ASR 9006 to 6509 1 gig fiber connection

I have an ASR 9006 with a SFP-GE-L connecting to a Cisco 6500.  The link shows up on the ASR side but not on the 6500 side.  If I move the SFP from the ASR to a
different 6500 chassis the connection works so I know the SFP is working.
Any ideas on making this link work?

The issue ended up being a negotiation issue.  Apparently IOS-XR is set for nonegotiate disabled by default and IOS is enabled by default.
The fix being to put "speed nonegotiate" on the IOS side interfaces and it came up

  • 100 Mbps MPLS but service provider handing of gig fiber?

Our service provider is providing 100 Mbps MPLS service to one of our remote sites that will accept the handoff via a gig fiber connection into our 3845 router using a GLC-SX-MM SMF tranciever. I'm assuming that I will have to shape the ingress traffic to 100 Mbps. Can anybody send me a link on CCO that explains how to do this? And am I correct that I will have to shape the ingress traffic? Thanks, John

    Hi,
Even though you have a fiber coming into your remote location your service provider would have rate limited it appropriately in and out from his perspective to 100MB as per the BW sold to you.
So from your question there should be no need to implement any policing in or out on your router towards the service provider.

  • STM1 Back-to-Back Between ASR 9006 and ASR 903

    Dear Gents,
Seeking your usual support to aid me to connect STM1 Back-to-Back between ASR 9006 and ASR 903.
    I have ASR 9006 comes with SPA-4XOC3-POS-V2 and SFP-OC3-MM using XR-A9K-PXK9-04.03 IOS-XR.
Also I have ASR 903 comes with A900-IMA4OS interface module with ONS-SI-155-SR-MM SFP using SASR903R1NPEK9-38S IOS-XE.
I'm using Multi Mode fiber cable between them and the interfaces never came UP UP.
Below the configuration i did to both sides.
    ASR 903 configuration:
    ASR903#sh run | sec contro
    controller SONET 0/0/0
     framing sdh
     clock source internal
     aug mapping au-4
     au-4 1 pos
    interfaces POS0/0/0.1
    ip address 10.10.10.2 255.255.255.252
    ASR 9006 configuration
    ASR9006#sh running-config controller soNET 0/1/0/0
    controller SONET0/1/0/0
     framing sdh
     clock source internal
    interface POS0/1/0/0
     ipv4 address 10.10.10.1 255.255.255.252
    Thanks in advance.

I think your 900 is running in an oc12/stm4 mode (as you seem to subrate the sonet controller), so they have a speed mismatch already although it looks like you're using the right STM1 optic.
also one side you will want to have use clock from line while the other internal, otherwise you'll get a lot of clock slips.
    cheers

  • Path Selection between 10 gig fiber and microwave

    Hello everyone,
my network is running OSPF as an IGP, i have a 10 gig Ethernet  fiber connected between two sites and a microwave link as a redundant connection.
since ospf metric is cost ( or bandwidth ), the 10 gig ethernet connection is always preferred. however, sometimes the 10 gig link is flapping or the bit error rate is bad, is there anyway to change the path selection to go through the microwave when the bit error rate in the 10 gig link is bad or the link flaps ?
basically can we make the path selection based on anything than the speed or cost ?

Bandwidth can be a metric to OER/PfR.  Much else can be used by OER/PfR.
The intent of this technology is sort of described by the names, Optimized Edge Routing (v1) and Performance Routing (v2).
Both can account for path bandwidth and/or analyze performance.
Understand typical dynamic routing protocols keep track of paths between source and destination and some have a way to "weight" paths  (for example, OSPF link cost [which by RFC, hasn't nothing to do with bandwidth, but is often based on that]).
OER/PfR, for example, can run their own SLA tests.
Years ago, I set up OER in large dual MPLS/VPN environment.  Our initial "problem", after activation, our WAN performance monitoring tools (and our users!) no longer "saw" any WAN performance issues.  They were still happening, but OER "saw" them first, and worked around them before the monitoring tools saw them.

  • Fiber Connection between different connector

I would like to make a fiber connection of SFP LC connector to GBIC modules of SC connector. Is it compatible as long as termination is correct?

It will depend on the actual signaling protocol. For example,If both are GigE SX or something similar, then all you need is a cable with the appropriate connectors on each end.
It's the signaling protocol, not the connector, that will determine compatibility. For the most part, fiber-based protocols are specific (i.e., no fallback from GigE to 100BASE-FX).

  • Troubleshooting Fiber Connection on a Catalyst 2960

I am trying to test my fiber connectivity on a Catalyst 2960 before I deploy it. So what I thought I would do is connect it to another switch in my office with a open port for the fiber connection. The other switch is a Catalyst 3560G. Here are the port configurations:
    interface GigabitEthernet0/2
    switchport trunk allowed vlan 1,100
    switchport mode trunk
    macro description cisco-switch
    interface GigabitEthernet0/25
    switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
    switchport trunk allowed vlan 1,100
    switchport mode trunk
The first one is the catalyst 2960 and the 3560G is the second.
When you show the interface for each of these it shows that it recognizes the media but the line protocal and the GigbitEthernet Port is down.
    Any Ideas?

Sorry... a fiber optic cable with a connector on each end.
To aid in troubleshooting, many times we loopback the signal back to the originating device. An optical loopback is just connecting the transmit (Tx) to the receive (Rx).
The multimode SFP/GBIC transceiver you are using will allow you to directly connect the Transmit and Receive ports without damage to the unit. This should provide you with a green link LED.
If so, then you can reconnect your fibers and loopback (connect the two fibers together) at the far end of the fiber link (use an optical adapter) and see if you get a green LED.

  • Gig DWDM connection between 2 x 3750's

We have a customer that has a gig DWDM connection between 2 cat3750's. The interfaces are SMF.
He is complaining of throughput issues. He has a pair of AIX servers transfering a file between them using we believe RPC (not 100% sure). If he does it across the gig link he gets 300mbps, if he does it across a single switch or across two switches locally connected he gets 700mbps. I have checked the cfgs, and fibre connections and interface errors. they have also used spare 3750's to do the test again. Not sure if the transfer suffers in both directions. They are not using oversized frames. We have not replaced the GBIC's yet.
The links have been tested by ISP, and show now issues, the tets results show now latency. The 3750 code is SEC.
    Any ideas

Is MLS QoS enabled on the switch by any chance?
I expirienced trouble with 3750 using 1000-BASE-SX and 1000-BASE-LH lasers that gave poor peformance with file transfers.
This was the case on switches that had MLS QoS enabled for IP phones.
The symptoms are described in bug toolkit CSCeg29704. There is a workaround. Upgrading to 12.2(25)SED or higher resolves the problem.
    Release Notes
After enabling QOS on 3750 and 3560 switches, certain application (mostly bursty
and TCP based) experience significant performance degradation due to unexpected
packet drops on some of the egress queues.
This is due to initial default egress queue threshold settings
(when qos enabled) not optimized for this type of traffic pattern.
This initial default queue threshold settings (when qos enabled)
thus need to be changed to accommodate these traffic.
    Workaround:
Tune the egress queue thresholds parameters to
allocate more to the affected queues.
Specifically, egress queue 2 thresholds need to have the following settings:
    Thresholds1 = 200
    Thresholds2 = 200
    Reserved = 50
    Maximum = 400
    e.g.
    mls qos queue-set output 1 threshold 2 200 200 50 400
    mls qos queue-set output 2 threshold 2 200 200 50 400

  • Fiber Connection with Netgear GS752TS

A dark fiber connection with SFPs is no different than a 1 foot long copper patch cable that connects the two switches as if they were in the same room (less than 1 foot apart). Perhaps you are over thinking it. Just configure the ports much like you would if the switches were next to each other.

A local company has started offering Fiber Connections at much better speeds then Time Warner. They threw in Dark Fiber (Secure Connections) between our two offices (2 miles between the two offices). Unfortunately the techs at the company are not used to Netgear (only knows Cisco) and don't know how to get the two offices to connect over Netgear with our new Dark Fiber. They did get us two SFP connectors with Dual Mode Communication and connected the Fiber on both ends. I am a new Network Admin and still trying to figure this out myself. I thought I would be able to set a routing rule....saying if the IP Address destination is at our second location to send the communication over the Fiber Connection instead of the VPN/internet connection....I have been reading through the Software Admin Manual and searching the net but so far I am not...

  • Cisco ASR 9006 IOS XR 4.3.0 aaa authorization

    Hi,
I've configured two Cisco ASR 9006 with IOS XR 4.3.0 with the aaa. I've a problem with the authorization statement.
I need to distiguish two groups.
Network Administrator (Full access, show, configuration etc etc)

aaa authentication login default group ACS local
I have configured two Shell Command Authorization Sets in my ACS. One for ReadOnly and one for Full Access.
The ReadOnly Group (called AccessoSolaLettura) is on the attacched png called asr_1.PNG
The Full Access Group (called AccessCompleto) is on the attached png called asr_2.PNG
I associated this Shell Authorization sets to two users group. (Network Administrator and Network Viewer).
The first one with Level 15 and the second one with Level 7. (Attached file ACS_1.png and ACS_2.png)
Can you tell me if the ACS configuration is right and which configuration is needed on the ASR?
The ACS Release is 4.2(0) Build 124.
    Tnx

    Hi Leonardo,
In XR we have the concept of tasks and taskgroup for determining what a user can do, and we recommend using this. For tasks we have the read/write/execute/debug permissions.
For instance to run 'show bgp summary' we need the read permission on the task BGP. Instead of assigning individual permissions per user we can create a taskgroup and the user can inherit everything from a taskgroup.
So for instance we can add read BGP, read OSPF, and read system to the taskgroup test. We can then have the user inherit the taskgroup test and get all the permissions that taskgroup has. We can inherit multiple tasks and taskgroups.
In addition we have some predefined task groups (for the full access user you will want the cisco-support and root-system taskgroups).
You can find some more information in the following posts

  • Problem with Fiber connection

    Hi,
do you ever faced such an issue:
have a Catalyst 6509 with the following module:
    4 16 Pure SFM-mode 16 port 1000mb GBIC WS-X6816-GBIC SAL0734KHPN
then I use a Gbic LX to connect to another switch on a remote location, using a fiber 50 micron with around 300meters. On the other side I've a normal 3550 Switch. With this uplink, I get connectivity, and I can ping each other, but no other protocol will work, like for example Telnet will not work.
If in the side of the 6509 Switch I replace by another 3550, using the same Gbic, the connection is immediatly working for all protocols...
    I'm getting without answers...
    Can you help?
    Thanks
    Jorge

    Hi Jorge,
You are able to ping even when you have cat6k so there should not be any problem is data communication or passing of data.
You are not able to telnet as an example can you please confirm if you are running CATOS or IOS?
If IOS can you please post the output from sh run having line vty configs and if you are running CATOS can you post the output of "ip permit list"

  • Solaris containers and Fiber connection

    Hi guys,
I have sucsessfully migrated solaris 8 system to solaris 10 containers. and also mounted some RAID enabled partition on non global zone without any issue. now i need to connect a fiber channel to my host OS (solaris 10) and add the SAN partition to my container (solaris 8). if i run cfgadm command it says cfgadm: Library error: Device library initialize failed: Invalid argument.
there are some other ways to mount the SAN (mount the SAN on host and export the partition to container). but i need the above method . is it possible to mount the SAN partition from the non-global zone ? if so how should i do it .
    thanks,
    Tharanga

As far as i know you can't give the non-global zones the required permissions which is needed to mount a FC LUN directly into the non-global zone.
I think you have to mount the LUN in the global zones, and then loop-back-mount them into the non-global zone.

  • Fiber connection between two switches

    Hi All,
Here is the situation, I have two switches which are SF200 and SG300 and trying to link them up using sfp module ( fiber).
They are both in trunk mode and the connection is up but nothing or no ip traffic goes through it .
I have ensured allowed vlans are correct, native vlan do match but still nothing .
Then i did a port monitor on it ( replicate it to another port) but all I could see was bunch of stp,arp , mdsn and llc traffic. nothing to do with do1q extension.
I used wireshark , would I be able to monitor trunk traffic at all? would the protocol be dot1q ?
However the fiber link works if I plug one of the connection which goes to the sg300 to a fiber convertor and then connect a rj45 cable from the convertor to the sg300 rj45 port. that is the only way which it works. This suggest to me a possible issue with the fiber module on the sg300 however I have tried few differnet modules and still nothing , I did even try the one which is on the sf200 ( working ) and still nothing .
What boggles me is the fact that the link is seen as up and all good by both switches but nothing does go through them.
Any one know what the cause could be ?
    Thanks
