Assigng WRT54G a static IP

I recently purchased a new WRTG54G2 to replace an old one that finally died.  I am trying to set it up like the old one, but without access to the configs, I don't know exactly how I did it before.  Here's what I've got.
Cable Modem --> Dedicated Firewall/Gateway Machine (192.168.0.1) --> switch --> other equipment (for a visual you can see this link )
Other equipment is hardwired PC's, and the wireless router.   The wireless router needs to be assigned a static IP Address of 192.168.0.50.  It needs to go through the dedicated firewall/gateway (192.168.0.1).  The DHCP Service will be turned off.
I know that this is possible, however, for the life of me...I can't figure out how I did it before.  In the web interface I can staticlly assign the wireless router an ip of 192.168.0.50 via the automatic configuration (DHCP).  But, if i go into the Static IP setup, change teh IP Address to 192.168.0.50, it won't work (IE, the only 'static ip' is the Local IP Address under Network Setup/Router IP).
Any suggestions for how I can do this?  It's driving me nuts being able to access only the web interface page.
Thanks muchly
Jon

  • Setting WRT54GS to Static IP

I am using a wireless WRT54GS router in my local area network for DHCP. I have saved a copy of the configuration to one of the desktops.
What I am trying to do is install a Astaro Gateway Firewall at the head of my network. This will act as the new DHCP server. The Linksys router will now be used as an Ethernet switch/wireless access point inside the network.
For this to work, I would configure the router to Static IP, and then have it point to the Firewall's gateway address. Let me know if this is correct.
This way, if I have a problem accessing the Internet or otherwise, I can eliminate the router as part of the problem.
    Thanks!
    Chris

well..the only thing you need to do is connect the linksys router to Astaro Gateway Firewall .. change the ip add of the Linksys router to be in the same range of the Firewall router and then disable the DHCP server of the WRT54GS ... this will convert the WRT54GS into an Access Point for the wireless clients and a switch for the wired network ..

  • WRT54G Setting static ip and port forwarding for Xbox360

1)This is my first post and I'm a little new at this. I have a WRT54G v5 router with the latest firmware update. I have the proper ports fowarded that I found on this site. I basically want full priority to my xbox360 because I have been having some lag issues and dropping out of rooms, especially when someone is on the computer. I set a static ip on the xbox, I just picked 192.168.1.36 (Is that an ok #?).
2)I have everything hardwired so I disabled 'wireless access web" under administration and I also disabled "wireless network mode" under the "Wireless" section. Is this correct or ok?? I don't want my neighbors or anything wireless accessing my router, will that do the trick?
3)I'm looking at the first page you see at the linksys config page (under setup) and I see a section that says
    Static DNS 1:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
    Static DNS 2:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
    Static DNS 3:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
My question is do I need to put the static ip that I assigned to my xbox in one of these static DNS entry spots??
4)Under: Applications & Gaming>QoS I set Ethernet port 4 (the one my xbox is on) to high priority. Is that all I need to do to get priority to the xbox over the computer? Or do I need to enter something under "Device Priority" such as device name, mac address, etc.? And do I need to enter something under "Application priority" such as: Application Name, Optimize Gaming Applications, Priority, and Speciific port #, etc.??
    5) Should I disable UPnP?
It's kind of a lot of questions but I really want to understand this fully, any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks alot!

If your XBOX is Wireless , then you need to login to your Router with the Default IP : 192.168.1.1 by opening up a Web Browser.
Then change the Wireless Settings of your Router SSID , Channel : 11, Security : WEP Or WPA Persoanl.
Click on "Applications and Gaming" tab and then click on "Port Range Forwarding" subtab...
    1) On the first line in Application box type in ABC, in the start box type in 53 and End box type in 53, leave the protocol as both and under ip address type in 192.168.1.20 and check the enable box...
    2) On the second line in Application box type in PQR, in the start box type in 3074 and End box type in 3074, leave the protocol as both and under ip address type in 192.168.1.20 and check the enable box...
    3) On the third line in Application box type in XYZ, in the start box type in 88 and End box type in 88, leave the protocol as both and under ip address type in 192.168.1.20 and check the enable box and click on Save Settings...
    4) Once you return to the set up page click on the Security tab and uncheck Block Anonymous Internet Requests and click on Save Settings...
    5) Click on set-up and change the MTU Size to 1452 and click Save Settings...
    6) Goto the XBox Network Settings and IP Address Settings and select manual IP Settings and assign the following on your Xbox
    IP Address :- 192.168.1.20, Subnet Mask :- 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway :- 192.168.1.1...
    7) Also assign the DNS Addresses on the Xbox
    Primary dns :- 4.2.2.2...Secondary dns :- 192.168.1.1..
    8) Turn off your modem, router, and Xbox...Wait for a minute...
    9) Plug the modem power first, wait for another minute and plug the router power cable, wait another minute and turn on the Xbox and test it...it will connect...

  • WRT54G installed, LAN unreachable

    Hi,
I've just installed a WRT54G (which replaced my Intel Wireless/PRO 5000) and now I am unable to reach my LAN.
    Setup:
    Internet -> FW -> 10 port router -> WRT54G -> 2 laptops
The 10 port router also has several PC's and servers connected (fixed).
I was able to use RDP, Ping, Windows Network Browsing, Drive sharing, etc. It all worked fine until I connected the WRT54G. Surfing from the laptops goes fine, but I cannot get access to my LAN. Read the documentation, searched this forum, searched on the internet, triend several options (port forwarding etc), but to no avail...
NAT is disabled, and I've tried to set the WRT54G to 'Router' which caused to disable internet access via the laptops?? Now it's back to 'Gateway'.
    Any help greatly appreciated!!
    R,
    A
Edit: changed nothing to firewall or network settings, laptops are XP Pro and Vista Home. WRT54G version 7.00.1. I am convinced it's a WRT54G issue, since that's the only thing that changed in my setup.

Ok, your tip caused network outage for one and a half hour...
(Because I accidentally disabled DHCP on my firewall.... *cough*)
    My findings:
    1. I was unable to connect to the WRT54G using a direct cable?? Via WLAN 'linksys', after the reset, I was able to connect again..
    2. MAC address on the bottom of the WRT54G *DOES NOT MATCH* the actual MAC!! It says '22' on the end, while it is '23'!! Anyway, hardcoded in my firewall now.
    3. Setting it up the way you described left me without wireless internet connection :-(
    4. Setting the WRT54G on Static IP (was that what you meant?) shows several IP addresses that have to be entered. I got a lot of error messages like 'LAN domain is the same as WAN' and 'IP address such may not be equal to such'. Still, my network really is configured that way and it always worked like a charm. I really miss good documentation on the 'Static IP' page.
Anyway, after fiddling around for 2,5 hours: IT WORKS !!!
I just hate that I don't know what's different..... DHCP is enabled again on the WRT54G, and I gave it a fixed IP. The rest is unchanged afaik.
So, all that's left is a big thank you :-)
    R,
    A
edit: My firewall is also a DHCP server for the green zone, and I am just a Computer Programmer, so don't think I'm a network expert ;-)

  • "Current Time" problem behind a NAT Configured DSL Modem

I have a WRT54GS wireless router behind a NAT configured Alcatel Speedtouch Pro DSL modem.  I have noticed that the "Current Time:" is perpetually "Not Available".   I am speculating that it is because the NAT blocks the syncrhonization, but I'm not absolutely sure.  Can anyone confirm that this indeed could be the problem?
If this is the case, is it possible to configure a NAT router to pass this signal?
I would like to have the benefits of NAT, but I would also like to utilize the WRT54GS's policy feature to limit my kid's internet activity after hours.
    Thanks in advance!

Alcatel makes a lot of SpeedTouch modems.  I cannot tell which one you have.  I assume it must be a "modem-router" rather than a true modem.
What "Intenet connection type" are you using in the WRT54GS?  I assume it is probably DHCP or static.  Disconnect the WRT54GS and the Speedtough. Set the "Internet connection type" on the WRT54GS to "static", then set the (WAN) "Internet IP address" to an address that the SpeedTouch will see as a fixed LAN IP address, and set the "Default Gateway" to the LAN IP address of the SpeedTouch, and set the "Subnet Mask" to 255.255.255.0 , and set the "DNS server address" to your true Internet DNS server address  (you should be able to find this info in the SpeedTouch).
    Hope this helps.
Please let me know whether or not this worked.
If you need more help, please state the exact model number of your modem (not the WRT54GS?

  • WRT54G: Static mode set on WAN side, but still sometimes pulls address via DHCP!

We've had (6) WRT54G (v5) installed in a building, for about (2) years now, with no previous problems. Now, ALL of them are doing something weird.  They are all set for Static mode on the WAN side (we have static ip addresses for these), yet every now and then they will spontaneously pull an address via DHCP on their own.  When they do this, the setting itself doesn't change.  It will still show "STATIC" in the pull down list.  But, the address will no longer be the address we assigned to the unit, and will instead appear to be an address that it pulled via DHCP.
Thanks, in advance, for any help and insight into this strange problem.
    David

Ah.  In that case, we're not going to put our client through the frustration of chasing a ghost in the machine.  We'll just replace them with new ones.  But, I'll try this on them in my spare time and let you know how it goes.
    Thanks for your assistance,
    David

  • WRT54GS won't connect my static IP computer to internet

My goal is to get completely connected to a torrent site. Their instructions were to configure a static address for my computer, forward a port and life will be good.
My current setup is my computer is wired to a WRT54GS which in turn is wired to an Actiontec GT701-WG DSL modem. There is one other computer wired to the Linksys and a third computer connected wireless.
I tried connecting my computer directly to the Actiontec and I was completely connected which increased my up load speed about 4X (20-25 kB/s to over 100) when seeding. Downside was it left the other two computers without a connection as there is only one out port on the modem.
It seems the Linksys is choaking my connection. I found some great tutorials on this site; I followed one and went in the computer and made its address static by assigning it an address outside the dynamic range used by the Linksys. The tutorial ended with SAVE and EXIT. I did and then I couldn't connect to the internet. I did the power on procedure of the modem, Linksys, and computer three times and nothing improved. I had to switch back to an automatic address for the computer in order to connect again.
Is there something I should have done to the Linksys after I made my computer static? If the computer is outside the range assigned by the router how can it see the computer?
I've been working on this for at least six hours with zero success. I would really appreciate it if someone would tell me how to get connected. Maybe there is another tutorial I could work through, just point me. Thanks.
    Dirk

Well in such case the only option i can suggest is that to check the firmware on the router .... If it seems older download it from linksys website .... see if it works ...

  • WRT54G only allowing one unit to attach to static IP printer

Hello, I have a small network in a classroom with one printer with a network card.
I have made that printer a static IP 192.168.2.50.
Wireless PC' have no problem attaching and printing.
For some reason... when I attach a wired PC to that printer using an IP port connection using tcp/ip  it only allows one PC at a time to attach.
Is this a setting in the WRT54G or should I look to the network card.

i don't think it has to do anything with the router...because had it been the router , even the wireless computers wouldn't have worked...
so it seems to me an issue between the network card...

  • WRT54G v5 forgets static IP address

My WRT54G v5 forgets it's assigned static IP address.
While accessing the router's settings via a web browser, while in "Status," "Login Type" correctly lists "Static," but the number appears as all zeros.
Clicking back to "Setup" (where all numbers appear just fine) and then clicking "Refresh" makes the IP address reappear in the "Status" window.
Any idea why the address in "Status" gets reset to zero?
FWIW, we own five IP addresses. Address #1 is the main IP address we use for our DSL router. The IP address in the status window is one of the secondary addresses.
I'm using Firmware v1.00.1. We're an all-Macintosh, and so I need to know if any firmware updates adversely affect Macs (I seem to recall seeing something about that somewhere in this site).
We don't connect wirelessly all that often, so I don't know exactly when the reset occurs (the wireless feature is primarily for guests to our office).
    Thanks for any thoughts.
    M.

Yes, there's the latest firmware update for your router and the version number for the new version is 1.01.1... upgrading to that firmware could fix your problem

  • No static ip option.WRT54G

Note :- I had only router connected to my PC when I was configuring it  & not de modem.
I wanna configure mah WRT54G with the static IP provided by my ISP. but when log on to web browser GUI (192.168.1.1) it has only DHCP option under Internet settings & Web browser shows only to main tab
    1> basic
2> some tab related to port forwarding/
Is it necessary to connect modem to router for configuring router  with de Static ip of mah ISP ?
Message Edited by crazypal24x7 on 11-23-2008 10:01 PM

It seems that you aren't getting all the options on the setup page. Upgrade the firmware on the router, you should be able to get all the options.

  • Wrt54g version 3 static arp help?

First off hello all i have a PS3 and its set up to automatically turn on with remote play.
As some of you may know the 54G is one of the routers that makes the PS3 turn on without remote play being active.
after some searching it seems its tied to ARP and other people have been successful assigning a static ARP to the address on the PS3 ( PS3 outside of DNS range)
The only thing is a wasnt able to track down a way to do it with the linksys. I was advised on one forum to use telnet but when i type /telnet 192.168.1.1 i get a message
connecting to 192.168.1.1...could not open connection to the host, in port 23: connect failed
im running linksys firmware 4.21.1 and my WRT54G is connected by ethernet to the router.
im sure this question seems silly to some and i apologize. i tried searching around the web and couldnt seem a way to set this up.
any help is greatly appreciated. hoping i do not need to buy a new router
    Best Wishes Adam

you did not list your router model # & and guessing your laptop has a internal NIC.  If everything worked fine b4, I'm assuming something just got hosed up.  I would power down your laptop, gaming devices, & anything else you have connected/ using the router.  I would then reset the router.  Most models have a button you depress for a FULL 10-15 seconds.  Then power up your laptop & test your connection.  If all is well, set your security functions, etc.  Then connect the rest of your equipment.
Good luck & let us know how it turns out or if we can assist further.

  • WRT54GS static DNS entries

    Hi,
I am setting up the WRT54GS to use my own static DNS servers inside the
text fields "Static DNS 1-3" under the setup tab. I just want to confirm
the router will use the DNS servers in numerical order? That is DNS server 1 will be used first and DNS server 3 will be used as a last resort. It seems intuitive the router would work this way BUT I want to confirm this before relying upon the feature.
Also can the router automatically use the DNS servers provide by the ISP
if user specified DNS servers noted are not operational?
    Thanks,

Assuming you are using DHCP, configure your router with the DNS servers in the order you want. From your PC go to a command prompt and insure you have the updated IP config by typing in ipconfig /renew. Then type ipconfig /all. The output provided will tell you the order of DNS servers that will be tried.
    Your second question:
The router will not use the default ISP DNS servers if your hardcoded DNS servers fail. By typing in DNS entries in the router, your are overidding the DHCP feature in your router.

  • WRT54G dropping me and my static IP

I have a WRT54G and it keeps dropping me. I have assigned my PC a static IP of 192.168.1.51 and my gateway 192.168.1.1. Every once in a while my internet will slow down or stop working. Any ideas?

What is the exact model number of your router? You might need to update the firmware of your router.

  • Can't change router WRT54GS V7 to static IP

I have a couple of Linksys WRT54GS V7 routers, they work fine, with the exception that when I login to the web interface, I select the drop down box for DHCP to change it to a static IP, the page refreshes, but comes right back to the same screen with DHCP selected again, I can change the time zone with no issues, I entered the Static DNS info. I've tried a couple of different PC's with a couple of different IE versions. I already updated to the newest firmware, firmware is 7.50.8, I've also factory reset it a couple of times, and I've just run into a brick wall.  I've setup hundreds of these routers before so it's not like I don't know how. has anyone else had this issue? can anyone tell me another way of setting it up for Static? Thanks, Chase
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I have  a pair of wrt54gs V7's (latest firmware as well). I found that assigning them a static WAN IP works for a little while, then addresses (including DNS lookups) fail to resolve. Seems to be an arp cache thing in the wrt54gs.
Note this issue occurs on laptops connected to the lan ports, whether Windows or Linux. This is a separate problem from some versions of IE and Firefox with their own built in name caches where you have to reboot Windows to clear (and yes this does happen on XP as well as Vista and Win 7, depends on the version of FF and IE).
I had to leave the static ip's to be assigned dynamically.
Note the IDENTICAL static IP WAN configuration works fine on wrt54g V5 & V6. I did screen shots and A/B'd them because my 54g's worked fine. You need to leave the gs powered off for about 10 minutes with wan static IP's to see the symptoms start up again. A quick reboot will not fix the problem. Note I first thought it could be an arp cache problem on an intermediate router, but when the same problem occurred after substituting the 56gs for a working a wt300n (static IP's) it was clear it is actually a problem with the 54gs. It is slightly possible that some combination of latency and an overly tight arp cache timeout is set when the static wan is used, I don't know.

  • WRT54GS and a Static IP

I have been trying to get my WRT54GS to work with my ISP with the Static IP address they have given me for a while now and cannot get it to work.  This router works fine with a DHCP address assigned from the ISP but not with the static address.
To work around the problem I have a BEFVP41 router setup with the static IP they gave me and then I put the wireless router behind it.  So I know the Static IP stuff is working fine and is not being used by someone else.
Anybody had any issues getting a WRT54GS to work with a Static IP?

It is my City, Spanish Fork in Utah.
I have tried what you have suggested.  Cloning the MAC addr of the BEFVP41.  That's what I thought as well is that the ISP had the IP tied to the MAC of the BEFVP41.  I even got the ISP to flush the router cache as well.  They have even swapped out my Cable modem.  I was going to try a different Linksys router that I have at work but of course I forgot to bring it home.  I have also tried disabling "block WAN requests"  Still no go.
I've pulled all my hair out on this one (oh wait I already lost all my hair)
