Assigning midi drum track to drummer track

Is it possible to take a midi drum track and assign it to drummer track?

  • Save custom drum settings for Drummer track?

Hi guys.  Wondering if there is a way to save the Drummer region settings from one project and use them in another project without manually setting things like complex, loud, fills, etc.  THanks.

"Save Drummer Presets" is a feature that is only available in Logic but not in GarageBand.  Here is screenshot with both GarageBand and Logic open. You can see that the Action Menu (the one with the gear icon) is not available in GarageBand.
The good news is (in case you use Logic and GarageBand), all the Drummer Prests you save in Logic are also available in the Presets Menu in GarageBand. They are stored in the the following directory:
    ~/Music/Audio Music Apps/Drummer/Presets/"Name of the Drummer"/.... .dpst
The presets are stored as XML files with the file extension .dpst.
If you have a Logic friend who can saved cool presets, you can copy his files into your Drummer folder and GarageBand can see them. If you more interested in a "science project", you can duplicate a dpst file, open it in BBEdit and edit your Preset numerically.
A lot of details and more information (from basic to more advanced) about GarageBand are found in my new manual "GarageBand X - How it Works", the only comprehensive manual available for GarageBand.
    Hope that helps

  • Separate Midi Drums To Different Tracks?

    Hi,
I have just programed my midi drums on an instrument track.
Is there way to separate the snare, kick drum to separate midi tracks other than manually doing so?
Thanks for your help in advance.
    Darren.

Make copies of your drum Instrument track (shift+return) - copy/option drag the regions to the copied tracks - select highest and lowest not in the Inspector of your regions - so kickdrum lowest/highest note C1/C1 - snare D1/D1 - and so on.
Even faster way is to go to the region menue in the Arrange->Split/seperate->separate different pitches (translated form my german menue)
every note will be split up into a new region so you'll have a region with kickdrums/snares and so on.

  • Editing Drummer tracks?

So far, I like the Drummer feature - bought the extra pack, have been playing around with arrangements - here's my question.  I'm putting together drum tracks for an album, and in one case, I need two bars of an eight-bar section to repeat - making that one section ten bars.  In any other drum editing program, and in the old version of Garageband, I could simply open editor, copy the two bars, and punch it in.  However, when I go to editor in the new version, it takes me back to the window with the virtual kit, the fill settings, etc. and I can't see the channel wav to just highlight, copy, and paste.  Did they take this out?  Can I really not edit any of the 8-bar sections in the Drummer feature?  If that capability has been removed, the feature is essentially worthless, and I can't believe that anyone at Apple wouldn't recognize this.  Help?  Anyone?  Am I just missing something really obvious?

Based on your question, it seems that you have a misconception of what a Drummer Region is.
A Drummer Region doesn NOT conatin any MIDI events
A Drummer Region does NOT contain an audio signal that you can view as a waveform
A Drummer Regions contains INSTRUCTIONS for a Drumm Pattern Generator (build into the Drummer Track.
When you edit a Drummer Region in the Drummer Editor, youedit the various instructions/parameters for the Drum Pattern Generator. Instead of placing exact notes for drum Kit Piece (Snare, Kick, HH, etc) the way you do it in a MIDI Region, here, you describe what to play in broader terns: Louder, less louder, more complex, less complexx, etc.
You have to make sure to fully understand to (different/new) concept behind the Drummer. Here is an exceprt from my book "GarageBand X - How it Works" that is now also available the Apple iBOok Store as an interactive multi-touch iBook.
You create a new Track, the Drummer Track ➊.
The Drummer Track contains special Regions, the Drummer Regions ➋.
The Regions contain the Drum Pattern, the instructions for the Pattern Generator what and how to play.
Each Drummer Region (the instructions) can be edited in the Drummer Editor ➌.
18 different Drum Kits ➍ are available in the Library Window ➎.
A Drum Kit includes style specific Drummer Presets ➏ that become available in the Drummer Editor ➌.
A Drum Kit also includes all the Plugins, including the Software Instrument Plugin "Drum Kit Designer" ➐.
The Plugins are hidden in GarageBand but their important parameters can be controlled via the Smart Controls Window ➑.
    Hope that helps

  • Trouble getting the Drummer Track to recognise rest notes

    Hi -
Having a frustrating time at the moment getting a Drummer Track to accurately follow another track and need some guidance.
I have a drum track that I've previously imported into Logic Pro from a BOSS DR-880 drum machine.
The midi data from the drum machine sits in a Software Instrument track with the East Bay+ drum patch applied to it.
It plays fine but has no soul, so I want to breathe life into it by getting a Logic Pro drummer to follow the drum machine track and use that instead.
This is where the frustration lies, as the Drummer Track is just not following the midi track accurately enough. The drum machine track utilises regular rest notes - accentuated beforehand with a kick/cymbal 'stab' - in both the verses and choruses, but try as I might I cannot get the drummer to recognise these rest notes or perform fills around them.
I've so far tried the following in an attempt to improve the situation:
    - Created Arrangement Markers for each section of the midi track - i.e. intro, verse, chorus, bridge etc...
    - In the drummer track editor, modified the settings for the above sections to try to get the drummer to accurately pick up the rest notes on the midi track
    - In the drummer track editor, enabled 'Follow' for kick and snare on the drummer track and pointed it to the midi track
    - In the midi track header, enabled it as a Groove Track and ticked the drummer track to follow the groove track
None of this tweaking is giving the desired result.
Yes - I can manually go in and adjust the drum track by converting it to midi and creating the rests, but then I've got to deal with a preceding fill that doesn't fit the rest note, meaning a lot of fiddling about and risk the flow of the Drummer Track that I wanted in the first place. I've also got a few more other songs to import from the drum machine that I know I'll have the same bother with.
Has anyone had similar experiences to this? How did you overcome them?
    Any advice or tips welcome.
    Thanks!

First, you are not going to be able to put a MIDI region on a Drummer track to have the computer drummer make it lifelike.  In fact, if you take a Drummer generated region, turn it into MIDI, try and make some edits, then turn it back to a Drummer region you will lose all your edits.  The Drummer plays what it plays.  Likewise, by telling the Drummer to follow the groove of your MIDI region, you are telling the Drummer to play its own pattern, but to match the kick and snare to the lifeless region.  That's only if you use a drummer region - doesn't work for MIDI.
If you want to add life to your existing MIDI you can use some of the humanize options in MIDI transform.  Or, you could take a pretty good feeling Drummer region, convert it to MIDI, make a groove template out of that, then apply that to your lifeless region.  Be prepared for a few notes to miss the GT grid and move way out of line.

  • Converting drummer to midi and split into separate tracks

The drummer app in logic pro is great. I can then convert a phrase into mdi and copy to my own track for further modifications. Also great. But is there an easy way to convert a drummer track into midi, and to split each part of the drum (hh, snare, kick etc) out into their own bespoke tracks? So that each part of the drum is then on its own track for futher processing and control.

Thanks to all for advice, tips and ideas. Just shows that there is no one way to do something in LPX.
Here is what I have found works for me, so that I can take a great groove from the drummer track, convert to midi (so that I can modify the drum part), split the kit components out to individual tracks, then ensure each kit part has its own channel strip so that each part can be fully managed independently:
The drummer track is great for brilliant drum parts. But to make your own edits you want to convert the drum part to a midi track.
    To this:
Highlight the drummer track and r/click Convert To Midi Region.
Create a new track, then copy the midi region above into this new track.
In the new midi track, r/click the midi region, then select Separate By Note Pitch.
This auto creates a new track for each drum part, but they all share the same channel strip, so changing volume on one changes it on all.
To put these kit components into separate trax, do this:
To move them into unique channel strips, create a new midi/software track for each drum part, then drag each part from the original split into each of the new tracks. They now have their own channel strip.
Delete the original drummer and channel split trax.
You know have full independent control over each drum part. Assign your required drum kit to these trax and head bang away.

  • MIDI Drums not syncing with tempo track automation

I created some tempo changes, basically subtle speed-ups etc, worked fine, recorded guitars and bass, made a rough mix, all sounded great.
Now I go back to do more recording and editing, and the MIDI drums won't speed up with the automation, thus putting it out of sync with the audio tracks that have been recorded to it. I've restarted etc, no luck. Anyone have any ideas what could have happened?

Maybe your Drum Machine doesn't accept Logic as it's MIDI master in terms of sync. There can only be one MIDI clock master. By default, it's Logic. Look if you Drum machine is set to slave!
But i must admit i never worked the chapter through in the Manual, since i didn't need it before. So i recommend looking there as well.

It escapes me the way to make definitive a midi drum mapped track. In other words I'd want to transform all mapped notes in real notes.

  • What would cause Logic to open MIDI drum tracks as separate GM tracks?

So this is a continuation of a question I posted in another thread (so some of you may recognize the topic), but I have narrowed my problem down to this:
When I load a Standard Midi File into Logic 9, all my drum tracks come up as separate tracks (by actual drum) as GM Device. So I have 11+ tracks for drums. One for kick, one for snare, one for...you get the point. This has happened for several files, so it's not limited to one. The tracks have no playback (unless I load QT synth, which sounds like an 80's video game).
I posted the file for a few people to DL and try and it loaded correctly for them! Drums are on ONE track and load a Logic drum set (not GM on separate tracks).
So the question is: Why is MY copy of Logic behaving this way and others are not? Is this a simple setting?
You can take a peak at some screen caps and the original journey here:

    Thanks,
    Scott

Thanks Bill. I guess the split tracks are half the problem. I was under the impression that those of you who loaded the file had the tracks combined and Logic loaded a drum set for them. So, when you loaded the file the drum tracks were NOT loaded into a GM instrument? Each drum track was a Logic Instrument? Still a little confused...
Thanks for the tip on glueing tracks together. I'm on it.
I will do this then create a new track, load a drum set, and move the midi data onto it. Still a work around, IMO, but a faster one!

  • Can't hear live track when playing midi drum track

This is a really dumb question. I've been away from Logic too long. I'm trying to monitor a live guitar track while I play a recorded midi drum beat. I can hear the midi track fine. And I can hear the live guitar track when the midi track is not playing. But as soon as I start playback, the live track goes silent even though the red record enable button is on and the levels show live guitar signal. It just doesn't make it to the output. If I actually record a region, I can hear it. But I don't want to record, I just want to practice with effects and a drum track.
I've done this before. What have I forgotten?

  • Drummer track Hi Hat sounds

I created a new Drummer track, and then opened up a new Drum Instrument with the identical drum set, Option Dragging the audio regions down to the new track to create MIDI regions. After comparing the Drummer track against the MIDI track, I noticed that the Open Hi Hat (A#1) key is being used as an alternate closed sound, actually triggering a closed hi hat sound.  When I look at it in the piano roll, I can hear the Open sample by hitting A# on my keyboard or clicking A#1 on the vertical keyboard on the edit page, but if I click on one of the A# notes in the edit window, I hear a closed hi hat.  I looked at the Event list for an event that would cut the Open sample short, but it isn't there.
    What's up with that?
    Jim

I also want to know how to fix this. I use the ride instead. I tried using the drum module sound but I cannot get the my audio interface to work (zoomR16) I connect through the output mono to the zoom I can see the light when I hit the pad but no sound from my headphone. I am using a dtx540

  • I've somehow disabled the New Drummer Track in LogicProX

As a new user of Logic Pro X, I've somehow disabled the New Drummer Track.  When I try to add a new drummer track, in the menu it is a lighter grey and not clickable. What did I do? How can I get it back?
When I have an audio track and select as a drummer track (say Sunset), then the picture of a drum set comes up and I can hear the sounds of each drum - but I can't add any loops, no bars of audio are automatically added.

I see skijumptoes had the answer already:

  • Drummer Track can not find the players and presets anymore, whats the problem?

When i open a Drummer Track, there are no players, no presets and no editing anymore possible.
After Installation of Logix Pro X everthing was runing maybe 2 weeks perfect, also the Drummer Track.
On my Mac Book Pro everything is running also without Problems.
Someone knows, what i can do ?
How is it possible, to make again the Installation of Logic Pro X from the App-Store?
I think, this would be a chance to overwrite the old Version, to finish the problem.
    Thanks

    Problem is finish.
After delete the folder: Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Logic/Drummer
    and reinstall everything was ok.

  • How do you set up midi input  on an inst track in logic.....

I have 2 controllers and I would like to be able to set it up where they can be playing 2 different sounds rather than both playing the same sounds. Im assuming that in logic you can set a particular track to recieve midi from 1 particuar channel rather than all, but I cant figure out how. When I change the midi channel on an inst track... it doesnt make a difference... for instance if my midi keyboard is transmitting on midi channel 7 but my logic inst track says midi channel 1, ( or anything other than 7) It still plays. Is there a way to make it where this inst track only recieves midi from 1 particular midi channel? (these controllers are usb btw, not sure if it matters)
    thanks,
    Dan

    Thx David !
I knew it had to be some hidden away checked or unchecked box somewhere. It didnt make sense that channel the midi channel wouldnt have any effect. thanks for pointing me to the solution.

  • Drummer track keeps cutting out

I create a drummer track and it works fine for about 10 seconds and then the sound drops out (whether playing manually or playing back regions). If I change the drummer it will go through the same process. Any ideas? Thank you.

No.. it wont be that then....
So next question... Are you using an external audio interface? If so which and are its drivers fully Mavericks compatible?
Also, did you install and are running.. the additional content to the system drive or have you moved it to an external drive? If you installed or moved to an external drive.. what type is it? USB2, USB3, FW or TBolt? What speed does it rotate at  and is it an energy saving(Green) drive?
Finally, if you left it all on the system drive, which type of system drive are you using? Mechanical, Hybrid(Fusion) or SSD and how much RAM do you have installed?
