Associating an xmp from a jpg to a raw file

I am looking at converting a raw file (NEF or CRW) to a jpg to shrink the filesize. I then want to change attributes such as exposure and temperature in the jpg, saving the settings in the xmp and then associating the xmp file with the original raw file.
I seem to be able to rank the image, but if I change the exposure or temperature, it doesn't render in the raw image in the same way as the jpg.
Does anyone know if this is possible? I suspect that maybe it has to do with the different way colour are rendered between jpgs and raw files.

RawPlusJpeg might help.
Another option, if you don't want to use a plugin, is to do them one at a time using Lightroom's sync function.

Can photoshop convert .jpg to camera raw file?

And even if you could, it wouldn't be worth it.  Raw files are 12-bit (or more) with much higher dymanic range than jpegs.  The result is that (in the original raw file) you have flexibility to change white balance, change tone curve, recover detail from highlights and shadows in ways you can't with 8-bit (usually lossy-compressed) data in jpegs.  But having thrown that extra information away to create a jpeg, you can't get it back.  It would technically be possible to convert that jpeg data into raw format, but you would gain nothing by doing so and end up with a file much larger than the jpeg.  In fact if this theoretical conversion went the whole way to re-create a Bayer sensor array of data, you'd be throwing away resolution.

  • How can I transfer tags from a JPG to a RAW?

I have another person tagging my photos but transferring my RAW files is time consuming. If I export the RAWs as JPGs, then have them tag the JPGs, can I then get those tags transferred to the RAW from which they came?

  • Import from Panasonic DMC-LX3, only RAW files being imported not JPGs

    Hi,
is there a workaround for the following Aperture import transfer behaviour:
I have set my Panasonic DMC-LX3 to produce Raw (for CS4) and Jpg images with every shot.
However, when I import the SD card, Aperture only imports the .RW2 files (which are of course not supported as the DMC-LX3 is not compatible).
When I separate the RW2 files from the JPGs with two different folders on the SD card, then Aperture is able to transfer the JPGs.
    Any workaround?
    Thanks
    Christoph

The JPEGs are there; they're just not used by default. To use them, use the "New version from master JPEG" menu item.

  • Can I filter out jpgs so only RAW files show?

I have my photos organized in folders like this:
    Photos
    --2007
    ----Family
    ------02-19_Picnic
    --------JPGs
    ------02-20_Stuff
    --------JPGs
    etc.
When I import everything into Lightroom and I just want to see the images from the 02-19_Picnic folder, it's showing me both the raw files and jpegs. Is there any way to only see what's in that main folder and not its root?

You can do it two ways: (BTW, I think you meant to say "main folder and not its subfolder")
    1) Click on 02-19_Picnic, this displays all files in that folder and subfolders. Next Cmd-click (I think that's Ctrl-click on Wintel) within the Metabrowser panel, on Raw [under File Type] - if your raws are DNG, then choose DNG. That performs an intersection and thus shows only the Raws. If you again Cmd-click on Raw and then on Jpeg, you get just the jpegs.
    2) Click on 02-19_Picnic, this displays all files in that and subfolders. Next, in Find, check "Any Text", and enter "dng", "cr2" or whatever your raw's extension name is. That again displays files in the picnic folder and subfolders that include the raw name somewhere in the metadata (including the file name).

  • How to delete raw files while keeping original jpgs/later versions?

I'm using Aperture currently, which apparently can't do this -- if Lightroom can, I'm switching.
What I'd like to do is shoot everything in raw + jpg (using Nikon D200), and then keep the raw files only for the important shots.
I really like having the option of raw processing, but the storage demands are obviously very big. If I could just make a selection of multiple photos, and have a command to delete all the raw files from the selected photos, while keeping the original jpgs, that would be great.
Also, it would be great to be able to manipulate a raw file, and then when I'm satisfied with the image, to generate a full-size jpg & ditch the raw file. The jpg then becomes the master for that image.
Basically, I want the raw file safety net for everyday images, without gobbling up gigabytes of disk space every time...
    Can Lightroom do this?

I am unable to hide RAW files in Bridge.
And I can't delete or rename them in Windows Explorer.
    I'm using XP SP3.
Rejected RAW files appear in Bridge as unlabeled files. They are not hidden. "Show Hidden Files" is not checked; "Show Reject Files" is NOT checked. I've got the Label settings on. I created a subfolder and moved a batch of rejected RAWs there. They still show up, but at least they're labeled "Rejected."
Delete: I have a big sort to do, and I'd even be willing to delete these RAW files to avoid seeing them in Bridge.
I tried deleting them in Bridge using several methods, but I get an error message that tells me I don't have the "sufficient permissions." This happens even when I try to delete just one file.
I also tried deleting them in Windows Explorer. There, I got an error message that theyare in use by another program. I cannot re-name them in Explorer either. I got the same error message even when I shut down my computer and opened ONLY Windows Explorer. In Properties > File Attributes, neither Hidden or Read-Only are checked.
This is a big and important project, and I'm TOTALLY STUMPED!

  • Treat JPEG files next to RAW files as separate photos? or How do you not download JPG's

    Environment:
    LR 1.1
PC: Windows XP SP2, Dual Core 6600, 4GB RAM
Camera: Konica-Minolta 7D shooting RAW and JPG (CF card has 3 files for each frame, RAW, JPE, THM)
Although I Imported my RAW files with no problem, I discovered that the Import also copied the CF card's JPGs to the same folder as my RAW files on the hard drive. So I set out to figure out how to import RAW into LR without also downloading JPGs to my hard drive. I have not succeeded at that and have added a, Delete of the JPGs from my HD before synching Metadata step, to my workflow, but I DID find some truly weird behavior.
The File menu dropdown offers two ways to Import from the card.
    1) Import Photos from device which goes directly to the Import dialog where I have preview ON.
    2) Import photos from disk . . .which goes to a file display of the CF card for file selections before going to the Import dialog. (Required if you want JPG only)
Also, if I click on the Import button to the left of the tool bar I am given a dialog box to choose:
    1) M\(Camera or Card Reader) or
    2) Choose Files..
These correspond to the same options that the File menu offers.
    My results:
If you want to Import only RAW files use the Device option.
If you want to Import only JPG where you have RAW on your CF card use the Disk option and only select JPGs(with or without the preference switch set).
If you want to Import both RAW and JPG use the Disk option with the Preference option ON and select both JPG and RAW files.
But, I assumed (my error) that I could, using the Disk option, mix and match JPG and RAW selections.
    THEN the strange stuff . . .
If in the disk option with the preference switch set ON, I selected just RAW or both RAW & JPG files on the CF card in the file selection dialog, the Import dialog always showed BOTH RAW and JPG files in the preview. If then, in the Import dialog for any specific file, I selected a RAW or JPG but not both, selecting RAW Imported a JPG file and selecting JPG Imported a RAW file. No kidding.
I ran this test three times. I dont consider this a big problem because there is a way to get RAW only, JPG only and both when needed, but someone could look at the code before the next release. (Maybe the shell game goes away in Pirate mode.)
My biggest disappointment is I could not find a way to Import RAW without copying a second file to the same folder on my hard drive which I will need to delete later. Maybe, next release. (Please)
For the development team, I offer my thanks for your significant advancement of digital photography.
For those that get to the bottom of this post, remember Rule 5.

    >Speaking of which, WHY would anyone want to import jpgs alongside raws in Lightroom? I can't see any reason, and they just take up disk space. Am I missing something?
I'm not as gifted at file editing as many of you are, and often the jpgs I get from Canon or Nikon are much nicer than the raws. Sometimes I am sufficiently pleased with the jpgs that I just toss the raws. Sometimes I want to play, and the jpgs give me a target to shoot for and try to surpass.
Only when I really blew the exposure, not too common anymore, do I really need the raws to save what should have been a really great shot.
I understand the arguement for raw files. I just haven't found that they are automatically better than the jpegs without a lot of tinkering.

  • Connecting JPGs to RAW files

Recently I added CR2 and JPG files to a catalogue, but I sorted and renamed some of the JPGs so now I have CR2 files and JPGs that are no longer connected to each other. Normally I import both CR2 and JPGs at the same time, sort, then rename.
Needless to say I now have 2 copies of the same picture.
I've attached a JPG that shows the same image, but with differnet names for CR2 and JPG.
Is there a way of reconnecting a JPG to a RAW file?
    Thanks.

John, I agree with you on the separation. I do however like to keep them for back up to CD. so the workflow is import all JPG & RAW, then sort, then back up just the JPGs to DVDs. (too many DVDs for RAW files), then the RAWs and LR file gets backed up to external HDD. So in the end I have the files on 2 media and locations for safe keep.
I guess the main thing now is to remove all unwanted images (JPGs) and I was trying to save myself the process of going through 2,000 odd images.

  • Location of xmp data for jpg photo

    Scenario:
Edit a jpg photo in LR (let's call it photoname.jpg) - add cropping etc. Tell lightroom to "write metadata to file" (CTRL-S in XP).
I cannot see the associated .xmp file in windows explorer..... however, going over to Bridge and "edit in ACR" - the crop settings done in LR are used - meaning that the .xmp is SOMEWHERE.
I've checked, and my show hidden files is checked in windows explorer. I've done a global search on my harddrive for "photoname.xmp" and even "photoname.*". Nothing other than the original shows.
    Question:
Where exactly is this .xmp sidecar file being stored for this jpg photo when I tell LR to "write metadata to file"?
    Thanks.

    Sidecar ".xmp" files
Stores the settings in an XMP file in the same folder as the raw file with the same base name and an XMP extension. This option is useful for long-term archiving of raw files with their associated settings, and for the exchange of raw files with associated settings in multi-user workflows. These same sidecar XMP files can be used to store IPTC (International Press Telecommunications Council) data or other metadata associated with a camera raw image file. If you are opening camera raw files from a read-only volume like a CD or DVD, be sure to copy the files to your hard drive before opening them. The Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in cannot write an XMP file to a read-only volume and will default to writing the settings to the Camera Raw database file.
These XMP files can be viewed in the File Browser by choosing View > Unreadable Files.

  • Cannot open some jpgs in Camera Raw from Bridge

A couple of days ago, I rated select images from a set as 5 stars, and now I cannot open these in Camera Raw from Bridge. I get no error messages or anything, there is just simply no option to Open in Camera Raw from the File menu, or the right-click menu. The images I did not rate still open in Camera Raw, and not all of the starred ones have this problem - just 20 or so consecutive images. This makes no sense to me, as all the images as far as I can tell should operate the same way. They are all jpgs. I can find workarounds to this like working in Photoshop (all the images still open in Photoshop) or possibly just reloading the photos from the memory card, but I'd like to know why this would even be a problem to avoid it in the future. I'm using CC on Win 8.

I should add that JPGs edited with ACR usually need to be writable for ACR to be able to store the adjustment-settings inside themselves.  RAW files typically use an XMP sidecar to store settings, but JPGs typically don't.
If the files weren't read/write then ACR would have no way to store the adjustments in them and so is smart enough to not make them available for editing.
The other hint is that if you copy the files to your desktop--where the permissions are likely to be more friendly, they work.
To check the permissions, right-click on one of the files in Explorer, select Properties from the context menu and look at the Security tab.  Look at the various user-groups, like Users, Authenticated Users, Administrators, etc, and see what access each has to one oft he problem files, and then to one of the files that works ok.
You might also check the Effective Rights of a particular user to a particular file by clicking on the Advanced button in the Security tab.  Here is an example where I show only Read + Read & Execute access to an NEF for general users, but when I check my own logged in User (steve) I have Full Control which includes all the other access privileges, and this is either because I'm in the Administrators group or I am the owner, I'm not sure.  It is possible that Bridge or Photoshop is running in a user context other than your logged in user, or it's possible that another user accessed the files and changed the permissions to them.

  • JPG's from Lightroom vs Bridge... file size difference.

I'm a Photographer. I only shoot in RAW. I use CS2 and Bridge to process my RAW files and then export the finals to JPG.
I heard the buzz about Lightroom and downloaded the trial to give it a whirl. I have since upgraded my trial version to full version (via serial number) and then took a set of RAW files that were already tweaked (via Bridge/ACR), copied them to another folder (with the xmp side car files), brought them into Lightroom and exported them to JPG. The JPG's created by Lightroom were MUCH smaller. I was very surpised by this.
I shoot with a Canon 20D and the JPGs generated from Bridge ending up being between 4 to 6mg per image. For the same set of RAW images, the JPGs generated from Lightromm avereaged between 1.5 and 3.5 mg. Both Lightroom and Bridge were set to export the JPGs at the highest quality.
Can anyone tell me why this would be? Has anybody else found this to be the case? I can't help but think that some data is being discarded from Lightroom.

Did you choose export metadata to file first? The edits made to RAW images are contained within the database as well as xmp files if you choose this option. The edits for all other formats are embedded within the file (as well as the database) but of course you have to choose the export metadata option first. Your files may be smaller because they don't contain this data.
The image quality settings are not like for like across the Adobe range so cannot be compared.

  • Removing JPGs from "NEF+JPG"?

Several months ago, I was shooting RAW+JPG and imported a fair number of photos into LR (now 1.4.1). I had the setting enabled that treated tham as "one" (and was impressed by the results). I have since decided I don't want the JPGs and wish to just keep the NEF's. What's the best way to remove the JPGs from LR's database? Since they're treated as one, I can't figure out a way to delete just the JOG and separating them has, so far, proved not to be an intuitive process.

Go back to My Pictures/ My Documents etc.., and delete all the jpg associated files. They have not been 'imported' in to LR because they are treated as 'same' as raw files; but they are in base folders nevertheless.
As an aside; it is quite interesting to change a digit in the name of a jpg file, and then import into LR. This will give you an opportunity to compare (in the Library module)the difference between how LR (ARC) translates your NEF/CRF file and the original jpg as it is produced from the camera. Assuming always you are shooting with either an Canon or Nikon.

iPad apps are designed specifically for the iPad and will not run on the iPhone or iPod Touch. iPhone/iPod apps will run on the iPad, but will only take up an iPhone sized portion of the iPad screen (though you get a 2x button which effectively doubles each pixel in both directions so may appear pixelated). There are also 'universal' apps (which have a '+' symbol against them in the store) which have processing in them to recognise the device that they are on and will tailor the display accordingly (so will make use of the iPad's larger screen).

  • Loss of relationship between xmp and associated raw file.

    This is wierd. Please HELP!
I have a folder in my LR Library where the relationship between the xmp files have lost the relationship to ALL the raw files that it "represents" in that single folder. All I see in my grid view are the thumbnails with the exclamation symbol. When i select a thumbnail, LR indicates that the filename of the selected thumbnail is dsc0xxx.XMP instead of dsc0xxx.NEF. The warning box that comes up reads "Lightroom has encountered problems reading this photo". I checked the directory where xmp lives by right-clicking "Show in Explorer". I see the xmp file highlighted and i also see the RAW file just above it as well as all the other raw files.
How do i get my raw files to be once again read by lightroom? Why is lightoom only reading the xmp file? This folder has 288 images that are sorted into collections as well. Re-importing is out of the question. I don't want to go through and sort through everything again.
I tried sychronizing the folder, but that didn't do anything.
I'm using LR version 1.3.1. I then upgraded to 1.4.1 and the problem still persists. Platform is Windows XP SP2
    Please Help!

    John,
I tried searching for the NEF file and LR doesn't return anything. When i switch the query to .xmp it sees the 'image'. It's not really the image, just the thumbnail of the image that points to an xmp file.
I also moved out all the xmp files out of that folder, did a restart and it still couldn't point back to the raw file. The thumbnail still points to the xmp file. I do however get the question mark icon. clicking on it brings up a browse for a file location dialog box. But the 287 other thumbs in grid view still point to the xmp files. ...Drat.
"Original Nef" files? You mean the ones that were on my CF card? Uh, no. These photos were taken 2 months ago. i've gone through several read write cycles on my CF cards. I still have my NEF files. It's just that LR has decided to only point to my xmp files. This is really messed up.
    Don,
Where did you read about this "bug" for LR 1.3? This is the first i've heard of a bug, besides in 1.4.
I read the "missing file" threads. i've done everything suggested there..and no succcess. I've done a variety of querys and nothing is close that what i'm seeing on my machine. My files aren't missing. They are on my disk. i'm looking right at them and i can manually redirect the thumb to point to the nef file...but i need to do that for each and every thumb....I'm not doing that.
[Begin rant]: You'd think that if you paid for software you'd get tech support included as well... apparently NOT. It's $40 per 'incident': http://www.adobe.com/support/programs/photoshoplightroom/index.html?tab:contact=1
Ouch. Why am I paying money for this? for the priveledge? Adobe, please consider including phone-in tech support for matter's like this. Knowledge bases and forums can only get you so far before you need to get it from the 'horses mouth'. [end of rant]
