Assigning Disks in a Cluster

Hi, Im new to NetApp and am using the Simulator to help my development.
I setup a 7mode simulator with no issues.
I have now setup a DataOnTap 8.1.0, two node cluster.  It has 2 shelves disk ID's are v4.xx and v5.xxx.
The v5.xxx disks are assigned to either aggregate or spare.
The v4.xxx disks are currently present but unassigned.  Under the 7mode simulator I can assign these disks with the "disk assign all" command.
This command dosent seem to work in the cluster mode.
rug-filer-clt: disk assign all
Error: "assign" is not a recognized command
rug-filer-clt:
How do I assign these unassigned disks to the cluster and how do I switch autoassign on ?
Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Hi, I too facing the above issue and yet to assign storage space disks. Therefore i used command storage disk assign –all true –node lambic-02 but it gets aborted lambic: cluster showNode                  Health  Eligibility--------------------- ------- ------------lambic-01             true    truelambic-02             true    true2 entries were displayed. lambic: storage disk assign Error: "assign" is not a recognized commandcan someone suggest me what needs to be checked and how do i fix it.kind regards, rakesh

    1. database1 and database2 are up.
    2. instance ASM1 from database is up and instance ASM2 from database2 is down (I don´t know why¿¿¿¿¿¿¿??????????).
    3. add a new disc from san storage to instance ASM1. At the end, a lot of errors show in screen due to  instance ASM2 was down.

Did you try to bring the U1 and it's associated ASM instance up while the other node is shutdown? Are you using Oracle clusterware?

As far as I remember, SC requires local boot disk.
Is it possible to use the SAN boot disk? Can this
configuration work being just not supported by SUN or
there is some technical limitation ?The rule for boot disks gos like this:
Any local storage device, supported by the base platform as a boot device, can be used as a boot device for the server in the cluster as well. A shared storage device cannot be used as a boot device for a server in a cluster. It is recommended to mirror the root disk. Multipathed boot is supported with Sun Cluster when the drivers associated with SAN 4.3 (or later) are used in conjunction with an appropriate storage device (i.e. the local disks on a SF v880 or a SAN connected fiber storage device).
So your boot disk can be in a SAN as long the base platform supports it as a boot disk and it is not configured as a shared lun in the SAN (i.e. visible to other nodes than the one that uses it as boot disk).
I am thinking of low price configuration with two
diskless X2100s + HBAs and SAN storage. Possible? You need to check the support matrix of the storage device you plan to use, if it is supported as a boot device for the X2100 + HBA. If the answer is yes, you just must make sure that this lun is only visible to that X2100.

  • One disk in failover cluster but needs multiple volumes

I made a dumb move and did my disk in MBR instead of GPT. Now I'm at 2.5TB but can only allocate 2TB because of the limitation.
So I have about 300GB available on a cluster disk but can't seem to figure out how to create a volume out of the unallocated space and add it to my file server cluster.
Is this possible? Here is a picture of what i'm talking about:

You will not be able to add a partition as it's own cluster disk. I would backup your data and convert your disk to GPT and then restore the data.

    Hi Gurus,

    Could somebody explain,

    Hi Saurabh,
What is the best way to have some shared data
within a cluster. This data needs to be in memory
only, no need for DB persistence. But it can be
upadted (in memory only) and updates should be
visible to any of the servers with in the cluster.
For example - I want to create a hashtable to be
shared within cluster and the hashtable can be
modified from time to time.Tangosol Coherence does just that:

It even supports the same Hashtable API!

  • Sun cluster quorum disk

    Hi,
I just want to know how to assign quorum disk under Sun cluster. Can I use LUN disk that is shared for both node as quorum disk and do I need to bring the disk first to vxvm control before using it as quorum disk? Appreciate any response/advise.
    Thanks.

No you don't need to bring the disk into VXVM control.
First run scdidadm -L from either node. This will give you a list of shared disk devices. Find one that is shared between the nodes and note its DID. ie d21
    scconf -a -q globaldev=d21
Once you have added a quorum disk you can set install mode to off.
    scconf -c -q installmodeoff
I would also recommend reading this:
    http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/816-3384/6m9lu6fig?q=sun+cluster+add+quorum+disk&a=view
    Then reset you quorum count.
    scconf -c -q reset

  • Error when adding a disk to Cluster Shared Volumes

When adding a disk to Cluster Shared Volumes via Failover Cluster Manager, I get a couple of errors.
Event ID 5145 in System Log:
While adding the disk ('Cluster Disk 1') to Cluster Shared Volumes, setting explicit snapshot diff area association for volume ('\\?\Volume{420e2cc4-4fb4-41be-afb1-65f2ee62457a}\') failed with error 'HrError(0x8004230d)'. The only supported software snapshot
diff area association for Cluster Shared Volumes is to self.
Cluster disk resource 'Cluster Disk 1' failed to delete a software snapshot.  The diff area on volume '\\?\Volume{420e2cc4-4fb4-41be-afb1-65f2ee62457a}\' could not be dissociated from volume '\\?\Volume{420e2cc4-4fb4-41be-afb1-65f2ee62457a}\'. This
may be caused by active snapshots. Cluster Shared Volumes requires that the software snapshot be located on the same disk.
Any ideas why I'm getting this error?  This disk was previously added as a CSV to different Windows failover cluster, if that matters.  Thanks.

    Hi,
As the disk was previously used as a CSV, I assume there is still data on it.
Please check if any VSS snapshot created on that disk. If so, delete them and re-add it as a CSV to see the result - a quick way is to backup important files and perform a re-format if you cannot confirm.

  • Server 2012 Failover Cluster No Disks available / iSCSI

    Hi All,
I am testing out the Failover Clustering on Windows Server 2012 with hopes of winding up with a clustered File Server once I am done.
I am starting with a single node in the cluster for testing purposes; I have connected to this cluster a single iSCSI LUN that is 100GB in size.
When I right click on Storage -> Disks  and then click 'Add Disk', I get No disks suitable for cluster disks were found.
I get this, even if I add a second server to the cluster, and connect it to the iSCSI drive as well.
    Any ideas?

For testing purpose you'd better spawn a set of VMs on a single physical Hyper-V host and use shared VHDX as a back clusterd storage. That would be both much easier and much faster then what you do. + it would be trivial move one of the VMs to another physical
host, shared VHDX to CSV on a shared storage and go from Test & Development to production :) See:
    Shared VHDX

For a pure iSCSI scenario you may try this step-by-step guide (just skip StarWind config as you do have a shared storage already with your SAN). See:

Hope this helped a bit :)
StarWind VSAN [Virtual SAN] clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.

  • SQL 2008 R2 Cluster | change Cluster Disks

    Hello,
We have a SQL cluster (for SharePoint 2010) consists of two nodes Windows server 2008 R2 & SQL 2008 r2.
The SQL cluster have MSDTC (Clustered) & SQL services, with total four disks:
    Quorum Disk
    MSDTC Disk
    Databases disk
    Logs disk.
Now the old SAN will be decommissioned and new LUNs have added to replace the our disks above. I managed to change Quorum & MSDTC. I used the below robocopy command to copy databases and logs with the same folder structure and permissions:
    robocopy t:\ l:\ /E /MIR /SEC /COPYALL /V
I stopped SQL services then swapped drive letters , when I start SQL services it starts without problems (using the new Disks).
But the issue is when I connect to SQL management studio, all databases are in suspect mode. I know there some SQL query to be run against each database , but this a production environment and I don't want to mess with it.
Is there any other way to change cluster disks of SQL cluster? or use the above method without getting into suspect mode?
    Thanks, Shehatovich

    Hello, Shehatovich
I you have copied the files while there were still online, that might have been the cause 'suspect' state of your databases.
I would suggest you to follow the steps:
Add the new disks to cluster, with validation in every single Cluster node (then cluster will be able to get the signature of the disks)
    Stop SQL Server service.
Copy the MDF and LDF to the new disks,
use the Detach and attach Method.  (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms187858.aspx)
After check tha your databases are online and consistent.
Stop SQL Server service again and remove the disks
    Hope it may help you...

  • Cannot add cluster disk on windows 2012

I have 2 servers connected to a shared storage array using Fibre Channel.  Currently there are 2 luns on the storage device.
From the Failover Cluster Manager, when I select “Add Disk” from Storage – Disks, both luns show up and I can add them without problems.  But if I choose to only
add one of them first (it doesn't make a difference which one is added first), then it will not allow adding the second one later.  I get a message: "No disks suitable for cluster disks were found. For diagnostic information about disks available to the
cluster, use Validate a Configuration Wizard to run Storage tests."
When I do add one (or both disks at the same time), they work just fine for failover clustering.
I can’t imagine this is by design. Is this a known/unknown issue, or is there something special that needs to be done?
    Thanks

Ok, no problem. I run the validation tests (Validate Cluster - Storage only) and I received the details shown below. I can clearly see that Cluster Validation tool does not find any disk suitable for 2012 cluster, and even I can see why (it is plain English).
Unfortunately this still does not explain how to fix the problem. Recommendations like "run Clear-ClusterDiskReservation PowerShell cmdlet to remove the Persistent Reservation from the disk" do not work - this discussion is available in another thread where
people having the same issue and no luck so far. I guess that I'm using old SAN (and I know that) that simply does not support SCSI-3 persistent reservation so those disks cannot be used in 2012 cluster. Oh well, will have to wait fro new SAN and then I can
    play again...

No disks were found on which to perform cluster validation tests. To correct this, review the following possible causes:
    * The disks are already clustered and currently Online in the cluster. When testing a working cluster, ensure that the disks that you want to test are Offline in the cluster.
    * The disks are unsuitable for clustering. Boot volumes, system volumes, disks used for paging or dump files, etc., are examples of disks unsuitable for clustering.
    * Review the "List Disks" test. Ensure that the disks you want to test are unmasked, that is, your masking or zoning does not prevent access to the disks. If the disks seem to be unmasked or zoned correctly but could not be tested, try restarting the servers
before running the validation tests again.
    * The cluster does not use shared storage. A cluster must use a hardware solution based either on shared storage or on replication between nodes. If your solution is based on replication between nodes, you do not need to rerun Storage tests. Instead, work
with the provider of your replication solution to ensure that replicated copies of the cluster configuration database can be maintained across the nodes.
    * The disks are Online in the cluster and are in maintenance mode. No disks were found on which to perform cluster validation tests.

  • Slow Disks After Cluster Creation

    Hi,
I have a Windows Server 2008R2 SP1 cluster, consisting of two VMWare virtual servers, which is experiencing very slow disk performance (~10mb/s when copying to or from any of the cluster disks). If I destroy the cluster and bring the disks online on a
standalone server I can get over 200mb/s.  The disks are presented as RDMs, with the two nodes on separate ESX hosts and the disks in Physical Compatibility mode.
Could anyone explain why disk performance could become so poor as soon as the cluster is created? All the tests in the cluster validation report passed.
Not sure if this helps, but I have also noticed that when I turn maintenance on for each of the disks in Failover Cluster Manager, their performance improves dramatically.
    Thanks

I have configured Cluster as below
    Number of nodes: 2
Quorum devices: one Quorum server, shared disks
