Aspect ratio squeezes when exporting widescreen titles/effects to dv camera

I have looked through the help board and unfortunately can't find the answer to my exact question. Any and all help would be appreciated (including just pointing me to the correct posts).
I am using iMovie 6.0.2 and a Canon mv960 digital video camera. After I import and edit my movies in DV-PAL-Widescreen format, I burn them to dvd and also export back to dv tapes to save a master copy of the movie.
When I export from iMovie back to dv on the camera, any title or special effect clips get vertically squeezed (as if going back to 4:3). On the camera LCD display I see that the "widescreen" logo goes away only during these titles or effects, but then the regular footage goes back to widescreen. I have already tried exporting my movie to a Quicktime full quality movie, import that one large clip into a new project, and then export that to the camera, but the same squeezing of titles happens.
When I burn to DVD, the movie looks exactly as it does in iMovie, and I don't get this video display compression during titles and effect clips. Since I hope to keep a full quality version of all of my movies on dv tape as a backup, I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

That's interesting.
iMovie HD 6.0.2 seems to flag the titles it renders in widescreen projects as 4:3:
I did a quick test by creating a widescreen PAL project and added a title. Then I opened the normal footage media clips with MPEG Streamclip and it reported them as 16:9, but the rendered title clips were reported as 4:3. iMovie played both OK. My TRV320's LCD played untitled and titled clips similarily to a TV, but I did have to manually set the TV to 16:9 -- it automatically switched only to 14:9.
The TRV320E seemed to re-import back to a widescreen iMovie project OK.
I haven't used 16:9 in any "real" projects so this was just a quick observation. BTW, my old TRV320E does anamorphic 16:9 so there are no black borders around the image.

Aspect ratio problems when exporting from FCP and creating DVDs

Hi there
Can anyone help? I'm using FCP to edit material shot using a Sony z1 in SD 16:9 mode. My media displayed correctly in FCP with the 'anamorphic' option ticked in the browser.
I then exported my short films as QuickTime movies and created a DVD in iDVD using those video assets.
When I then viewed the films on a widescreen tv, the films did not display at the correct aspect ratio. They were horizontally elongated, as though they had been stretched twice over, so that objects, people and text appeared fatter than they should.
Can anyone let me know whether there are any settings I could change in either FCP or iDVD to stop this happening?

Aspect ratio distortion when exporting iMovie '08 xml to FCE 4

Hi, I'm working on a small piece which I started in iMovie '08. Now that I have selected all the content for the piece I have attempted to "share" as Final Cut XML. However, when I import that file into FCE 4 the aspect ratio is all out of whack. Does anyone have suggestions about how to resolve, or place to look?

XL-H1 aspect ratio error when exporting from FCP 1080p24 to compressor

PLEASE HELP
I have a finished project in fcp in a 1080p24 project.
My source footage is 1440 x 1080i 24f from an xl-h1.
When i export from final cut pro to compressor, compressor squeezes my footage into a square.
if i export to dvd from compressor the ratio is fine.
when i export in quicktime thats where the skewed image happens.

Hi StingoArmy,
There is an easy fix for this. Once you export your file to Compressor, you can apply an export option, let's say we're going to export a LAN Streaming Quicktime movie for Internet. Now click on the new bar that's been placed inside your media tab. The settings for this export item appear below in the Inspector. Just below the DESCRIPTION line are a series of options buttons. Clicking the option 2nd from the right (Geometry) opens up a new tab where you can change the dimensions. There are several ways to go about exporting to 16:9, the one I use is to change the Frame Size to "Custom (16:9)", however, you can also do the same thing by changing the Pixel Aspect to "HDV 1080i (16:9)" You should test results for both and see which is the preferred method for your final output, depending on what type of Quicktime movie you are creating.

Aspect Ratio issue when replacing a clip in Premiere CS6 with an After Effects CS6 Composition

Please assist! When I attempt to right click on a clip in my Premiere timeline and replace it with an After Effects composition, I can do so, but problems ensue.
After Effects will start up, but the composition will be in 4:3, even though the Premiere project and clip that I'm altering were both 16:9.
I was able to change the aspect ratio to 16:9 in After Effects and then edit what I wanted, but an hour later when I had finsihed, saved, and gone back to Premiere, it had smushed the replaced clip into 4:3 within Premiere.
So to reitterate:
When I replace a clip in Premiere with an AE comp, AE opens in 4:3.
I can change the AE comp to 16:9, but when I save and go back to Premiere, it has smushed the AE comp down to 4:3.
What can I do to stop this?

If you right click on the clip in the Project panel, then select Modify / Interpret Footage you will see a Pixel Aspect Ratio.
What does it say?
If it says 0.9091 then change it to 1.2121
If it says something else, come back and let me know. I will then have a different answer for you.
Also, what is the frame size of the video.

Shot in 4:3 aspect ratio, but when i capture it turns to widescreen format

I shot my footage in standard 4:3 aspect ratio, and when i import it the clip looks fine, but when i drag it to the timeline it goes into widescreen format, and i can't figure out why it is doing this. If i select the clip from my browser window and play it in my viewer window it plays fine in the 4:3 aspect ratio, but when i drag it to the timeline it goes to wide screen and it stays that way. Please help

Sounds like your sequence settings are off. If you hit command>0 (zero) you should be able to change them. One way to know they are off for sure is if when you drag your clip to the timeline you get the red line above it meaning it needs rendering. You should never have to render if your sequence settings are right.
In sequence settings make sure all your settings match the format of you clip. Frame Size, Pixel Aspect Ratio, Editing Timebase, and compressor. That should do it.
You could also just use the Easy Setup to change the whole project to match DV.

Aspect Ratio Sort and Export (File Naming)

When I crop my photos, I sometimes find that some photos work best in the 4x5/8x10 crop and others in a 2x3/4x6 aspect ratio.
Issue #1) How can I sort and find all of my images with a specific aspect ratio?
When in the Library module and setting up a filter (ctrl+f), I don't see any way to filter and sort out my aspect ratio. In the "Metadata - Label" filter fields, there is an "Aspect Ratio" value however the only options are Portrait and Landscape. (more of a photo/page layout than 'aspect ratio' to me)
** Feature Request: Please add "Aspect Ratio" options (just as presented with "r" is pressed for resize) in the Library Filter Metadata. **
Issue #2) How can I include the aspect ratio of the image (e.g. 4x5) in the exported file name?
I don't see any way to to do this either, so I have to manually find all of the images with the same aspect ratio first, then set a Custom Name field for export and export each ratio at a time.
** Feature Request: Please add "Aspect Ratio" options to the file naming fields available for selection when exporting images. Values like "4x5" and "4x6" would be great to be able to include in the filename of my images.

Titles squeezed when export from 16:9 FCP project but video OK

Hi,
I'm using Compressor to output a small QT file from FCP 5.1.4 to stream on the web; the source media is DVCPROHD 16:9. When I use the H.264 LAN presets, the video is displayed in the proper aspect ratio but the titles are tall and thin...any suggestions on how to correct this?

There is something wrong with the way Compressor handles stills & titles.

The only workaround that I have found is to export titles separate using "Export-Using QT Conversion", and then paste them into the resulting QT file created by Compressor... Really convoluted and time consuming when dealing with a lot of files and a lot of titles.
It would be great to hear from Apple about this issue.

AME Export from HDV source: Pixel aspect ratio squeezed in Queue; ok in direct export.

I have some existing HDV footage that was converted to Cineform codec (CFHD) in an .avi file that I need to export. My target requires Windows media format (.wmv Window Media video 9).
My output settings are the following:
640x480, square pixels, 29.97, lower, VBR, 2 pass unconstrained, 800 kbps.
When I export these files in a sequence directly from Premiere Pro CC (Export button), the pixel aspect ratio looks correct. (It looks ok in Premiere and in the Premiere Export window, too.)
When I export using the Queue button in Premiere to AME CC, the video renders out squeezed, as if the aspect ratio is ignored.
I can also see the squeezed video in the AME preview window when the file is rendering.
This worked OK previously in Premiere 5.5.
Is there a setting that controls this and allows normal rendering from the Queue?
Using the Queue is much preferred to avoid bottlenecks in workflow.
System: Windows 7 enterprise 64 bit, Lenovo W510, Core i7, 16GB ram.
Nvidia Quadro FX 880M
Premiere Pro CC: 7.2.1(4)
Adobe Media Encoder: 7.2.0.43 (64-bit)

I'm starting to wonder if the codec info is not read correctly when using the Queue (Cineform codec). I took your suggestions and created a new sequence with one clip and used the same settings. I opened the export settings window in two separate ways:
Export settings in Premiere (Ctrl M). All is good in the Source tab. PAR is interpreted correctly:
I sent the export to the queue, and from the job in AME clicked the "Custom" link to retrieve the same settings window.
However, the Source video PAR is not interpreted correctly:
This must be related to why the render from the AME queue is not correct.

Aspect ratio issue when watching 16'9 idvd created DVDs on regular players

I am having problems with the aspect ratio of any DVDs that I burn in iDVD as 16'9 - The original video is 16'9 and edited as such in FCP, then exported with current settings selected and then in iDVD I select a widescreen project - preview of the project is fine and when the DVD is done it plays with the correct aspect ratio if I watch on the computer's internal DVD player - but my issue is when I watch on any regular DVD player (on a widescreen tv of course) all the video looks tall and skinny, including the menu. The only way I found to get the video to look like it's natural proportion is to switch the settings to 4'3 on the DVD player, then it creates almost a "super-widescreen" look where there are bars at the top and bottom of the screen. On the otherhand, when i used to shoot in 4'3 and create DVDs as 4'3 projects, I NEVER had this problem when watching on a regular DVD player on widescreen TV! It would take up the whole screen and look normal (I know it must stretch it to fit, but it wasn't noticable). I thought creating a 16'9 video I should be able to watch on a widescreen TV and it should take up the whole screen and look normal. Please help!

Aspect ratio issue when movie burnt to DVD

I've filmed some holiday footed on my iPhone 4 and created an iMovie, exported it to iDVD and burnt a PAL 16:9 DVD. However the aspect ratio is too wide on my TV and I'm missing a lot of the picture and text which is off screen, especially in the menus and end titles. I've played about with the TV's aspect with no result. Where am I going wrong? The only thing I've noticed is that my iMovie project is in 30fps NTSC. The PAL option is greyed out in iMovie project prefs so I've set it to PAL in iDVD (which then re-rendered then movie)
Any help appreciated.

PS I do have a new Panasonic Viera 42" widescreen plasma, so it's not an old 4:3 TV or anything!

Aspect ratio problems in exporting HD movie

I have a movie shot in 1920x1080p HD from a DSLR. It's two and a half minutes long. There's some titles, a few photoshop layers, a flash file and some simple voiceover audio. Nothing too fancy all in all.
All I need to do is convert it in the same ratio so that it can play in Quick Time, but everytime I put it through the AME, it comes back slightly squished (not 4:3, but definitely not 16:9).
I've tried QT, H.264, Mpeg2, default presets, custom presets, everything. In the output box it displays my video exactly how I'd like it, but the finished product comes out differently.
The only success I've had is exporting as an MPEG4 file, and the aspect ratio comes out good, but the video itself is choppy, which none of the others are.
File sizes have ranged from 230mb to 2.3gb, so eventually I'd like to keep this down, but for now I'll be happy with anything!

I need to eventually put this video into a powerpont presentation created in mac. With a small .mov file that's fine to play on other macs. But I will run into problems when I need that powerpoint presentation to run on a PC. I think I need an MPEG file version to run on a PC.
If that's correct, how do I create a non-jumpy mpeg file that's small enough to go into powerpoint. Can I do that on AME or is it simpler to convert my .mov file in QuickTime to mpeg?

FCPX DVD of 4:3 Aspect Ratio Project Cropped on Widescreen TV

I have imported some older standard video clips (640X480) into Final Cut Pro X. When I burn a DVD of a project based on those clips, I have a problem playing the DVD on a widescreen TV. Instead of displaying the correct 4:3 aspect ratio, the video fills the screen, cropping some of the image. However, the DVD plays properly when viewed via my Mac Pro. I never had this problem using the same clips in iMovie projects. In iMovie I could set the project properties to “Fit in Frame” rather than “Crop” and the resulting DVD would play the proper 4:3 aspect ratio on a widescreen TV, with black spacers on the left and right of the video image. Unfortunately Apple phone support has not been able to resolve this problem. Any suggestions?

The Video Properties indicate NTSC SD format. However, I noticed that that gives me 720X480 resolution. Perhaps that's the problem.
OK, I just experimented and when I choose "Other" under video properties format, then I get the correct 640X480 resolution. Let me try another DVD burn with this change, and report back whether that corrects the issue. Thanks for pointing me to double check that.

Still image pixel aspect ratio wrong in exported video (but correct in Premiere renders)

I've saved a targa still image from my footage and added it to the bin. It's properties show as follows:
Image Size: 1440 x 1080
Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.3333
This correctly matches my sequence settings as I'm working with 1080p widescreen footage.
The image appears as expected in the Program window both before and after rendering previews. However, once I export my sequence as a video file, the still image is squashed (displaying incorrectly):
A work around would be to stretch out the still to a width of 1920 in Premiere so that the export displays it back at its normal aspect ratio - which works - but I don't understand why I should have to do this.
The other solution I found was to go to the bin and 'Modify > Interpret Footage' and although "Use Pixel Aspect Ratio from File" already shows the correct settings, to actively reset it (to the same pixel aspect ratio) with the 'Conform to' option:

Surely a bug?

Thanks for the quick reply. But then why does the still's properties (in my bin) show the pixel aspect ratio as 1.3333 (not square pixels, 1.0) and should it not appear incorrectly in both the preview renders and the exported video ? This seems inconsitent to me.

Aspect ratio changes when editing

I've imported a number of clips DV-format widescreen 16:9.
They look fine and I can put them togehter as a project.
However when I delete parts of a clip when they reside in the event library (lower part of the iMovie 08 window). The remaining parts of the clip change into 4:3 aspect ratio. Untouched clips (from the same import) stay in 16:9
The clip-parts that are already in the projectlibrary stay ok in 16:9
I am doing something wrong or did I ran into a bug ?

My edited clips changed to .mov. The deleted ones were already altered, so I am not sure wether that's the result of the editing (which is logic) or from the deletion (sounds strange to me). The untouched clips still have .DV and again that makes sense.
