Assistance with DNS - RFC 1918 response from internet

Hello - I recently noticed some errors in my DNS log. I looked into the errors and it seems that I do not have any empty zones setup. Everything is right in SA, however it does not seem to be correct in the actual config. files. The following is a sample of my log. Does anyone have an idea what's going on/what i need to do to resolve this issue. Any help is greatly appreciated.

No, you're still not (quite) getting it.
The addresses in the log are from computers in our network
You mean the client address, right? not the address of the host that was being looked up.
. If I am reading the log right, our clients are querying a root server when they should be querying the local DNS
No, that's not what it's saying.
Given the log line:
15-Mar-2010 09:19:49.130 client 192.168.89.254#3054: view com.apple.ServerAdmin.DNS.public: RFC 1918 response from Internet for 10.141.168.192.in-addr.arpa
This means that the client (on your network) at 192.168.89.254 asked your server for the reverse DNS lookup for 192.168.141.10.
Since your server doesn't know anything about 192.168.141.10 it queried the root server and got back an RFC1918 response (because no public server should ever respond to a query for a 192.168.x.x address).
The point is that your server queried the root server, not the client on the network. This is exactly the same as if the client requested a name lookup for a domain that the server didn't know about - it would query the root servers to find out where to get the answer. At no point, though, does the client query the root server and, indeed, since you're seeing this log entry it means the client is correctly configured.
I have no idea where to troubleshoot,
What's to troubleshoot? As long as you don't expect to be authoritative for 192.168.141.x there's no issue here (other than maybe why the client requested that address in the first place). In short, this kind of thing happens all the time and I wouldn't think twice about it as long as 192.168.141.x is not one of your networks. If it is then clearly your machine isn't setup to handle that zone which might be something to address. You haven't yet stated whether you expect to resolve 192.168.141.x addresses or not.

What are you trying to do?
The simplest is to draw a line (at your firewall) between the public DNS domain and the public network, your private DNS and private IP addresses, and use NAT to bridge that line. Basically leave your external DNS names alone, and use NAT to go from your public IP address to your internal IP address. Set up a parallel DNS inside using a subdomain of your registered domain, a different registered domain, or a made-up domain.
Then (for details) [read this|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1436] for more details.
And get out of 192.168.0.0/16, and over into 172.16.0.0/12 or 10.0.0.0/8 while you're setting stuff up. Get into a different subnet, and well clear of 192.168.0.0/16 that everybody uses. That change makes (future) VPN routing easier going forward.

  • Assistance with poor speeds since switching from P...

    Hi all,
New BT customer looking for some help.
I was previously with Plusnet, and receiving 37mbit download, and a lowly 2mbit upload.
I recently switched to Infinity 2 (6th June), and have allowed for the initial settling in period.
It was quoted to me by the lady in sales at the time:
    Roxy: 49.4Mb download
    Roxy: 10.9Mb upload Now
Roxy: As long as it states that and showns Infinity, the above confirmed speed will be the speed you get with this package
Having run the BT speed test, following the instructions implicitly I am actually getting:-
    30Mb download
    5.6Mb upload
I get similar speeds from other independant speed test sites.
It's clear to me something is wrong, either my IP profile is capped in the region of 30Mb or this is all my line can accept once my upload speed is increased, can someone investigate this please as the 49.4 originally quoted is clearly not being received? Evidently from previous fibre usage with a different supplier my line is capable of at least 37Mb download and I presumed that Inifinty 2 would push this further, which is the reason I switched.
    Many thanks for any assistance,
    Chris.

  • No response from web server after a process ran for 1-2 minutes

    Hi,
I have a proven pl/sql code, it took about 2+ minutes to complete in sqlplus.
But when I created a button to process the exactly same code in APex application, the process runs about 2 minutes and
applications bombs with this msg "No Response from web server".
Has anyone gotton this msg before?
    Thanks,
    Julie

    Hi Julie,
See this thread - it may had some extra considerations for you: OHS Webserver Timeout for long running requests
Do you know if your error message is returned at a fixed time each time? You could test this by creating a procedure that sleeps for X amount of time and then vary X to see if you can find a cutoff point for losing the connection.
Also - I assume that your process keeps running on the database, despite the webserver connection being lost?
If it's not a limitation in your httpd.conf file (the default is 5 mins as others have pointed out), then perhaps your network colleagues have set something in your network configuration to kill connections longer than a certain period of time? This is what happened in my case.
    Hope this helps.

  • Accessing Time Capsule from Internet

    Hi,
I have a problem to acess my TC with MacBook Air or iPad from Internet.
TC (Version 7.6.3) is connected to Internet with PPPoE connection. How to configure TC to can acess from outside? Is it necessary to define a port?
    Please advise, thank you.
    best regards
    Robert

Do I have to configure BTMM on my MacBook to?
If I am on a remote place, I can access TC using Air Port program, right?
Yes, there are details on setting up BTMM on the Mac..
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4907
There is plenty of angst involved of course..
    See
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3699096?start=0&tstart=0
For all kinds of issues that crop up.
Airport utility may not work.. in fact it is unlikely to since it is using a port not forwarded.
You are accessing files.. nothing else.
iPAd: There is a software (GoodReader) able to acess with AFP, but when I enter my IP adress (found over whatsmyip.com) as URL-Adress it doesnt work. It only works in WLAN inside with lokal IP adress. Any more hits??
    Thank you.
As stated I am ipadless.. and not able to test any setup of any software.. you must google yourself.
Are you entering the address correctly.. ie
    AFP://publicIPaddress
Do you have the sharing disk over WAN checked in the airport utility? See on the disks page of the utility. You will not be able to access it without that..
It is also a chance that enabling BTMM could stop direct access such as you are attempting with the ipad from working. Turn off BTMM before you start trying to access with ipad. It is totally different.. !!

  • Received response from host (router IP address) with invalid source port 32784

I replaced my old wireless router with a Cisco Linksys E4200, running firmware version 1.0.02 build 13  May 24, 2011.  About once a minute the router sends an unsolicited DNS message to the IPV4 multicast address 01:00:5e:00:00:fb with a destination IP address of 224.0.0.251.  The unsolicited message is a DNS response with source port 32784, transaction ID 0, flags 0x8400 (standard query response, no error), questions 0, answer RRs 2, authority RRs 0 and additional RRs 1.  The two answers both relate to the router itself: one has Name Cisco18738.local, type A (host address), class 1 (IN), cache flush true, time to live 1 minute, data length 4, and the address of the router.  The other is the reverse of the same address.  The additional record is for Cisco18738.local, type NSEC, class IN, cache flush true, time to live 1 minute, data length 5, next domain name Cisco18738.local, RR type A (host address).
When my desktop computer receives these messages it logs an error, for example: "Jun 23 07:39:22 sauterws02 avahi-daemon[1067]: Received response from host 10.146.9.1 with invalid source port 32784 on interface 'eth0.0'"  The 10.146.9.1 is the router's IP address.  I also see these messages on the wireless link from my laptop.
I suppose the E4200 is generating these DNS messages in a misguided attempt to make sure there is no old information about its name.  Is there a way to turn them off?  If not, is there a way to report this to Cisco as a bug?
    Solved!

    2. From the internet draft: "Multicast DNS implementations MUST

Thank you for the reference.  For the sake of others who may read this thread, the current draft of multicast DNS is at http://www.ietf.org/id/draft-cheshire-dnsext-multicastdns-14.txt.
Here is the whole paragraph from which you quoted, from section 6 (Responding): "The source UDP port in all Multicast DNS Responses MUST be 5353 (the well-known port assigned to mDNS). Multicast DNS implementations MUST silently ignore any Multicast DNS Responses they receive where the source UDP port is not 5353."
Thus, it appears that there are two errors here: the Cisco E4200 is not using 5353 as the source port, and the logger is not silently ignoring it.
The message appears to be an announcement rather than an actual response to a query.  In section 8.3 (Announcing) I found this paragraph: "A Multicast DNS Responder MUST NOT send announcements in the absence of information that its network connectivity may have changed in some relevant way. In particular, a Multicast DNS Responder MUST NOT send regular periodic announcements as a matter of course."  Thus, it appears that there are three errors here.

  • NB200-13J - No response from DNS server and Gateway

    Hi
I have netbook NB200-13J with XP SP3. Its impossible to connect in the internet wireless and the error messages are
THERE IS NO RESPONSE FROM DNS SERVER
THERE IS NO RESPONSE FROM DEFAULT GATEWAY
The connection with ethernet cable is ok withe the reltek adpter also the wirless adpter atheros ar9285 is enble, working properly and the signal from the modem router is strong.

    Hi abk55,
From which program you receive this error message?
Have you tried another browser, e. g. Firefox or Opera?
I assume it has something to do with your WLAN card or WLAN settings if the LAN cable works properly. So you should try updating the WLAN driver from the Toshiba website.
Try also to disable the MAC address filter and use another encryption.

    Hi,
Request and Response should be part of same agreement. I hope you are not confused between Acknowledgement and Response. Acknowledgement can be received in the same session (sync mode) but Response will always come in a different session and will be treated as a different document. If, for request, party A is initiator and B is responder then for response party B will be initiator and party A will be responder (as Requset and Response are two docs in case of Custom Document)

  • With firefox, how do I bookmark a new page into folder contained in From Internet Explorer?

i imported IE favorites into firefox bookmarks. my IE favorites contained many folders with different categoties of information......eg., folders for car repair, investments, etc. now that i am using firefox, how do i
bookmark a new page into one of the existing IE favorite folders? I have tried every option I could think of using the options shown when i click bookmark this page.......i am getting as far as FROM INTERNET EXPLORER, but i can't seem to find a way to reach one of the sub-folders within the FROM INTERNET EXPLORER folder? also, nothing is happening when i click on the star symbol to the right of the address space?

thanks for the suggestion....sounds good to Old Goofy! Before your response was received, I continued to fiddle with the popup box that appears when you click the "bookmark this page". in my fiddling, i noticed that at least once, a litlle small solid triangle appeared just before From IE....I clicked on that little triangle and voila, there were all my sub-folders under the main IE folder!!! Nowhere in all the old posted Firefox support had I seen I clear illustration of doing this......probably I missed it or I'm just a dumbie?
Meanwhile, if anyone is having all kinds of strange problems with computer, and no browsers including IE, with the exception of Firefox, are working properly, if you have Norton Security on your computer and it al;so is not working properly, UNINSTALL NORTON!!!!!!!!!!! That was my situation, to the extent HP free support was going to help me wipe the drive and try to put the computer back "as new", but using a different security program!!!!!

    hi,
Map Rfc.response to the File; hence rfc sender adapter and file receiver adapter..one sender n 1 receiver.Remember:
      1. In the report that makes the call to XI , make sure that you use call RFC in a background task.
      2. Make sure you use Commit Work at the end of the report.

If there are problems with importing the IE Favorites in Firefox then export the favorites in IE to an HTML file and import that file in the Firefox Bookmarks Manager.
If you do not have the menu bar in IE then right-click the toolbar at the top to enable the Menu Bar.
*Export the favorites in IE to an HTML file (bookmarks.html):<br>File > Import and Export
*Import the HTML file in Firefox:<br>Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Import Bookmarks from HTML

  • Enable responses from 2 separate internet connections on the same system

    Hello List
I am hoping one of the network gurus here can help me out. I've spent quite a few hours trawling these forums and others online to try to find the answer to my question, but success has not been forthcoming.
My situation is this. I have a system that functions as a server that is connected to two separate internet connections. The G5 tower is hooked up to each via Ethernet. Each connection has a manually configured connection with a fixed IP. The gateways for each are using different IP ranges, the IP for en0 is 10.0.1.59 and en2's IP is 192.168.1.145. They each have different gateways configured as well, 10.0.1.1 and 192.168.1.1 respectively. 192.168.1.145 is the DMZ system for that internet connection. Here is the default entry in the system's routing table:
Destination Gateway Flags Refs Use Netif Expire
    default 10.0.1.1 UGSc 4 8 en0
I need both interfaces to reply to requests to their public IPs backthrough the correct gateway and not the default gateway. This is because of bandwidth constraints and the need to perform nightly backups of substantial amounts of data from our business hour VOIP connection, but allow the existing default gateway to remain first in the network service order list.
I have thus far tried the following based on what I could learn from this and other forums across the Web. I have enabled forwarding with the following command:
    sudo sysctl -w net.inet.ip.forwarding=1
Then I have applied a fwd rule to ipfw that purports to route requests made to the en2 local address back through the correct gateway:
sudo ipfw add fwd 192.168.1.1 ip from 192.168.1.145 to not 192.168.1.145 out
However, this does not work and there is no response from en2 gateway when trying to access the system from that gateway's public IP.
Can anyone see something obvious that I'm missing or point me at an online resource that will let me figure out how to get this working?
    Many thanks in advance.

I sounds like what you need is a static route to the IP address of whatever is on the other end of the Retrospect request. The command would look something like this:
sudo route -n add -host host_address -gateway router_address
where host_address is the IP address of whatever the Retrospect request is going to, and router_address is the gateway you want it to go out of.
A caveat here is that the route entry does not survive a reboot, so you'd want to create a startup item, or preferably a launch daemon to do this for you automatically on startup.

Then I have applied a fwd rule to ipfw that purports to route requests made to the en2 local address back through the correct gateway:
sudo ipfw add fwd 192.168.1.1 ip from 192.168.1.145 to not 192.168.1.145 out
However, this does not work and there is no response from the en2 gateway when trying to access the system from that gateway's public IP.

  • Response from RFC as Outbuund interface for other system

I have scenario RFC -> XI -> RFC
Is it possbile to get Response from receiver rfc, perform  mapping and send to other system without BPM?

    Hi Denis
Certainly. You can do that without BPM.
Please take help from the following links. (are for RFC->XI->SOAP scenarios, but you may well replace the receiver system (SOAP) with RFC.)

Feel free to get back for more clarifications.

    Check USB connections
If there’s an issue with the USB port, cable, dock, or hub, or if the device becomes disconnected during restore, try troubleshooting the USB connection, then troubleshooting your security software.
    Common errors: 13, 14, 1600-1629, 1643-1650, 2000-2009, 4000, 4005, 4013, 4014, 4016, “invalid response”, and being prompted to restore again after a restore completes.
To narrow down the issue, you can also change up your hardware:
    Use another USB cable.
Plug your cable into a different USB port on your computer.
Try a different dock connector (or no dock).
Add (or remove) a USB hub between your device and computer.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, with no routers, hubs, or switches.
If you see your error after changing your USB connections, continue to the next section to troubleshoot your hardware.
