Assigning applications to a desktop

OS Lion has the option to assign applications to a set desktop. This works well for many applications and is a useful feature; but some, such as Word, often open in the active desktop - can this be resolved?

This happens even if you have them assigned to a specific desktop? Are you sure when this happens that the desktop you are in isn't the desktop assigned to them?
In other words if I have safari assigned to desktop 2, for example, and I am in desktop 2 when I open safari then it will appear to be opening in the active window.

  • Why can't I assign applications to different desktops?

    Why can't I swipe with three fingers to go from application to application which are assigned to different desktops since moving from Lion to Mountain Lion?

    What I did: I used trackpad preferences and changed the settings to the following:
    1) 3 finger swipe to go to previous and next page
    2) 4 finger swipe to switch spaces.
    Works like a charm now.

  • Assign applications to desktop

    How can I assign applications to open on specific desktops? i used spaces but seems it's gone
    I still have the applications i used to have assigned to different spaces now assigned to desktops
    but how can i cinfigure it now? how come when i change the desktop backgriund i have to to it in every different desktop?
    Thanks

    Go to the Desktop you want to use. Right-click the application's icon in the Dock. Select Options > Assign To > This Desktop.
    Desktops can have different backgrounds, if you want. A new Desktop get the same background as Desktop 1, until you change it. But changing a background only applies to the current Desktop.

  • Assigning Applications to Desktops

    How do I assign "non-lion" 100% compatible applications to a Desktop - since Expose/Spaces is gone, I'm trying to assign VMWare to it's OWN desktop, and so far, I can assign Chrome to it's own Desktop by right clicking on it ("Assign to THIS Desktop" AHA!) where as VMWare isn't aware of this?  Is this an Application dealio?  It's kinda counter-intuitive to re-open the applications where they were, and not KEEP the same desktops - it's a few seconds to change it so I can work efficiently without lotsa windows crowding the desktop... but can't someone help a brutha in need?

    Well - I'm not having a problem MOVING it to a desktop, I'm having a problem LINKING it to that desktop from now on.  Ideas?  Chrome - i got working fine, some other applications are working fine - VMWare is being cranky...

  • Query on using Spaces feature to assign applications to spaces

    I like the new Spaces feature, having been a user of VirtueDesktops before.
    I have an issue with assigning an application to a particular Space.
    The instructions from Help are below. I was able to do this for 4 applications, which seems to be as many as fit into the window available for listing them. Then, I hit the "+" to add other applications that are already running. When the pop-up menu appears, it does not list those applications (it does list Finder and the System Preferences that is running). So I go ahead and pick the application off the list from my Applications/ directory. It doesn't then appear in the list of applications in Spaces so that I can assign it to a particular space.
    I assume that there isn't a limit to the number of applications I can assign in this way. Or is there a limit of 4.
    In addition, when I use the Help feature on the Spaces assignment preferences panel, this text appears:
    "To choose a space for the application, click the current space and choose from the pop-up menu."
    However, it is not clear what "click the current space" means. One of the little numbered box images for the spaces that I have? Nothing happens when I click them.
    Thanks for help.
    (Optional) To assign an application to a particular space, click the Add button and choose the application.

    If you want the application to always open in a particular space, click the pop-up menu and choose the number for the space you want.

    If you want an application to always be available, no matter which space you’re in, open the pop-up menu and choose Every Space.

    You cannot add the same application you already assigned to a Space.
    When you click the + sign, the pop-up menu shows the running applications which have not been assigned to a Space. If an application has been assigned to a Space, it will not be shown in that menu because the System Preferences/Expose/Spaces preference pane is used only for assigning applications to Spaces. If it is already assigned, there is no need to show it because it cannot be assigned to another Space. In that menu if you select “other” it will open your Applications folder, but any apps that have been assigned (and others that are not applications) will be grayed out. Perhaps what you are trying to do is assign the same application to two different Spaces. This cannot be done with the virtual desktop in Leopard, Spaces.
    You said you had experience with other virtual desktops. Those often let the user assign an application to two or three or more desktops. Spaces does not allow that. An application can be assigned to one Space or all Spaces, but not anything in between.
    I have interacted with other users who have experience using other virtual desktops and see this as flaw in Spaces. Perhaps it is. I have not worked with other virtual desktops. But this is how Spaces operates as a virtual desktop: an application can be assigned to one Space or all Spaces, but not 2, 3, 4 or any other number.
    If you see this as a big drawback with Spaces, you should notify Apple. I don’t remember the website for reporting bugs and suggestions, but you should be able to find it on these forums.
    If you are trying to navigate to the application running in Space 5, hold down the Control key and press the number 5 key. If you want to move the application in Space 5 to an adjacent Space, grab a window of the application in Space 5 and drag it to the any of the four edges of that window and it will switch to that Space. However, if you quit that application and open it again, it will open in its assigned Space, Space 5.

  • Can't assign apps to specific desktops

    Since Mavericks, when I right click a dock icon, I no longer have the option to assign the app to a specific desktop. I have to choose 'desktop on display x' or all or none.
    This was incredibly useful before, and I can't understand why they would replace this functionality instead of extending it.
    Anybody else as annoyed as I am?

    Sorry @n1c4shby, I've hijacked your post (but I think I understand what you're getting at...)
    I know what you're saying @robdrage, and having separate spaces on each display is the way to go and I'm not for going backwards, but the issue is:
    that sometimes the Dock option will allow me to assign an application to - say - Desktop 4 on Display 2, then sometimes the best it will offer me is Desktop on Display 2.
    This behaviour seems arbitrary, and also seems to change with each restart.
    Maybe I'm missing a trick here.

    Hi,
    Try these 3 solutions
    1. Did you start vncserver services as:
    service vncserver start
    2.Check that port 5901 has not been blocked by a firewall:
    # nc -vz localhost 5901
    You should get a connection and a termination. If you get an error, fix the firewall.
    3. service iptables stop
    Hope This Helps

  • Since upgrade to Windows 8, cannot save .rdp files under the Remote Desktop Connection application on the Desktop

    Since I upgraded to Windows 8, I am no longer able to save individual Remote Desktop Connection files as .rdp files. I am talking about the traditional Remote Desktop Connection application on the Desktop that was in previous Windows versions, not the
    Remote Desktop App from the Windows 8 store.
    When I try to click on the Save button I get "An error occurred while saving to file"
    When I try to click on the Save As button I get "Unable to open connection file" with the file address being where I tried to save it with the file name at the end.
    Also when I upgraded to Windows 8, my .rdp files disappeared from my Documents folder.
     I need to create different .rdp files for different programs that my employees get into on my server. Now I have to hand type all the info each time into the Programs tap on the Remote Desktop Connection window, because I can't save to an
    .rdp file.
     I like the Remote Desktop App from the Windows store but it won't let me designate specific programs to use using standard dos notation (ie c:\program files\ etc..). It just goes to my server desktop.
     I want to promote Windows 8 to my employees but I need either .rdp files for the traditional Remote Desktop Connection or the ability to open specific programs using dos notation in the Windows Store Remote Desktop App.

    I've installed three times with no luck. I downloaded the Creative Cloud Packager off the licensing site: https://licensing.adobe.com. I unpacked and choose my applications. The install seemed to be successful, but I don't so any of the applications anywhere.

    Hi,
    Creating package doesn't mean it will install the product,
    You will need to install the package now. Please follow the instructions mentioned in the below articles

    Please let me know if it doesn't help.

  • How to recognize if application is installed using "Install Application on Remote Desktop" option on Windows Server 2008 R2

    How to recognize if application is installed using "Install application on remote desktop..." option in Control Panel in Windows Server 2008 R2?
    Basically, as administrator, I can't say if the user installed application using "Install application on remote desktop..." in Control Panel or he just installed it by clicking the .msi executable. I can't find anything that makes any difference.
    I could not find anything in the registry. I am quite confused.

    Hi,
    Thank you for your posting in Windows Server Forum.
    Please make sure that you are using category view of control panel-programs to check the application. And in addition to “install application on Remote Desktop server” user can also use command line also.
    change user /install
    change user /execute
    change user /query
    “The first time you run the application, it searches the home directory for its .ini files. If the .ini files are not found in the home directory, but are found in the system directory, Terminal Services copies the .ini files to the home directory, ensuring
    that each user has a unique copy of the application .ini files. Each user should have a unique copy of the .ini files for an application. This prevents instances where different users might have incompatible application configurations.” (Quoted formthis
    article).
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks,

  • E-Rec : How to assign applications to requisitions?

    Hello Experts,
    We have just started blue-printing of E-Rec and I am successful creating a requisition from Recruiter's page. I am just concerned how to assign applications to a requisition as search doesnt work being a very new system. I was trying to create an application using link "Create External Applications" from Recruiter's login page. Please guide.
    Additional details: We have ECC and E-Rec on different box with EhP5.
    Thanks and regards,
    SAP E-Rec Guy

    You can always search for postings using a reference code - TREX and the indexes do not need to be setup for that to work.  The create internal / external applications link is really used for a recruiter to create an application on behalf of a candidate.  You could always just register a new external candidate and search for the job posting using the reference code and apply that way.

  • Openbox :: linking an application to a desktop [SOLVED]

    I'm trying to get Openbox to open certain applications in certain desktops, like Firefox in desktop 3 and Quanta in desktop 1 etc.
    I've followed the instructions in the Openbox web site and created the following in ~/.config/openbox/rc.xml
    <openbox_config>
    <applications>
    <application name="firefox">
    <desktop>3</desktop>
    <maximized>yes</maximized>
    <layer>normal</layer>
    </application>
    <application name="quanta">
    <desktop>1</desktop>
    <maximized>yes</maximized>
    <layer>normal</layer>
    </application>
    </applications>
    </openbox_config>
    Now, if I understand correctly, when I open firefox (regardless of the desk I'm in at the time) it should open in desktop 3 ... but it does not
    Instead it opens in whatever desktop I'm in at the time.
    I've run the Reconfigure Openbox command after my changes and I've also tried using the desktop names (eg: desktop 1 is 'Apps', desktop 3 is 'Web') in the configuration file but not joy.
    I'm I doing something wrong? Can anyone tell me if I'm missing something?
    Thanks in advance.

    I'm a happy camper Thanks moljac024!!
    and using B's tip to get an application's class (xprop |grep WM_CLASS) I got the class of Thunderbird (which is 'Thunderbird-bin') and got both of them working.
    Just for reference, in case it may help someone else, here is the code:
