Aspect ratio changes from quicktime

Hello,
I have edited together a video in Final Cut Pro (a simple slideshow comprising mostly of still photos) and made a quicktime that is 720 x 480. When I play it in the quicktime player it looks fine, but once I drag it into iDVD it looks elongated from left to right as if iDVD is stretching it to make it letterbox-shaped. I have made slideshows in iPhoto and dragged them into iDVD without encountering this problem. Any ideas?

Sounds like this could be the result of the square vs rectangular pixel story. iMovie and Quicktime can appear to stretch each other's video since iMovie's frame is 640x480 and Quicktime is your 720x480. Try sending it out of FCP in iMovie size.

Frame size, Compressor and Pixel aspect between my sequence and the clips match.
I can export an m2v just fine.
When I export a quicktime 7, H.264 300kbs file I get a stretched image (+33 aspect).
My question is: How do I export an H.264 without altering the aspect ratio?

Keep in mind that DVCPRO HD 720p is 960x720 (non-square pixels). If you are exporting to H.264 make sure you set the frame size for the export to 1280x720 to maintain a 16:9 aspect ratio with square pixels.

Aspect ratio changes?

I have edited a short film shot entirely in 16:9 on a 4:3 timeline (unaware I was doing so). So when I export my "widescreen" film, it is a 4:3 video with black bars on the top and bottom. So what I thought was if I create a new project, use "DV-NTSC Anamorphic" with the Easy Setup option, and create a new sequence, my entire film will no longer have black bars at the top and bottom. It will just be a 16:9 video. Well, I was wrong. In the new setup, every single clip is "squished", and it looks like if I wanted to fix it, I'd have to go through every single clip, re-import it, and have an adjusted aspect ratio... and I don't want to do that. Is there an easier way?

How is the Aspect Ratio changing?
Was the shooting Mode changed on the camera, between scenes, say from Standard to Widescreen? That would be a change in PAR (Pixel Aspect Ratio), but would show up the difference in the Project.
Also, are you in PAL-land, or NTSC-land?

Well my subject line explains it all really. I was wondering if there was a way to embed the aspect ratio in my quicktime movies instead of manually resizing them whenever i open them to a ratio that suits the content better.

Yes, however, to some extent, the method to be employed depends on your media player. QT 7 (and similar applications), for instance, will open using the "Current Size" display dimensions contained within the file. These dimensions are easily changed in the Properties window, using QT 7 Pro while the "Keep Aspect" switch is turned off and do not re-compress the data but may re-write the date to an MOV file container. On the other hand, applications that rely on the embedded PAR flag/value (like QT X, iMovie '08/'09', etc, must be re-compressed using the correct Anamorphic setting to re-embed the correct flag. When both settings are in agreement, an anamorphic file will open correctly in all players. However, where they differ, the files will open correctly in one type player and incorrectly in the other type of player.

Pasting problem between sequences. Aspect Ratio changes. Help

Hi. I'm fairly new to FCP so be patient with me. I shot HD using the Panasonic format 1080i. I transferred the footage from the SDHC cards using Apple Pro Res 422, 1920x1080. Everything was going fine in editing until I tried to copy and paste clips from one sequence in the timeline into another sequence. The aspect ratio changed in the clips I pasted. I tried to figure out what to do by looking at Sequence Settings and Clip Properties but to no avail.
Any suggestions? I am building separate sequences and then need to paste these together to make a QT movie or DVD for client so need help asap. I've previously worked with JVC HD cams using the 720p24 codec and never had this trouble when cutting and pasting.

This is not weird at all. One sequence is set to use square pixels (1920x1080) the other is using non-square pixels (1440x1080).
You need to fix the non-square pixel timeline.
The simplest to understand method to fix the non-square sequence issue is to create a new sequence with the proper settings then copy your material over from the non-conforming sequence.
To get a new sequence with the proper settings (if you have FCP7) all you need to do is "create new sequence" then drop one of the clips into the new empty timeline. If the settings do not match, when the program asks you if you want to change the sequence to match the clips, say yes.
Then select all the clips in the non-conformed timeline and copy and past them in the new correct timeline.

Aspect ratio changes in PPro CS4

When I export a project to a final video, the aspect ratio changes at different points in the video for no apparent reason. These videos are typically under 10 minutes in length. I use the same camera without changing any settings for every project and capture to PPro CS4 using the same settings for every project and using the same hardware. And yet, I end up with different aspect ratios across a single video. I have no idea why. Some of my output clips have never had any titles, special effects, imported clips, or anything else that I think might cause a change in aspect ratio.
Can someone shed some light on this for me?

If you go to about 4:34 in the clip you'll see it change over to a different aspect ratio.
This sequence was exported directly from PPro CS4 to FLV. The FLV file was uploaded to Youtube.
I'm editing this morning and just came across this same issue again.
I'm amazed that none of my clients have mentioned it yet. Of course, I'm not making Hollywood movies - these are just short videos people send out to college coaches.

Aspect ratio problem with Quicktime Conversion from FCE HD 3.5

I have a FCE 3.5 HDV project (16:9 aspect ratio) which I am trying to export using Quicktime Conversion for eventual web-streaming. I have tried various settings including "maintain aspect ratio" and the "letterbox" options. After every multi-hour attempt, the end result is just what I need, except the aspect ratio is always 4:3 and vertically squeezed.
What settings should I use for a small to medium sized version of my movie for streaming on a website, but in the correct aspect ratio? I'd prefer a 16:9 Quicktime frame, or at least a 4:3 Quicktime frame with black bars.

I too have been having some problems, same software. Export to iPod completely ignores the intended aspect ratio and is non-adjustable and squeezes the footage. It looks fine on the canvas but gets messed up on export. A 4:3 video that should be 640x480 ends up being 640x426, and a 16:9 video that should be 640x360 looks to be getting 640x426 as well.
Currently, my work-around is to export to DV file, then export to iPod. Being a double encoding, it is quite wasteful in terms of time and processing power. Is there something else I can do?

After cutting a 20 minute film on FCP exporting through Compressor 3.0 and finishing on DVDSP the final film looks great except it changes Aspect Ratio intermittantly and very randomly. Orignally I thought it changed from 4:3 to 16:9 but the Aspect changes are more subtle; like 4:3 to 5:4
The FCP Settings are
Frame Size - 720 x 576 Aspect Ratio CCIR 601 / DV PAL (5:4)
Pixel Aspect Ratio - PAL CCIR 601 (720 x 576)
Field Dominance - Lower (Even)
25 fps (I'm in Australia)

Aspect Ratio : Automatic
Selected: 4:3

Best Motion estimation
Any clues as to what I'm doing wrong with Compressor?

I solved my own question by exporting the project first as a QuickTime movie (not self-contained which is much slower & unnecessary for this task). I then put this through Compressor. Problem solved.
I found this answer by reading about similar questions on this forum & viewing a few tutorials on Compressor. Grateful thanks to this fantastic forum that seems tp answer any query I put to it.

Monitor: in CS2 how do I handle 4:3 to 16:9 aspect ratio change?

Hi, my first post here, so please be kind.
I have used Photoshop 9 successfully for several years using a conventional 4:3 aspect ratio CRT monitor. I have just upgraded to a flat screen monitor which has a native resolution of 1920 x 1080pixels with a 16:9 aspect ratio.
I resized the Photoshop window to fill the new screen but transferring photographs from Adobe Bridge they were stretched horizontally.
This is the first time I have ever changed the format of my monitor and feel that somewhere in Photoshop there must be a feature which accommodates such a change; though I have spent serious time looking.
I can get the image to display properly by changing the Pixel aspect ratio, but I am certain that would result in saving a distorted image.
Please what do I need to do?

You're in luck, there's a pretty easy solution for this:
You must change your Windows desktop resolution to exactly match the "native" resolution of the new monitor, which is 1920 x 1080 in this case.
Usually you will be offered that choice automatically, but in some cases you'll need to "install" from a CD or downloaded information about the monitor.
There may also be some on-monitor controls you'll need to review to ensure it's showing the full 1920 pixels in width.
What version of Windows are you running, and what model of monitor is it, specifically?

Cropping aspect ratio changes randomly

Each time I crop a new image, the aspect ratio seems to change randomly. Sometimes it will pop up as "Do Not Constrain." Sometimes it will appear as 4x5. Or 2x3. Etc. You get the idea. I have no idea why it's changing. It's very disruptive to the workflow. Any thoughts on what might be causing this?
I encounter the issue on both my MacBook Pro and my iMac.

Aspect Ratio Change in FCPX?

Hi.
I'd like to change the native aspect ratio in a 6sec clip from 16x9 to 2.35:1 in FCPX so the bars appear at the beginning of the clip and slowly close in, reaching 2.35:1 at the end of the clip.
Anyone know how this is done?

Create a 2.35 project using Custom settings.
Drop your 16:9 clip into the timeline.
Activate the Transform tool to get a bounding box.
Set a key frame.
Move the playhead to where you want the image to fill the frame.
Scale up the image to fill the frame.

Aspect ratio changes when editing

I've imported a number of clips DV-format widescreen 16:9.
They look fine and I can put them togehter as a project.
However when I delete parts of a clip when they reside in the event library (lower part of the iMovie 08 window). The remaining parts of the clip change into 4:3 aspect ratio. Untouched clips (from the same import) stay in 16:9
The clip-parts that are already in the projectlibrary stay ok in 16:9
I am doing something wrong or did I ran into a bug ?

My edited clips changed to .mov. The deleted ones were already altered, so I am not sure wether that's the result of the editing (which is logic) or from the deletion (sounds strange to me). The untouched clips still have .DV and again that makes sense.

Aspect ratios exporting to quicktime

Apologies if this is a hoary old newbie question and please do point me in the right direction if there are other threads on the same topic.
I’m editing a short originally shot on digibeta 16:9, then dumped down onto DV for digitising in. I’m having trouble keeping the aspect at 16:9 when I export to Quicktime.
The imported clips need ‘anamorphic’ checked to push them from 4:3 into 16:9 for editing, and almost every time I export the timeline to Quicktime, it comes out as 4:3. I’ve tried loads of different combinations of export settings but can never hit on the right one twice, let alone quickly. It’s not helped by FCP defaulting back to, well, its defaults each time.
So my question is: What boxes need to be ticked, settings set, etc. to export to a 16:9 .mov? I’m after streaming quality to do rough cuts people can view online.

You should use Compressor for this if you're not already using it.
Export the squeezed movie from FCP, and bring it into The Compressor Batch window. Your clip will appear in the window with a "Setting" column to the right of the clip name. Click the pop-up to apply a setting.
You will see all of your codecs with the QuickTime Web Download settings most likely toward the bottom.
Select the settings that you need.
This will show information for your setting in the Inspector window. Towards the top of this window, you will see a series of buttons under the name & description fields. If you hold your mouse over them, the name of that preference will pop up. Click on the Second to the last on the right which is "Geometry".
Here you can chose your frame size, pixel aspect, etc. At the bottom, you will see "Constrain to display aspect". If you click that menu, and select "16:9", and then click "Submit" in the batch window, your movie will be exported in the proper 16:9 aspect ratio.

Can aspect ratio changed?

I'm importing from a Canon Vixia HF20 that exports a 16:9 aspect ratio. I would like to export my movie from FCP X in 4:3. Can't find out how to do this. Can I? (The Canon can't be changed, I don't think...)

What is the fix for constarined crop aspect ratio changing when the image is rotated

I've migrated through LR 3, 4 and now 5 up to 5.4. I have been able to set a crop aspect ratio and synch pictures to that ratio as well as other editing selections. When I edit a particular picture and rotate it , the aspect ratio has stayed constant - to the value originally selected.I've never had a problem and it has consistantly worked properly even through last weeks editing activities. Now, when I set aspect ratio and then rotate, the aspect ratio really changes. If I go back and reset aspect ratio and select Done, it seems to be ok. This issue seems to perform wrong with portrait orientation but not in the landscape orientation. I have uninstalled LR, gone through registry cleanup, reinstalled LR, claened up the registry but nothing gets better. I do note that the settings aren't totally removed as the reinstalled software wants to pick up where I left it prior to uninstalling. As best as I can tell, all of my settings and preferences are the same as last week. It works on last weeks folders but not on new ones.
I have now seen many forum write-ups about this problem but have never found any solution. Help - I can't go through life cropping and straightening images sideways.

Here is a thread that I think addresses this problem. There were MULTIPLE bugs in the crop tool when Lr5.0 came out, probably due to adding the Upright Tool, but they are slowly getting worked out. Maybe this one will be fixed in Lr 5.5
