Associating a lighweight AP to a specific WLC
Hello All,
I'm new to WLCs but I have a question related to association. At the present, we have two WLCs (5508). There are a total of 84 LAPs (1242AG). One controller is configured as the master controller in which all our APs associate to. It's currently running software version 7.0.116.0 and some of our BYODs using Windows 8 are unable to connect to the wireless. The fix for this is to upgrade the software of the WLC so that the LAPs can obtain the update to solve this problem. Simple! However, before rolling this out into the production wireless network, I would like to test it out on our second WLC which has no LAP associations, a test WLAN configured, and a newer software image loaded (7.4.100.0). I have a spare LAP that was previously associated with the master controller running the same software version (7.0.116.0). What I'm looking to do is associate this LAP to the 2nd WLC instead of the master so that I can ensure that the LAP gets the newest software. Then, I would like to test a Windows 8 device to make sure it connects.
So far, I have done the following:
1. Disabled the 1st WLC from using Master Controller Mode and rebooted AP - result was unsuccessful; still associated to 1st WLC
2. Reset LAP configuration excluding static IP info and reset AP - result was unsuccessful; still associated to 1st WLC
3. Compared config for both WLC but since I'm new to these devices, I'm not sure what needs to be configured/changed.
Can someone please help me?
Is the mobility up between the two WLCs? Also AP fallback needs to be enabled. On the AP, make sure you change the high availability to point to the WLC hostname (case sensitive) and the IP address.
That should do it. You can also console I to the ap and see what the ap is doing. In the console you also can issue: capwap ap controller IP address

Directing an AP to a specific WLC
We have recently implemented a N+N controller configuration. I expected to configure the test APs High Availability option with a primary controller of the new WLC and secondary as the current production WLC, then reset the test AP to have it join the new controller. I'm monitoring the test AP console messages during reboot to see if there is a message indicating it's trying to join the new controller. It seems the test AP, which previously has joined the production AP, makes no attempt to use the pre-configured primary/secondary controllers, it goes directly to the production controller.
The goal is the verify APs will join the controller before making changes to DHCP with option 43. Am it going about this in the correct manner?
Thank youI agree, AP must join 10.233.0.6. Here's some of the console messages from the AP once it reboots, showing the first join request. This is why I say the AP makes no attempt to use the primary controller option.

Limiting access points joining a specific WLC
Hello Cisco Forum Team!
I am currently installing a new WLC in a VLAN/IP segment that already has WLCs configured and access points registered. I do not want existing ap's on this VLAN to join this new WLC. Which is the best way to limit ap's joining this new WLC?
I am thinking of some sort of AP authorization list but by IP address instead of MAC address due to the high amount of ap's currently registred on the existing WLCs (approx. 300 ap's).
Thanks in advanced for your support!AP authorization list would work but you have to use MAC address & cannot use IP address for that. Once you enable AP authorization you can add AP mac to the list like below using CLI.
(5508-1) >config auth-list add mic <AP1 mac>
(5508-1) >config auth-list add mic <AP2 mac>
(5508-1) >config auth-list add mic <APn mac>

Associating one or more roles with specific Tabs or containers?
We have a basic portal with servel tabs. The goal is to create a group/role that has access to a given tab and all others would not have access. A simplistic example is two tabs, one for Developers and one for Testers. Testers may not access the developer tab nor can developers acess the tester tab.
Any thoughts on how to do this?
(Sorry, standard story, tossed in to this task with minimal support, no time etc... Thanks!)Hi,
Unfortunately I already tried all kinds of re-installs (the full list is in my original message). The only one remaining is the reinstall of Windows 8 itself, which I would really like to avoid.
What I find really strange is the time it takes for the above error message to appear. It's like one hour or even more (never measured exactly, I left the computer running).
What kind of a timeout is that? I would expect that, if ports are really used by some other application, I get the message in less than a minute (seconds, actually). To me this looks like the emulator itself for some reason believes there's a problem with
some port while in reality there isn't.
I'll eventually contact Microsoft Support, thanks for the suggestion.

Multiple WLC and AP secondary config
Hi all, we have 2 WLC, each licensed for 12 AP's. Here is the issue, we will have up to 20 Ap in our enviroment. No problem getting each AP assigned to a primary controller. My question is assinging an AP to a secondary. If I assign 10 AP's to each as a primary, and then have each assigned to the other controller as a secondary, in the event we lose 1 controller the other will now have 20 AP's associating with it. How does the WLC handle this situation? Just accept the first 2 requests then ignore all the other 8 request?
Hi Jeffrey,
Just to add a note to the great tips from Dan and Leo (+5 points each guys!)
One of the recommended designs for WLC/AP failover and redundancy is referred to as the "n+1" rule. So in your design you would add a third WLC that had no AP's associated to it. It would be licensed for either 12 or 25 AP's. 12 in case one of your WLC's fails or 25 in case both active WLC's fail :)

Changed mime type associations !
I recently installed gimp, and now when I open any downloaded pdf files, they are opened in gimp.
Files previously downloaded and saved are however opened in 'evince'. I use open-box, Chromium, Rox-filer and evince, as DE, browser, file-manager and document viewer respectively.
I searched the wiki and found two entries that I thought might help, Default Applications and Custom file associations, I've tried both user specific options in these pages, here are the files I created:-
[bance@archbox ~]$ cat .local/share/applications/defaults.list
[Default Applications]
pdf=evince.desktop
[bance@archbox ~]$ cat .local/share/applications/evince.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Name=Evince
Exec=/usr/bin/evince
MimeType=application/x-evince
Icon=evince
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=DocumentViewer
Comment=
Neither of these has worked, do the files look ok? Have I made a mistake somewhere?
OK whilst writing this post, I noticed that I have a file /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache, It contains a list of mime type associations, would editing this work?
TIA Steveyou need!! the inode/directory setting in the mimetype list. That's what chromium reads to autopen your file manager.
Make sure it matches the .desktop file appropriate for your file manager. In the case of spacefm, it is not spacefm.desktop as you might expect, it is spacefm-folder-handler.desktop.
Check your .desktop files for your fm.
If you're still having trouble, you might want to post your mimeapps.list
I noticed in post1 you were using defaults.list instead. Reading the wiki is not super clear on this, but since I downloaded the pkg 'mimeo' I used mimeapps.list instead.
I assume you read the file extension portion of the chromium part of the wiki:

Hello Forum Team!
Wich is the best way to filter out unwanted ap's to join a specific WLC? For example, I have a WLC 5508 cluster with four ap's already joined and registered but other surrounding ap's from other WLC clusters are starting to register with this new cluster. Which is the best way to prevent these ap's to register with this new WLC cluster? MAC address filter list or ap authorization list?
Thanks in advanced for your great support!Hi Nephtali,
1. You can use the Authorize AP's against AAA function to make sure that all the AP's registering to your WLC are authorized AP's of the network. By enabling this feature, only those AP's whose mac-addresses are present in the authorization list, will be able to register to the WLC.

Will the 2504 WLC internal DHCP give IP addresses to clients?
Is there a way to configure the 2504 WLC so that its internal DHCP only services the LAPs?
I don't want the controller to give out IP addressed to wireless clients.
ThanksNo.
DHCP on the WLC is never intended to offer DHCP services to any "wired" side devices, which includes your APs. These DHCP pools are specifically to hand addresses out to wireless clients attached to WLANs of the specific WLC it is configured on. Even then, unless you absolutely cannot offer DHCP somewhere else, DHCP on the WLC is not a suggested practice.

How to Block LAP1242 AG connect WLC
Hi Friends,
Did you meet this issues that the remote site (US) AP 1242 always connect to our site(ASIA) WLC 5508 (maybe some DHCP configure caused when troubleshooting, right nowDHCP back to normal. only enable vendor and option 43 for 1262 and 3602, no option 43 for 1242), but now we cannot block these AP1242 to join our site 5508 WLC. even I reset the 1242 AP to default configure from WLC GUI and CLI , but it's still there in a mins.
Since in our site Core SW, Router cannot find these AP mac address, and also those AP not the IP address in the WLC GUI and CLI . SO we don't know where it is? can you pls help?Well that is how to block APs from joining:). If you know these APs have to join a specific WLC, then create a dhcp option 43 for these APs or temporarily create a DNS entry for these APs to join the WLC it is suppose to. You can't just block these APs from joining if you have mo ility between the WLCs and or if your using option 43 and or DNS that helps these APs join the WLC. So now what your stuck with is making these join the right WLC. When you do that, then remove all your option 43 from dhcp and disable the DNS so none of the APs will be able to join the wrong WLC.

Update SNMP to v3 on WLCs. Update also required on WCS?
Hi all,
I need to update the SNMP version on our WLCs to v3, using MD5 and aes128. This looks easy enough to do:
Management > SNMP > SNMP v3 users > new
From here i can add a new user (ie SNMPV3) and set MD5 and aes128 passwords. I will update our monitoring software to match the SNMP version and credentils, and our monitoring of the WLCs will then run under SNMP v3.
However, we also use a WCS to manage the WLCs (we use templates for wireless key changes etc)
I suspect i will need to update the SNMP details on here too, PER WLC ?
Configure > Controllers > (IP of specific WLC) > Properties > SNMP Properties
Within here i believe i need to add the MATCHING SNMPv3 credentials that i added to the WLC in queston, presumably so the WCS can still talk to the WLC..? Is this correct, or is there more than this that is required?
I also assume that any SNMP update on the WLCs and WCS will NOT impact the APs, because they chat to the WLCs via LWAPP and *not* SNMP...?
Thoughts appreciated,
Thanks in advance!You are quite correct. You will need to update the v3 user on the WCS per WLC. And yes, it will not affect the AP.
Cheers,
Steve

WCS msg - WLC "containing" valid AP?
Hi All,
I often see this message from WCS (v6).
AP 'LAP01' is being contained. This is due to rogue device spoofing AP 'LAP01' BSSID or targetting AP 'LAP01' BSSID. - Controller Name: WLC1
Where LAP01 is actaully an AP associated with WLC1. Why would the WLC try and contain one of its own AP's?
Or am i reading the message incorrectly?
Seems to happen on a number of WLC's and seemingly random AP's.
RLDP is disabled and the auto contain options are disabled.
Any ideas?Are all of your WLCs in the same Mobility Group?
Sometimes the best way to troubleshoot these cryptic messages is to just open a TAC case and ask. -
WLC 2504 Connectivity Problems
This is a tricky one.
I installed a 2504 WLC with three AP's. Two SSID’s were configured, one with WPA2/AES-TIKIP and the other with Web Auth.
After installation, customers could connect to WLAN without problem and .
The problem that is occurring is that since the beginning of week, customers PDA's, cell phones and iPad and cannot access Internet with any of the two WLAN but clients who used laptop have no connection problems. Also the DHCP Server is assigning IP's correctly.
This problem also occurs with test SSID I created which is Open Auth. I see associated Cell phones and IPAD to the WLC but none of these answers ping from the WLC.
This is a WLC 2504 with IOS 7.4.100.Hello everyone!
Today I did a test with my Cell phone Samsung Note 2 and I have the same conectivity problem.
I have installed the APK ipconfig from the Play Store for Android in my cell phone and y see that I getting IP Address, Mask and Gateway.
This is what I´ve got from the APK:
IP ADDRESS 192.168.8.181
MASK: 255.255.255.0
GATEWAY: 192.168.8.2
DHCP SERVER: 192.168.8.16
DNS1: 192.168.6.16
DNS2: 192.168.2.16
I have connected my laptop to the WLAN with no issue and I´m getting this:
The IP address of the DHCP Server is 192.168.8.16 and 192.168.6.16 and is a Microsoft Server.
I´ve created a test WLAN with OPEN AUTH but the problem remains.

Disassoc flood - false alarms - IDS signature file needs adjustment
Another interesting observation regarding Disassociation flood wireless IDS alarms:
When a wireless client goes out of range of an AP, is that it is not uncommon for a burst of 64 disassociation frames to be sent in order to ensure that the client/AP are no longer associated.
However, the threshold in the WLC's IDS signature file is 50. It is unclear why this value was chosen by the developers. However, at Cisco's recommendation, we have adjusted the signature file to a value of FREQ=80 (instead of 50) for the following alarms:
Disassociation, Deauth Flood, and Bcast Deauth
This has resulted in fewer false alarms (except for Bcast deaut which is the result of the WLC alarming on its own containment messages - see previous thread!).
Additional Note: When making changes to the IDS signature file, it would appear that a REBOOT ended up being necessary in our case in order to get the WLCs to recognize the changes to the IDS signature file. When we merely upgraded the signature file, it did not make a difference.
Also, it would appear that the name of the signature file is important (since the parsing of the file does not take place unless a specific file name is given).
- JohnHi,
I'm getting a lot of false positive rogue APs (I've checked the MAC addresses and they are definitely ours), is it possible that a similar problem with signatures is causing this?

Problem description:
My computer is running very slow ever since I switched to Yosemite. I get the multicolored wheel just opening my browser at times and waiting for a page to open, or an application. Any ideas other than rebooting my computer to get the problem to alleviate for a few days?

Implicit vs explicit close of resultsets and statements?
Hi friends.I am a newbie Java Developer..Okay Here goes
I have just made a LAN based Java application using Swing,JDBC with backend as MS-Access..The backend is on a shared network drive..
The application is distributed as jar files on the LAN PCs..
Everywhere I have connected to the database I have just closed the connection explicitly like this
con.close();
I do not close the associated resultset and statement explicitly
The specification says associated statements and resultsets close when you close
the connection,even if you don't explicitly close them
Also I am not using connection pool..its simple basic connection using DriverManager
Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver");
String url = "jdbcdbcSN name";
String user = "";
String pw = "";
con = DriverManager.getConnection(url, user, pw);
Statement stmt = con.createStatement();
String select = "" ;
ResultSet rows = stmt.executeQuery(select);
On the net everyone says to explicitly close everything..but I did not know that
earlier..
If specification says everything closes on
closing connection why do ppl insist on closing everything explicitly..?
Or is this driver dependent..don't the drivers go through the specification..
My driver is the Sun JDBC ODBC bridge.....
I found this method DriverManager.setLogwriter()
It prints out a trace of all JDBC operations..
So I ran a sample program with this method included...
I redirected output to a log file..
In that program I just explicitly close the connection without closing the
statements and resultsets explicitly...
After running the program and seeing the log I saw that the statements
and resultsets are closed implicitly If I just close the connection explicitly..
I am putting the log file and the code..
Have a look at the end of the log file..
Code
import java.sql.;
import java.io.;
class gc4test
public static void main(String args[])
Connection con = null;
try
FileWriter fwTrace = new FileWriter("c:\\log.txt");
PrintWriter pwTrace= new PrintWriter(fwTrace);
DriverManager.setLogWriter(pwTrace);
Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver");
String url = "jdbc:odbc:pravahcon";
String user = "admin";
String pw = "ash123";
con = DriverManager.getConnection(url, user, pw);
Statement stmt = con.createStatement();
Statement stmt1 = con.createStatement(ResultSet.TYPE_SCROLL_SENSITIVE,ResultSet.CONCUR_UPDATABLE);
Statement stmt2 = con.createStatement();
Statement stmt3 = con.createStatement();
Statement stmt4 = con.createStatement();
Statement stmt5 = con.createStatement();
Statement stmt6 = con.createStatement();
Statement stmt7 = con.createStatement();
String select = "SELECT * FROM Users" ;
ResultSet rows = stmt.executeQuery(select);
ResultSet rows1 = stmt1.executeQuery(select);
while(rows.next())
con.close();
catch (ClassNotFoundException f)
System.out.println(f.getMessage());
System.exit(0);
catch (SQLException g)
System.out.println(g.getMessage());
