"Assigned To" SharePoint 2010 Question
Any thoughts about how to implement an "Assigned To" column within a SharePoint 2010 list that would consist of "Person or Group" items and allow the default value for this column to be set to a defined SharePoint group?
Please use People Picker (Person or Group) for it, In Sharepiont object model it is SPFieldType.Userfield.
SPList list = web.Lists.TryGetList("Tasks");
if (list != null)
// get the SharePoint group
SPUser user = web.EnsureUser(@"domainName\userName");
// Create a new task item
SPListItem task = list.Items.Add();
SPFieldUserValue assignToGroup = new SPFieldUserValue(web, user.ID, user.Name);
task["AssignedTo"] = assignToGroup;
task["Title"] = "Testing";
task["Description"] = "Testing";
task.Update();

SharePoint 2010 question about alert to external user
Any ideas about how to implement an alert within SharePoint 2010 that would cause an alert to be sent to a user outside of one's organization when the value of an "Assigned To" column within a list is set to that external user's e-mail address?
It should just work. Make sure to check your mail flow (e.g. Exchange server transport logs) to validate the mail is leaving the organization. Also make sure that the user that it is Assigned To has an email address assigned to them in the User Information
List (for their User account).

When I tried to deploy the wsp's using managment shell (power shell scripts) everything looks good.
When I go and take a look the "manage farm solutions" thru sharepoint central admin, I see the deployment failed in two servers.
Error is
Could not load file or assembly 'c:\windows\Temp\solution-cxxxxxxxxxxxxxx\xxx.xxx.dll" or one of its dependencies. Access is denied.
Can you please let me know what could be the reason.
Note : I have two app servers and two web servers setup. The deployment is sucessful in 2 apps servers . but 2 web servers are giving error.
Thanks
PichaimaniHi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you wanted to failed to deploy the wsp's using managment shell.
You need to make sure that the dll is registered in the GAC.
Go to %Windows%\assembly. If the dll isn't there , you need to install it to the GAC on the server. Simply drag it into that folder in Windows Explorer, and it should install itself.
Here is a similar thread for your reference:

Question regarding the powershell creation of service applications in SharePoint 2010/2013
Hi
I create all my service applications in SharePoint 2010/2013 using Powershell.
Is there a "best practice" when to start the service Instance for a service application? Is it better to start the service instance prior to creating a service application or after the service application has been create?
I'm curious.
best regards
BjornNot that i'm aware of. If it works then go for it.
I would tend to build the service application and only then activate the instances on servers, however that is going to depend heavily on the application in question. The real heavyweights like Search are a special case in any event. -
Multiple SharePoint 2010 Survey Questions
Hi All
Apologies if this has been answered and solved somewhere else, but I have probably spent 4 days looking through the web for answers.
We have a SharePoint survey with multiple page breaks and branching. Here are the issues we need solutions for, please let me know if I need to add them as separate questions:
We need to change the "Specify your own value:" field to say "Other:" instead. I've read and tried the article from iedaddy
http://iedaddy.com/2012/05/sharepoint-2010-change-survey-option-specify-your-own-value-to-other/ multiple times, but I'm having no luck in getting it to work.
We also need to limit the number of checkboxes that can be selected to 3 in a multiple answers can be selected section. I've read the article on doing this
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2770077/using-javascript-to-limit-survey-choices-to-three-unique-values but that doesn't work and looks like it might only be for 2007, even though some of the commenters said it worked on 2010.
Then we need to be able to export an individual's response to either a PDF or word format or be able to print it straight from the page. When right clicking and printing on the page it has the sides cut off. Someone suggested removing the "nowrap"
tag, but I'm unsure that will solve it and I'm not sure how to do that in SPD.
I also need to redirect the user to a "Thank you" page once they click finish. I've found a solution that works for a one pager, but since we use page breaks, this does not work.
I have access to SDP and limited knowledge of coding, but am willing to try.
Please accept my apologies if there are solutions for these, but I have not been able to locate any that worked for me on the web.
Thank you!Hi, for your first problem I faced it sometime back and though not the sturdiest solution, it did function for me since I did not have very many "Specify your own values" to change.

Looking at your other requirements, I am reminded of my own when I started off with the OOTB SharePoint survey and realized that it is very cumbersome to customize it because it will need you to meddle with the MasterPage and you don't want to take a risk
in Prod environment. I would suggest you to look into other options like InfoPath. InfoPath gives you a much easier platform to design and customize surveys. Page breaks are very easy to design. You can also implement your own code for PDF and publish it as
an admin template. I can promise you that the surveys come out much prettier. -
Question on Location for SharePoint 2010 Central Administration Console
I am a SQL Server Database Administrator and I am new to SharePoint 2010. I have been asked to find out what the best practice is for the SharePoint 2010 Central Administration console. Should it be on the application server or should it be
on it's own server?
lcerniHi Icerni,
As Scott suggested, by default, the server that hosts Central Administration in a three-tier farm is an application server.

SSRS Expressions: Part 1 - Program Flow
PT: "A very comprehensive article about program flow expressions. Nice job. I'm sure many will benefit from this article. Just a little feedback about some terminology that could be more clear: The entire statement that
is typically used to set a property value for an object in an SSRS report is an "expression". Each of the three programming constructs you've mentioned (e.g. IIF, SWITCH & CHOOSE) are "functions" and not expressions or statements."
Jinchun Chen: "Perfect! Good article for SSRS newbie."

Answer an interesting question?
Create a wiki article about it! -
I have recently found that when using a Sharepoint 2010 Content Editor web part to house some Javascript that the window.location.href (or window.location) is not working when the end users have IE8 installed on their PC's. We have confirmed
that the window.location.href is working if the users are on IE7 or Google Chrome with the same Javascript. In addition, we added alert() to the javascript to ensure that it was infact running, which the alerts appeared on the screen with no issues.
The result that I am receiving in IE8 is that when the window.location.href is set to the url that the user should be directed to, it simply refreshes the current page and leaves the user where they originally were.
I have seen the posts to have my site setup as a Trusted Site, but this is not an option for our company as they defined all internal Sharepoint sites as trusted already. Besides this, having all users go into their Internet Options is not really a
solution but a means to annoy your users.
What I am looking for is a permanent solution that I can make within my javascript that will work for both IE7 and IE8 users within a Sharepoint 2010 environment. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. Thanks in advance.
Below is a snipet from my javascript code for review:
<script type="text/javascript">
function RedirectUrl() {
alert('button pressed');
var tb = document.getElementById("tbSearch").value;
var cs = document.getElementById("sfield").value;
var url = "";
if (tb != "") {
url = "FilterName=" + cs + "&FilterMultiValue=*" + tb + "*";
if (cs == "Request%5Fx0020%5FID1"){
alert("Request%20ID%20Search.aspx?" + url)
window.location.href = "Request%20ID%20Search.aspx?" + url;

<br/>Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that the window.location.href not worked in IE 8.
I think the issue
is likely due to the value of your variables. If they contain special or invalid characters, those needs to be passed through
encodeURIComponent before being assigned to window.location.href.
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/18278777/window-location-href-not-working-on-ie
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6297291/window-location-problem-in-ie
You can also use the following methods to check whether it works.
Window.navigate();
Winodw.history.back();
Self.location.href;
Top.location;

Change display name of workflow email address in sharepoint 2010
Hi
How I can change display name of workflow email address in sharepoint 2010. I want to configure display name (from address)of email
for each site collection separately.for example I want to change "software unit"
in below pic to another name for my software unit site collection.
How I can do this?
Thanx.Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you want to change display name of workflow email address in sharepoint 2010.
In my environment, if I assign a task to a user, the email is as below:
The “test” is the site name, the [email protected] is the “From” user.
Do you want to change the “From” field in the workflow?
If so, you can have a look at the "Send email extended" custom SPD workflow activity (http://www.codeplex.com/SPDActivities
) which allow you to specify the sender.

SharePoint 2010 search webservices compatibility with SharePoint 2013
Please let us know whether the SharePoint 2010 search webservice is compatible with SharePoint 2013.
When we try to hit the SharePoint 2013 search service with the query developed in the Sharepoint 2010 , we are getting "System.Not supported" exception as response from server.
Below is the search query we are using:
"<soap:Envelope xmlns:xsi=\"http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance\" xmlns:xsd=\"http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema\" xmlns:soap=\"http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/\">"
+ "<soap:Body>"
+ "<Query xmlns=\"urn:Microsoft.Search\">"
+ "<queryXml>"
+ "<QueryPacket xmlns=\"urn:Microsoft.Search.Query\">"
+ "<Query>"
+ "<Range><StartAt>1</StartAt><Count>50</Count></Range>"
+ "<SupportedFormats>"
+ "<Format>urn:Microsoft.Search.Response.Document:Document</Format>"
+ "</SupportedFormats>"
+ "<Context>"
+ "<QueryText type=\"MSSQLFT\"> SELECT fileName,Title,Path,Write,SiteName,URL,FileExtension,isDocument,contentClass FROM scope() WHERE CONTAINS(Path, SITE_PORT)
and (contentClass = 'STS_Web' OR contentClass = 'STS_ListItem_DocumentLibrary' OR contentClass = 'STS_List_DocumentLibrary') ORDER BY lastModifiedTime DESC </QueryText>"
+ "</Context>"
+ "</Query>"
+ "</QueryPacket>"
+ "</queryXml>"
+ "</Query>"
+ "</soap:Body>"
+ "</soap:Envelope>";
Please helpHi Raghuramk,
is the web service is a search query web service? if yes, i suppose sharepoint 2013 already deprecated,
Search Query web service
Description: The Search Query web service is deprecated in SharePoint 2013.
In SharePoint Server 2010, the Search Query web service exposes the SharePoint Enterprise Search capabilities to client applications. This enables you to access search results from client and web applications outside the context of a SharePoint site.
Reason for change: The Search Query web service is deprecated because the client object model (CSOM) and a new REST-based web service are available for developing Office-wide extensibility scenarios. The CSOM exposes the same functionality
as the Search Query web service, and a larger set of functionality for stand-alone client applications.

Initiate Excel Refresh with SharePoint 2010
Hey guys,
I've got question. I use SharePoint in connection with Excel, but there is a problem. Normally the data is handed over from SharePoint to an Excel Sheet and this Excel sheet does a lot of calculation and then it is shown in the excel webpart. Sometimes the
data is not up-to-date, then I have to refresh Excel manually.
Is there any possible way to push this refreshing without a script?Or is a script the best way to handle this?
Best regards and thanks in advance
Matthiasif you are not using the excel services and you want refresh your data from client side.You can do with script and schedule it as task run what ever time you want.
their are 2 things, again
1) the document library which required checkout before editing.
# This is the location of the document library that has the Excel files
# You must have WebDAV enabled on the server (which is default, I think)
# and the webclient service enabled and running on your workstation.
$library = "\\sharepoint.ad.local@SSL\DavWWWRoot\Shared Documents"
# Start Excel (it will be invisible unless you do $excel.visible = $true)
$excel = new-object -comobject Excel.Application
# Give Excel time to open or it errors inconsistently
Start-Sleep -s 3
$excelfiles = get-childitem $library -recurse -include "*.xls*"
foreach ($file in $excelfiles)
$workbookpath = $file.fullname
if ($excel.workbooks.canCheckOut($workbookpath)) {
# open the worksheet and check it out
$excelworkbook = $excel.workbooks.Open($workbookpath)
$excelworkbook = $excel.workbooks.CheckOut($workbookpath)
# Don't ask cuz I don't know (yet). You have to open it again.
$excelworkbook = $excel.workbooks.Open($workbookpath)
# Refresh all the pivot tables with the new data.
$excelworkbook.RefreshAll()
# Save and Check it in
$excelworkbook.Save()
$excelworkbook.CheckInWithVersion()
$excel.quit()
2) Document library where no checkout required.
# This is the location of the document library that has the Excel files
# You must have WebDAV enabled on the server (which is default, I think)
# and the webclient service enabled and running on your workstation.
$library = "\\sharepoint.ad.local@SSL\DavWWWRoot\Shared Documents"
# Start Excel (it will be invisible unless you do $excel.visible = $true)
$excel = new-object -comobject Excel.Application
# Give Excel time to open or it errors inconsistently
Start-Sleep -s 3
$excelfiles = get-childitem $library -recurse -include "*.xls*"
foreach ($file in $excelfiles)
$workbookpath = $file.fullname
# open the worksheet
$excelworkbook = $excel.workbooks.Open($workbookpath)
# Refresh all the pivot tables with the new data.
$excelworkbook.RefreshAll()
# Save and Close
$excelworkbook.Save()
$excelworkbook.Close()
$excel.quit()

We are currently trying to integrate SharePoint 2010 server with OAM 11g with 10g webgate. In our environment SharePoint site is configured with Claims based authentication with LDAP provider for membership. We have performed all the configurations based on the Oracle documentation with validation mode as OAMHttp.
We are seeing the following behavior after this integration.
1) The user requests access to an SharePoint Site
2) Webgate protecting the site intercepts the request, determines if the resource is protected, and challenges the user.
3) The user enters their OAM credentials; Webgate contacts the OAM Server, which verifies the credentials from user store and authenticates the user. Webgate generates the OAM native SSO cookie (ObSSOCookie), which enables single sign-on and sets the User ID (to username) header variable in the HTTP request and redirects the user to SharePoint site.
Here, instead of taking user to the home page of the site, the SharePoint login page is displayed again.

If anyone have integrated OAM 11g with SharePoint 2010 earlier, appreciate your inputs in this regard.Each license is platform specific, you can't backwards apply or forwards apply licenses from one version of SharePoint to another.
If you do have MSDN access, you'll have access to all current versions of SharePoint, across the current and retired server products.
