Assets - Best Practices

Dear Asset Gurus,
I know that there are two methods of capitalisation exist in SAP. One is Asset under Construction and other is direct capitalisation.
Please let me know which is widely used. What are all the relative benefits
Thanks
Krishnadas

Hello
If the asset is complete in all respects and which can be directly put into use, then you could capitalise it directly. This is generally a normal and widely happening phenomena.
If the asset needs to be built ,enhanced or awaiting additions or allocations then it would be AUC.
One would adopt both in most cases, but predomionantly, the direct capitalisation is in vogue.
The benefit of direct capitalisation, you could claim depreciation. Whereas in AUC, you cannot claim depreciation until completed and transferred to a final asset.

  • Best Practice for Acquisition of Utility Plant Assets from another utility

    My company is located in the United States and will be taking on an initiative of purchasing the Utility Plant assets from another company.  We are governed by Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Accounting Standards.  In the guidance for the accounting where one utility purchases the assets of another utility, it states that the purchasing company must account for the Utility Plant Assets in FERC Account 102 at a net book value until FERC approval is received on the sale of the other utility.  Depreciation must be calculated based on the Gross Book Value and applied to this same FERC Account.  What must happen in order to track the assets is that the asset's APC Value and the Depreciation Value must transfer from the utility selling the Plant Assets balance sheet to the utility purchasing the Plant Assets balance sheet respectively.
    As an example:
    Utility ABC is selling their plant assets to Utility XYZ.  The NBV of the plant assets is $60,000,000.  It is broken down to Debit $80,000,000 for the APC Value (in FERC account 101 on Utility ABC's balance sheet) and credit $20,000,000 associated to Depreciation Value (in FERC account 108 on Utility ABC's balance sheet).  When the sale is pending FERC approval the NBV is accounted for on Utility XYZ's balance sheet in FERC account 102.  This amount will be processed to the selling Utility on a PO for the purchase.
    I have configured the Fixed Asset module of SAP to account for the APC Value and the Depreciation Value in separate sub accounts of FERC account 102, that are se-up as reconciliation accounts on the G/L, in the account assignment of the respective asset classes.  we track our assets based on asset class that pertain to the FERC Primary Plant Accounts.
    I am trying to load the assets to the Fixed Asset module having the APC Value and the Depreciation Value reported respectively.  If the NBV amount is processed on the PO, what would be the best practice to load the  APC Value and Depreciation Value to the respective assets?
    My first thought would be to process the PO for the NBV of the assets against a generic FERC Account 102, that is not set-up as a reconciliation account.  I would then process an asset transaction using t-code ABSO with transaction type 158 and use the generic FERC account 102 as the Offsetting Account in the entry and using Document Type AA.
    I would like to follow best practice in this scenario.
    You help on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you very much for your response.
    I hope I can provide some clarity on how the accounting needs to be handle per FERC  Regulations.  The G/L balance on the utility that is selling the assets will be in the following accounts (standard accounts across all FERC Regulated Utilities):
    101 - Acquisition Value for the assets
    108 - Accumulated Depreciation Value for the assets
    For an example, there is Debit $60,000,000 in FERC Account 101 and a credit $30,000,000 in FERC Account 108.  When the purchase occurs, the net book value for the asset will be on our G/L in FERC Account 102.  Once we have FERC Approval to acquire the plant assets, we will need to enter the Acquisition Value and associated Accumulated Depreciation onto our G/L to FERC Account 101 and FERC Account 108 respectively with an offset to FERC Account 102.
    The method that I came up with is to purchase the NBV of the assets to a clearing account.  I then set up account assignments that will track the Acquisition Value and respective Accumulated Depreciation for each asset that is being purchased.  I load the respective asset values using t-code AS91 and then make an entry to the 2 respective accounts with the offset against the clearing account using t-code OASV.  Once my company receives FERC approval, I will transfer the asset to new assets that has the account assignments for FERC Account 101 and FERC Account 108 using t-code ABUMN or FB01.

  • Best practice for "Quantity" field in Asset Master

    Hi
    I want to know what is the best practice for "Quantity field" in asset master. It should be made displayed only or required field in Asset Master creation.
    Initially I made this field as required entry. So user entered 1 quantity. At the time of posting F-90, he again entered quantity. So my quantity in asset master got increased. Hence i decided to make that field display only in asset master creation.
    Now i made that field as display only in asset master creation. At the time of posting F-90, that quantity field is not coming only. I check my field status group for posting key as well as GL account. Its optional field. Inspite of that user is able to make entry in F-90. Now quantity field is '0' only in asset master even though there is some value in asset.
    Please help what is the best practice wrt quantity field. Should be open in asset master or it should be display only.

    Hi:
               SAP Standard does not recommend you to update quantity field in asset master data.  Just leave the Qty Field Blank , just mention the Unit of Measure as EA. While you post acquisition through F-90 or MIGO this field will get updated in Asset master data automatically. Hope this will help you.

  • Best practice to back up our most important asset : iPhoto!

    Hi everyone!
    I consider my 30k photos which I've carefully tagged/marked/modified/red eyed/etc as my most important asset. I've spent days and days on iPhoto to eventually build this 50GB library.
    I've bought my 500 GB TC few months ago and now guess what, it's completely full!
    Modifications calculation, deletion and updates of my library are now taking forever. I understand from this board that Time Machine/TC is updating the 50GB as a whole instead of updating only the modifications ... what a nightmare in this almost ideal apple world!
    Any recommendation to share? Any free apps to do this work for me?
    So far my personal brainstorming came to this process:
    1) download "Time Machine Editor"
    2) schedule updates to be daily or weekly
    3) be patient
    Thanks for sharing your best practices!
    dofre

    I would get a program such as SuperDuper ( http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/22126 ) to CLONE your hard drive onto the external (as an image, if you don't have a free partition) and then when your new HD comes back, clone it back.
    SuperDuper is well worth the $20 shareware fee.

  • Looking For Guidance: Best Practices for Source Control of Database Assets

    Database Version: 11.2.0.3
    OS: RHEL 6.2
    Source Control: subversion
    This is a general question aimed at database professionals, however, it is not specific to any oracle version, etc.  Its a leadership question for other Oracle shops regarding source control.
    The current trunk, in my client's source control, is the implementation of a previous employee who used ER Studio.  After walking the batch scripts and subordinate files , it was determined that there would be no formal or elegant way to recreate the current version of the database from our source control - the engineers who have contributed to these assets are no longer employed or available for consulting.  The batch scripts are stale, if you will.
    To clean this up and to leverage best practices, I need some guidance on whether or not to baseline the current repository and how to move forward with additions of assets; tables, procs, pkgs, etc.  I'm really interested in how larger oracle shops organize their repository - what directories do you use, how are they labeled...are they labeled with respect to version?
    Assumptions:
    1. repository (database assets only) needs to be baselined (?)
    2. I have approval to change this database directory under the trunk to support best practices and get the client steered straight in terms of recovery and
    Knowns:
    1. the current application version in the database is 5.11.0 (that's my client's application version)
    2. this is for one schema/user of a database (other schemas under the database belong to different trunks)
    This is the layout that we currently have and for the privacy of the
    client I've made this rather generic.  I'd love to have a fresh
    start...how do I go about doing that...initially, I like using
    SqlDeveloper's ability to create sql scripts from a connected target.

    HiWe are using Data ONTAP 8.2.3p3 on our FAS8020 in 7-mode and we have 2 aggregates, a SATA and SAS aggregate. I want to decommission the SATA aggregate as I want to move that tray to another site. If I have a flexvol containing 3 qtrees CIFS shares can I use data motion (vol copy) to move the flex vol on the same controller but to a different aggregate without major downtime? I know this article is old and it says here that CIFS are not supported however I am reading mix message that on the version of data ONTAP we are now on does support CIFS and data motion however there will be a small downtime with the CIFS share terminating. Is this correct? Thanks

  • Best Practices for Unlinked Assets in Custom Catalogs

    Hello,
    Is it a best practice to have unlinked categories, products, skus in the product catalog?
    How do folks typically deal with assets that are no longer active?
    thanks!
    J

    It is better to have one dummy category to assign all these unlinked assets, and you have to make sure this category should restricted from search engine and it should not display in b2c site. its just a temparay category which will have all the unliked assets under that category.
    if you want to show a particular product in b2c site in near future, then you have assign that product to respective category and you can delete that product relationship from this dummy category.

  • Home Movie Cataloging - BEST PRACTICES

    I have about 200 hours of old home movies on VHS which I am in the process of adding to my iMac. I am wondering about 'best practices' on how much video can be stored inside of iMovie '08, when how much video becomes too much inside of the program, etc.
    In a perfect world, I'd like to simply import all of my home videos into iMovie, leave them in the 'library' section, and make 2-5 minute long clips in the 'projects' section for sharing with family members, but never deleting anything from the 'library'. Is this a good way to store original data? Would it be smarter to export all of the original video content to .DV files or something like that for space saving, etc?
    Can I use iMovie to store and catalog all of my old home movies in the same way I use iPhoto to store ALL of my photos, and iTunes to store ALL of my music/hollywood-movies, etc?

    We-ell, since no-one else has replied:
    1 hour of DV (digital video in the file system which iMovie uses) needs 13GB of hard disc space.
    You have 200 hours of video. 200 x 13 = 2,600 gigabytes. Two point six terabytes. If you put all that on one-and-a-bit 2TB hard discs, and a hard disc fails - oops! - where's your backup? ..Ah, on another one-and-a-bit 2TB hard discs ..or, preferably, spread over several hard discs, so that if one fails you haven't lost everything!
    iMovie - the program - can handle video stored on external discs. But are you willing to pay the price for those discs? If so; fine! Digitise all your VHS and store it on computer discs (prices come down month by month).
    Yes, you can "mix'n'match" clips between different projects, making all sorts of "mash-ups" or new videos from all the assorted video clips. But you'll need more hard disc space for the editing, too. You could use your iMac's internal hard disc for that ..or use one of the external discs for doing the editing on. That's how professionals edit: all the video "assets" on external discs, and edit onto another disc. That's what I do with my big floorstander PowerMac, or whatever those big cheesegraters were called..
    So the idea's fine, as long as you have all the external storage you'd need, plus the backup in case one of those discs fails, and all the time and patience to digitise 200 hours of VHS.
    Note that importing from VHS will import material as one long, continuous take - there'll be no automatic scene breaks between different shots - so you'll have to spend many hours chopping up the material into different clips after importing it.
    Best way to index that? Dunno; there have been several programs which supposedly do the job for you (..I can't remember their names; I've tried a few: find them by Googling..) but they've been more trouble - and taken up more disc space - than I've been prepared to bother with. I'd jot down the different clips as you create them, either by jotting in TextEdit (simplest) or in a database or spreadsheet program such as Excel or Numbers or similar ..or even in a notebook.
    Jot down the type of footage (e.g; 16th Birthday party), name of clip (e.g; 016 party), duration (e.g; 06:20 mins and seconds) and anything else you might need to identify each clip.
    Best of luck!

  • Best practice for Spark repeating background image in a SkinnableContainer?

    In my old Flex 3.5 code I would accomplish this by dropping an Image into a Canvas and hitting the Canvas with some css style stuff to get the repeat.  The Image tag had a source property that would take a web address so I could dynamically grab different images from the web based on some conditions.  Little bit more trouble with Flex 4.5 and Spark but I'm trying to get there.
    Here Adobe docs explain how to *embed* a background image:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/flex/using/WS422719A4-7849-4921-AF39-57FF567B483B.html#WS063B0 491-B7AB-4b00-A39F-E44310BCB0E0
    They use a BitmapFill object in the skin.
    <!-- background fill -->
        <s:Rect id="background" left="3" top="3" right="3" bottom="3" alpha=".25">
            <s:fill>
                <s:BitmapFill source="@Embed(source='../../assets/myImage.jpg')"/>
            </s:fill>
        </s:Rect>
    Problem is I need to do this without embedding the image.  In my old code I grabbed the image from web (set source property on Image tag to web address).  What's the best practice for achieving this with a skinnable container?  The BitmapFill object used above won't take a web address for a source.
    Thanks in advance.

    Use BitmapImage with a fillMode of repeat:
    <s:BitmapImage source="http://www.google.com/intl/en_com/images/srpr/logo2w.png" width="100%" height="100%" scaleMode="stretch" fillMode="repeat" />

    Hi,
    You have a good start.  What you need to do is 1.) Find out what the requirements are -- what does your user want.... if this is a fact finding mission (e.g., they want to see what's in the system) then your requirement becomes load the data in R/3, so figure out what they configured in PM and use those definitions as your requirements.   2.) Use those requirements to find data in the fields listed in the MultiProvider, InfoCubes, or DataStore Objects sections in your first link ... in other words, now that you know what data to look for, look for it in the Data Targets (MP's, Cubes and DSO's).  If you find some of the data you want, then trace back the infosources and determine what datasources in R/3 load the data you are looking for.  After all that, check those datasources for any additional fields you may need and add them in.
    So, if your company doesn't maintain equipment costs or maintenance costs for equipment, then you don't have to worry about 0PM_MP04.  Use this type of logic to whittle down to what your really need and want, then activate those object only.
    Good Luck,
    Brian

  • What is the best practice for full browser video to achieve the highest quality?

    I'd like to get your thoughts on the best way to deliver full-browser (scale to the size of the browser window) video. I'm skilled in the creation of the content but learning to make the most out of Flash CS5 and would love to hear what you would suggest.
    Most of the tutorials I can find on full browser/scalable video are for earlier versions of Flash; what is the best practice today? Best resolution/format for the video?
    If there is an Adobe guide to this I'm happy to eat humble pie if someone can redirect me to it; I'm using CS5 Production Premium.
    I like the full screen video effect they have on the "Sounds of pertussis" web-site; this is exactly what I'm trying to create but I'm not sure what is the best way to approach it - any hints/tips you can offer would be great?
    Thanks in advance!

    Use the little squares over your video to mask the quality. Sounds of Pertussis is not full screen video, but rather full stage. Which is easier to work with since all the controls and other assets stay on screen. You set up your html file to allow full screen. Then bring in your video (netstream or flvPlayback component) and scale that to the full size of your stage  (since in this case it's basically the background) . I made a quickie demo here. (The video is from a cheapo SD consumer camera, so pretty poor quality to start.)
    In AS3 is would look something like
    import flash.display.Loader;
    import flash.net.URLRequest;
    import flash.display.Bitmap;
    import flash.display.BitmapData;
    import flash.ui.Mouse;
    import flash.events.Event;
    import flash.events.MouseEvent;
    import flash.display.StageDisplayState;
    stage.align = StageAlign.TOP_LEFT;
    stage.scaleMode = StageScaleMode.NO_SCALE;
    // determine current stage size
    var sw:int = int(stage.stageWidth);
    var sh:int = int(stage.stageHeight);
    // load video
    var nc:NetConnection = new NetConnection();
    nc.connect(null);
    var ns:NetStream = new NetStream(nc);
    var vid:Video = new Video(656, 480); // size off video
    this.addChildAt(vid, 0);
    vid.attachNetStream(ns);
    //path to your video_file
    ns.play("content/GS.f4v");
    var netClient:Object = new Object();
    ns.client = netClient;
    // add listener for resizing of the stage so we can scale our assets
    stage.addEventListener(Event.RESIZE, resizeHandler);
    stage.dispatchEvent(new Event(Event.RESIZE));
    function resizeHandler(e:Event = null):void
    // determine current stage size
        var sw:int = stage.stageWidth;
        var sh:int = stage.stageHeight;
    // scale video size depending on stage size
        vid.width = sw;
        vid.height = sh;
    // Don't scale video smaller than certain size
        if (vid.height < 480)
        vid.height = 480;
        if (vid.width < 656)
        vid.width = 656;
    // choose the smaller scale property (x or y) and match the other to it so the size is proportional;
        (vid.scaleX > vid.scaleY) ? vid.scaleY = vid.scaleX : vid.scaleX = vid.scaleY;
    // add event listener for full screen button
    fullScreenStage_mc.buttonMode = true;
    fullScreenStage_mc.mouseChildren = false;
    fullScreenStage_mc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, goFullStage, false, 0, true);
    function goFullStage(event:MouseEvent):void
        //vid.fullScreenTakeOver = false; // keeps flvPlayer component from becoming full screen if you use it instead
