Assigning a Scratch Disk in Indesign CS5

Hello,
I just installed CS5 after working with CS4. This may be a silly question... but I am wondering if there is a way to assign a scratch disk in Indesign CS5?
I have located something in Preferences > file handling - Document Recovery Data. I see that you can browse and select a folder for recovery data to go to but I don't think this is what I am looking for.
Correct me if I'm wrong but the scratch disk is used to temporarily store information such as things you've copied & pasted and helps alleviate memory issues? When I was working in CS4 I had a memory error issue and we fixed it but installing more memory and assigning an external hard drive specifically used as the scratch disk. I'm trrying to prevent any future issues...
In Indesign CS4 I use the Preferences Panel to set up the scratch disk location. I've also been able to set up the scratch disk in Photoshop CS5 but I'm not able to locate the same option in Indesign CS5.
Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

InDesign doesn't have a scratch disk, that's photoshop you're thinking of.
A scratch disk is basically your hard drive. It uses the drive as temp swap (or virtual memory/paging file) when the RAM isn't able to cope. But InDesign does not need this.
If you want you can increase your Paging File in Windows but it's not for the feint hearted and may have adverse affects on your system performance overall.
On the Mac you can assign more memory to an application http://support.apple.com/kb/TA21666
Hi, Eugene:
The Apple support reference piqued my interest because I wasn't aware of memory management in OS X, except that Parallels and VMware Fusion offer the ability to favor the demands of the host OS (Mac OS X) or the hosted OS (like Windows, Linux, etc) - the favored one gets more resources, and the other gets the short end.
This Apple support note states it's for OS versions through 9.x, so there's no benefit to systems running InDesign.
If it's an important requirement to the original poster, it's worth filing a formal feature request at https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform

  • Can't change Scratch disk is PS CS5.1

I can't change the scratch disk in PS on my Mac Pro. I hold down keys cmd, option, and shift to get Photoshop to allow me to dump prefs. I then go into Preferences and change the scratch disk another internal hd. I close PS, but it won't re-open unless I hold down the keys above. When I do get it open again the checkmark for the scratch drive is back where it was.
    Any suggestions?

No idea what the problem is but this is always a good starting point:-

  • CS5 Scratch disk compression

Chris suggested the registry keys for CS5 for Windows 7 were available on the dvd or via a download.
I have searched my dvd and the Adobe site and cant find the registry key  files for CS5 Photoshop on Windows 7. Can anyone please provide a link on  the Adobe site to download these or if they are hidden in one of the on  disk folders (no Goodies folder as in CS2) how I can find them.  I would like to disable scratch disk compression in CS5 for Windows 7/64bit on my pc workstation.

Resetting Photoshop Preferences will fix this issue. Follow the instructions outlined here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/375776
If you have larger troubles, hold down Alt, Ctrl, and Shift keys (Mac: Command, Option, Shift) while starting up Photoshop. A dialog box will appear asking if you wish to delete the preferences/settings file.

  • Macbook Pro with Dual hard drives. Scratch Disk, Memory 64bit, Raid, Set Up Questions.

Hello, this is my first post.
I just upgraded from the original 2006 17" Macbook Pro to a refurbished 13" Macbook Pro 2.53GHZ 4GB Ram (2009 model).
I bought the MCE Tech Optibay and installed it (if you dont know anything about it, ask me, its amazing.) So now I have 2x 500GB 7200RPM Seagate hard drives installed.
I am running Snow Leopard, CS3, Lightroom 1.4.
I have the main hard drive set up with Snow Leopard and all the Applications. I keep all my files on external firewire 800 drives, except files I am currently working on.
The second hard drive is set up as a scratch disk for Photoshop CS3 and that is it.
I am looking to upgrade to CS5 and Lightroom 3 here within this month or so. Or if I get anxious, tomorrow, haha.
I want to know the best setup I can do with my current set up with CS3 and for my future setup with CS5.
    Any info will appreciated.
-Would some kind of raid set up with my internal drives be better? How does raid work with scratch disks?
-If I upgrade to 8GB memory in my macbook pro, would I even see a difference in performance if I didn't have a scratch disk? Since CS5 and Snow Leopard can use more memory in 64bit.
I think thats all I have on my brain right now. I may have more questions, or I can guarantee I will have more later.
    Thanks alot.

First the scratch. Like you said, most everyone has a different take on scratch discs but I'd guess you're wasting one heck of a lot of hard drive space using all 500 GB for Scratch, did I read that right? If I did read it correctly YES, partition it and get some use out of it!!
I've got a unibody MBP 2.93GHz, OS 10.5.8, CS3 & PS 5 (running in 32bit mode), and 8 gigs of ram. I've partitioned the one 300 GB drive so 50GB is scratch, the other partition is for OS, & Apps, and documents (images).
I use LR 2 first than export to PS 5 to finish up. My photos get to be 300MB to 500MB in size and both versions of PS work on this setup just fine. Using PS 5 in 64 bit mode is faster opening files but NON of my plugin's are 64 bit yet, that's why I'm still stuck in 32 bit mode.
Not knowing what size or kind of files you work on makes giving advice a bit tough but try setting the status indicator (don't know the right name for it) in the bottom left corner of any PS open file to "Efficiency" and watch what happens when you process your files. I rarely see mine drop below 90%, I've got the usable RAM in PS Prefs set to it's max suggested, cut way back on History and Cache.
Can't wait for NIK and others to offer their plugin in 64 bit, later this year is what I was told.
There used to be an old "rule of thumb" with old version of PS about Scratch disc size. I don't remember exactly but it may have been 3 to 5 times the size of your biggest file??
    Good luck, Alan

  • When starting Final Cut Pro 7.0.3 I am all of a sudden getting a message that says "One or more of the scratch disks don't have read/ write access" and now the app won't operate - how do I fix this so I can use Final Cut Pro?

Glad you found the answer.  But something seems wrong.  FCP should be able to assign the scratch disk to your startup drive.  It's not advisable, but it should be possible.  You might want to try and figure out what's going on before what ever's going on cause other problems.

  • Error message:" Couldn't complete the command because the scratch disks are full" Ive try to fix this many times following different steps but none of them work and my disks equal to over 250GB. Please help.

. This error message pops up in Photoshop  when i just wanna create a new plain white template. Good day!
my disks equal to over 250GB.
What’s relevant is the space on the disk/s you have assigned as Scratch Disks – what are they (Phortoshop > Preferences > Performance > Scratch Disks)?

  • Why doesn't Illustrator recognize all of my hard disks when I go to select a scratch disk?

I have four dard drives installed on my Mac Pro. One is the 640 GB drive that came with it, one is a 500 GB drive and there are also two 1.5 TB drives. However, when I go to select the Scratch Disk in Illustrator CS5 it only lists the Start-up disk and Time Machine as my Scratch Disk options. What gives? Photoshop shows all of the hard drive options for Scratch disks.

  • LR and Scratch disk

    Hi All,
Hoping you can help me understand LR better.
LR must write to disk (for example the history states) and i'm just wondering where it all goes! (I'd like to be able to configure my drives / location of catalog etc without invoking irrational witch craft.)
When generating previews - it's the catalog previews.lrdata
    What about
    History
    Cache
    Calculations in Develop module
Processed files in Print module before it goes to print (not draft mode)
    etc
    etc
In PS you're obviously able to assign a scratch disk, in LR you're not - but i would have thought they'd both have similar needs?
How does it work - anyone got any ideas? Haven't been able to find anything.
    Cheers

    Hi John [edit, McW],
That would make sense (cat on boot, images on other) but it would be lovely to find out how the app actually works. I read Jeff Schewe say that he has his (PS) images and (PS) scratch disk on different partitions of the same disc (or raid 0 to be factually accurate) which seemed a bit counter intuative, but because the computer only "works" on an image once it's been brought in from the disk, it only ever reads or writes from one of the partitions at any given time.
My impression is that LR isn't very disc intensive - by looking at activity monitor. The CPU use seems to max out, and the memory can run quite high - which implies that it gets the info in, works on it and then stores it all in memory rather than disc cache. This then means that the limiters are CPU and RAM, and not disc speed. (Which ties in with there being no scratch disk.)
But as other people have wrote on these boards, LR is very slow at resolving thumbs compared to other apps, which i guess wasn't something that was hoped for by the engineers (but this could be because LR has so many (more) variables that come from the develop module). So, i guess if the limiters are CPU and RAM, then there's not much you can do to speed it up.
Perhaps the best thing to do is to quit other apps - free up as much memory as poss, that is if you don't fancy popping out to the shops to buy a new computer or some RAM. Bit of a dissapointing conclusion!
With me, LR's reasonably fast, but it is the biggest brake on the whole of my workflow (that's with auto write disabled - shame as the xmp side cars are rather robust). To print when not using draft mode is a pain - for example a 12 image contact sheet might come from around 1/4 or 1/3 of a Gb of RAW files which then have to be processed - in this case, slow shouldn't surprise anyone ... oh it depresses me just writing it!
But the app itself is such a fantastic development! The stuff you can do with it is incredible, and i really couldn't do with out it ... thought when there's a tight deadline it really does kill me!
    Cheers

  • Illustrator missing scratch disks.

However, when I go to select the Scratch Disk in Illustrator CS5 it only lists the Start-up disk and Time Machine as my Scratch Disk options. What gives? If Photoshop sees all of these hard drives as scratch disk options, it would seem that the issue is with Illustrator, not the hard drives.

  • Help Changing Scratch Disk on Existing Project

I created a project and worked with it, unknowingly, using the default Scratch Disks that Adobe assigns on your C drive in Premiere Pro CS4. Now I want to assign the Scratch Disks to other hard drives in my system. Everytime I do this and close the project and re-open it again, it defaults back to the original default Scratch Disk setup.
Can anyone tell me how I can get the project to recognize and use my new Scratch Disk setup?
    Thank you.

What you're doing is the only way.  It should work fine.  I can't think of any reason that it isn't working.

  • Scratch Disk Placement

I am running PS7 on an XP SP2 system with 512 MB ram and a slow processor. I have two internal hard drives and have tried many times to assign the scratch disk to my second drive which is the largest and fastest. When I do this, Photoshop will not open and I have to delete the preference file in order to get the program to run. What could be causing Photoshop not to recognize my second drive on startup? Any help would be appreciated, as I was hoping this would increase performance on this old machine.

    Re: Scratch Disk Placement
I am running Adobe PS7.1 on my System- specs: Windows XP SP2. 1.52 Gb RAM- 2.7 Processor. 63Gb space on local HDD. 1.3Tb space on remote HDD.
My problem: I am trying to install PS7 on my C-Drive- but after installation- the program fails to initialize due to the error that "My Scratch-Discs" are full. Now- I cleaned- out all my Adobe files after uninstallation- but still- when I reload PS7- it would not initialize due to the same error. I cannot open another file in which I could store the Scratch discs- due to the fact that I cannot open the program at all to set the parameters. Anybody that can help me there?
Don't know if this'll help but here goes anyway....
I made this mistake...in my new i7/6gb 64bit machine...after having slid the performance slider/memory useage allocator in Photoshop Elements7 to 100% (to use all of 1602mg of ram the 32bit program would allow....previously limit was 50% in my 32bit OS machine), I figured that I could do the same with PS6....wrong....PS6 wouldn't even open afterwards....
I had to uninstall/reinstall PS6  and leave the memory useage set to 50%-1919537kb of ram (half of "available" ram of 383907kb)...all works well now...
As for the scratch disk....I made a partition of 20gb in my 2nd drive that will be solely used for that purpose....another smaller partition on that 2nd drive of 12gb is reserved for my page file/virtual memory partition...this way there is no overlap/conflict of useage with any other program (though I've read that with 6gb or more in the machine virtual memory will not be accessed much)...the programs themselves, along with the OS are in the primary drive where temporary files (initial downloads of photos) will be briefly stored until the chosen to be saved are sent to the 2nd drive....the machine and PS seem to work fine that way...
    Good luck...and happy new year.

  • Could not use the type tool because the scratch disks are full in Photoshop CS5.1?

How do of get rid of the scratch disk error in photoshop? I'm using Photoshop CS5.1 extended and this error message apperars each time I try to do anything in Photoshop that message comes up. Anyone have any suggestions on how I can remove this error?

What operating system are you using?
Is your hard drive running low on free space?
How much free space is left on your hard drive?
Is your scratch disk for photoshop set to the Startup drive or some other drive?

  • Photoshop CS5 does not want to open after I changed the scratch disks in prefs

I was working on a large document in Photoshop CS5 that ate too much of my main drive (to the point I had to quite and restart a few times to clear it out) when the main drive was set as a scratch disk. I went in to preferences and changed the scratch disk to my secondary internal drive, where I keep all my media. Then quit Photoshop to clear the cache.
When I tried to open Photoshop again I get a message at start up (haven't gotten in to the program yet) saying: "Could not open a scratch file because the disk is not available". Clicked OK. Then another warning message: "Could not initialize Photoshop because the disk is not available."
Both disks are mounted and available. Since Photoshop never actually opens up I cannot go in and reset the scratch disk to my intinital settings.
Anybody got an idea what I can do to solve this?
    Thanks,
    /Fred

Worst case: trashing prefs by keeping ctrl-alt-shift pressed while starting Photoshop (and then using the dialog) should allow you to open it.

  • What's the Best Photoshop CS5 Scratch Disk Setup for New MacPro 12 Core?

    Hello all...
I'm awaiting delivery of a new MacPro 12 Core with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD drive (Bay1) + 2TB (Bay2) + 2TB (Bay3). Normally I would partition about 60GB of one of the 2TB drives to make an exclusive scratch disk for Photoshop to ensure optimum performance.... with the new spec MacPro and especially the new 512GB SSD, do I still need to do this..?
Any suggestions of comments most welcome... as I want to try to get my new machine set up as best I can before I start copying over my existing data and filling hard drives etc. Photoshop CS5 and Quark Express 8 are my two core apps that I use daily.

…Well yes, technically you've got me on that I will admit.  I'll try to rephrase to be a bit more accurate. The best scratch disk is one you don't need to rely on performance wise, by having enough RAM to handle the data performance needy tasks that would otherwise be sent to the scratch disk, when enough RAM can't be accessed by Photoshop…
    …Hows that?
    Still wrong, alas.
The scratch disk is used always.
See this very short (two-message) thread:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2847996#2847996
    Excerpt:
    [Chris Cox writes:]
…Photoshop needs to allocate scratch space for data, in case it needs to
write that data to disk later -- otherwise you would randomly fail with
"out of scratch space" in the MIDDLE of an operation…
Furthermore, Photoshop sets the size of the scratch disk ahead of time—the instant you open an image file or create a new document—basing it on assumptions the application makes taking into account your usual, past workflow practices, your settings and the pixel dimensions of the document.
Bottom line:  the scratch disk always plays a part.
Do a forum search filtering the options with Chris Cox in the "Who" box, "scratch" as key word, and Photoshop Macintosh as the forum.  You'll find some enlightening reading.  Examples:

  • CS4, CS5, Scratch Disk and Prefs

I am on OSX10.6.8 with CS4 and CS5 (some of my actions only run on CS4, so I quit and launch back and forth).
I had my CS 4 and 5 Scratch Prefs set to a specific scratch partition on another local disk where I had a small partition dedicated towards it. I was doing some disk maintanance on that other disk and forget to go into CS and reset the scratch to the start-up disk. Now I cannot open CS4 or CS5 because it is looking for a scratch disk that does not exist.
Is a complete re-install the only fix, or is there a command line or other way other way than a complete re-install?

Resetting Photoshop Preferences will fix this issue. Follow the instructions outlined here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/375776
If you have larger troubles, hold down Alt, Ctrl, and Shift keys (Mac: Command, Option, Shift) while starting up Photoshop. A dialog box will appear asking if you wish to delete the preferences/settings file.
