I have my project properties as:
DVCPRO HD - 720p24
I need 16:9...
When I render it squishes it to 4:3
Not sure what's going on.

Ahhh...yes. I guess I didn't do the math. I have a lot to learn about aspect ratios and all the settings...

16/9=1.777

Yes it squished it...but I didn't send it into FCP yet. I guess I was frustrated that I couldn't get it right, but I wasn't on the same page with the aspect ratios.
SO...let me see what I can do with it hearing your response..THANKS MUCH for the correction.
I can't wait to get my head wrapped around all this stuff. It's fun.

Aspect ratio suddenly changes in LR develop window without user interaction

I imported some Nikon NEF images with sidecar JPEGs using NikonView/NikonTransfer (rotate image turned on). Afterwards I imported the images into Lightroom (copy to new locacation). The LR option "treat JPEG files next to RAW files as seperate" is turned off.
I can see every image with correct orientation in the Lightroom Library.
But for 2 images when I switch to LR Develop the aspect ratio suddenly changes in film strip and large image display. The image is a 2:3 image but in Develop window it is shown as 3:2 image (not rotated but errorneously shrinked/stretched). That is really strange. I did nothing else than switching between Library and Develop! No rotation, no crop, nothing.
I can toggle between Library and Develop window: The image is shown 2:3 in Library and 3:2 in Develop.
This behaviour occurs for 2 images, not for all images.

For some reason it just started to work now. Have no idea what didn't work before.

I burned a slideshow with iDVD, professional quality selected, 16:9 aspect ratio selected. The quality of the finished product is much below that seen on my computer. I have watched slideshows made by other imac users which look great.

I have burned a slideshow from an iphoto album through iDVD, with "pro quality and 16:9 aspect ratio" selected on a double layer dvd. When viewed, the picture quality is much inferior to that of the photos on my computer. I have viewed slideshows made others with mac software and the pictures are much better. My tv is HD 1080 wide screen and disc player is new. What am I missing?

That's more an iDVD problem and you should ask your question there: iDVD.
The resident expert there, Bengt Wärleby, will be able to give you suggestions on how to proceed. He's very, very good.

I created custom component(polygon) in Flex Builder, compiled and added to my add-ons.
I got my custom component on stage in Xcelsius.
I would like to keep aspect ratio of my custom component during resizing?
Please check Spreadsheet Table component. Spreadsheet table and resize handlers keeps aspect ratio during resizing.
How can i accomplish this?
My thoughts:
I could do this by adding mouse down and mouse move event to stage area. When user starts resizing component(mouse down pressed, mouse move dispatched) I could just simply calculate and change component minWidth and minHeight.
Can I add events to stage area? If yes what kind?

I agree it would help productivity if there were a "sticky" setting on the crop selections.
In the meantime (assuming Adobe will eventually change this) you can use Synchronize or Copy Settings to apply a crop ratio to multiple images.
There are a couple minor glitches/bugs using this approach :
After synching, the crop size on the toolbar shows "Custom" rather than the actual ratio you set. I think it should display the chosen ratio, as it does when you choose a setting from the list.
If you copy/paste, the ratio improperly shows "Original", and the list also shows "Original" checked. But the crop frame tool on the image correctly shows the pasted crop ratio. I've found you have to go back to grid view and return to develop to set it properly. Confusing, at best.

Aspect ratio on widescreen tv - letterboxed

This has been brought up before, and there always seems to be the same answer…'its a setting on the tv/dvd to correct to play 16:9'…I have an SD widescreen anamorphic video that displays on tv as letterboxed and stretched, but yet the main menu of the dvd from DVDSP4 displays perfectly. There is no setting adjustment for display on the DVD. The display setting on the tv is set to 16:9. I'm baffled here. How can the main menu display right but the vid asset is stretched and letterboxed? I worked in FCP6 and exported to QT movie….from there I dumped it into DVDSP4 and created what I thought was a standard 16:9 dvd. Thoughts,…ideas…suggestions?

You also have to mind the display setting on the DVD player appliance.
At home I have an Insignia (Best Buy) DVD player and a Playstation 2. Both of these appliances were originally hooked up to 4:3 TVs, and now they're hooked up to 16:9 TVs. Just to make matters more fun, the Playstation 2 has a setting that applies to games and a setting that applies to DVDs. On the Insignia player, using the SETUP button on the DVD player's remote control, I set the display to 16:9. If I watch a 4:3 DVD on it (such as an old Bresson movie) I just change the TV's display setting (the TV's Dynex, also from Best Buy) and I haven't touched the DVD player's settings in years. Some Hollywood DVDs from 2009 and earlier have the previews at 4:3 and the main movie at 16:9, a mild nuisance.
In short, my advice to you is to make sure that both the TV and the DVD player are on the same page, so to speak, on aspect ratio. If that doesn't work, you might be dealing with a holdover glitch that also affects Windows Media Player; let us know the brand of your TV and DVD player.

Nested sequences change aspect ratio of clips underneath them

1. Nested sequence is off - everything under is is crisp and proper aspect ratio
2. Nested sequence is on - everything under it is blurry and wrong aspect ratio
3. Only nested sequence is on - so you can see it does NOT contain the layers underneath it by mistake
Why is this happening? It's really troubling... It generally happens when I go to render my sequence - it goes all haywire wrong aspect ratio when rendered with that transparent nested sequence above everything.

Crap... I noticed that this glitch now spread to even clips that have NOTHING above them. The scaling is wrong, and image quality gets a bit blurry after rendering. It always squishes my clips up after rendering, but they look absolutely perfect pre-render.
New example:
1. Clip 01 - Opacity slightly turned down to destroy the rendered preview - looks perfect:

Problem with Imovie and IDVD 16:9 aspect ratio

I've recently converted to a mac. The main reason for this was to take advantage of the superior video / dvd editing capabilities. However, I have hit upon a problem with the aspect ratio of the final video.
I have connected my video camera (a sony DCR-HC42E PAL which is in theory 16:9 aspect ratio) and imported the DV tape into iMovie. It recognised that this is a DV widescreen (i.e. 16:9)movie and imports the video and then "letterboxes" the video for some time. In the clips window it then shows each clip as it should in a widescreen mode.
I have created a final video then exported this to iDVD for burning to a disc. When it arrives in iDVD it is however elongated - i.e. 4:3 aspect ratio.
Is there any way of avoiding this / working around this problem?
I understand that my camera may not be videoing 16:9 but rather 4:3 then converting it itself - but in previous windows environment this was fine and the pre-loaded free windows movie maker software managed to cope with this - can a mac?

I was just about to throw the mac through the window and revert to windows - you have restored the faith!
I've done as you said (although the "auto pillerboxing tick is in "import" tab (not general) on my version 6.0.3 of imovie!) The movie has appeared in 16:9 format as suggested.
I would also comment that for general information, I pressed on with the higer frame setting and edited the full movie with the wrong setting on the macbook all the way through which looked weird - then burned a dvd via idvd and used the 16:9 setting as you suggested and the final video looked fine - therefore, the only place where the movie is incorrect was on the mac screen.
Overall I would agree that this is definatly a imovie "glitch". Thanks again.

Using "One Step DVD from Movie" on my IMac 10.8.6 using Verbatim DVD-R ("Life Series") 4.7 GB 16X 120, I get a wide angle version of my two minute story rather than the 3X4 standard aspect ratio that I normally get and want. Help!

While using "One Step DVD from Movie" using DVD-R Verbatim ("Life Series" 4.7 16 X 120 min) on my IMac 10.6.8 I get a wide angle aspect ratio on the DVD not the standard 3X4 aspect ratio. The Quicktime Movie is is standard 3X4 aspect ratio and the video video footage is standard 3X4 aspect ratio? Advice will be greatly appreciated.

Try this basic troubleshooting fix :
1 - delete the IDVD preference file, com.apple.iDVD.plist, that resides in your
User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete IDVD'S cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iDVD folder.

3 - reboot.
4 - launch IDVD and try again.
Personally I would not the the one step method but create the iDVD project from scratch so you can make sure the widescreen option is not selected in the preferences and you can follow this workflow:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

How do I get SD video (4:3 aspect ratio) to fill the entire screen?

Any 4:3 video I stream has black bars on either side of the picture. I have a Samsung HDTV, and I can stream content using its own pc to tv streaming software and 4:3 videos fill the entire screen. Or if I play a DVD with 4:3 aspect ratio that will also automatically fill the screen. With the Apple TV I cannot make it fill the entire screen. Is this something to do with the signal being transmitted over an HDMI cable?
Has anyone else had this problem, and if so how have you resolved it?

I know it is displaying 4:3 video correctly, however I'd prefer if there was some stretching (non-linear) so that it fills the entire screen. Having 2 big black bars on either side gets very annoying. There doesnt seem to be an option to fill the entire screen when streaming from the apple tv. There are options when streaming from Samsung's own software (I don't want to use samsungs pc share manager as the apple tv's user interface is much better).
Are my options restricted because the signal is transmitted through an hdmi cable? Seems to be what other websites might be suggesting.

Using Win 10 there is a need for an app to determine the full device display area and aspect ratio programitically; the dimensions are needed to create full-screen bitmap.

While Windows.Current.Bounds returns the application windows size, in order to create a full-screen bitmap my app would need to retrieve the full display area of the device. I cannot even get the aspect ratio.
Pre-Win10, using Windows.Current.Bounds I can create a bitmap of whatever size application window the user is seeing. When the user is showing my app at full screen, I can therefore get the full display area and aspect ratio of the device and create a full-screen
bitmap.
With Win10, the user would need to know to hide the taskbar and also display at full-screen before an app can retrieve the display area and aspect ratio using Windows.Current.Bounds.

Can anyone tell me if Quicktime Pro retains aspect ratio once a video is rotated?

I'm reluctant to purchase Quicktime Pro until I know the answer to this question and Apple Support doesn't seem to have anyway to ask, so I thought I'd try this group.
I took some videos with my iPhone (the long way), and need to be able to rotate them and convert them to avi files. I understand that Quicktime Pro can do the rotation and conversion, but I saw one review that said the aspect ratio is not retained, i.e. the video comes out flattend (wider).
Can anyone tell me if this is still true with QT Pro, or if there are other solutions for resolving this outside of QT Pro?? I have tried a number of other converters, and found one that rotates, but aspect ratio not retained.

This may or may not depend on your specific work flow. Many "settings' saved to the original file by QT 7 Pro are merely "playback instructions" which may or may not play correctly in other media players while these same settings do work properly when saved/converted to a new file container. In addition, not being a Windows user, I don't know if there are are any significant differences between the Mac and Windows versions of QT 7. In any case, I just took a short sample clip, stored it on my hard drive via Aperture 3, opened the file in QT 7 Pro, rotated the clip in QT 7 Pro, and used the "Save As..." command to store the modified file. This modified file now plays correctly in current versions of the QT 7, MPEG Streamclip, and VLC media players. Have uploaded a copy of this file so you can download it, test playback in various players you normally use, and/or test convert it to your specific AVI audio and video compression formats.

As indicated above, the file plays correctly for me in various media players and all media "Inspector" windows, including other third party media information utilities, confirm the correct dimensions and aspect ratio as displayed. As to AVI conversion, I test converted the uploaded file to AVI (DivX5/MP3) at original dimensions using VisualHub. (Also tried the VideoMonkey AVI encode but it limited the source 720p file to a 720x480 output and I did not know if you were agreeable to such a restriction.) Suggest you run similar tests with your preferred Windows converters to confirm/refute results on your system.

Still Photo Aspect Ratio Confusion

Apologize for asking a question on this topic as I have been through the forum and realize the topic of aspect ratio comes up often. I have not however seen this question answered. Quick background:
-Working with HD Video footage imported as SD as I am burning non-HD dvd's and I have heard the conversion in IDVD and Toast from HD is not great;
-Using photos imported from Aperture in FCE;
-Sequence is NTSC anamorphic as I want 16:9 but without HD;
My question is about the aspect ratio of still photos when I bring them into the timeline. I have experimented with saving photos in different aspect ratios: 853x480 and 720x480. When I import into FCE the 853 shows a square pixel and the 720 shows a NTSC pixel. From what I have read this is due to the way FCE interprets the aspect ratio and assigns an pixel aspect. When I view each in the viewer they both look correct when I click the corresponding pixel aspect from the top of the viewer. It is when I move these to the timeline that I get confused. The 853 gets an adjustment of 18.52 and the 720 gets an adjustment of 33.33. What do these adjustments actually represent? Is it a percentage, a number of pixels, something else? When I read about it in the Manual it seems to state that FCE adjusts for the difference between the still and sequence, but then why does it adjust the 720 since it has the same pixel aspect as the sequence? I then tried changing the Pixel aspect of the 853 in the browser to NTSC and moving it to the timeline. I get the same 33.33 adjustment. The 33.33 does not look correct in either of them, but when I change it to 18.52 it looks correct (with the pixel aspect at square, with it not checked it looks "skinny" or squished).
Only thing I can think is that it has something to do with the anamorphic adjustment and the squeezing that goes on with it as 18.52 as 853 (widescreen) is 18.47 percent wider the 720.
At this point I am really not sure how these will display when I make a dvd and display on a widescreen tv. I would prefer not to do this by guessing or looking at the picture, but instead by understanding what FCE is doing and making sure I have the settings and adjustments correct.

sorry to disagree, but for sure I was not clear, and the topic is quite complex. So I decided to provide an overview (as much as I can...) of the various combinations of clips inserted into various sequences with all settings - possibly on my web site (I'm afraid other posters are getting bored about all this math).
But since this is taking quite a bit of time, let me just tell you now where I disagree about your findings. When I'll have my overview completed I hope that will better explain what I mean.
_Your point 1_.
I'm pretty sure you (unwillingly) are importing your 16:9 square pixel NTSC clip into a +4:3 CCIR pixel NTSC sequence+ (not your original 16:9 anamorphic NTSC sequence). Please check your sequence settings by selecting the sequence in the browser in list view and reading the Frame Size, Pixel Aspect, and Anamorphic fields.
a. If your sequence is in fact +4:3 CCIR pixel NTSC sequence+, by applying the formulas you get:
- PARclip for +16:9 square pixel NTSC+ clip = 853/853 = 1 (as for any square pixel clip)
- but PARseq is not 1 (as you write) but 640/720 (square/actual pixels) = 0,8888
- Adjust = PARseq/PARclip = 0,8888/1 = 0,8888.
- Since Adjust is <1 Motion Aspect Ratio = - 100* (1/0,8888 -1) = -12,5 as you experienced on FCE. BTW this means that the imported clip has to be squeezed vertically by 12,5% (as opposite of horizontally).
b. If your sequence instead really is +16:9 anamorphic NTSC+ as you seem to imply, then 18,52 is correct as you confirm yourself with "Agree that in the four cases you list it agrees...": it is in fact the 2nd case in my 4 cases list.

Here I suppose the sequence is +16:9 CCIR pixel NTSC+ which has PARseq = 853/720 = 1,1852.
But I'm not clear what you mean by "720/640 NTSC clip". My guess is that you mean a +4:3 CCIR pixel NTSC+ clip,
then PARclip = 640/720 (square/actual pixels) = 0,8888
then Adjust = PARseq/PARclip = 1,1852/0,8888 = 1,3333 and Motion Aspect Ratio = 100*(1,3333 - 1) = 33,33 as you experienced

I think this formula in your earlier message is incorrect: Aspect Ratio (in Motion/Distort) = - 100 * (1/Adjust-1) if Adjust ≤ 1; seems like the formula: Aspect Ratio (in Motion/Distort) = 100 * (Adjust-1) if Adjust ≥ 1 works at all times including <1 as follows 100*(.875-1)=-12.5.</div>
This not true (well it is true only for Adjust = 1...). As an example if Adjust = 0,8888 then 100*(0,5-1) = -11,12 (wrong value for this pixel adjustment), while -100*(1/0,8888-1) = -12,51 which is the correct vertical squeeze !!
Why 2 different formulas are needed ? because when Adjust is >1 a +horizontal squeeze+ by Adjust is necessary to fix the pixel aspect ratio misalignement, when Adjust is <1 a +vertical squeeze+ is necessary by 1/Adjust... (figures will help as soon as they are ready for... publishing).
I'm sorry these posts are so long, I try to make them as clear as possible, but the topic is a bit messy and, even if only fractions are involved in this math, their actual meaning is not always intuitive...I'd really appreciate any comment also by more experienced users of FCE/FCP...

A slightly different problem with aspect ratio and DVD Maker

I am converting VHS movies to DVD. All are 4:3. Using Microsoft Movie Maker, I create the desired final result, a WMV file that plays perfectly--aspect ratio, sound, whatever.
The problem comes when I use DVD Maker to create the DVD. The picture gets squeezed pretty much to a square (from the 4:3 original). DVD Maker correctly shows 4:3 as the desired ratio.
Ironically (considering the solution offered in several similar posts), when I convert that WMV file to AVI, and _then_ use DVD Maker, all appears fine. My only complaint at this point is that the result is "window-boxed." That is, there is large black space
on all four sides.
I see nothing in DVD Maker to adjust (in hopes that the original WMV might work for me), but just thought I'd ask.

Aspect Ratio wrong in sequence imported from FCP

I'm a reasonably experienced user of Final Cut who intends now to migrate to Premiere (leaving the sinking ship?) So, at present, I'm trying to import current projects from FCP into Premiere using XML.
The result for a large scale and pretty advanced project was disasterous losses, so I've decided to start with a much smaller project, which contains a single sequence in the same format as the media, 20 or so HDV 1080p25 clips, and a handful of wav sound files. The result is better, but there are two problems I've encountered:
1. When I open the sequence in the timeline the aspect ratio, which should be 16:9 is squashed in to something more like 4:3. Opening a clip from the bin in the source monitor does not have this effect, but I can't work out how to rectify the change of aspect ratio when the sequence is playing in the program monitor. - Any tips?
2. The audio file icons in the project imported into Premiere are unlinked. When I try reconnecting them, Premiere says it can't because of a 'header error'. - Any clues to what this means and why it should be?

Yes, I've tried importing one of these wav files into a new project, but it Premiere won't allow me to. It comes up with a message saying:
"The file cannot be opened because of a header error".
Any ideas?
PS. As this was a side issue to my main query, and the title of this thread doesn't refer to it and hence might make it hard for others to find, I've added a new query to cover this under the title: "Header Error when importing Wav files"

One way to to put the videos into an iDVD slideshow
and set iDVD's Slideshow preferences to always scale slides to TV Safe Area.
However, some users have reported that the audio quality using this method is lessened. I've not noticed it but then I don't have a good ear when it comes to that sort of thing. If you add more than one video in the same slideshow do not select any transition.
