Associating Application Icons with Files

I just moved about a Gigs worth of files over from my G4 to my Wallstreet. The .pdf files do not obtain the Adobe Acrobat Reader icon until I actually open the file. Is there a way to change all the files icons at once without opening them all?

Hi, Kirk -
OS 9 uses embedded File Type and Creator codes in order for Finder to know how to handle a file when it is double-clicked, and to know what icon to use for it. OSX does not use those codes; it may be that they are not being added to the file until the file has been opened by the program.
There are some utilities available which can be used to change those codes, and may be able to fix those files. The one I'd recommend is FileBuddy.
With FileBuddy you can create a droplet, a small mini-app designed to change file characteristics in a specified way - you can then drop a folder full of files onto the droplet, and all files in the folder will be changed to match the settings in the droplet.
To use FileBuddy for that, you will first need to acquire the correct File Type and Creator codes. Drop a 'good' file, one with the correct icon, onto FileBuddy's icon. FB's Get Info window will open. At the bottom center of that window will be a couple of data blocks containing the File Type and Creator codes for that file. Write those codes down - note that all File Type and Creator codes are exactly four characters in length, and may contain numbers and special characters (such as a space) in addition to letters; and that the characters are case sensitive (upper and lower case are important). Close that window.
Now drop one of the generic files of the same kind onto FileBuddy. In FB's Get Info window, change the File Type and Creator codes to match the ones you copied previously. Once you have done so, the droplet button should become active - it's the leftmost of the row of samll icons near the top of the Get Info window. Click it, name the droplet something appropriate, and complete the creation of the droplet.
Then test it with a copy of one of the generic files. If it works okay, you can then drop an entire folder of such files onto the droplet for mass fixing.
Be sure you do not have a stray other-kind of file in that folder, because all files in the folder will be changed to match the settings in the droplet.
For future importation of files, try adjusting the file/program linkages in the File Exchange control panel, particularly those in the PC Exchange section; and the similar settings in the Internet control panel (Advanced tab > File Mappings). I'm not sure which of those settings will be used by the OS when files are brought in by TCP/IP.

  • Desktop Application Distribution with Files in ZFS 6.5

I'm trying to do a Desktop Application Distribution with a simple NAL and
can not get the files associated with the NAL to copy to the subscriber
server. I am using ZFS 6.5 SP1. I am using a mapped drive letter in the NAL
and have chosen "Keep the same source paths for the replicated objects" in
the distribution. I also have defined a variable in the service location
package as 'drive letter'='volume name' and associated this policy with the
container that the distributor and subscriber are in. I checked the box in
the subscriber's variable property to use this policy. The documentation
also says to use a SOURCE_PATH macro and 'Package Source List' to define the
mapped drive but I am unsure how those should be defined. Should they be
just a drive letter or the entire path to the applications files? Also, I'm
not sure if anything else is need to make this work.
Any Ideas of what I might need to do to get this to work?
    Thanks!

    Graham,
Thanks for the suggestions. I thought this type of distribution still
worked in Zen 6.5. It used to work great for us under Zen 6 and I hadn't
seen anything that said it didn't work with Zen 6.5. We'll probably use a
second distribution for the short term and then try one of your other
suggestions or see if we can find another way that works better.

  • Blank application icon with Simple Finder

I have parental controls turned on for my kids so that they can only see the simple finder. However, one of the application I've approved for them to use, Photo Booth, shows up in their simple finder as a blank icon that I cannot click on. The others work fine. I've tried switching between simple finder and not, but no luck. This has happened before with many icons turning blank, and I had to resort to deleting their account and recreating it. I don't want to go through that exercise again. Any suggestions?

An "encrypted disk image" is something that can be created using tools included with OS X and might be satisfactory for encrypting arbitrary files. The procedure is described here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107333
Keep in mind that the priority with encryption is keeping your data "secure", but not necessarily maintaining the integrity of the data - since the entire contents of the disk image are effectively wrapped up into a single encrypted file, even minor corruption of that file could potentially result in the loss of all of the data so maintaining up to date backups is essential.
There are a few other things to be aware of, for example: When the disk image is mounted, it behaves just like a regular, non-encrypted volume so other users with access to the computer would be able to access its contents. The contents are only secure while the image is not mounted. For this reason, it might make sense to split up files into groups - things for which security isn't as important, or which need to be accessed frequently might benefit from being stored in a .dmg separate from the one containing the most sensitive, infrequently accessed files.
Don't share the contents of the encrypted disk image over the network. Obviously this doesn't make any sense from a security perspective, but aside from that, if a local user and a remote user both make changes to any part of the dmg while it is mounted, there is pretty much guaranteed to be corruption, and a greatly increased risk of data loss.
And unlike "Filevault", a stand alone disk image doesn't come with a "master password" backdoor so if the password is lost, its contents "will be irretrievably lost"...

  • Associate Icon with file

Hello Every one, I need some help here. I have just developed an Editor, and I want to know how to associate the files created with the editor with my icon. And secondly, when the file is double click on the desktop or anywhere in the computer, the file should open up with my editor.
    I really need your help.
    Thanks
    Phife

normally you can say in windows if you right click
the file, you should be able to select the default
program to open that file and that he always opens
it with your editor, if so the default icon of your
    program will be shown.
how you do that default by windows i don't know maybe
it is somde regKey somewhere into the system.
    check that out

  • Htmldb page with 'File Browse' hang on submit change

I have a htmldb page with 'File Browse' item. With File Browse empty, on pressing submit button with which has 'SQL UPDATE' action and returning to same page branch, the page hangs.
It also happen on File Import page of htmldb application itself with File Browse.
Anyone have the same problem or know why?

I'm working with Sashisu on our problem and I wanted to give a few more details on what we've found.
    -We're using HTMLDB 1.6
-The problem occurs only on pages with a file upload page item.
-When clicking a link on one of the problem pages the browser will stick on retrieving the page for 1-2 minutes, then ultimately it will end in a page cannot be displayed error.
-Sometimes the page will not hang and go directly to the page cannot be displayed error.
-After encountering the error, clicking back to return to the page and then retrying the link will successfully load (and upload the file) the next page.
-The problem only happens in IE 6.0. The submits work fine in FireFox.
-Our development servers do not have this problem using the same HTMLDB code. The configuration between the servers on Development and Production is similar but not exact (we're working on finding the delta).
-We did not have this problem on production until a recent code update.
    Thanks in advance,
    -John

  • Unable to replace the default icon with the application icon for SIS files on packaging

    Hi,
I got hold of the earlier (now removed from Adobe) available Adobe Mobile Packager (the free version). Now the problem is that I see the default packager icon on my phone for my Flash Lite application. Also, the packager does not allow me to select my application icon. I have placed the desired icon in the output folder along with its svg; doesn't help either.

You mentioned that you implemented loopback merge mode.  It's possible some of the settings being included in the merge are interfering with your new file associations.  Have you checked to see if there are any conflicting file
associations in other GPOs that may be applying?  If so, you may want to experiment with loopback
    replace mode.
Also check to see if any file associations are being set in the computer configuration settings, since you are attempting to set associations in the user configuration.  In a merge scenario the computer policy is processed after the user policy, and
has precedence if any of the settings conflict.

  • My iphoto library folder with files of my pictures is missing from the pictures folder, only the application icon remains.  I have read through similar discussions but have not managed to fix the problem with the recommended solutions.  Can anyone help?

I have a Macbook Pro with iphoto '08 running on Mac OS X version 10.5.8.  I used to be able to go to my pictures folder on my HD and access my pictures via that iphoto library folder.  There used to be a small arrow next to the iphoto icon with all the albums then listed within the folder (to the right).  That arrow is now gone and all I have is the iphoto application icon which just reopens iphoto when I click on it, but I want to be able to access the data files.  Somehow I do have files btwn 2008 and 2009 but it hasn't created these since then...Could someone please help me to restore this ability?  I have read other similar posts but they seem to be related to lost data all together and I do luckily have all my pictures in iphoto still. I just can't access them in the pictures folder which means I can't access them on my external hard drive.  I am now out of start up disc space somehow so I figured I had to delete some albums (I have 12,090 pictures) and do have them backed up but want to make sure I can go back for them when I need them.  I did export all the pictures to a folder on the hard drive but it is all 12,090 in one long list with only numbers as names and not in any order, this will be a nightmare to access later!  Please help!  Thank you!

You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto.
That indicates that that is your library.  Put it in your Pictures folder if it already isn't there and make sure it's named "iPhoto Library".  It should look like this:
    Now launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and select that library to open.  If you get that same message close iPhoto and try the following;
Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Getting path to application associated with file type

    Hello,
I'm looking for a platform-independent way to get path to application associated with given file type. Desktop API introduced in JSE 1.6 seems to do this, but it only lanuches the app.
    Any suggestions will be apprecieted

Okay then, how can I open the file in it's associated
application AND get the Process object of app's
instance? If it doesn't bother you that the app will only work on windoze, then you can use the shell "start" command on the file.
Process proc = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(new String[]{"cmd", "/C","start",filePath});However waitFor() will only wait for the process to be launched, not completed. Since your program doesn't know what Windoze will choose to launch, this makes sense.

  • Opening a file with an associated application

Ok, I have a project where I have to open a file or files
with the associated application on a local system. I have tried the
"open" command in lingo, the "ApplicationXtra.x32" xtra, "BuddyAPI"
xtra and the "FileXtra4" xtra. Each will open the application but
    none will open the file path and name sent in the argument;
assuming any of the folders in the path or the filename itself has
    spaces in it.
Here is an example of the code used for the lingo "open"
    command:
    open "E:\Working\PlotViews for Cleveland.dwg" with
    "E:\Program Files\ACAD2000\acad.exe"
Here is an example of the code used for the
    "ApplicationXtra.x32":

Here is an example of the code used for the "BuddyAPI":
    ok = baShell( "open", "E:\Program Files\ACAD2000\acad.exe",
    "E:\Working\PlotViews for Cleveland.dwg" , "E:\Working\", "normal"
And here is an example of the code used for the "FileXtra4":
    FX = new xtra("FileXtra4")
    FX.fx_FileRunApp("E:\Program Files\ACAD2000\acad.exe
    E:\Working\PlotViews for Cleveland.dwg")
All of these crap out when there is a space anywhere in the
path or filename. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks for the help.

Well, to anyone who cares....I used the ShortFileName
function from BuddyAPI and BAM it works!

  • Removing obsolete file type associations from "Open With" menu

Ever since I removed VMWare Fusion 3.x from my system, I've been unable to remove the Bootcamp file type associations that it created. For example, if I right-click on a PDF and choose Open With, this is a partial list of what I see:
    Adobe Acrobat Pro (default)
Adobe Distiller (Mac) - Boot Camp partition (VMWare Fusion 3.0.0)
    Adobe Fireworks CS4
Adobe Fireworks CS4 (Mac) - Boot Camp partition (VMWare Fusion 3.0.0)
    Adobe Illustrator CS4
Adobe Illustrator (Mac) - Boot Camp partition (VMWare Fusion 3.0.0)
    Adobe Photoshop CS4
Adobe Photoshop CS4 (Mac) - Boot Camp partition (VMWare Fusion 3.0.0)
...and on and on and on. 17 additional entries for Fusion for PDS's alone. This junk is driving me crazy.
I've tried rebuilding the Launch Services database with MacPilot and Onyx (the recommended fix that I've found on the web), but the entries still are there even after restarting Finder and rebooting my iMac. I'm at a loss to figure out how to get rid of these.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks!

They are stored in the LaunchServices database. You can give this a try, but no guarantees. If you no longer use VM Fusion then I suggest following the information below on uninstalling software.
    Rebuild LaunchServices Database
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt paste in the following command in its entirety:
    find /System/Library/Frameworks -type f -name "lsregister" -exec {} -kill -seed -r \;
    Press RETURN.
Wait for the Terminal prompt to return after which you can quit the Terminal.
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS. Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead. Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:
    AppZapper
    Automaton
    Hazel
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • The "open with" dialog doesn't drop down associated applications

Although I have correctly associated applications to handle specific file types in FF4.0 I am always asked to choose an application in the open/save dialog. Is there any way I can set some sort of drop-down list showing the associated applications for me to choose one? Thanks!

I have found further issues with the open directory dialog in FM 9 and FM 10, so I thought I would share them in case any developers run into them.
If the F_ApiChooseFile directory argument is specified as a non-empty string and that path is not valid (i.e. the string cannot be evaluated to an existing directory) the open directory dialog will not be displayed and the function will return immediately without reporting an error in FA_errno. I think most developers who have tried to use the dialog have discovered this behaviour. If you are going to supply the directory argument you should check the path exists before calling F_ApiChooseFile.
Also, if the F_ApiChooseFile directory argument is specified as an empty string, the function gets the FP_OpenDir property to use for the directory. If FP_OpenDir is not an existing directory (for example, the directory existed in the previous FrameMaker session and at the end of that session the value was saved in the maker.ini, but since then the user has deleted the directory) the open directory dialog will not be displayed and the function will return immediately without reporting an error in FA_errno.
This problem occurs with API clients built with FDK 9 and FDK10 in FM 9 and FM 10.
The workaround to this issue is to get FP_OpenDir and check it is a valid path. If it is not valid set it to a valid directory (such as the user's home directory, the FrameMaker current directory or the root of the drive) before calling F_ApiChooseFile.
It is a pity that the FP_UserHomeDir property of the FO_Session object is not valid in Windows. It would be ideal if this property returned the user's My Documents directory in Windows.

  • Ability to add multiple apps to Open With file associations

It would be extremely helpful if Bridge's "file association" dialog allowed one to associate multiple applications with a file type, so the Open With function worked like Lightroom's Edit In function which allows the use of multiple external editors.  As it is currently designed, only one new "default" association can be changed/added.   A current list of other available "editors" also appears in the Open With context menu, but it is unclear (at least to me) where that list comes from because there are some pretty strange entries in the list for any specific file type.
    Thanks

Agreed -- I've always been curious as to what random generator Bridge uses to assign programs with file types.

  • Create a custom dock/application icon for .jar files built in eclipse

I've spent the better part of the afternoon trying to figure out how to apply a custom icon to jar file that I created in eclipse. I am presently using eclipse v3.5 on Mac OS X 10.6.2 and have yet to find a way to change the java coffee cup logo in the document icon for my jar files created in eclipse. Is there some way I can call a specific Apple class in Eclipse to change the dock/application icon of my .jar file?
I found this link that uses a class that seems to be specific to XCode to change the icon of the .jar file.
What I mean by change the icon of the jar file, I mean change the icon used in the dock, and also the icon used when the "command+tab" switcher pops up. Presently, I have the black console icon with the text "exec" in the upperleft.
If anyone has any good links on this topic or even better knows the code I need insert into my program I would be highly greatful.

When I right click on an file and use "open with" command I get duplicate application icons in my finder window. Anyone know why? Solution?
    Thanks Ed

Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and paste the following command in its entirety immediately after the Terminal prompt:
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/L aunchServices.framework/Versions/Current/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain system -domain local -domain user
Now press RETURN. Your finished when the prompt returns.
Duplicates may still appear if you have different versions of the same program installed and if you have the software installed on multiple drives.
