Assembling Montages with Scenes from Separate VHS Tapes?

I have quite a number of 15- to 20-year-old VHS tapes that I want to bring into the 21st century.
I just got a new computer, and have now transferred the tapes to a hard drive, using the ATI All in Wonder card to convert the VCR signals to Windows .mpg files.
I would now like to take snippets from each of the VHS tape files that I can save as individual scenes, which I can then recombine into videomontages that can be saved to DVD and to hard drives.
However, I am finding that Premiere Elements 7 does not seem to be designed to allow this seemingly straightforward project to be easily performed.
Each of the original tapes generated 2 mpg files. So far I have had no trouble bringing those 2 files into Pre7 to be saved as a unique project from a given tape. If, spread over the 2 files from a single original tape, there are 4 scenes of particular interest that I would like to save for use in several montage films, how do I go about saving them as independent scenes? I guess I am looking for the equivalent of a global clipboard that I can save to and from which I can pull scenes to be used in several projects.
I have no trouble using in and out markers and the scissors function to manually edit the clips (the 2 or 3 files produced from each of the original tapes) in a project to get the scenes I am looking for. But I don't know how to save those new subclips to be accessed in multiple other projects.
Is there an easy way to do this in Pre7. And if not, what alternative software might I look into using?

If you wish to use these scenes in multiple projects then you need to export each scene as a seperate video file. Best to export as DV-AVI as it is more compatible with PE7 than MPEG and should give fewer issues. To export a scene place the work area bar (WAB), the grey bar across the top of the timeline with handles each end, over the section you want top export... drag the handles to position the WAB over the scene you want to export. Then select File>Export>Movie and in Settings under Range select Work Area Bar.
If you just want to create sub-clips to be used in the project you are working on you can double click the clip in the project media bin and it will open in the preview monitor. Then you can set in and out points and drag the clip from the preview monitor back to the media bin. You will then be prompted for a sub-clip name. Note however that these are not "real" clips... they are just pointers referencing the scene.

How can I view DVD's that I dubbed from old vhs tapes? I finalized them and can play on other DVD players but not my IMac. Is there a specific program?

A DVD is a DVD, unless it's been authored in a non-standard way. When you insert it in your Mac, do you at least see the disk appear on the desktop? Does it have a VIDEO_TS folder in it, containing various files?
If you open DVD Player manually (from the Applications folder), does it see it and start playing? If not, try downloading VLC (free) and see if that works.

Capturing from old vhs tapes

I want to capture a bunch of old VHS tapes into CS6. I have an analog to digital converter that I'm going to plug a VCR into and a Firewire cable from the converter into my computer.
1.) Can anyone recommend any general settings for making sure I get the highest quality possible?
I'm looking at using the following settings:
Sequence Preset
DV - NTSC
Standard 48kHz
and then going to:
- File > Capture
- Press play on the controller at the bottom of the window
- Press record on the controller at the bottom of the window
Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

There are a few ways to take care of this. One is to crop the 2 pixels from the top and the 2 from the bottom from the source when you export. If you do that, you can scale it up a bit to take care of it, or stretch to fit. Either way, it is unlikely to be noticeable since the analog wasn't picture perfect to begin with. Or, you can just leave the black above and below. Hardly noticeable at all - depending on how you display it. If you put it full size on a white web site then it is a problem. Playing it out on a DVD is not problem at all. Nobody sees that far to the edge on most TVs anyway. Although more and more they show the entire picture.
Basically, I suggest that you capture a few seconds of video and play around with it before you get too far into the project. You might not even have the noise.

Another option is to buy a digital camcorder with a Pass-thru option.
A final option is a digital analog converter like those sold by Canopus. These are expensive.

Imported Video Displays "Play" from starting VHS Tape

I purchased an Canopus ADVC110 to convert old VHS tapes into Digital for editing in IMovie HD6. Everything works fine except the only way to get the VHS tape to start playing is to hit play on the VCR. The word "Play" displays on the screen for about 10 seconds after starting to play the tape. The on screen "Play" is then transferred to my digital video during import. Any workaround ideas? Or VCR's that won't display any on screen text? Thank you.

I would try another VCR. Mine flaches a small triangle in the start and I think that I do as follows:
• start play on VCR
• start import in iMovie
• press rewind on remote to VCR - then it ruches backwart to start - and after releasing it starts
to play again but now from very start and as I remember without trangle
• end import when done
• cut of the start of the clip with the very beginning and rewinding.

I copied a movie home movie from a VHS tape to a disc. I want to edit it and make it a part of iMovie. How do I do this?

I used a software product called Honestech 5.0 from VHS to Disc. I have converted several of my VHS tapes to discs. I would like to modify the movies on these discs. I do not have any idea how to do this. Can it be done?
I have iDVD, iTunes,and iMovie on my Apple computer.

Thanks for the assistance. I will purchase the software. Copying VHS to DVD disc went well? I wanted to clean up the movies I copied by editing. I plan to use iMovie to do this and then copy this edited version to a DVD disc.

Editing from a DVD created from a VHS tape

I have been coping a lot of VHS tapes of the kids to DVD's (DVD-RW). Now I want to load the DVD into iMovie and edit. Do anyone know of a program that will do this?

Go to the above link and download the Cinematize 2 product. This works great, and it is very easy to use. I transfered all of my old HI-8 videos to DVD. I had the SAME problem as you, I could not load the new DVDs to iMovie. Cinematize allows you to "cinematize" the DVD, to allow it to work in iMovie. I am now able to edit all of my old Hi-8 videos, because Cinematize allowed iMovie to read my newly formed DVDs.

Capturing in FCE from VHS Tape/VHS Player - Can it be done??

I capture no problem using a 4-6pin Firewire for DV Tapes; and pulling them in from either a Sony DV or a Cannon GL-2 DV.
Does anyone know of a (somewhat low-cost) VHS Player, that has a digital connection so I can pull in source from old VHS Tapes - or digitize some of these VHS Tapes I own, but can no longer get them on any other media..?
I have searched for USB-VHS Players and they seem expensive, however, I would imagine that a USB connection would be wrong... and anything else I find with better digital connections put the VHS Player/Recorders in the HD category and get muderously expensive. I seriously am just looking to capture maybe 10-12 tapes, and would love to have the capability if the need ever arises again for production work; but don't forsee a ton of it.
I have been contemplating daisy-chaining a VHS Player through my DV Cam(s) to see if that would work - but figured I would check here first, being that somebody may know an easy solution... or has done this before and knows the exact remedy.

I have done this many times, using my DVD recorder which has VHS tape and a DVD recording facility. If you can find a friend with one, it is simple. Put the VHS tape in the VHS side of the machine and a DVD recordable (recordable many times) into the DVD slot. Use the machine's dubbing feature to copy to the DVD. After that, Finalise the DVD to allow it to be read by a computer (or a stand-alone DVD recorder). Use Toast to read the DVD and to create a QT movie of your recording. Then Import the QT movie into FCE.

Importing VHS tape from VCR into iMovie

I'm trying to find out if it is possible to connect a VCR to my iMac and import the content from a VHS tape into iMovie in a similar way to connecting a camcorder to the iMac.

I have done lots of this.
To get your VHS video into iMovie, look at the Grassvally ADVC300. Audio and Video go in, FireWire comes out. It also comes with a nice Macintosh application that works flawlessly with iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11 (I have used it a few times with iMovie 09 also).
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material. The ADVC300 will take Audio and Video from any source and convert it to FireWire (iMovie will treat it like a camera).

I would use iMovie 06 with iDVD 09/11, why?
iMovie 09/11 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.
If your primary workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, iMovie '06 is better suited. Your movie will arrive at iDVD in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels aspect ratio, and original quality. If you share your movie from iMovie 09/11, it gets re-rendered at 640x480 or less, and then iDVD upscales it back to 720x480. The end result is obviously not as good.
iMovie 06 and iDVD 09 is a "lossless" combination.

Need help with watching DVD-R from dubbed VHS

For some reason when I try to play a DVD-r that I recorded from a VHS tape, it will not play. I get the message that the disc is empty and yet I know it is not because it will play in the DVD player

Adobe Audition 3.0 and Pinnacle 700 USB - How to record audio from VHS tapes???

I am new to Adobe Audition 3.0. I need your help.
Actually I am having a old Pinnacle 700 USB capture card. I want to record some audio in my computer by Adobe Audition.
I downloaded and installed required driver for Pinnacle 700 USB (for Vista).
But when I tried to capture audio from my VHS tapes, It not showing proper options. I don't know how to proceed further.
Could any one please help me... Please let me know what all I need to do.

The Pinnacle is a video capture device and as such captures the video and audio into one MPEG or DV stream. Audition can't see it as an audio card and therefore can't capture audio directly from your video source. However once you have captured a video file using the Pinnacle you can probably get to the audio by using the Open Audio from Video command in the File menu in Audition.

Why does the acquisition from vhs tape stops ?

Are your preferences set to "Abort capture on dropped frames"?
Edit > Preferences > Capture
If so, try unchecking the box.

Converting my VHS tapes to a DVD using a Canon Elura 100 camcorder

I'm new to iMovie and this discussion board
I am trying to convert my VHS tapes to my powerbook G4 using iMovie 3.03. I've connected the wires correctly, I've tried it with a tape in the camcorder and without a tape. iMovie shows the camera connected, but I do not see the video from the VHS tape on my laptop. I changed the AV DV to "on" like the instructions stated.
#1 do I need to upgrade to iMovie 6?
#2 Anyone know of the common problems associated with this? Specifically with the Canon Elura 100
G4 power book Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Thanks for the response. Yes, I am able to import from my camcorder/miniDV to my laptop. I've also made sure I don't have any other devices connected except for the power cord on the camcorder and my latop, which shouldn't matter right?
I have set up my camcorder to my VCR and tried to record on my camcorder, but that did not work either. I did not check in the manual if I had it connected right, or the settings right with this process. I'll try again and check with the manual. Also, I'm going to get iMovie 6 sometime this week, maybe that might make a difference?

Using iMovie for VHS Tape copy

I am trying to transfer some media from a VHS tape to burn to DVD. I have copied the VHS tape into iMovie successfully but find that the files are much too large to burn to a dvd. I used a DAC 100 to convert and did them in 16 bit. Is there a way to keep quality and transfer about 1 hour and 20 minutes of VHS tape to a regular 4.7 gig dvd?

Hi Jerry and welcome!
DV in iMovie runs at 13GB per hour, hence the large file sizes.
iDVD is only concerned with length (max 2 hours as stated, including menus, themes, transitions etc), and will compress that to fit a standard 4.7 GB DVD.
So no worries - 1 hr 20 mins will work perfectly!
