Asset management tool
I currently run LMS, NCS and Prime Infrastructure (testing). We're trying to figure out a way to manage all of our devices and assets that aren't on the network, on top of what LMS is configured for. We don't want to configure the device, just to add it to LMS unmanaged. Is there a tool or product that Cisco provides which allows for manual input of devices to track asset tags, serials and other properties, without attaching them to the network?
I didn't see of any way to do it on LMS, as an unmanaged device doesn't allow for changes in the properties. We have a room full of spare equipment and want to track all of it for property management.
Thanks,
Mat
We have a couple different apps for enterprise-wide property management, but they're pretty much garbage. I just wondered if Cisco had a tool for this so we could keep networking equipment apart from the mud. Our next solution was to just make a spreadsheet in Sharepoint, but I wanted to check on here first to absolve all options first.

As an asset management tool it should manage all images but only adjust raw
Is Aperture an image management tool, raw converter/workflow tool, or both?
Let it be both! Restrict what is is ALLOWED to ADJUST, but manage it all.
When I do a shoot, I start out with 300-1000 RAW images.
By the time I am finished with the client I will have narrowed the pile of image assets down to 20% of the original RAW files, JPGs of all of those, AND 10% of the selected originals will also end up as layered PSD/TIFF files. But when I go back in and want to open a PSD file then why not allow just that Then save it back as the same or a version..
OR when I tell it to open a PSD file in CS2 it will as "make a version(full or flat), or edit original?" and of course a "don't ask me again for this format" check box!
So why not leave the layered PSD/TIFF files alone and NOT allow them to be adjusted, only managed?
Think about it, IF I want to adjust my multilayered PSD file I will most definitely only trust that to CS2 where I retain full creative control over the layers, and I can output a version if I want!
IF I am crazy enough to feel the need to use the shallow tools of Aperture to tweak the brightness/level/curves/saturation/WB/etc/etc of a flattened COPY of my layered PSD file then I will make a copy and drag it into Aperture. By shallow I mean that CS2 and layers has much more control than the single layer tools of Aperture.
As an option leave it open as a configuration choice in the prefs... "Adjustable image formats: RAW, JPG" and even on a per image basis, right-click--> image status-->Adjustable or Unadjustable.
Yes, I sent this idea off to Apple!Moki,
Right there with you. Here's my rough scenario:
1. I shoot 500 RAWs.
2. Cull down to 100 keepers.
3. Client culls down to their 50 selects.
4. Anywhere from 25-50 become layered PSD files, depending on the presentation the client wants (sizes, packages, borders, special effects, etc.).
5. In addition to those 25, there may be *completely new* composites (PSD's) created from combinations of the 25 -- this isn't a version of one of the original masters -- it is a *completely new* image that Aperture needs to manage in the project (so import of PSD without flattening and/or allowing Photoshop to Save-As into the Aperture library is a must).
I'd even add to your request about allowing adjustments. It would be totally cool if the adjustment tools were context-sensitive, enabled when working with an image (like RAW or JPG) where Aperture can adjust, and disabled when working with an image (like layered PSD or TIFF) that it won't adjust.
Anyway, I have complete confidence that eventually, the RAW conversion will be fixed, so even though that's an immediate glaring issue, it doesn't seem to me to be the long-term workflow killer. Being able to traverse this editing stage of the workflow with Photoshop is crucial. Without this, its basically
a complete project export after the initial organization stage, and the rest of the workflow is either managed entirely in another tool, or a complete pain to bring back into Aperture for output, which leaves files strewn everywhere for backup and archiving.

Aperture as a Multi-User Digital Asset Management Tool
Does anyone have any experience using Aperture in a multi-user environment? I'm trying to compare it to Cumulus by Canto which is designed as a multi-user tool.
I realize that each user would have a copy of Aperture on their Mac, but are there other issues that are not such as multi-variable searching capabilities of one versus the other. My gut tells me that Cumulus is more robust and can handle much larger libraries as well as all types of digital data and can search within document such as InDesign for a particular image.
Thanks
--MitchThere is no possible way you can use Cumulus and
actually save money.
I don’t expect to save money. I expect to save time finding info, and avoiding duplication of almost everything we have
Stepping into digital asset management is a far bigger
issue than your boss can imagine. Try not to take this
personally, but your initial question about using
Aperture as an enterprise or workgroup DAM suggests you
have no idea what you're suggesting or possibly getting
into. Canto is all smoke and mirrors unless you can
afford the training and have dedicated, competent and
engaged support personnel.
Nothing taken personally. The question was asked because management is promoting Aperture as the end-all and be-all of imagement, whereas I’m looking for a tool to manage all our documents
Before you go much further, you need to understand
databases and you need to understand that DAM's return
on investment is not about saving money, it's about
preventing the spending of money; a huge difference and
there are few mgrs who can parse that difference from
the sales hype. Buy a copy of "The DAM Book" and try to
get someone to explain databases, cataloging
applications and server-based storage to you.
I understand databases quite well, but I will get a copy of the book you mentioned. I am running an Xserve in my environment, so I do understand servers and OS X Server.
I wish you tremendous luck and hope your experiences
are better than most of the Canto customers I have ever
met, including me. You just have no idea how expensively
wrong your decision to employ Cumulus could turn out to
be. Not that it's a bad product (although we thoroughly
despise it); it's sold as a miracle. Cumulus is a
supremely complex (not necessarily complicated),
over-designed and totally un-Macintosh application.
What version of Cumulus are you using, and why are you so unhappy with it? May I contact you off line to discuss this?
Thanks for the reply

I'm working with a client that has an intranet and CS6 and would like to use Bridge to manage our digital assets. Can multiple computers use bridge effectively over a network?
Bridge is not designed for use over a network nor is it official supported by Adobe for that matter.
The application itself uses its data written to the user library for one computer. Some people have managed with great care and knowledge to let it function over a network but I think as soon as you let people write data them selfs from different workstations things pretty soon get bad due to not having this data available to other users.
The Image archivist is one that has succeeded to use Bridge over a network, google this name and you will find his blog -
Sharepoint - asset management?
Dear all,
Can you please help me define what the functional advantages and disadvantages are of using Sharepoint as an asset management tool?
Thank you so much, we're looking at sharepoint or spiceworks for the job and I need to draw a comparison of them both.Have you reviewed the Asset management overview that Microsoft provide on SharePoints Asset management functionality. You don't want to focus on advantages or disadvantages as the only disadvantage is if it can;t deliver on a mandatory requirement
- what exactly is your requirements?
Once you know that then you can conduct a GAP analysis of something like the Asset Library and whatever it is your looking at in Spiceworks.
Perhaps start here:

Hi all
Has anyone setup ARD Server to be a succesful and reliable Asset Management tool, recording changes in software, configuration (e.g. OS X version), allocation (e.g. moving a Mac from one person to another) ?
Is it true you can extend ARD to use MySQL db and PHP? (I thought I had an article on it but can't find it.)
Before I discard ARD 3 and invest in Casper or other such tool, I just want to know it can do what we need.
Welcome any sugegestions and input.
Regards
C.I would not consider ARD to be a true asset management tool in and of itself. It can help gather asset information, but it's tools for manipulating and reporting such data are rudimentary at best. But if you have, or can write, tools that can work with an SQL database, then ARD might be part of a good solution. ARD using PostgreSQL. The schema is detailed in Appendix D of the ARD 3 Administrator's Guide, and outdated but probably still useful information on the general operation can be found here:
http://developer.apple.com/appleapplications/ardsql.html
The Casper suite is definitely more complete as a single solution, though. -
Adobe Bridge As A Digital Asset Manager
I've begun to work more with digital stills in my work with FCE. Bringing stills for touch up into Photoshop CS4 is typically part of the work flow. Adobe includes Adobe Bridge as one way to import the stills.
Adobe also suggests that Bridge is a "powerful program for previewing and managing a diverse array of assets." This suggests that Bridge can be used as a Digital Assets Manager (DAM) for stills, audio, swf, and video files.
The more work we do in media development - the more we need to better manage our media. I'm curious if there are any with experience attempting to use Bridge as a DAM and if so, how it has proved as a viable tool for asset management. Please let me know of any experience or knowledge you may have.
Thanks!I posted it to this group for three reasons.
1) I'm curious if Bridge really does "bridge" well between Adobe and Apple products or is it really just for Adobe products. With Final Cut, we often find ourselves bridging between these competing companies. Id Bridge a viable solution?
2) Are there viable DAM products out there that media professionals are successfully using and if so what are they and is Bridge one of them?
3) Like many of us on this list, I use FC and Photoshop. Have FC users found Bridge to be a viable DAM solution or not for these tools?
Hope that helps to clarify my question. -
ATG publishing(asset management), staging, production topology configuration
I want to configure atg publishing, staging and production databases/datasources and servers for a typical atg commerce site.
I do not want to use CIM tool to do the same. Hence, can anyone tell me what are the sql scripts to run on PUBLISHING(Asset Management), STAGING and PRODUCTION databases?
It will be great if you can give me scripts specifically for VERSIONING, SWITCHING and CORE schemas.
Am not able to find whole set of instruction at one place. Please help meYou don't have all the scripts at one place.
You need to identify the modules you need and in each module you have the scripts in the sql folder.
Other way is for each product (CA, Merchandising, CSC etc), ATG provides the list of scripts to be executed in the specific product documentation.

Asset Manager Packaged Application
Hi,
I need to get a copy of the Asset Manager Packaged Application but it has been removed from the Packaged Applications page
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/apex/application-express/packaged-apps-090453.html
Does anyone have a copy of the demo on apex.oracle.com that I can get to?
Many Thanks
PaulHi Moe,
APEX 4.2.2 is not missing a packaged application - the "Asset Manager" package application has not been scheduled for release yet. Although that packaged application name was referred to on Marc's slide deck, it has not yet been made available. Please note the safe harbor slide, slide 3, in that slide deck, which essentially states that the information contained in the slide deck is not a commitment to deliver.
All packaged applications available in your instance are listed under the "Packaged Applications" tab. During an upgrade process, any new packaged applications will be added to that list. You don't need to do any additional steps during an upgrade. Although "Asset Manager" is not yet available, you may find it useful to review the available applications, where you may find one that meets your requirements.
I hope this helps.

Pool asset management planning board (PAM03)
Hi experts,
PAM03 comes with default icons/labels for vehicle pooling. For example in the tool bar there is a filter for 'licence plate' or 'vehicles' for sorting. As you know the PAM can be used for variety of assets such as IT. I wanted to know if you've ever attempted to update the planning board to be used for assets other than vehicles.
I believe in note 1272432 there is mention to this functionality using function module PAMS_GRAPH_UC_OTHERS. I'm still trying to figure out how this works so any input is appreciated.
ThanksHi PAM user, the steps necessary for PAM are described in the following places, at the sap Help portal
http://help.sap.com/erp2005_ehp_04/helpdata/en/2b/1a73268dd74a0988c00a90171294f7/frameset.htm
http://help.sap.com/erp2005_ehp_04/helpdata/EN/0b/5ad2c9e2f249abad4df1479243a001/frameset.htm
Make sure you activate the SAP Business Function for PAM, which is LOG_EAM_PAM (via transaction SFW5). This will also provide the right settings within config for the planning board and Pool Asset Management.
Only thing that does not automatically gets updates, is table PAMS_VSTAI, which needs to have the following entries:
Pool Asset Management ABGH 04 Productive Split I3908 Picked Up
Pool Asset Management AUFE 02 Completed Split I3910 Settled
Pool Asset Management DISP 01 Productive Split I3902 Assigned
Pool Asset Management GELA Completed Split I3905 Deleted by requestor
Pool Asset Management GELD Completed Split I3903 Deleted by planner
Pool Asset Management NDIS 01 Reqmt I3901 Need
Pool Asset Management RESM 06 Productive Split I3907 Reserved
Pool Asset Management RGBE 03 Completed Split I3909 Returned

Pool Asset Management STOR 05 Completed Split I3904 Planned need revoked
Pool Asset Management SY01 08 Absence Maintenance/ Repair

I hope this helps you in setting up the solution. Feel free to provide feedback on if it worked.

Hello,
I am looking for ideas/help. I currently have a BB Z10 (10.1.0.2039) with Verizon Wireless. The company has a BB Enterprise Server for older devices (I previously was on that). I bought a Z10 several months ago and have been connecting to the corporate network through Lotus Traveler. They do not have and will not implement a BB 10 Enterprise Server. Some in IT informed that if the company used the BB software they could manage all devices..... not accepted.
All my contacts, calendar, and company email is funneled to the BB Hub.....
So my company is implementing a Mobile Asset Management Service that I have to sign up for (Airwatch?). They only support Android and IPhone.
Will future versions of the BB OS support Android Apps.... Soon (I have less than 2 weeks)
I have read where it is possible to put the device in development mode to run Android Apps. I don't know if that will work with this and have no idea how stable the phone is in that mode. I travel internationally so I don't know how a development mode would work overseas. Any thoughts?
I like my Z10 but will need to switch to keep functionality if I can't find a work around
Any assistance ????
Thanks for any help.Hi and Welcome to the Community!
BB10 devices have the ability to run .apk apps via special methods. Development Mode is used only for installing the app...not for normal operation. So you install (side-load) the app in Development Mode, then go back to normal mode for normal operations.
If a .bar file for the .apk app already exists somewhere, you can side load it to the BB10 device and see if it works or not. If there is not yet any .bar file, there is an app called SideSwype that can convert many .apk apps to .bar and install it to your device.
Good luck!

Disk Utitlity has "Lost Connection" with Disk Management tool"
[ Edited by Apple Discussions Moderator; please start a new topic about your technical issue. ]
Running OSX10.3.8
I installed:
"iTunes" (6.0.2)
"iPod Updater 2005-11-17" ((null))
"iChat Update" (2.1)
Went to repair disk permissions
I get this error:
Disk Utitlity has "Lost Connection" with Disk Management tool" Please quit Disk Utility.
then it says quitting Disk Utility may render the disk useless. Stopping the scan just gives a "stopped by User" red text message in the DU screen.
Had to Quit. No other way out.
Now it will not repair "or" verify Disk permissions at all.
What to do?
Powermac G4 1.25ghz, OS9/OSX Mac OS X (10.3.8)Getting the same results booting off of the install CD. I even ran fsck -y after a soft boot(command S). Note I also installed the iPod updater and iChat update.
I'm getting a crash log that has to do with DiskManagement
Path: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskManagement.framework/Resources/DiskManage mentTool
I tossed the pref file for Disk utility and tried to locate a pref for the Disk Management but nada...
Is there a prefs file that needs to be tossed?
Anyone do a recent Onyx Maintainence cleaning?
Is there a way to do an iTunes Uninstal and reinstall a previous version?

'Disk Utility has lost connection with Disk Management Tool' w/ RAID 10 set
Using 4 internal drives, I have specified the following setup for each:
2 partitions, 1 'speed' of 5 GB and 1 'data' of whatever remains.
The 4 speed partitions stripe to a single RAID volume correctly.
The 4 data partitions are used to make a RAID 10 volume as follows:
The first 2 data partitions are mirrored to make a 'data-A'
The next 2 data partitions are mirrored to make a 'data-B'
These complete correctly.
Upon attempting to strip data-A and data-B in order to finish the RAID 10 setup, Disk Utility quits with the following message:
"Disk Utility has lost connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility'.
A search here and on the nets reveals only that this message appeared in 10.3.x when attempting to repair disk permissions and had to do with a rogue iTunes support file. This is occurring on a blank system (no iTunes installed) so I don't think its the same cause.
Note that I was able to complete this setup under Tiger several times without issue, so it seems to be unique to Leopard. Does anyone know what is going on and hopefully suggest a workaround? To answer my own issue and leave a marker here for others, I was able to successfully set up a RAID 10 partition using diskutil, indicating that the problem is Disk Utility itself and not the RAID implementation.
Disk Utility has proven itself to be bugridden (must restart frequently to get updated view of volumes; drops device names at various times; etc.) and this latest bug would seem to suggest that it should be avoided in favor of diskutil for any serious RAID construction. -
Disk Utility has Lost Connection with the Disk Managment Tool
Hi,
For starters, this problem is not associated with the thread that Brian Z. has posted at the top of this forum. Having said that, here's my problem:
I had installed Security Update 2006-003, and Quicktime 7.1. Permissions were repaired before and after each installation, and all went well.
Some hours later, I was experimenting with Apple Remote Desktop. I had activated ARD in the System Preferences>Sharing pane, and it provided me an IP address associated with ARD. I then turned on Airport, and ARD provided me with an IP address associated with that connection. However when I turned off my modem connection, System Preferences>Sharing hung, and had to be Force Quit.
Console Log follows:
===== Mon May 15 2006 ===== 21:09:09 America/Anchorage =====
2006-05-15 21:09:17.488 System Preferences[2732] Can't open input server /Library/InputManagers/Menu Extra Enabler.bundle

2006-05-15 21:09:48.415 System Preferences[2732] ### Error:268435460 File:FileSharing.m Line:343
Thinking a plist had become corrupted, I trashed the following:
com.apple.systempreferences.plist
com.apple.RemoteDesktop.plist
com.apple.Remotemanagement.plist
com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist.
System Preferences started out very slowly, but then all the panes except Sharing would work ok.
I booted from the install disk and performed a Disk Repair. There were no problems reported.
When I tried to run a Repair Permissions, after about 20 seconds I got the, "Disk Utility has lost connection with the disk management tool and can not continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility."
I quit D.U. and the Installer, and was able to successfully run a Repair Permissions from the D.U. in my Utilities folder. It had no problems to report.
Continuting to troubleshoot the System Preferences problem, I then trashed the com.apple.preferencepanes.cache. This solved my System Preferences>Sharing problem.
However, I am still unable to perform a Repair Permissions after booting from my install disk (I get the subject message). Repairing permissions from the Disk Utility in my Utilies folder works fine.
Any thoughts out there on a logical way to troubleshoot where my problem is? Is there a way to get a console log when I'm running DU from the install disk, or a comparable source??
Thanks,
BobI found this crash log that was generated about the time I had problems with System Preferences hanging.
Thoughts?
