Aspect Ratio Guides

Is there a way I can get aspect ratio guides so i can correctly frame my sequences? I'm looking for 2.35:1 and 1.85:1 etc.

You can get generators for the letterbox bars themselves, but no guides that I no of. I suppose you could just lower the generator's opacity...

  • Aspect ratio bug with analog TVs?

I just bought an AppleTV, and connected it via component cables to a 4:3 TV (it's an older TV, has component inputs but only supports 480i, and it's 4:3, not widescreen).
The problem is that all 4:3 content that I have is squished horizontally on the AppleTV. And the same content plays fine on a variety of computers in iTunes, QuickTime, etc. Say I take a video file that's 640x480 (that's a 4:3 aspect ratio), and when played on a computer it looks correct. If I play it on the AppleTV, everything looks too narrow, and there are black bars on the left and right.
If I reencode the same video file to 720x480, then it looks correct on the AppleTV (fills the screen with no black bars, and people don't look squished). However, then it looks funny when played on any a computer, or anything else that isn't the AppleTV (now, people are fat, and there are black bars top and bottom).
My take is this is an AppleTV bug -- analog TVs (in the US anyway) have a resolution approximating 720x480, but an aspect ratio of 4:3, so the pixels aren't square. The AppleTV should be compensating for this (if it's gonna be the bridge between the digital world of H.264 files that come from computers with square pixels, and the analog world of NTSC TVs with non-square pixels, it should hide the differences) and isn't. In short, the AppleTV should be taking 640x480 content (or anything that's 4:3 with square pixels) and making it fill the TV screen, no matter that the TV screen has 720x480 slightly narrower pixels.
However, if I'm right, why aren't more people complaining about this; I can't be the first to notice? Am I the only one trying to connect the AppleTV to a 4:3 TV set?
Or, am I off base, and there's a simple explanation, or some setting I missed?
What I'm after is a way to take the media I've already encoded that plays fine on a Mac and make it play correctly on the AppleTV, and also a way to encode new media so that it plays fine both on the Mac and on the AppleTV, but I haven't been able to find it yet.

Also, I've read what I can find on the web, especially this excellent article: http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/the-complete-guide-to-ipod-vi deo-formats-and-display-resolutions/. They have a really good explanation of anamorphic encoding, and how it's represented in QuickTime.
I'm using Handbrake (0.9.1) to encode, by the way, and its PAR setting for anamorphic encoding works fine with QuickTime; whether I encode to true 640x480 or PAR 640x480 (which results in a file that actually stores 716x480 but displays at 636x480 in my case) it ends up correct on a Mac and incorrect on the AppleTV+analog display.
Is there perhaps some extra display information that can be added to an .mp4 file, which will be honored by the AppleTV but ignored by everything else (including QuickTime on a computer), which can change the display size? I'd love to encode everything with anamorphic encoding so that the actual file stores 720x480 pixels, but a computer will render this at 640x480, and the AppleTV render it at 720x480 (all those numbers are for 4:3 content, again).

  • Monitor Settings - Aspect Ratio

I just bought one of your computer monitors from Best Buys in Mooresville, North Carolina [#1133] with a four year extended warrantee. I bought the Lenovo - L2262 unit with the 21.5 inch screen. Monitor LI P/N: 0A46982. I paid $174.43.
    Here's my problem:
I work with AutoCAD and I need my screen aspect ratio to be 1 to 1. It is shipped with an elongated aspect ratio and I don't like that. When I draw a square with my AutoCAD, I want it to be a square and not a rectangle. There must be somewhere in the settings of the program where I can reset the aspect ratio to 1 on 1 for my purposes.
    Please respond.

    Maso,
How is the display in other applications including Windows?  Does everything appear in correct proportion?
Have you been using the system with another display previous to your move to the L2262, and noted the squares were ... square as expected prior to switching displays?   What system are you using to drive the display?
What display resolution are you running?  Perhaps a non-native resolution might be selected?
I don't know autocad, and I'm sure you know your way around it pretty well.    That said, does autocad have a setting to lock aspect ratios?  I found some citations in their online user guide for the 2010 version here, but these seem to relate to rendering rather than creating basic shapes.
Anything else you can tell us about the configuration and your use prior to adding this display may help draw additional suggestions from the community.
    Best regards

  • Aspect Ratio - rotate 90 degrees

I've got an image with a 3X2 aspect ratio. I'd like to make it a 2X3 aspect ratio. But I can't seem to rotate the image enough to do that, and if I type in 2X3 Lightroom cleverly "fixes" it to 3X2.
How do I invert the crop aspect ratio?
    Thanks,
    Andrew

Page 81ff of the LR Users Guide describes cropping.
But here's something that may help with all of this. For a landscape crop ratio--if you grab a corner crop handle and move the mouse vertically, the landscape aspect ratio is maintained as you move the mouse. But if you move the mouse horizontally, the orientation "flips" after moving a short distance. The converse is true for a portrait oriented crop ratio. And if you grab a "mid-point" crop handle, then the aspect ratio never flips orientation as you resize.
As indicated in the manual, if you want to lock the current aspect orientation while resizing, hold down the shift key before and while moving the mouse.
With a little practice it becomes easy, and you can even figure out where to grab the crop frame to minimize the relocation of the image afterwords.

  • Aspect ratio problem - I think

I've recently started using Compressor and have found it to be a very great app.
However, I'm experiencing a problem that I can't seem to resolve.
I shoot and edit HDV footage in FCP. After I generate a Quicktime movie (self-contained) - I'll fire up Compressor and add the .mov file. I wish to make a DVD so I select a setting (usually DVD Best Quality 90 mins.) and then click submit. Compressor generates two files that I drop into Toast and burn a DVD. The footage is in 16:9.
I take the DVD out after burning in Toast and pop the DVD into a player.
The problem is that the footage's aspect ratio is spilling over when viewed on a 4:3 aspect TV. This isn't good since my lower thirds get cut off. on the left by just a bit.
So what can a do to remedy this? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

So there's no way to compensate or correct in compressor other than to redo the titles in FCP?
    Hi,
Your current self-contained movie has now become an independent movie from the original timeline and all tracks from your timeline are merged together into 1 QT movie.
You can add text in Compressor as I said earlier but in this case you need to go back to FCP and simply do a few adjustments to your titles (being guided by the show title safe function), that shouldn't take long.
You don't have to necessarily export as self-contained movie. By unchecking the self-contained box you create a reference movie (meaning that you create a file reference to your current edit without exporting/copying the correspondent media used) which you can import into Compressor.
You can also send the timeline straight to Compressor (Export>Using Compressor).

  • How to keep aspect ratio for different sized resolutions?

If I have a 1280 x 800 resolution widescreen moniter, and I have this fullscreen game that likes to run in 800 x 600 but I don't like the way that the game stretches across the whole widescreen moniter. The only way for me to keep everything in a good aspect ratio is to put my resolution at 1280 x 800 but the game doesn't like that.
Would there be a way to set it so that the 800 x 600 resolution is set to have the correct aspect ratio rather than being stretched across the widescreen?  ie, so it looks like a square with black spots on both sides.
I heard that a modeline generator would be the thing I want, but I'm not sure how I should go about this stuff. If you have any reading on it, please give it to me.

Thank you very much. I never thought to look in the BIOS.
There wasn't an option to keep aspect ratio and stretch but I was able to center it rather than stretching.
Now my framebuffer boot up got centered, I need to find out how to make the framebuffer bootup be 1280x800 rather than 1024x768. This should be simple, but the guide in the sample menu.lst only gives square-y resolutions.

  • Why do premium movie channels alter the widescreen aspect ratio?

Why do channels like HBO HD and Cinemax HD change the aspect ratio of movies?  I have seen movies that I own on dvd or blu-ray that are 2:35:1 or 2:40:1 aspect ratio (meaning very wide and you see some thin black bars at the top and bottom of your screen) but when they are broadcast on these movie channels it looks like the films are  partially panned & scanned down to a 1:85:1 ratio (not as wide and the bars are gone).
This is really stupid, and the movies are not being shown in their full widescreen orginal presentation.  What do they have to gain by cutting off parts of the picture?  I have noticed some channels like showtime don't do this, but most do.  Obviously this isn't verizons doing its the channel providers, but it's annoying.
And what's with all the logos all over the premium channels nowadays?  These are paid channels the screen should be clear of any and all logos and any add overlays.  If I want to know the channel and rating I'm watching I'll just press the guide button, it's overkill.

    film11 wrote:
They do this for the OnDemand movies as well.  I agree...it is VERY annoying.   There is NO reason for it.  Sure, there are some people out there who want their screen filled, but they can always use the ZOOM button to do that.  It's a terrible practice and I never watch movies on channels that crop them (and am cancelling the channels that do it when my contract bundle expires).  The only channels that show movies in the correct ratios are SHOWTIME, THE MOVIE CHANNEL, and HDNet MOVIES. (EPIX shows old movies in OAR but crop newer films.)
The others, Notably HBO that started this practice, do occassionally show OAR.  But usually only when the director specifically had in his agreement that his picture would only be so displayed when marked to TV channels.

  • Difference Matte Key aspect ratio PP2.0

I'd appreciate some help with the Difference Matte Key using Premiere Pro 2.0. I followed the instructions in the help guide to set up the Difference Matte, and it worked perfectly, except... the Matte doesn't match the 16:9 aspect ratio I'm using, it only applies to the central area of the screen leaving a band either side where the original background of the video remains unaffected.
How can I get the Matte to fit across the whole screen, please?

    OK
I've swapped the AppleTV over on the Panasonic - AppleTV 1 (1.1 - 1080i) gets the aspect ratio wrong and zooms the movie vertically, whereas AppleTV 2.0 (1080p) gets it right.
I'm sure I used to have some wider than 16:9 content before and never noticed this problem.
    Perhaps a more important finding:
1.1 definitely won't play back the 5.1 soundtrack that AppleTv 2.0 will.
However, as 5.1 movies ALSO have an AAC soundtrack, AppleTV 1.1 will still output this audio track correctly from files that have both - so no real problem running both versions on your network.

  • New aspect ratio crop.

I have a PC using Windows 7.  Today I have upgraded Lightroom 5 from Lightroom 4.  When using the new Aspect Ratio crop the guides appear as expected.  When I go to the top centre area of the crop, instead of getting the black lines with the arrows (as you do with the corners) all I get are two white arrows. This means I can only drag the entire crop box to a smaller size.  The line will not move down to the aspect guide as you expect.  Can someone inform me as to what the issue is?

If i understand your problem correctly, you have to unlock the padlock in the crop tool to get this behavior.

  • Convert aspect ratio (from 1440p to 1080p)

    Hi All,
I'm using the trial of Premiere CC (considering making the jump from FCPX). The getting started guides on adobe's site are great but i'm having problems trying to find an answer for this question:
I shot some footage in 1440p (by mistake), i've edited it into a sequence that I want, colour graded it and put music to it. How do I crop it so that it becomes 1080p. I've used the crop effect but when I go to export it to h.264 it still exports it as 1440p but with black bars.
Can anyone help? I would be eternally grateful
    Chris

1440 has a aspect ratio of 1.33. This should also be in your sequence settings.
1440 can be easily exported to 1080 with aspect ratio of 1.0.
You can also drop 1440 footage directly in a 1080 sequence, it will automatically fit the screen.

  • PAL aspect ratio: 720 x 576 is not 4:3

I've just "Shared" my first movie using Full Quality. I thought it looked a bit odd. Comparing the original with the compressed version in Quicktime, the QT version is obviously narrower.
Checking the QT details gives 720 x 576. The imported video looks like 4:3 to me. That should come out as 720 x 540.
    Somewhere on another posting I think I saw the NTSC version as 640 x 480. That's 4:3.
No-one else seems to have brought this up (I have looked, but I may have missed it), so I'm beginning to think it's me and I'm losing the plot!
If I'm right, how do I get round it? Would QT Pro allow the movie to be resampled to 4:3?

Read all about this nasty aspect ratio stuff from "A Quick Guide to Digital Video Resolution and Aspect Ratio Conversions":
    http://www.iki.fi/znark/video/conversion/
"Not a single one of the commonly used digital video resolutions exactly represents the actual 4:3 or 16:9 image frame.
Shocking, isn't it? 768×576, 720×576, 704×576, 720×480, 704×480, 640×480... none of them is exactly 4:3 or 16:9; not even the ones you may conventionally think as "square-pixel" resolutions."
"720x540 is an oddball compromise format. Better to avoid unless you really know what you are doing. [...] the original interlaced field structure (if any) will go haywire as you mess around scaling in the vertical direction."
    http://www.uwasa.fi/~f76998/video/conversion/#4.7
    So:
To convert rectangular pixel PAL 720x576 DV to square pixel image you should scale to 788x576, then optionally crop it with 10 pixels from both sides so that the final image is 768x576.
To convert rectangular pixel NTSC 720x480 DV to square pixel image you should scale to 656x480, then optionally crop it with 8 pixels from both sides so that the final image is 640x480.
    And to the other direction:
To convert a 4:3 (2048x1536, 768x576 etc) square pixel still image to PAL 720x576 rectangular pixel video, you should resample to 702x576, then pad with 9 black pixels to the sides so that the final image is 720x576.
To convert a 4:3 (2048x1536, 640x480 etc) square pixel still image to NTSC 720x480 rectangular pixel video, you should resample to 702x480, then pad with 9 black pixels to the sides so that the final image is 720x480.

  • Exporting movie with 2.35.1 aspect ratio

I used filmic pro on my 4S to capture 24fps video along with a 2.35.1 overlay guide so my video composing will work once everything is edited. I have edited the video in iMovie with 1920x1080 24fps project settings and now I want to export it. Some videos I have seen recommend putting a picture of 2 black bars over the video but I think this is a waste of time and space since I will have to render the 2 black bars.
What would be the correct way of exporting my video with a 2.35.1 aspect ratio in iMovie? It would also be good if there are guides for Final Cut, and Adobe Premiere since I intend to try these out too.

iMovie will render your movie in 16:9 (1920x1080) or 4:3 (standard def), since those are the sizes of television screens.
To show a movie in 2.35:1, you will need to use the set the aspect ratio of the project to 16:9, and then, use the Rotate, Crop, Ken Burns tool on the middle Toolbar to set each clip to FIT. You can then Share the movie, and it will create the black bars for you.
If you want to show your movie on a device (like a computer screen or a web page) that is not constrained by the 16:9 or 4:3 limitation, you may be able to process your movie in QuickTime Pro to trim to exact dimensions, but you should check in the QuickTime Pro discussions to make sure, because I have not tried this myself.

  • Re aspect ratio mis-match problem

I'm using motion with DVCPROHD 1080p24. So aspect ratio should be 1280 x 1080 (1.5)
As I'm doing an animation, media is coming in from stills camera... into photoshop and out into corel Painter and back again. Eventually I am getting square/rectangular problems. (Painter has no aspect settings and does not recognise this and puts everything back to square) So I usually reset the aspect in inspector to (1.5)
This last time, when clicking on the media and inspecting one sequence has come in at (1.5) but only looks in proportion when set to square ratio. If I set it to square, will there be any problems? So some media is square some (1.5) This sequence will go out again as an animation codec or frame sequence. What happens? could does this eventually end up a blur when it goes back to motion and then to fcp? Does this matter?

Dig deeper into to the settings of your TV. Under picture settings you should you should find a setting such as "HD picture size". Both of my Panasonics have it. Adjusting that setting should help you.
