Aspect Ratio settings were wrong... Help

Okay so I am doing a project for a class using FCP. I set my project settings to the requirements we were given. However somehow down the line the settings got changed and I have my edit all done. However when I go to change it back to the proper settings everything becomes stretched and zoomed in. Is there anyways to fix this so I do not have to redo my whole project?
These are the required Project Settings:
NTSC DV Anamorphic 16:9
However these are the settings that it was edited in:
HD (1440x1080) (16:9)
Please tell me there is a way to fix this without having to redo my project.

dont worry.....
fisrt of all duplicate your sequence. use the copy to test out what Im telling you so you dont damage your original.
Right click your sequence in the browser and go to setting...
Inside change your HD settings to NTSC with the right frame size, frame rate and pixel aspect (NTSC)
This should change your sequence into an NTSC one. and everything will look stretched.
Select all your material and hit ALT/APPLE/V and remove attributes box will appear
Tick the boxes for distort and basic motion.
This will remove all the resizing that has been placed on you clips and they should look better.
If they are still a bit out Select the first clip in your sequence and resize this using the motion tab - then copy APPLE/C the Motion and Distort attributes of that 1 clips and ALT/V paste them onto all the other clips in your timeline.
As long as they were all captured correctly everything should snap into place.

  • Aspect Ratio Settings - Quick Adjustments?

    G'day,
    Learner here, film student...
So, I stuffed up the pixel aspect ratio settings of my Sequence... but only realised after cutting etc, so now I have heaps of little bits of clips to have to go into Motion tab and correct...
    Is there an easier way?
    Cheers

So... my question is... If I now fix the Sequence settings to 1920x1080, Square PAR, and XD Cam... will Final Cut look to the original (clean) files, or will it look at the render files it's already (degraded) from the original ones?
There are sequence presets for XDCAM. Open the Sequence settings (command + 0), and try loading the one that matches the video format of your clips.
Before creating a new project in Final Cut Pro, you should always check your Audio/Video settings. Easiest way is to choose an Easy Setup, in the Final Cut Pro menu.
I am guessing you are still using Final Cut Pro 5.x.x. Final Cut Pro 6 automatically sets the sequence settings for you the first time you add a clip to a sequence.
In FCP 5.x.x you can use the following tip
    Editing non-standard FCP codecs
    Good luck!
Next time you post a question, you should include as much info about the problem as possible. At least tell us what video format and versions of software you are working with. That will make it so much easier to help!

  • Where are crop aspect ratio settings stored?

I have created a few custom aspect ratio settings in the develop module crop tool that I would like to get rid of. These pop up in the bottom section of the "Aspect" popup window right under "Custom". I would like to know of a way to clean this up a bit.

I don't think it's possible - at least not without major surgery.
This has been commented on in previous versions.
I can't think of any other S/W where the user can enter info, and then no way of clearing it.

  • Aspect Ratio settings -4:3 video doesn't look right on a 16:9 set

Hello- I'm importing old vhs tape via a Canopus 300 into Final Cut Studio then exporting through Quick Time Movie and burning a DVD in iDVD. The problem ocours when I view the DVD on my 16:9 set- video looks to be the wrong size....for example graphics that were within the frame boundaries on the original tape display off the corners of the screen when viewed on the DVD.
    Here are my settings:
    Final Cut:
Sequence preset - DV NTSC 48 khz
Capture Preset - DV NTSC 48 khz
Device Control - non controllable device
video Playback - Apple firewire ntsc 720x480
    audio playback - default
In iDVD I have the project aspect ratio set to 4 : 3
Am I missing something somewhere to preserve the original 4:3 aspect to display properly on 16:9 sets?

Thanks Shane. Tried that on my set, was able to set to normal when viewing off-air picture, but when switching inputs to te dvd player the side bars are gone. Fiddled with the dvd player settings, set it for 4:3 output and I get a letterbox frame but at least the graphics are on screen. Looks like the stretch setting you spoke of.
Regarding Final Cut settings, in capture preset the setting DV NTSC 48 has a default of 3:2 aspect ratio. I see I can edit and change it to NTSC 4:3. Do you think it should be 4:3?

  • HandBrake Aspect Ratio Settings Conversions

HandBrake is an super program for converting your DVDs into a format compatible with your 5G iPod. I spent some time figuring out how to convert widescreen movies to either the 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio using the crop settings in this program, and I thought I'd share them here. I'll assume a basic knowledge of HandBrake and skip all the settings except for cropping (they are covered very well in several other threads). I'll also assume that you're using the H.264 option, although most of this is relevant if you're using MPEG4 as well. To begin, click on "Picture Settings", this is where you adjust the height, width and crop settings.
For reference, here are the common aspect ratios:
    4:3 (1.33 SDTV)
    16:9 (1.78 HDTV)
    13:7 (1.85 Flat)
    47:20 (2.35 Scope)
If you let HandBrake choose the crop settings automatically, all you need to do is adjust the width (in the "Size" box) to 320 and leave everything else alone. You'll end up with a file that will play on your iPod with letterboxing (unless of course, the movie is already in 4:3). For the purists, this is the way to go. I like this setting for some movies, there are others that I don't mind converting to 4:3 or 16:9 so I can see more on my iPod screen. I find that movies which are already in 16:9 work well when converted to 4:3 and that the common widescreen formats (1.85 and 2.35) work in 16:9 format. As I'll mention below, I don't recommend converting widescreen movies to 4:3 as this cuts too much of the picture off.
Here are a few tips to keep in mind: 1) You won't ever need to adjust the height in either the "Size" or "Crop" boxes. 2) Start with the "Crop" settings, you'll adjust the "Size" last. 3) Use whatever "Automatic" crop settings for height that HandBrake selects and go from there.
The basic idea is to divide the pixels for width by the pixels for height and to get the result as close to either 1.33 or 1.78 (4:3 & 16:9) as possible. The movie I'll use as an example has a 2.35:1 aspect ratio, and the initial pixels in the "Size" box are 720X304. Divided, this equals 2.368. As you can see, it's not exactly 2.35. Don't worry about getting perfectly to 1.33 or 1.78. The distortion when you're close is imperceptible. I'll go through the steps now to convert this movie to 16:9 or 4:3.
For 16:9 - In the "Crop" box, set the width to 96 on either side. This causes the width in the "Size" box to go from 720 to 544. Dividing 544 by 304 (which didn't change) we get 1.789. If I change the width to 98 I come up with 1.736. Since 96 on both sides gets us closest to our target, that's the setting we'll use. Now change the width setting in the "Size" box to 320. This causes the height to scale down to 176 (keep the aspect ratio box checked). Now you can go back and rip the movie and you'll have it in roughly 16:9 format.
For 4:3 - In the "Crop" box, set the width to 156 on either side. This causes the width in the "Size" box to go from 720 to 416. Dividing 416 by 304 we get 1.368. In this case, we're doing a pretty radical adjustment of the aspect ratio. I don't recommend doing this as you will probably cut too much off the sides. It is good to try this to help understand the process. It is interesting to note that the movie width stays at 416 with crop settings from 152 to 158. Since the ratio at 416 is 1.368 (a little too wide), I chose 156 as the best setting. Again, change the width setting in the "Size" box to 320. This causes the height to scale down to 240 (keep the aspect ratio box checked). Now you can go back and rip the movie and you'll have it in roughly 4:3 format.
Below are initial settings for basic conversions. I suspect that each movie will be slightly different, so you may need to go through and "fine tune" the settings. Just keep in mind that you want to come as close to the ratios I list above and you should be happy with your rips. Hope this post is helpful...
From 2.35:1 to 16:9 - Width crop setting is 96
From 2.35:1 to 4:3 - Width crop setting is 156
From 1.85 to 16:9 - Width crop setting is 18
From 1.85 to 4:3 - Width crop setting is 98
From 16:9 to 4:3 - Width crop setting is 86

  • Lync 2013 client Microphone auto Gain and video aspect ratio settings

I can't disable the auto microphone gain which seems to be regulated by the Lync client.
When having a meeting with video for instance, the microphone of the listening partner (side b) will keep on increasing the microphone gain, until it is on its maximum, because the listening partner is listening and does not make any noise.
When someone on the other side of the room on side b is having a conversation with someone else, the mic gain keeps increasing till side a can follow that conversation, the mic is very sensitive.
This can not be, there is no way to disable the gain in the Lync client, I've tried to disable the right of a program to take exclusive right of the device, without succes.
Why did Microsoft didn't think about this, we need an advanced settings menu where things can be shaped.
Not only the microphone gain is a problem, also the way the video is presented, there is no way to set an aspect ratio, if i'm having a 16:9 screen the video is chopped at the bottem and top of the video of the sending partner, so i'm unable to see the whole
room of the sending side, which is there cause the cam can provide me a nice overview of the side when viewing the local cam at that side, but not with Lync.
We are in an evaluation of Lync, but really getting annoyed by these short comings, in my opinion some basic settings which should be in lync from start. We can not sell these short comings to our employees.
Maybe i'm looking in the wrong direction, if so, please tell me.

  • ESPN Aspect Ratio has gone wrong

I cant believe no-one else has noticed this?
For the last week? the ESPN channel has been a forced 4:3 ratio. This means you get black bars on the sides - the picture is still widescreen but has been squashed.
This makes it unwatchable really and it wasnt great before.
Surely I cant be the only one who has seen this? Its very annoying. I recorded the Liverpool and AC Milan games and ended up giving up watching them.
    Very annoyed about this.

Just short fat ones! It is strange though that the Stainless Steel Rat and Guy are suffering this problem yet others are not. A transmitter issue perhaps? Or is the TV transmission aspect ratio set by the channel provider at source, unilaterally across the whole country?

  • FCE HD Settings Were Wrong-Can I Save Anamorphic Movie?

I just edited my first movie on FCE HD 3.5. On my initial setup, I neglected to use DV-NTSC Anamorphic (just DV-NTSC). When I burned my DVD I got a 'windowboxed' 16:9 aspect ratio (black bars all around). I just reset the setup. Am I stuck with the non-anamorphic movie or can I export it again, this time as anamorphic? I did film in anamorphic and the viewer seems to show a 16:9 picture, and I would hate to recapture and edit again. Any good news?
    Thanks,
    Ted

Certainly you can drop in a QT movie but dropping in the original sequence will work as well, just drag it in from the Browser (grab the original Sequence icon created when you first started the project)
Please note: Something has to be in the new sequence first; in other words, overlay a Slug or some Bars at the head of the new sequence's Timeline then drop the new sequence in after that. When you export, set your In point after the Slug/Bars and at the head of your original sequence

  • 4:3 aspect ratio settings

I am shooting on Panasonic HD camcorder. And I want the final video to be in PAL SD (4:3). Is it correct if I set the preset to DV-PAL Standard 48 hrz? I am confused.

If you were to create a sequence with the DV-PAL settings, and drop your HD footage on it, and scale it down so that the top and bottom were perfectly scaled, then the left and right side of the image would not be visible. Effectively you have taken the center of your 16:9 image and cut it out of the larger frame. Extracted it.
I would recommend, as shooternz said, editing in the native 16:9 sequence, created from your media.
Then turn on the safety zones to see the 4:3 image. Edit with that in mind, and when you export you can crop the image to 4:3.
That way, if you ever go back and re-edit to 16:9 it won't be much of a hassle.
That said, you have to shoot everything in the middle. Which, of course, is not what you would do if you were planning on exporting to 16:9. Otherwise, you are going to have to move the video frame around to put the best part of the 16:9 frame into the middle 4:3. It is not hard to do though.

  • Computer / All Program Settings were reset, help ?

I turned my macbook off at school, and when I turned it back on at home 20 minutes later I noticed my desktop background changed to the default, among closer inspection everything went back to default... dashboard, dock all my photoshop printing settings, I had to re sign the agreement in itunes and move all my songs back into it. everything...but all my files were still on the computer, but in weird places it seemed, the Music and Photos were empty but there were new folders in some weird place on my harddrive that had all the stuff that was originally in them.. I'm confused and want to know if this has happened to anyone else, and if so, if it happened more than once.

  • FLASH ASPECT RATIO!?? Help

I have set up a flash movie to be played on a 37" lcd. It said the resolution is 1366x768 WXGA, HDTV compatible. So that is the resolution I have set it to play in. It will be playing as .swf
My question is: will it fill the entire screen, look correct?   I don't have a 37" to test it in... only a 42".
    please help.

My guess is Flash Player will give viewers the option of full screen.  Good question.

  • Header Image File - Wrong Aspect Ratio in PDF

I imported a picture into a form and it looks great in the FormsCentral editor.  But when I export the form, the aspect ratio is all wrong.  The Form Setup is 700 pixels, letter, Portrait.  I don't see many setting options to play with.  See attached screen shots.
This is what it looks like in the editor - logo looks great.
This is what it looks like as a PDF - logo aspect ratio is hosed!

I had a similar problem (and solved it):
I combined (right click on selected files > "Combine supported files in Acrobat...") .jpg images to a PDF binder using Adobe Acrobat X Pro.
The result was a PDF with horizontally bloated pages that did not match the aspect ratio of the raw images.
    Why is that so?
Unlike Foxit PhantomPDF, Adobe Acrobat uses EXIF metadata (ExifImageWidth, ExifImageHeight) stored in the image header instead of the real dimensions of the File (ImageWidth, ImageHeight).
Windows users can verify EXIF info by using for example the free tools XnView, Exifier or best ExifToolGUI.
In my case, the image dimensions were 1200x1710 (real actual dimensions) and around 1469x2084 (EXIF metadata).
Now how can that be - this does not make any sense ?
Well, obviously, the original file had larger dimensions and was resized without deleting the EXIF dimensions.
Because Acrobat uses the EXIF info intstead of the actual dimensions, the PDF looks distorted as a result.
Again, Foxit Phantom uses the actual image dimensions when creating PDFs.
    How to solve the issue:
In case you have image files with different dimensions, the easiest way to fix this is by selectively deleting EXIF metadata using:
    1) PhotoShop for single files (File > Save for Web & Devices > set “Metadata” to “None”: http://photographylife.com/how-to-delete-exif-data#ixzz2i0wFMNpE
    2) ExifToolGUI (free) for multiple files in a folder: ExifTool direct > Command: -r -Exif:all= ( http://u88.n24.queensu.ca/~bogdan/ )

  • Video aspect ratio looks wrong in Quicktime Player

When I export a movie as a Quicktime file (ending in .mov) and then play the movie using the Quicktime Player, the aspect ratio (4:3) of the movie looks wrong, as if it is "squished down" vertically. If I open the file in FCE, the movie looks normal.
The same thing used to happen with the .mov movie file that older versions of iMovie used to create; in Quicktime Player the aspect ratio looked wrong. In this case, if I open the original QT clips (created by iMovie during import) in the Player, they looked normal. It was only if I opened the .mov file created by iMovie that referenced all those clips (in the order they appeared in the sequence) that the aspect ratio was odd. If I open any of those items directly in FCE they look normal.
I think this is behavior of the Player and not a problem with FCE (or iMovie) or the video file. I'm just wondering why this is happening and if there's any way to make the Player show the movie with the correct aspect ratio.
    Thanks!

    Hi Tom:
Affected video was imported in one of two ways:
    (1) From an old Digital8 Sony camcorder, using DV-NTSC 32Khz, directly captured into FCE.
    (2) From a Canon GL2 camcorder, using Firewire Basic DV-NTSC (48Khz), captured using an old version of iMovie. The video clips are imported into FCE and rendered.
Affected video is either exported from FCE using Export>Quicktime Movie..., or is not exported at all but simply viewed in the Quicktime Player after capture. That is, capturing from within FCE, quitting FCE, finding the captured video, and opening it in Player.
Recall that the video aspect ratio also looks wrong when playing the Quicktime file generated by iMovie (which references but doesn't contain the actual video clips), but the ratio looks right when playing the actual clips found in the Media folder, within the iMovie project folder.
However, I also have some video that I captured from the Canon for a wedding, and when I play that captured file in Player, it does NOT appear to have the wrong aspect ratio, so I'm a bit confused why this might vary.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Aspect ratio problem with AVCHD in iMovie 08

I am importing footage from a Panasonic HDC-SD9 into iMovie 08. the footage gets in there fine and looks great EXCEPT that the footage (all shot in 16:9) is squashed a little bit. in the preview clips below, it looks fine, but in the player above (and if I export it as a Quicktime file) it is squashed slightly. there are black bars above and below the footage, and (I'm guessing) were the video stretched to fill the entire area, eliminating the black bars, it would be the correct aspect ratio. I've tried importing footage form the camera supposedly shot in 4:3, and the same thing happens.
I know that I can simply do a quick edit in imovie, export it, import it into final cut pro, and stretch it back. however, I'm worried about losing quality, and more importantly, I don't know the exact ratio, since I can't even figure out what imovie is doing to the video to make it squashed, let alone in what manner.
the footage from the HDC-SD9 is AVCHD, and I understand there is something about square pixels vs. rectangular, but I don't know much about it. I have tried every iteration of imovie's limited aspect ratio settings, and I can't get it to work. I know it's meant to work well with AVCHD, so I'm assuming I'm missing something fundamental and simple. (some box to check to let imovie know I'm importing AVCHD?) it's maddening to see the footage correctly in the thumbnails, but squashed for (seemingly) no reason in the playback. can you help me out? otherwise I am going to film myself holding something that is a perfect square, then import it to imovie, then export to quicktime, then import the quicktime file into finalcut, then stretch it til the rectangle becomes a perfect square, and write down the settings for the future. seems ridiculously complicated, especially for the mac world.
I love imovie 08 (seriously, some of the new toys are just so amazing, and no render time at all!), and I love this camera. please tell me they can get along!

I think I'm having a problem similar to this. I'm using a Sharp MiniDV camera, and shooting in 16:9. When I used to import to other versions of iMovie it worked fine, but w/ iMovie 08 it is squashing and stretching the incoming video to more like 20:9 (I have no idea what the actual ratio is, this is just a guess). I tried changing import to PAL 25fps, but that didn't do any thing. Any other suggestions?
