Assign apps to Spaces (as previously with spaces)

Hello there,
With Spaces I was able to assign application to specific spaces, now with Lion I can't seem to save the state, where applications should open.
For example I like to have iTunes on Desktop 2, so that I have a clean desktop for work on Desktop 1, as soon as I restar tthe computer iTunes and everything that was previously opens on different Desktops (spaces), opens on desktop 1 and I have to sort everything again. I miss that feature to assign applications to specific spaces. Does anyone know a way to do this in Lion, or a tool to download?
Thanks very much for your input,
Joe

I did not do a clean install; ML was installed over Snow Leopard.
I have found that the only way application assignments to specific Spaces will "stick" is if you check the box that says "Reopen windows when logging back in" at Restart.  Even then, getting assignments made can be a process of fiddling, with restarts necessary at times before you can assign them.  It is much harder than in Snow Leopard, and of more limited use (since you have to allow your system to reopen applications upon restart and not quit applications before shutting down).
I participated in another thread on this subject, where I gave a few more details.

*2. When in the Spaces preferences, you used to be able to click on an application in the list and DRAG it to the space you want to assign it to.* For example:
    a. Open Spaces preferences
    b. Click on the + (plus) button to add an application to the Application Assignments list, let's say Address Book
    c. Once the Application is in the list, click and drag it to the space to assign it to, say, Space 3.
    d. The application SHOULD now be assigned to that space.
Since 10.5.3, I'm not able to drag any application to the space to assign it. It doesn't change the space assignment. I can still select the space in the dropdown.
Can anyone else confirm either of these (either the Warnings in the console or the behavior I'm seeing)? Neither my Mac Pro or MacBook work correctly.
    -Kevin

I cannot replicate your problems, so I would assume either you upgraded over an already dysfucntional system or your update was corrupted in some way.
To start I would suggest you download the 10.5.3 Combo Updater and reinstall it after you do the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If this does not resolve the problem, then you will need to reinstall OS X. Assuming the disk is OK you can do that as follows (you will need about 10 GBs of free space or more:)
How to Perform an Archive and Install
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

    slaglejrp,
perhaps it would be less expensive to just install a new disk with a larger capacity on your current MacBook Pro, rather than plan on buying a new Mac with a larger disk? Once your current disk has been cloned to the new disk, and the new disk has been installed into your MacBook Pro, that would allow you to keep Photoshop 5 on your current MacBook Pro.

Somehow, I created 2 Appe ID's...1 from home and 1 from work.  I purchased additional space on iCloud with one ID, but I need to transfer it to the other.

Having read some other posts I think I have answered my question. If I was somehow able to terminate my old (unwanted) account and Apple ID I would no longer be able to access the material I bought with that ID-  so I'm stuck. I have to learn how to manage that situation.
This is unfortunate for Apple consumers. Life is complicated for families these days and this "rule" although it is in place to prevent cheating and fraud makes things unnnecessarily difficult for me and my family as in my niaevity (sic) with the online world I bumbled into this situation. Not everyone is out to rip off Apple - one of the worlds richest corporations- or the entertainers who market their work through iTunes.I would just like to be able to enjoy the entertainment I pay for where and when I like to on whichever computer is available to me. And I'm not terribly computer literate.
It would have been nice to have had the opportunity to speak just once to a real person in the employ of Apple to explain my situation to them.

  • Troubles with Spaces & Adobe CS

I love spaces but have been having some issues with the CS. All applications work correctly with spaces. If an application is open in it's set window and I am working in another, a command-tab will not only switch applications but the spaces as well. Same thing goes when you open an application while in a space not assigned to the app, you will be transfered to the correct one and it will open.
I am assuming this is how it is suppose to work.
However, with the Adobe CS, it doesn't work at all. I can open them in any space despite having assigned a specific one in the system preferences. It's getting pretty old and I can't figure out why this is happening.
Any idea on how I can fix it?
    Thanks.

ronmon wrote:Although you are much better off not using invalid characters if you can help it.
The only invalid characters for filenames in UNIX are forward slashes and nulls. [don't quote me on that, my point is that spaces are valid characters and programs should handle them properly]
ConnorBehan wrote:It seems no one asked what shell you are using.

@SudoGrep: you say you're using tab completion to get that line. Does it work by just manually typing a backslash space there?

  • When they say that iCloud doesnt count Apps, books, music, and photos as space...

Does this mean that all my apps dont count as actual storage space? let's say that I have Infinity Blade (take up quite a few mbs) would iCloud count it as a file that takes up part of the free 5gbs or not?

I have searched- but to no avail.  Not sure what to do.  and I don't have any other "accounts" to open - such as my old name.
    Anyone have any ideas?

    So many issues here!
    1. You should never ever change the name of your Home icon - that's the short name of your User Account which is a total no-no. (Why don't Apple issue a grim warning when users try to do this?). Check out these old discussion threads which may contain something of interest or help :
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/7069252#7069252
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/4675452#4675452
    2. This needs recovering from - see the first discussion thread (above). Your User Account is being treated as a new one, but your old data should be there - read the discussion
    3. You must have been close to a full HD even before this happened? This is inadvisable - you should always have around 10% of your HD free, or at the very least, OS X will start to slow down dramatically.
Hopefully the first thread above will point you to a fix of your problem.

Check for 'others' in iTunes against your iPhone.
Restore from a previous backup to reclaim some of it.
Still want more, Restore in iTunes, setup as New.

  • Problems with Spaces and System Preferences

Hello all. I previously had setup my spaces so that when I opened certain apps, they would open in specific spaces (ex. Safari opened in upper left space, system preferences opened in lower right space etc.). I had spaces setup so that there were 9 spaces. Now somehow my spaces got reset so that I have only 4. Whenever I open system preferences, or even open spaces preferences to change it, it opens, but does not appear, and when I hit the spaces button, there it is, overlapping my spaces, but I cannot click on it to change the settings, only choose a space to go to.
Heres what it looks like when i hit the spaces button:
    http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/5122/picture1bw3.png

Hey guys i found a fix to this but its basically using System preferences blind, and toggling on and off the radio buttons for Expose and Spaces.
So to really understand my jumble of words to make you understand my weird train of thought. Its The Master & the Grasshopper Lesson on _'Believing without Seeing.'_
Young Apple Seed (aka Grasshopper), Just because one can not see what one is doing, does not mean one is doing nothing. This just means that the Mime is miming a mime action to a blind person.
So if you wish to not be the blind mad and the mime, do as it is written, and as you think. For one who goes down a path they choose they will sure be the Mime. And if you are, then you need an Mime EGO check.
_TO GET WHAT YOU CAN'T SEE_
    1. If you don't already have SP (System Preferences) running then you will need to start the Application named SP.
    2. When in SP, click on View | *Expose and Spaces*
+(If your here and saying how the bleep do I do this step. Then you need to Bleepity make sure that right next to the Apple Icon in the top left corner reads+ *System Preferences*, +Mr/Mrs/Ms Mime.)+
    3. Press Tab +(ONE TIME)+
    4. Press *Right --> Arrow* +(ONE TIME)+
    *5. Press ⌘L +(ONE TIME)+
    *6. Press ⌘[ +(ONE TIME)+
    7. Press Tab
    8. Press Tab
    9. Press *Space Bar*
+(Now if you were doing each step while reading it on the screen then right after you did that last step like magic it appears.)+ The space bar toggled Enable or Disable Check box.
    * These steps really should not be here but I noticed a bug that would make my steps not work correctly if these were not done. Usually when you press tab once in a 2 part option menu for SP its tabbed. And usually when you press the arrow key to go to the next tab, usually the focus is still on the tab for the next tab. But it doesn't and that isn't only on my system, its on many others i tried it on. So you Bug mashers or fixers this has been duped on several other systems that range from non-Intel, PowerMac, PowerPC, iMac, even non apple macs. but focus disappears and even if you pressed tab or the arrow keys nothing would happen and trust me you would be doing my steps over and over and then post something either on my profile that i'm a bleepity bleep bleep or something positive. But i'd like the positive comments, but hey if you want to leave me bleepity bleep bleep bleep bleep bleeps? Then i have one thing to say to you "BLEEP you!!"

  • Word doesnt play nicely with spaces

When i open up microsoft word i have it set up to open in my second space. the problem is, when i switch back and forth from that space to my first one or another space, and then back, parts of word get left behind. For instance, all the controls in the toolbox are just floating in another space, or my cursor is just floating in a random window. are people aware of this, is there anything i can do to fix it?

You said it in your Subject title - MS Office is not completely compatible with Spaces. Menus sometimes appear in Spaces other than where they were assigned. But that happens on my machine with other applications, like switching from a Space running Safari to an empty Space. Using the Control-arrow or Control-keypad-number to change Spaces may help.
It may be fixed in the next release of Office for the Mac, which occurs about every 4 years (Office 2000 to Office 2004 to Office 2008) so look for a fix in 2012.

  • DW CS5.5 in OSX Lion - anyone seeing problems with Spaces?

DW seems to have problems with Spaces in OSX Lion.Switching into DW from other spaces is not 'clean'. When DW comes up, sometimes the Code/Design is blank white, and windows within the workspace don't show their headers. Clicking on Code/Design redraws that window, but the only thing that seems to recover the window headings is switching to and then back from another app in the same Space.
Seems like screen redrawing triggered by switching apps within the same Space is a little different than that triggered by switching apps across Spaces.
    Anyone else seeing this?

I did report it as a bug, using the link kindly provided by you and Shocker.
The two Macs I've tried this on now are a Mac Pro and an iMac, so there's no Automatic Graphics Switching option to enable/disable.
I was only able to check this out on the iMac late last night.
    Hardware synopsis:
    Mac Pro Early 2009
    Processor  2 x 2.93 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory  16 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7 (11A511)
The iMac isn't available to me at the moment, I'll have to fill in missing details later (can't remember the exact graphics card info):
DW is CS5, not CS5.5, was also installed well ahead of the Lion upgrade
Computer is iMac instead of Mac Pro, about 1.5 years old
    Quad-Core i7
    4GB memory
    Mac OS X Lion 10.7
I used the same procedure upgrading to Lion on the iMac...
Ran Cocktail 'Pilot' to clean up the system prior to install (runs Daily, Weekly, Monthly maintenance scripts, clears System, User, and Internet caches, repairs disk permissions on "Macintosh HD", clears log files)
OS10.7 was purchased through the Mac App Store and installed.
    JRE installed.
DW on the iMac exhibited the same problem as on the Mac Pro.
    To reproduce:
Start DW, open a file for editing
Start any other app in the same Space
Open a new Space, open any other app there.
Test switching between DW and other apps in the same Space compared with switching between DW and other apps in different Spaces.
Consistently, when I switch between DW and other apps in the same Space, DW's windows/panels redraw properly,
and when I switch between DW and other apps in different Spaces, DW's windows/panels don't redraw properly.

After downloading almost all of it, I get an error that there is no enough space. Why doesn't the store check to see if I have enough free space before proceeeding with the order?
How do I get a refund?

Well, with apps genneraly you do get told ahead of time. I'm not sure of the current algorithm with movies though.
Why not just clear up some space? You can check your usage in your settings btw.

  • Cannot open files and dirs with spaces from most qt-based applications

    Hello,
I noticed that I can't open any file or folder that have spaces in the path because an error pop-up appears stating that there is no such file or directory, the error includes the full path but it's "urlencoded" in the sense that spaces are replaced with "%20".
I experienced this behavior in most qt apps: clementine (open containing folder of a song), retroshare, calibre (try to open a book or its folder). Everything works with gtk: pcmanfm, firefox.
I tried changing the default file manager with xdg-mime (switched from pcmanfm to qtfm) but the result's the same. It really seems that qt is trying to open a urlencoded path and xdg-open produces the error.
Any idea? qtfm works, even if it is a qt application, maybe because it's qt5?

I've used, for this, 3 languages on local-gen
    on my config
    pt-br
    pt-br
    en-us
On my tries, the spaces, on real, were "language symbols" thar are incompreensible to my current language, and, turns into inacessible
