Assigning user documents to second hard drive

I have a brand new imac27 with the 256 SSD and the 2 TB hard drive  and i want all my phjotos, music and other docs to go to the 2tb drive. when saving files they go to the defualt location under my user name on my ssd drive can i make the defualt location the 2TB drive for all the items mentioned above?

Each app has different ways of doing that. Launch them and peruse their help files.

  • Mover user file to second hard drive

I have a new iMac with a SSD on which applications are loaded, and everthing else is there by default.  But I wanto store music, documents, photos, etc on the second hard drive.  Can I just drag the "user" file to the second hard drive, since that's the file that contains docs, photos, etc?

Yes, but if you want to use it as something other than a backup, you also need to open the Accounts pane of System Preferences, control-click your account, and change the home folder path. This will look like /Volumes/volumename/foldername/ when changed.

  • Migrating documents to second Hard Drive

I bought a new internal hard drive and would like to keep the original drive as a start up drive with all the applications, and migrate all my documents to the new or second hard drive.
At first I thought it would be as simple as copying all the document folders over to the new hard drive. But, then I started wondering about folder structure and the user structure.
So, I'm wondering if there is a protocol for what I want to do? Maybe a link to instructions?
    Thanks

I'm running OSX 10.5.8 (Mac Pro)

Not to worry. Just drag & drop the folders onto the new drive. Just as a precaution, select a few files with different apps & open the files to ensure they open. Then you can drag the corresponding folders on your old drive to the Trash. Shouldn't be a problem.
Do you have another HD, either internal or external, that you use to backup all your files? You should.

  • How do I set up a user on the second hard drive

    Hi all,
    I recently bought a 2x500gb mac mini.
When you get the machine, one HD has OSXLion Installed and the other HD is empty.
What I want to do is set up a user (i.e. desktop, documents, downloads etc etc) on the empty HD and password protect it.
In other words I want my family to have all thier user profiles on one HD and have my work user profile on the other HD.
Is this possible without installing a whole new OSX Lion on the other drive?
    Thanks in advance!
    Ray

After creating the account, open the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences, unlock it, control-click that account, choose Advanced Options, and change its home folder path. Alternatively, copy the folder in the Finder and use the Terminal to replace its existing home folder with a symlink to the desired location.

  • Hello, I have a G5 PPC. I want to install a copy of Entourage on the second hard drive. Can I do that or will it create problems for the processor?

    Hi everyone
I had a very old intel iMac from late 2006 which was dying now dead. I just managed to copy the Entourage folder onto an external hard drive before the iMac gave up the ghost. But I could not open the Entourage copy on the G5 PPC. each time i tried to do so the PPC copy of Entourage would open instead.I have emails on the PPC copy and do not want to lose them. I was wondering if it would be possible to install another copy of Entourage on the second hard drive? I was hoping that by doing that I could access the information from the iMac which has been copied to an external hard drive.
Any help would be very very welcome.

I don't think MS lets you install Entourage outside of an active system folder. However, you can install a fresh copy of Entourage on the G5's hard drive (if you have Office 2008 or lower), then use Entrouge's Import command to move the data files from the old hard drive.
We're done this several times as we've upgraded either computers or Entourage.
However, I think that, before you act, you should also ask in Microsoft's user forums here:
    Office for Mac forums
They are excellent and often an employee of their Macintosh unit will assist in answering.

Here are the specs for your HP TouchSmart 320-1130a Desktop Computer. No, you can't install a second hard drive in this computer. The HP TouchSmart and All-in-One computers have more in common with laptops than they do with desktops.

    Hi,
The right part number for the hard drive kit is 681976-001. The support website for the laptop is on HP Sweden so run the part number on google.co.uk (or your Swedish). I have found the cheapest on us amazon for $38 or £42.

  • Can I install second hard drive on PC?

Hi. I just wondered whether I can install a second hard drive on my PC.
The present Sata hard drive has 640 GB capacity.
If there is a spare port for a second hard drive, is there a maximum capcity limit?
And would any make of Sata 3.5" hard drive be suitable? I would be grateful for any advice.
    Thanks,

  • Add a Second Hard Drive to a Pavilion 500-314 Desktop

I have just purchased a Pavilion 500-314 desktop and desire to add a second SATA hard drive from the computer it is replacing.  When I open the case I find four SATA connections but nowhere to physically mount the second hard drive.  The drive bay is large and basically empty with the included hard drive mounted to the drive bay cage.  There are no slots for additional drives.  When I called HP I was told this chassis supports only one drive even though it has four SATA connectors on the motherboard.  Is there an adapter that can be purchased to create additional slots or am I out of luck with additional internal drives?

    Hi,
Few weeks back, one user decided to go to a hardware store to buy brackets himself and problem solved. You may want to follow his method.

  • ADD A SECOND HARD DRIVE FOR WINDOWS

    Hi Folks
I am a relatively new Mac user. My MacPro is my first Mac. So far, after 23 years on a PC, I am absolutely in heaven. I think my question may be very basic, but I like to ask before I jump.
I have purchased a second hard drive and it is my intention to install it and run Windows on it. I want to keep on using some of the Windows applications that I have. I purchased the HD from Mac Mall and yesterday I pyhsically located it in it place in the case. I did not run any kind of installation routine, I just plugged it in. I did get a message, but I told the computer to ignore the drive for now.
I also have Parallels. I am not sure if I even need that if I have a seperate drive. So, now you are getting an idea of my question. What do I do next?
Can someone walk me through the installation of that second drive, coach me on whether or not I even need Parallels, and get me to the point where I can install Windows on the new drive?
    I sure would appreciate it?

Download Windows 7 64-bit free from MS.
    Pull your OS X drive.
Boot from the DVD you burned from the ISO of Windows 7 RC.
    Install as normal.
If you later want to run Windows side by side inside OS X then you would need Parallels or something.
Windows will find drivers for most things and treat it as you did on PC.
For OS X, I recommend this book:

  • Can you add a second hard drive

Just wondering. what is the exact mobo used in the imac 20inch
is there an extra sata port. would like to add an extension to the ports on the back and be able to add a second hard drive at the speeds that sata allows

No, you can't add another hard drive. There isn't an extra SATA port because the Apple Engineers had to squeeze everything in as close as possible to make the iMac this small and thin. The only user-serviceable/upgradeable part of the iMac is the Memory. For other changes, an Apple Authorized Service Provider has to open up your computer. Another alternative could be a USB 2.0 or FireWire External Hard drive, which would work at up to 500 Mbits/sec.

  • Second hard drive

I'd like to install a second hard drive in my work Mac (Power Mac G5 2ghz Dual 8gb ram) and our IT department have given me a quote for a Maxtor Diamondmax 22 1TB 7200rpm sata 32mb (ROHS). Any one have thoughts on whether this drive is compatible and if it's any good? If the answer is no, then do you have any recommendations please.

    Hi-
Not much info on the DiamondMax 22, especially in Mac circles. It is touted as an inexpensive, mainstream type of drive. Possibly a repackaged Seagate 7200.11???? Also, not a bad drive, but Seagate has had firmware problems, and some performance problems in Macs.....
Historically, the Maxtors have been good drives, with the old MaxLine III as one of the original hotrods among the SATA drives. Noisy, but fast.......
Seagate/Maxtor drives have a 1.5Gb/s limiter jumper that needs to be placed for use in a G5. They don't auto-negotiate like Western Digital and Hitachi.
Currently, Samsung, Western Digital, and Hitachi are enjoying good press in Mac circles. Latest drives are very fast, solid in performance, and have shown good compatibility characteristics.
The Samsung F1, the WD AAKS, and the Hitachi 7K and A7K series are all proven performers.
One feature, SSC (Spread Spectrum Clocking), of SATA drives, can be a problem with the onboard controller of the G5. If the drive has SSC enabled by default, often, the only way top disable is to do so on a PC. I was unable to find any information on the status of SSC and the Maxtor.
This point is of concern, and needs verification.
Xlr8yourmac Drive Data base contains good info from users of various drives.

  • Possible to install second hard drive in Pavillion p6110f

    Hi,
Your PC has a hard drive cage that will accomodate two drives.  This HP How-to document starting at Removing a Drive a hard drive will show you the process for removing the hard drive cage.
If you still want to use the Expansion Bay then you will need a 5.25" to 3.5" adapter bracket. NewEgg.com would carry such a bracket.  You will also need a SATA data cable.  This HP How-to article will give you an idea on how to use the Expansion Bay for a 5.25" device.  Check up by the existing optical drinve for a spare SATA power connector.  If one is not available then you will need to use a SATA power splitter.
