Assign RDS CAL to specific device.

Is it possible to assign a RDS CAL to a specific device? In other words manually doing it instead for letting the license server do it, or even if the license server does it, i tell it which devices I want to get the CALs. I yes, how. This is a Win Server
2008 R2 standard version. TIA.

Hi,
Unfortunately there is no option to pre-assign a RDS CAL to a specific device.  The RDS Per Device CAL is assigned to the device when a user successfully connects to a RDSH server at least twice.

  • Windows 2012 RDS CALs - OLP NL downgrade to Windows 2003 TS CALs

    Hi,
Hope someone can shed some light on this inquiry
I plans to purchase the following:
2x Windows 2014 SQL STD 2 Core License OLP NL
30 Windows 2012 RDS CALs (User or Device) OLP NL
               Breakdown example
                Site A = 10
                Site B = 5
                Site C = 15
Existing servers are Windows 2003 R2 STD running Terminal Services
Tried setting up a Windows 2003 R2 TS Server and install TS Roles & Licensing Manager
    Questions.
     1. When I tried to add Windows 2003 TS CALs - OLP NL, the activation screen requires to enter the Authorization & License numbers.
Can I use the Authorization and License number of the newly purchased Windows 2012 RDS CALs on the Windows 2003 TS Server?
     2. Should I get a separate Authorization & License number per site? (In the example above 3x Authorization & License numbers). Or can we use a single Authorization & License number for all sites? Each site is independent from each
    other.
     3. As I understand, SQL 2014 can be downgraded to any prior previous version at the same editions. (as far as SQL 2000, provided he has the installer), If client has an existing SQL 2003 STD activated already, does he need to change the license key?
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Hi Paul,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server forum.
Yes, you can use newly purchased server 2012 RDS CAL on server 2003 terminal server.

As per my research, I think you don’t have to change the old license key if client already have the key. And in regards to SQL server you can have a look over beneath article.

  • RDS Per Device CAL - how the device is identificated?

    Hi,
How the client device is identificated for assigning the RDS Per Device CAL to it?
What happens if I reinstall my client computer OS? Change its network name? Add or remove some hardware (GPU card, memory, HDD, etc.)?
Will it be identificated as a new or old device? Will it get new or old RDS Per Device CAL?
    Thanks!

Adding or removing hardware generally wont change the RDS CAL usage, it will still be assigned to the machine, a computer domain rejoin may well result in an additional CAL being used, a rebuild will result in 2 CALs being used until the first one expires.
You always have the option to "revoke" a CAL but you can only do a limited number each month (I think).

  • How to assign RDS 2012 R2 temporary license per RDS user CAL

we have setup  two RDS servers of 2012 r2 runnning with both RDSH roles, RDP-1 is the license server and in RDP-2 its pointed to RDP-1 to take license and licensing mode is set as per user. users are getting license in per user mode of 60 days validity.
Question is how to get temporary license assigned for users in per user mode, this is requirement for testing the license in our company as it is setup just now.So i have removed the pointing of license server in RDP-2 using Group policy, but still cannot
see a temporary license in RDP-1 -> License Manager.
Pls help to solve this issue.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
As per my research by default there are 2 remote session available for administrative purpose only. Once you want more than 2 remote session for user to connect we need to purchase RDS CAL (as you know), activate the license server and then configure the purchased
RDS CAL with the help of MS Clearing house. There is no way to assign the temporary license, but when you install the RD License server, activate it and once user will get login by default will get user temporary license for specified days such as 60. Within
that time you need to purchase the CAL and complete rest process. You can get more information from following article.

  • Using Windows Server 2012 per-User RDS CAL on Server 2008 R2 Session Host

I have a Remote Desktop Licensing Server setup on my domain controller running Windows Server 2012 R2. I have installed a
’Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Services per-User CAL’ there and activated the licensing server already.
Currently I use ONLY Windows Server 2008 R2 machines as RDS Session Hosts (in the future I plan to transition them to 2012 R2, hence the CAL I bought is
    already in the newest version).
I have already configured my WS 2008 RDS Session Hosts: set
Per-User licensing mode and specified license server address. The connectivity between my Session Host(s) and my License Server seems to be ok as the
Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration window on the Session Host correctly lists the 2012 per-user
license (CAL installed on server) from the license server.
On the License Server I can also see event logs entries (in
Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-Licensing/Admin), indicating that the user has been issued a license.
The issue I am having is that the license being issued is
2008 Per User CAL license (Build-in OverUsed - temporary) and not the 2012 Per User CAL license which is the only license installed on the server. According to the RDS CAL interoperability matrix at
social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/14988.rds-and-ts-cal-interoperability-matrix.aspx, I was expecting the 2012 license to be backward-compatible with 2008 client (and that
in the absence of legacy licenses, the (only) 2012 license would be used for all clients connecting to the licensing server)
Before I bought my license, I found this document:
    download.microsoft.com/download/3/D/4/3D42BDC2-6725-4B29-B75A-A5B04179958B/WindowsServerRDS_VLBrief.pdf
which says that - "newer version RDS CALs can be used with an older version of the server software" (In section FAQ, Q4), which means to me that
the 2012 license would work as-is for the 2008 Server and gives me flexibility when upgrading to the new server version.
How can I make this CAL work in my environment?
    Note:
    I have already explicitly disabled
Prevent license upgrade Group Policy setting which I assumed would fix the issue but nothing has changed.
Then I have enabled License server security group Group Polity setting
and added computers from my domain to RDS Endpoint Servers AD group. I have also created new AD group called
Terminal Server Computers and added the computer accounts there, but it changes
    nothing. Reference - technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee791761.aspx , technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc725704.aspx and blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2009/09/17/control-the-issuance-of-rds-cals.aspx.
I found one potential ‘workaround’ which involved manually downgrading my CAL license by calling
Microsoft Clearinghouse. I am very reluctant do to so because, as I upgrade parts of my infrastructure to Server 2012, I’d need to then ask Microsoft to manually upgrade a part of my license back as well.
Am I missing something? What should I do to get my 2012 CAL to be issued to 2008 R2 server

Hi, I have tried several other possibilities.
I change expire date for my temporary assigned license (2008 CAL overused). It can be done, by changing Active Directory user properties – msTSExpireDate. When I restart my Session Host server and logged again, my license was renewed
for next 60 days (event ID - 4145).
I also delete information about license for this user (clear msTSExpireDate and msTSLicenseVersion). And the license was successfully removed from License Manager. After another SH restart it gets the same – 2008 overused – license
(event ID 4143 - license server has successfully issued …)
I now, that changing info in AD attributes is a little trick, and this is not a real value - only a reference, but it was useful to delete or change expiration date of license. But it didn’t change type of license as I expected.

I have found your post with information:
If you have a Server 2012 RD Licensing server you may install your 2012 RDS CALs on it (no downgrade necessary) and then set your Server 2008 R2 RDSH to

  • Do RDS CALs Have a Tombstone Life?

Is a 2008 R2 RDS CAL an actual AD object? This question is penultimate to: do the tombstone policies of AD objects apply to RDS CALs?

    Hi,
Permanent RDS Per Device CALs expire between 52 to 89 (exact number is random) days after issuance, temporary RDS Per Device CALs expire in 90 days, and Per User RDS CALs expire after 60 days.
You may open RD Licensing Manager (licmgr.exe) to see what Per Device RDS CALs have been issued, when they expire, etc.  For Per User RDS CALs you must first create a Per User usage report, then right-click on this report, save it as csv file,
and then view the csv in Notepad, Excel, etc.

  • Why are there so many different prices for RDS CALS

I'm needing Windows Server 2008 r2 with 10 server CALS and 10 RDS CALS. When I search for a source online I see 10 RDS CALS selling as low as 220.00 and as high as 500.00.
My question is: How do I know the lower priced item is the same as the higher prices item?

    Hi,
Microsoft has multiple licensing programs, each targeted at specific types of organizations, with different qualifications to join and different pricing.  For example, there is a licensing program for non-profits that allows
them to purchase licenses at a greatly reduced price.  The page below provides information on the different licensing programs:

  • (EA4500). With static IP assigned, how to tell of devices are connected?

I've assigned static IPs to all of my network devices.
Logging onto the router, there does not appear to be any way to tell whether any device is connected or not.  Is this normal?

Static IP assignments are only done on the device itself. You switch the device from DHCP to static IP and configure everything on the device itself.
DHCP reservation is not a static IP assignment. It's telling the DHCP server to assign a specific IP address to a specific device. The device still runs on DHCP and cannot tell whether the IP address received is the IP address reserved or not. That's something entirely different and not to be confused with static IP.
Linksys routers never showed a complete list of connected devices. As mentioned before, you can only see the list of wireless devices associated. You won't see wired devices with static IP nor DHCP reservation and even the DHCP client list is often incomplete...

  • RDS Cal Licenses not recognized

Available and Issued should add up to 10, but is instead showing 0 available, 0 issued, and using “Built-in-overused” instead of the legitimate CAL.
This causes an error in the licensing diagnose:
Screenshot will not post until "verify your account" but no instructions about how to accomplish this.

Dharmesh, this is a single machine for a Proof Of Concept application, therefore the licensing server and RD session host are on the same machine.  Though it is part of the domain, the Group Policy for RD Licensing is in
the default “not defined” state.  This should not be an issue, as quoted from your link (emphasis added):
“If you disable or do not configure the License server security group policy setting, the Terminal Server Computers group is not deleted or changed and
the license server issues an RDS CAL (if an appropriate RDS CAL is available)
to any RD Session Host server that requests one.”
With no changes to GPO defaults, the licensing server should issue CALs to itself without issue.  In fact, CAL’s are being issued, they’re just being issued from the built-in overuse account instead of from the purchased
    license.
TP, this is 2012 R2.   licmgr.exe displays the following:
License Version and Type / License Program / Total Licenses / Available / Issued / Expiry Date / Keypack ID
    Windows 200 Server – Built-in TS Per Device CAL / Built-in / Unlimited / Unlimited / 0 / Never / 2
    Windows Server 2012 – Installed RDS Per User Cal / Built-in OverUsed / 0 / 0 / 8 / Never / 4
    Windows Server 2012 – Installed RDS Per User Cal / Retail Purchase / 10 / 0 / 0 / Never / 3
This agrees with the raw numbers (10/8) listed in the results of the CAL usage report below, the report isn’t too helpful as it doesn’t note which CAL is being used (as above), which is the problem:

  • Windows Cannot Access Specific Device, Path or File While Using Adobe Reader XI, Version 11.0.06

    Hello,
Recently, I have been experiencing a minor problem with the Adobe Reader XI Program loaded on my computer.  When clicking the data fields on PDF versions of various forms to enter numerical or text information, a dialogue box with a small white X in a red circle on the left side of the title bar pops open and is titled:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ink\TabTip.exe
There is another white X in a red circle symbol displayed in the message field of the dialogue box along with the following message:
Windows cannot access the specific device, path, or file.  You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.
There is also an “OK” Button displayed on the right side of the lower margin of the dialogue box.
Although the dialogue box is repeatedly displayed whenever I click on a data field, the program still allows me to enter and save the numerical and text information that is entered in each data field.
My computer is a Hewlett-Packard Envy 23-d034 TouchSmart All-In-One Desktop Personal Computer with a Windows 8.1 Operating System that has all applicable Important and Recommended Windows Updates installed.  The Adobe Reader XI Program is the latest version, Version 11.0.06, and I have confirmed that there are no updates for the program at this time.
Could you suggest any recommended actions to correct this problem with the Adobe Reader XI Program?

unfortunately no. i have a problem in my computer that doesn't let me do that.
this is  th entire message though and it appears on the background of the program trying to load. all you can see is the frame of Rreader, and immediatly after that it shuts down

  • Windows Server 2012 RDS CALS on Windows Server 2008 R2 Licensing Server

    Hi,
at the moment we are installing the first couple of Windows Server 2012 in our infrastructure.
Some of them have installed RDS.
Now we are wondering whether it is possible to use our existing Windows Server 2008 R2 licensing server for serving the licenses we have (yes we to have new Windows Server 2012 RDS CALS) or whether we have to install a new host based on Windows Server 2012.
We tried to add the new license to the 2008 R2 licensing server, but it is not possible. The licensing manager's error message: "The license code contains invalid characters or not enough characters."
    Is there any other way?
    Thanks and regards
    Matthias

    Hi matt_will_fix_it,
    How about Windows 2012 R2 ?
Will a Windows 2012 RD Licensing server provide licences to a Windows 2012 R2 server?
I have not tested it, but it should work.  Server 2012 R2 requires the same RDS CAL version as Server 2012.  If you try it and have an issue please reply back.

  • Value assignment and value assignment type in the specification workbench

    Hi all,
There is this section on the specification workbench called u201CProperty Treeu201D, this section contains all the value assignment type, I have two questions on this.
    Question 1 u2013
What is exactly the value assignment type? The SAP help portal said it is a structure specification data and information. What exactly does it mean and its usage?
    Question 2 u2013
May I know where is the SPRO configuration that actually causes the list of value assignment types appear on the property tree section for this particular specification type which I created.
In another word, I create this new specification with specification type u201CREAL_SUBu201C and specification category u201CSubstanceu201C in the specification workbench transaction. Next thing I know is that the property tree section for this particular specification consists of a list of value assignment type. How does the system assigned these list of value assignment types to this specification i created? Coz I didnu2019t do anything.
Where in SPRO and the logic link it up on this??
    Thanks.

    Hello all
EH&S contains a number of submodules (PS, DG, IH etc.). Regarding each submodule a basic customizing is delivered by SAP. One example is the specification type. Usually you will find something like
    REAL_SUB
    LIST_SUB
etc. in the Customizing as discussed. Further more I believe with EH&S 2.7. the specification category come in place (SUBSTANCE as an example). You need to take care regarding this too.
An value assignment type can be grouped in a property tree and a property tree can be linked to a specification type and there are cases known that one specification type is linked only to one property tree (this is a decision regarding business needs and not an IT quesition). Using the EHS& surface you can change the property tree per specification if the set up is done in Customizing. Therefore the property tree is a "view" on the data linked to a specification. (identifeirs etc. are managed different)
A "property" is based on a value assigment type and in many cases on a related EH&S class and characteristic. You will find these types.
A => value assignment type to be used if you need characteristics
B => value assignment type to be used if you need specification listing
C  => value assignment type to be used if you need composition
    .. etc.
You can mix types. That means you can create a property of type "A" and "C" (take a look in SAP original tree; you will find examples how to do it).
A propetry tree is a "list" of assignment type related to a object (specification). Using the property tree you can maintain necessary data. Therefore ithe property tree itself contains per specification the list of "potential" data structures you can fill with data. I belive SAP Standard is delviering now something like 250 properties (valeu assignment types): To e.g. get an MSDS you need to maintain I would assume at least something like 20 up to 50 properties
The area of customizing regrading property tree, specification types etc.  is the most crticial to have a sucessful EH&S project running; any wrong decision gives rise to a high cost later Therefore take your time to understand what effect does which customizing acitivity have later.
Based on the value assignemnt you will create later e.g. a WWI report (like MSDS).
Additionally if necessary you can create customer specific value assignment types by either do a copy from SAP original to "Z" (highly recommended to do so!) or starting from basic.
Starting with EH&S 2.7. you have now more options to "change" EH&S using standard EH&S functionality. Take a look in customizinjg (example: you could create you own "look and feel" of the workbench (you should'nt really do that but it is possible). You can design your own "tab strips" etc.
So once again: the "correct" set up of EH&S in the area of e.g. identifers, speficiation types, property trees etc. is the "core" activity in EH&S customizing and therefore think "twice" before you change the setup up (you need to understand what a change mean)
    With best regards
    C.B.

  • Re: Create Custom Group - All devices minus specific devices.

    Worked ... perfect thanks!

    Hi
Please help ...I want to create a custom group with the following attributes.
    1) Contains all devices.
    2) I want to be able to exclude specific devices if required.
    3) I want all devices to be included automatically in the group upon being added to Spiceworks and to be able to remove them later.
I know there is already an All devices group but I don't want to exclude devices from that because then it would then not contain all devices.
I tried creating a custom group then adding adding the All devices Group to it but it didn't find any devices.
What am I doing wrong? Any help much appreciated.
