list at top of the Properties window, select the Video Track.
    Click the Visual Settings tab.
Uncheck the "Preserve Aspect Ratio" checkbox.
In Scaled size you see the Horizontal x Vertical size in pixels. Multiply the Vertical number by 16 and divide by 9. Enter the result in the Horizontal box and hit return. Example: original scaled size = 720 x 486. New values are 864 x 486 (720 x 16/9 = 864).
You'll immediately see the aspect ratio of the movie change. Save the file.
    You're done.

  • Cannot set correct aspect ratio.

After Comcast completed maintenance somewhere on the network, the aspect ratio on my television changed, and now it is displayed in a zoomed in format that I cannot fix with any of the settings on my television.  With Set by Program or Just Scan, the graphics on CNN are too wide for the screen, for example--same on Bloomberg or anywhere that has graphics displayed.  On 4:3 format everything looks compressed and squeezed together.  16:9 is the same as Set by Program and Zoom is way too zoomed in.  I changed the 4:3 setting on the box, but it just made it default to non-4:3 format on those non-HD channels.  What has changed and how can I return to the correct aspect ratios for my television?

Never mind, I figured it out myself.  I continued trying different user setting combinations on the box and finally it worked.  I think the "Pass Through" setting is what did the trick.  Everything is now in the correct aspect ratio and the graphics are displayed properly.

  • Final Cut x support: aspect ratios

    Hi Everyone,
This is my first post to the forum. I have just crossed over to Final Cut X from the other final cut system, and finding my way!!
I friend of mine has nearly finnished editing a home-made doco on midwives from around the world and has some issues with aspect ratios, so I am posting on her behalf (as I couldn't arvise her). Can you help?
Most of her footage is 4:3 and she has started a 'new project' for each interviewee's story aprox 10min each. One story was shot in 16:9 and so has a 16:9 timeline. She is now trying to put these edits together on 1 timeline to export. She did a trial output to DVD with a mix of 4:3 & 16:9 footage and said some of the footage looked squashed. She is unsure how to reconcile the different footage formats and interperate how to fix the image looking squashed.
Can you advise? Also, she is based on the Sunshine Coast, Qld and would be keen to know if there are any final cut x tutors in the area, she could work with??
    Cheers

    Hi Russ,
Thanks for your quick response. I am thinking it would be best to add the 16:9 footage into the 4:3 sequence, as the footage is mostly 4:3. What do you think?
Try both appoaches with a short section of your movie. I typically like to  use a 16x9 frame unless there is very little 16x9 footage. Stack the clips above a solid generator and pick a compatible color to reduce the impact of the pollar bars. Of course if the client wants 4x3 I'm fine with that.
Can I just confirm with you that once a project is set in final cut x, (eg making a 4:3 sequence by adding the first footage as 4:3 footage), when I add some more footage eg.16:9 to this project- it will not change the project settings (even if I add the 16:9 footage at the start of the sequence)?
Adding different aspect ratio clips will not change the project properties once they are set. You can verify that in the Inspector by selecting the project in the browser and checking the top of the Info pane.
You can still use DVD Studio Pro with FCP X and Compressor. Absent DVDSP, iDVD would be my second choice. The quality of the DVD output from FCP is quite good but yeu have to be one track and the menus are spartan.
