  • How do you keep a 23.98 file from switching to 29.97

    I have exported an mpeg-2 file from compressor using the 23.98 setting, and am trying to maintain the 23.98 frame rate in dvd studio pro- when exporting out of compressor as m-peg 2. You are supposed to be able to send it as 23.98 to dvd studio, and dvd players are able to decode it from 23.98 to 29.97- so you (the dvd author) get faster encode times, and more data storage and higher data rates-- I am having trouble somewhere between compressor and DVD studio pro: getting it into dvd studio as 23.98- it just keeps auto converting it and registers in the video asset window at 29.97 in dvd studio, after I have set it to export from compressor at 23.98. I am not sure if this is a compressor problem or dvd studio...

    Film-based movies have a native frame rate of 24fps, and because the mpeg-2 format is able to represent 24fps video internally, many commercial movie DVDs are encoded in this way.
    Compressor can also do this for 24p source video files. For such material, the 23.98 frame rate option (in the Video Format tab) compresses each source frame one-for-one, without compressing repeated frames or fields in order to achieve a 29.97 fps display rate. This results in higher quality at a lower compressed bit rate than would be possible if the 24p material were converted to 29.97fps prior to transcoding. Compressor also sets internal MPEG-2 frame flags correctly, so DVD players will properly apply the 3:2 pull-down process for display on 29.97fps interlaced NTSC TV sets

    I have always appreciated hometheaterhifi.com and the way they explain things. Based on their good articles, I was able to put together a killer home theater for a reasonable price. So thanks for the link. I have an understanding on what they are explaining, however, my question has to do with comparing my results with professional outputs.
    When I choose what format I want my DVD to be made in, I choose progressive scan and remove any trace of interlace options. So there should be no need for 29.97 anywhere. Even the DVDSP manual says I have a choice between 23.98 and 29.97 display in NTSC. (ie DVD Studio Pro User Manual > Preparing Assets > Preparing Video Sources)
    I would look at a professional movie on my progressive scan DVD player (or my iMac DVD player), wait for a good slow pan, then pause. Clicking one frame at a time, I see the following frame progression...
    1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10, etc
    My original video footage will do the same thing. A smooth pan with all frames lining up properly. However, post DVDSP, I get the following results on my progressive scan DVD creation...
    1,2,3,4,4,5,6,7,8,8,9,10, etc This is what the articles calls "judder".
    Now, if DVDSP is indeed a PRO application, I should be able to get the same results as the professionals do with their DVDs, correct? Why can't I get a 24fps output like they can with their movies? Why am I forced to accept a duplication of every 4th or 5th frame that jutters up my smooth pans?
    The manual says that if your asset is 23.98, it will be rendered as such on output, but this is not the case. My M2V files will not import at all into DVDSP, and my original footage gets converted to 29.97. So therein lies my angst.
    Mind you, I am not trying to be provocative. My way of getting to know all sides of an issue is to come at it in a debate-style way. I truly want to know and hope to create as professional a product out of DVDSP as I possibly can.

  • Using ffmpeg or x264 to create DNT Blu-ray files

    I am trying to find some way to batch create Blu-ray compliant video files.  My source is 720p59.94 mp4 video-only files.  Ideally, I would like to do this from the command line.  I have tried the following ffmpeg command with a fresh cross-compile:

    I have also tried an x264.exe solution (from 720p - Authoring a professional Blu-ray Disc with x264):

    And neither method results in a file that I can import into Encore CS6 that is detected as DNT.  I saw a post in this forum pointing to this tutorial: Bellune Digital Video Services - Tutorials - Adobe Encore – Using x264 To Encode Video For Blu-ray Disc Authoring.  However, it's saying I need to use x264pro?  What is this?  Shouldn't I be able to achieve the same thing with the open source VideoLAN x264.exe?
    Does anyone have a method of doing command line processing that works with ffmpeg or VideoLAN's x264.exe to get video files prepared for Encore?

    Hiya.
    In the first place, I would personally avoid batching - you save no time at all as each file still has to be checked as 99% of all DVD & BluRay problems are caused by bad assets.
    ffmpeg I would also avoid as it is a collection of hacked, reverse engineered & freeware codecs, and neither MPEG-2 (DVD & BD) or AVC are free codecs.
    x264 Pro works beautifully out of Premiere Pro though, and there is a plugin version designed to set the correct flags (264 for BluRay & 264 for web are very different animals indeed) at only $300 and that is cheap given TotalCode went for £15,000 when sold!! All authors should own this. There is simply no good reason not to, and furthermore the implementation in VideoLAN is designed to be all things, but Blu-Ray has some very specific requirements for 264 files - x264 Pro sets these for you and does it very, very well - do not try to cut corners on asset preparation as this is 99% of the work.
    Next up - I have to ask - what is DNT and what does it have to do with Blu-Ray? I've been making BluRay for a while now & have never heard of it, and cannot see much online except illegal torrents flagged as DNT.

  • Converting ntsc dvd to pal for web

    hi , i am based in uk and I have a dvd that apparently is ntsc as it plays in my dvd player and says ntsc region, it plays on the computer to.
    I want to take small segments from it to convert to web format , add titles etc and upload to youtube.\
    trouble is i cant rip the files to use in final cut pro, tried media streamclip but that produces jerky unusable files with random drop out and colours
    I then thought play it realtime into fcp , it will play going by a firewire into capture and i see it but when capturing it stops every few seconds saying there is dropout I unchecked report on droped frames, and abourt on dropout. and capturing without deck control. i then tried to go through my dv camera but that doesnt see the picture only the sound.
    I thought I could copy the dvd but it wont work either on my dvd recorder or with toast.
    any suggestions how I can do this? does it need converting first if so how?
    I am only using a few minutes of at least 90 minutes of footage .

    NTSC is 720x480, PAL is 720x576. They have different PAR as well.
    If compliance is what you need, then design your menus in Square Pixels at 720 x 540, and resize the image (in PS) to the required TV standard before importing into Encore. 16/9 is worse, as you need to use different designs for each TV standard. There are no short-cuts.

  • Converting NTSC DVD to Blu-ray or PAL DVD

    Why doesn't Encore allow me to change a DVD project to a Blu-ray project with the ability to choose the frame size and rate, or to change an NTSC DVD to a PAL DVD? It looks like the option is there, but they are grayed out.
    I exported my Premier Pro CS3 project for NTSC DVD, PAL DVD and Blu-ray, hoping to simply change to Encore CS3 project type, and then replace the assets with the appropriate file/format exported from Premier.

    Im ready to burn my movie to a dvd and this message appears, "Burning preparation error: Not enough free disk space for encoding the remaining assets." What does that mean or what do i have to do?

    The free space on Your Start-Up (Mac OS) Hard Disk (often named Macintosh HD) is near to full and iDVD and Mac OS needs lot's of space for their temp files. This can not be addressed to other devices - at all. It must be here.
    I never let it go less than 25GB free space.
    To free up space You need to
    • trash files You NEVER need any more
    • copy needed material to an external hard disk
    (If from iMovie - THEN DO NOT - move or alter any folder named
    - iMovie Event's - or -
    - iMovie Project's
    on DeskTop/Finder ! )
    ONLY - within iMovie Application
    ONLY to an external Hard Disk formatted as - Mac OS Extended (hfs) (mine are journaled) and I use FireWire ones as USB/USB2 performs badly - especially when filling up and if HD-Material is used.
    UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - works for most other things BUT NOT FOR VIDEO

  • Preparing Photo Slide Show Assets

    I've done short slide shows in DVDSP 3 and re-sized photo assets from 540 to 480 px to compensate for the square vs. rectangular pixel issue.
    I now need to do a slide show with approx. 100 digital photos, and obviously re-sizing each individually will be a lot of work. Can anyone recommend anything or any method that might be able to batch process the photos?

    there is a Test-run modus.
    If it fails for some reasons, you will get a error message. Then you solve this error and repeat  AJRW or AJAB.

  • Question on fixed asset reports

    Hello all,
    I work in the real estate accounting department of a large retailer. At quarter/year end we are required to prepare a set of workpapers to support the fixed asset ledger and related P&L accounts. Currently, we are using the following reports:
    To support asset account activity:
    S_ALR_87011967 – Asset balances by site
    S_ALR_87012050 – Asset acquisitions
    S_ALR_87012052 – Asset retirements
    S_ALR_87012054 – Intracompany asset transfers
    To support P&L account activity:
    FBL3N – G/L account line items
    The problem we are running into is that, for example, impairment losses are processed by retiring all the assets of the company and reacquiring them at the new fair market value. The net difference is the loss on impairment. Unfortunately, it shows up in our reports as a very large retirement followed by a very large acquisition. These need to be netted together on our schedules for the auditors. The problem right now is that we don’t have a good detail report to find impairment retirements/acquisitions, for when we select “list assets” in the retirements or acquisitions report it gives a hierarchical style report, which is almost impossible to export and process in Excel.
    So, my question is really twofold. Firstly, is it possible to turn off the hierarchical setting of a retirements or acquisition report when “list assets” is selected? Ideally, I'd like to see all the same data on a single row.
    Secondly, my real dream report would be more of a standard general ledger with a beginning balance, activity, and ending balance for the period that I could use for all my balance sheet and P&L accounts. I’ve tried using the FBL3N report for the balance sheet accounts and it works okay, but I haven’t been able to figure out how to get it to show the transaction types from the fixed asset ledger. I read something in another post that talked about using the BWASL field to show the transaction types, but I wasn’t able to locate it in the available fields list. Do I need to do something special when I run the report?

  • Asset Creation in PR and PO and MIGO as a single Line item with "N" qty

    In Purchase requestion ME51N
    Now we are creating "n" number of assets ( All are same item but "s.no" will vary) with "n" number of line item.
    Instead of this I have to enhance to create only one line item( For same item) with "n" quantity.
    for the ASSET account Assignment we have to create Asset(Temp no) for the each item/quantity(if the same item).
    as well as if they are going to create a PO with ref to PR they have to see all the "n" number of asset no.
    In MIGO creation for each asset we have to assign S.No and Asset Tag.
    How enhance the functionality in PR,PO and MIGO as well as in Invoice.
    Is it any User Exit/BADI is available for PR/POand MIGO to show all the "n" number of assets for a single line item.
    Kindly help me to give details to proceed further.

    Hi Sharma,
    What i understand from your question is, you want to create a single line item in PR and PO. But the qty would be > 1.
    Each single qty would have its own asset number in account asssignment tab of item details of PR & PO.
    This is what you are expecting...Right???????????????
    Then this is possible with certain limitations.
    While creating PR, enter only one item with more qty.
    In item details section, in account assignment tab, on top left corner, there will be a button called Multiple account assignments.
    Click on it, then it looks like a table, where you can enter more than one line. (each line will have its own asset no)
    And choose option Distribute on qty basis for field Distribution.
    So that you can enter 1 qty for each line. ( Ex: if you created one line item in the item level with 10 qty, you need to maintain 10 line here, each qith 1 qty and diff asset no).
    The only limitation to this is, the GRN would be treated as non valueted. So when you make GRN there wwould not be any accounting doc. ( means no use of GR/IR clearing account as like normal for POs)
    when you prepare MIRO, all the assets will be capitalised and vendor credited.
    But in case if you receive partial invoice, then you have choose manually in MIRO. which asset is ot be capitalised.
    After entering the PO number in MIRO, there will be one line will be appeared with full qty. in the same line, move till the end of line, there you will have one button called Account assignments.
    Choose and go there, here you can choose which individual asset line to be considired.
    This will resolve your issue.

  • Is it possible to replace all assets in a project?

    I have just finished the first DVD of a series consisting of 26 menus (18 buttons each, except for the main menu which has 25 buttons), 75 playlists, 323 video files, 24 audio files, 33 timelines (up to 45 chapters each). In every case a video file corresponds to just one chapter. Total 3,4 Gb more or less.
    I had a lot of problems (general error, out of memory, sorry an abnormal condition has occurred...) during the DVD build process, and I finally had to start from scratch and create new versions every few steps to get this thing to build. Took a long time as I had to save as, then build to see if it worked, then close the file, then reopen and start a new version, ended up with 27 versions.
    I have to prepare the rest of the DVDs, which will have exactly the same structure, although some of the videos may be slightly different in length (just a few seconds difference).
    Is it possible at all just to rename all the assets to avoid re authoring the whole thing, and then review only the timelines including the different lenghted videos?

    When faced with a similar Project (ended up being a set of 18 DVD-5's with the same structure), I built a test Project to work out the details and finally got everything as I wanted, then burned a DVD RW.
    I took the "test" and built a "template" with all of my Bins/Folders, Menus (knowing that I'd change these, as each DVD would be similar, but unique) and Imported just the Assets that would be common, like the First Play and a lead-in to the Main Menu. This I Saved to a master folder. For each individual DVD, I opened that "template" Project and did a Save_As into the appropriate folder for that piece of the Project, i.e. Barry_DVDs_01. For each of these, I Imported the Assets unique to that phase of the overall Project. Then, it was just a matter of creating the individual Playlists, etc., and linking. I helped myself by doing a Flowchart in Illustrator. For each phase, I swapped out the Menus, and altered the Links to suit. This gave me the full schematic of each sub-Project. I used these for myself in the Linking process, and also used them for the client to sign off on. He knew exactly what was going to be on each DVD in the set, and how the navigation would work. In Illustrator, I kept things in their Layers, so it was easy to make changes for each sub-Project. Any changes after the Flowchart had been approved cost more $. The client knew this and could see exactly what was happening at every step.
    Though it's some additional work, if you have the Project (your "test") finialized, and know that you'll be duplicating it many times, just with different Assets, I'd urge you to adopt something similar. It should not take long to re-create a blank Project with all of the common aspects in it. Use this as a "template," and do a Save_As of it, to begin each phase. It keeps the XML Links that have to be re-done to a minimum, 'cause you're starting with a semi-clean slate for each one.
    As Jbowden points out, just replacing the Assets can lead to problems. I did not even want to go the Replace Assets command route, to keep the Project file from possibly getting corrupted by overwriting the Links, even using the correct, approved process.
    Just make sure to place a copy of your "template" Project well away from the area that your working in on your I/O system. Make it Read Only, for safe-keeping, in case you forget to do the Save_As. I actually made two copies - one onto a DVD just for safety.

    In MIGO transaction , we want to restrict the user on document type i.e. we want that a particular user can  prepare GRN for document type  STO only. He cannot prepare GRN for other document type.
    We checked  SU24->maintain check indicators for transaction codes->enter migo->execute->check indicator.This returned us the authorisation objects present in Migo transaction.We checked the help of all these objects,but none of them we found suitable for above mentioned requirement.We were planning to find out the proper authorisation object to add to Profile generater.

    Have you executed a trace while a functional user executes the transaction code for the specific parameters? (i.e. document type). The trace will then show which objects are being checked; then look at the object documentation in txn Su21 to determine if there are any ways to restrict on the particular value; in some cases, if the authorization group field is being checked, additional configuration is needed in order to implement the security (Su21 will explain in detail for the particular object).

    Dear all expert,
    I'm new to ASO, would like to know if there's a way to do depreciation forcast for fixed asset in Essbase.
    1. Database type is ASO
    2. Assuming user will prepare forecast caplitialization of fixed asset then upload to Essbase
    3. Attribute dimension "Useful life" has been defined and attached to specific "Accounts" dimension for calcluation
    4. Need to calculate the forecast and spread of depreciation for future months
    E.g. Input 32000 USD for a fixed asset cost with 32 months useful life
    -> should calculate 1000 each month for the coming 32 months
    Can any expert suggest how to do this in ASO? meaning only can do calculation in member formula itself, not calculation script.

    I haven't used the feature, but the reference to 'local script_file' in the MaxL railroad diagram for the 'execute calculation' command suggests the location is relative to the client, if the semantics are consistent with the 'export data' command (the options for report scripts there are 'server' or 'local', although according to the railroad diagram there is no non-local alternative in this case!).

    The DBAG also says that the script files should have suffix .csc, while the Tech Ref example has suffix .txt - helpful!! If they were actually meant to sit in the server's db directory, I would be surprised to find the .csc suffix used, since that is also the suffix for aggregation scripts. Although me being surprised doesn't mean much.
